2018 Honda Civic Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I was driving today and for no reason at all the cars anti collision system automatically braked hard and could have caused an accident if someone was driving behind me. There was no one, objects or vehicles around my car at the time that would cause it to happen.

March 5th 2020 I finally recorded a message that had been appearing in my dash board during late night drives. Message read as "Adaptive Cruise Control Problem" "Collision Mitigation System Problem" I notified Honda of North Hollywood service department at the time, and they said they could not do anything to fix the problem unless the message was actively displayed on the dash board during the time of service. Unfortunate for me the message would come and go and would not remain on for the service advisor to see. Several times my vehicle would randomly brake abruptly (to a screeching halt) due to a malfunction in detecting cars/objects around me. Luckily I managed to not crash or have other vehicles crash into my car from behind, but it scared me. I've always wondered what the issue was, and was never able to get it resolved because I didn't have proof of the abrupt stops. Fast forward to May 2024 I received a letter in the mail for a recall on the fuel pump module. I think this might have something to also do with not being able to start my car three times within one year... I ended up replacing multiple batteries and cleansing the fuel tank thinking that was the issue and I have been mobile since then. I have contacted Curry Honda in Georgia multiple times to get the recall resolved. 8 months since I received the recall notice, and the issue is still unresolved. Please help. I rely on this vehicle to get to work, and I am still paying on this car. I am concerned of the safety issue.

Two components failed safety inspection: 1. replace steering wheel assembly. Steering gear is faulty. 2. Alignment- 4 wheel alignment- required with steering gear replacement. Yes, available for inspection upon request. Diagnostics ran 12/9/2024. This is a repeat problem as this occurred in 1/2023, as well. Safety concern: I am a single mom and three instances while my child was in the vehicle the car has self corrected it’s steering towards other vehicles in traffic. Yes, problem has been reproduced. Both codes received from service center 12/2/2024 and diagnostics ran by dealer 12/9/2024 (first available appointment.) Honda dealership has diagnosed (can provide documentation) and Honda Corp has been made aware of this 12/3/2024 initial contact to NHTSA & Honda Corp with suspected issue and called both 12/9/2024 with confirmation upon receipt of diagnostics. This occurred in January 2023 and the entire steering system was replaced. Upon replacement the issue has not acted up again until around 11/29/24. The replacement did not make a full two years before reoccurring failure.

When driving, if the sunlight is just right casting shadows in front of the car from trees, or while traveling down a divided highway passing 18 wheelers (mainly in the evening), the shadow created causes a false alarm on the collision avoidance system causing it to react by hard deceleration. This is also accompanied by the audible BRAKE alert coming across the gauge cluster. While at highway speeds, it can really startle you and possibly cause you to be rear ended due to the sudden and Unneed braking. You have to get hard on the accelerator in order to overcome the computer trying to slow you down. There is a recall on OTHER Honda vehicles for this exact thing, and it needs to be expanded to the Civic as it suffers from the same problem. The approximate date section only contains 1 date, but yet it has happened numerous times.

I filled complaint few days ago and want to update findings. I brought car to Honda dealership due to sticking steering wheel. They right away were aware of the problem and asked the service manager to come speak to me. He said he would take the car for a quick drive around parking lot to verify problem. Upon return he said the steering rack was definitely the problem and had to be replaced. I asked how he was so sure of this, was this a common problem? He said yes, it’s a growing issue and had already replaced 5-6 in the last month on the year Civics and CRVs. They worked up a quote for replacing the rack. $6,971.60! The car only has 57,291 miles on it, it is out of warranty by 13 months. He said if had only been 6 months out of warranty he could have covered it. He said it was out of his hands. Cost of this repair is 30% of the cars value! I asked if the car was safe to drive as this is my daughter’s car. He said in his opinion it was, and he didn’t think it would get worse. My daughter said problem gets worse after about 40 minutes of driving, so I just took it on a long drive. Not only does it get worse but it’s almost uncontrollable. I gave her my car to drive until we figure out what to do. We certainly do not have the money to repair this as I’m sure 1,000’s of other owners who have the same problem. This is going to start causing accidents on our roadways. This is a very serious issue that Honda is very aware of.

