2019 Honda Civic Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I was driving down the highway near where I live in Hanford California the highway is 198. I was going 68, 69 mph. No one was on the road my car literally slammed on its brakes and jerked to the right.this has happened 2times I have turned off the assist I’m to afraid it will happen again. I am bringing it into the dealership tomorrow and also have them check my airbags the light in the dashboard intermittently keeps coming on then after a bit it will turn off. The first time I brought it in for the airbag lights coming on they informed me that it was due to me pulling the seat back to far I am 5 foot four. I don’t normally pull the seat back. It would be more closer to the steering wheel for me, but there was a problem supposedly with the connection that is under the seat it doesn’t make me feel too safe to think that me moving. My seat is going to prevent my airbags from deploying God for bid if I get into an accident.

We were hit on the passenger side of our car. Another car ran a red light and slammed into that side of our car. The front passenger sustained damage to their head, neck, back, shoulder and knee from the impact. The air bags did not deploy in the front or back seats, on the passenger side or the drivers side. The front passenger’s knee was bruised and scraped from the door colliding with their leg. The air bags in the other car deployed.

I have been experiencing some rickety, creaking sound on my steering wheel coming from the SRS module for the past month. I've taken the car to the dealer 5 times and they did some work and on my last visit, they decide to replace the airbag module but still up to now the problem persists. I think this is a safety problem that needs to be dealt with before somebody gets hurt.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A ROAD (WITH MY FRIEND IN THE PASSENGER SEAT NEXT TO ME JUST TO NOTE) THAT IS BEING REPAVED AND IT'S NOT ANYTHING THAT I HAVEN'T DRIVEN ON BEFORE, JUST A LITTLE TINY BIT SHAKY HERE AND THERE BUT AGAIN NOTHING CRAZY. I'M GOING ABOUT 10-15 MPH AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN MY AIRBAGS JUST GO OFF. NOTHING HIT, NO POTHOLE IN SIGHT, JUST SLOWLY DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND BAM. I WAS SPOOKED AS I COULDN'T BRACE FOR IT AT ALL BECAUSE I WASN'T EXPECTING IT. MY WINDOWS WERE UP SO THE SOUND OF IT COMING OUT BASICALLY WRECKED MY EARS AND IT CAME OUT ALONG WITH A BUNCH OF SMOKE. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND GOT OUT TO LOOK, CONFUSED AS TO WHAT HAD TRIGGERED IT BUT NOTHING, NO DAMAGE TO THE CAR AT ALL, NOTHING HIT. AT HONDA THEY WERE NOT HAVING IT. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY CAN REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY IF IT WAS PROVED TO BE A DEFECT. I ARGUED THAT IT MUST BE CONSIDERING I DIDN'T HIT ANYTHING AND WAS DRIVING SLOW AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE ON THE CAR. SHE SAID THEY'LL LIFT IT AND IF THERE IS ANYTHING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR TO INDICATE THAT THE SENSOR WAS TOUCHED, IT'S INSTANTLY OUT OF WARRANTY AND I NEED TO GO THROUGH INSURANCE. HOW IS THIS OKAY? CLEARLY THIS IS SOME DEFECT WITH THE CAR AND I'M BEING PENALIZED FOR IT. THEY CALLED TODAY FOR THE RESULT AND SAID THE CAR HIT THE GROUND AND DAMAGED THE SENSOR SO IT'S ON ME TO PAY FOR DAMAGES. I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE BECAUSE I FELT NO IMPACT AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE CAR AFTER IT HAPPENED. I PUT IT IN PARK RIGHT AWAY TO COME OUT BUT ONCE I WAS TOLD BY THE POLICE TO GO TO HONDA I PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE AND SMOOTHLY DROVE OFF TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHAT CAN I DO TO HAVE HONDA ACCEPT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY? I NEVER THOUGHT THAT REGULAR DRIVING ON A SLIGHTLY BUMPY ROAD (BASICALLY FLAT AND PEBBLY) MEANS THAT THE AIRBAGS WOULD GO OFF. THERE WERE MANY CARS ON THAT ROAD YET THEIR AIRBAGS DIDN'T GO OFF. *TR
