Owner-reported complaints naming the tire or wheel system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Tires & wheels reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact’s daughter owns a 1998 Honda Civic equipped with Continental tires, Tire Line: General Altimax RT43, Tire Size: 185/65/R14, DOT Number: 6Y6LWBLJ1221. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver’s side front tire had a blowout. The contact stated that the tread and tire belt had detached, causing the vehicle to drive on the driver’s side front rim. The contact replaced the driver’s side front tire with the spare tire. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who inspected all four tires. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall for the tire. The failure mileage was approximately 123,679.

DRIVING ON I-84 DURING A RAINY MORNING RUSH HOUR, AT 70MPH, MY HONDA CIVIC'S FRONT LEFT TIRE EXPERIENCED AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF AIR. I PULLED OVER TO THE NEXT EXIT AND CHANGED THE TIRE. TOOK THE TIRE TO THE LOCAL TIRE SHOP FOR REPAIR, AND THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE VALVE STEM HAD FAILED. AT THAT SPEED, THE TIRES WERE RUINED, SO I HAD TO BUY A NEW TIRE. *TR

PROBLEMS WITH MICHELIN TIRE EQUIPMENT ON 1998 HONDA CIVIC. *MR DURING THE PAST NINE MONTHS, THE CONSUMER HAS EXPERIENCED 6 FLAT TIRES. TWO FLATS HAVE OCCURRED WHILE COMMUTING ON A DANGEROUS HIGHWAY. THE PROBLEM BEGAN WHEN THE CONSUMER PURCHASED A FULL SET OF MICHELIN TIRES. THE COMMON FACTOR OF THE FLATS, STEMMED FROM A CRACKED VALVE STEM, WITH THE CRACK ALWAYS LOCATED NEAR THE BASE OF THE STEM ON THE WHEEL AXLE SIDE. THE VALVE STEMS MAY BE TOO LONG FOR THE RIMS. *SC *JB

Crash reported1 injury reported
WITHIN FIFTEEN MINUTES OF HAVING NEW REAR TIRES PUT ON MY CAR, I EXPERIENCED A SIDEWALL BLOWOUT ON THE LEFT REAR TIRE WHILE GOING AROUND A LEFT HAND TURN AT ABOUT 40 MPH. THIS CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL AND SLAM HEAD FIRST INTO A CONCRETE PILLAR AT THE BASE OF A LIGHT POLE. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY TOTALED AND I SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. HAD I NOT BEEN WEARING A SEAT BELT I WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. IF I HAD ANYONE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT THEY WOULD HAVE PROBABLY LOST THEIR LEGS AS THE FLOOR WAS PUSHED UP TO THE SAME LEVEL AS THE SEAT. *JB