My steering wheel sticks after driving and the engine has a change to get warm. Once I go over 25 mph and the sticking begins I have to constantly over compensate to stay in my lane. This issue has made it nearly impossible to stay in my lane on highways and speed above 55mph.

I got the car with Honda Sensing to include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning. All these systems stopped working within 36 month and under 36000 miles. Honda dealership wants more than $2500 for a fix that I read on the internet does not seems to solve the problem. Many people report that the problem is either not solved or it recurs within 6 months.

I was driving through an intersection when my car suddenly applied the brakes even though the vehicle in front was way ahead of me and in motion. Thankfully the driver behind me was not close enough to have collided with the rear of my vehicle. Prior to this happening as i was driving on the highway, the vehicle did mark the brake warning sign even though I was at a safe distance from the vehicle in front. This is the first time i have encountered this problem, howevever i am very scared that this could cause an accident in the future if it were to happen again.

The automatic break warning came on with no one in front of me and the car came to a halting stop. Thankfully the car behind me was paying attention otherwise i would have been rear ended. I think this happened one other time, but I recall someone in front of me. The incident today 3-24-2022 was very distinctive.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the power steering had failed and the vehicle was difficult to steer. The tire pressure monitoring, brake system, electronic power steering, and stability assist warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to drive to her residence. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to turn off the vehicle and turn it back on to correct the failure. The power steering was corrected after restarting the vehicle; however, the warning lights were still illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with lost communication with the steering angle sensor. The dealer calibrated the steering angle sensor and cleared the DTC, then test drove the vehicle. The failure recurred a week later with an additional unknown warning light. The vehicle was towed a second time back to the dealer, who diagnosed that rodents were chewing the steering column wires. The dealer replaced the steering column wires and wrapped them in a tape produced by the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the steering column wires were soy-insulated, which could attract rodents. The failure mileage was 31,879.

On 05.02.2021, I was driving our CAR in Philadelphia, and stopped at red light. When I started driving in heavy stop and go traffic knowing I had to stop in 200 ft. brakes failed, brake pedal went to the floor and the car accelerated, emergency brakes didn’t start and Forward collision warning didn’t work. I hit the car in front of me. My car was totaled, more cars were damaged. Two months before this accident I was driving on a crowded Philadelphia city street and when I put on the brakes exactly the same thing happened - brakes failed, car accelerated, emergency braking didn’t function, Forward collision warning didn’t work. I drove the car to the edge of sidewalk to stop it. Nobody got hurt but the front of the car was damaged. I took it to Honda to investigate the brake failure. First the dealer said they checked and there was nothing wrong we can take to car. Later Honda America told the dealer, the car is not safe and we can’t get it back until they send an expert to check. After the expert, service people at the dealership said the car was OK. The problem could be an unsecured floor mat that interfered with the brakes and that is why brakes failed. We asked why the emergence brakes didn’t work. They said “when you pushed the brake the computer has a message that brakes are pushed and emergency brakes don’t come on functioning”. We removed the moveable floor mat and asked for the expert report. They told me he didn’t write a report. Later when I confronted Honda America they said there was a written report but I did not have the right to see it. Honda America also refused any responsibility saying it was up to the insurance company and they were closing the report.I believe Honda America is not acting responsibly. HONDA should share the expert report after the first accident, should investigate what went wrong during the accident, should try to figure out why the brakes failed twice in the same way in a two months period but operated fine in between.

MY CAR MAKES LIKE A CLICKING NOISE INTERMITTENTLY WHILE ACCELERATING. WHEN IT'S MAKING THIS NOISE IT HAS STOPPED ACCELERATING. I HAVE TO RELEASE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS FOR A COUPLE SECONDS THEN WHEN I ACCELERATE, IT IS BACK TO NORMAL.THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY DAY ANYMORE BUT AT ONE POINT IT WAS HAPPENING PRETTY MUCH AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. I TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP IN OCTOBER 2020 ND NOVEMBER 2020 AND ASKED THEM TO FIND OUT WHAT'S WRONG. I TOLD THEM IT MAY BE THE FUEL PUMP/SYSTEM OR SOMETHING WITH THE ACCELERATOR, AND PRECEDED TO TELL THEM ABOUT THE NOISE. BOTH TIMES THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE NOISE AND THEREFORE COULD NOT FIX OR DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. IT HAPPENS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, ON A HILL, ACCELERATING QUICKLY, AND SOMETIMES JUST GOOD OLD FASHIONED REGULAR ACCELERATING. IT HAS MADE ME LOSE TRUST IN THE CAR LIKE I COULD BE TURNING OR PASSING SOMEONE AND IT HAPPENS WHEN EVERYONE OND IS CRITICAL. NEEDLESS TO SAY I HAVE BEEN ACCELERATING VERY SLOWLY TO TRY TO LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF TIMES IT HAPPENS BUT IT STILL HAPPENS. CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS.

SINCE SHORTLY AFTER I GOT MY CAR, BRAND NEW, IT STARTED TO STALL A LITTLE BIT AS I WENT TO TURN, IF I HAD TO STOP OR SLOW DOWN BEFOREHAND. IT GOT WORSE AS TIME WENT ON. I TOLD HONDA BEFORE MY FIRST YEAR WAS UP AND HE TOLD ME TO JUST TAKE OFF ECO. I DID, BUT EVENTUALLY IT STARTED DOING THAT WITHOUT ECO. I'M AFRAID IT'S GONNA DO THAT WHEN I HAVE TO TURN LEFT ONTO A BUSY ROAD AND NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY FAST ENOUGH. BOTH ECO AND NON ECO SHOULD WORK EFFICIENTLY. THE DATE BELOW IS AN ESTIMATE OF WHEN IT STARTED. IT'S BEEN A COUPLE YEARS.

ON MARCH 27, 2020, I WAS DRIVING TO WORK WHEN MY CAR'S ABS LIGHTS, BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHTS, STABILITY CONTROL LIGHTS, AND ANOTHER LIGHT I DID NOT RECOGNIZE ALL LIT UP AT THE SAME TIME. MY CAR BEGAN TO SWERVE AND SUDDENLY MY CAR'S STEERING WHEEL AND FRONT WHEELS LOCKED UP. I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AND WASN'T ABLE TO CORRECT ANYTHING BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL AND FRONT WHEELS WERE BOTH LOCKED. I HIT A FARM FENCE WITH THE LEFT SIDE OF MY CAR, AND SLID ACROSS THE ROAD INTO A DITCH. MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DESPITE THE SUDDEN IMPACT TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. THE CAR WHEELS WERE SO LOCKED UP THAT THE TOW TRUCK DRIVERS HAD DIFFICULTY LOADING THE CAR ON/OFF THE TOW TRUCK. THE EMERGENCY LIGHTS STAYED ON, EVEN WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON. A WEEK PRIOR TO THIS, MY CAR TURNED ITSELF OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING, BUT I WAS ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BY TURNING THE IGNITION KEY OFF AND THEN BACK ON. I'VE ATTACHED A PICTURE OF MY DASHBOARD AFTER THE ACCIDENT TO SHOW WHAT EMERGENCY LIGHTS WERE LIT UP. MY INSURANCE COMPANY IS IN THE PROCESS OF INVESTIGATING THIS CLAIM, BUT I WANTED TO REPORT THIS IN CASE THIS IS A RECALL THAT NEEDS TO BE SENT OUT.

MOST OF THE TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M GETTING ON THE FREEWAY, IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE A LITTLE CONTROL OVER THE STEERING AND IT FEELS LOOSE.
