2022 Honda Civic Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Ever since I purchased my brand new vehicle in 2021, I have had a recurring issue where the cruise control will randomly turn off, with no warnings or alerts showing on the dash, and will not allow the cruise to be set again until I have either turned off the vehicle or my speed has decreased down into the single digits. The vehicle has been seen multiple times by the local Honda dealership with no success on getting this issue to stop. The dealership has been able to reproduce the issue and has said it was due to a software update but even after updating the software, the issue persists. I am asking for this issue to be escalated as I use this vehicle to commute 90 miles to work each day and almost every other day, I get the same issue with the cruise control turning off during my drive. There is not a set location that it turns off at. There is not a certain amount of miles it will turn off at. It is always random. Weather is not a factor either. I am extremely upset that I continue to have this issue and the issue has yet to be resolved 5 years later. Please let me know what options I have.

Issue happens whenever I use adaptive Cruise control for any extended period of time. Typically occurs in less than an hour. The vehicle will be in active cruise mode and then the cruise control will suddenly shutoff and a few beeps are heard. I am unable to reactivate cruise control until I perform a key cycle at which point the cruise can be activated again.

I am reporting a severe steering safety defect on my 2022 Honda Civic that matches the symptoms of NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-744 and Honda TSB 23-037.At highway speeds (40–70 mph), the steering wheel "sticks" or "notches" in the center position. To make small lane adjustments, I must apply significant force to "break" the wheel loose. This causes the car to jerk or overcorrect, creating a high risk of a collision. Additionally, there is a metallic clicking/knocking noise coming from the steering rack during low-speed maneuvers.I have contacted Honda Corporate, but they denied a repair because my specific VIN has not yet been uploaded to the 24V-744 recall database, despite the vehicle exhibiting the exact manufacturing defect (swollen worm gear/high friction) described in the recall. The vehicle has approximately 62,000 miles and the issue has been persistent since 40,000 miles.I am requesting that NHTSA investigate why my production batch is excluded from the current recall despite having an identical steering gearbox failure that renders the vehicle unsafe to drive.

Cruise control suddenly stopped working along with 5 warnings on dash which indicated to take vehicle to Dealer. This occured out of the blue, at 80,000 miles, with no prior indication of a problem and after a steering recall about months ago in August. Dealer says the power steering rack motor and plugs have melted. They claimed they had no idea how. Dealer wants approx. $10K to fix, wants me to replace the Steering rack and motor along with entire Wiring harness. this Assembly is about 3 inches from the muffler and a flimsy small heat guard. There are no signs of a fire, this is an overheating issue caused by poor engineering.

Recall repair completed 6/13/2025 (steering related recall) A steering recall repair was completed on 6/13/20025 on my vehicle. The steering felt normal for approximately one week then began sticking again and has progressively worsened. The steering now binds and physically "grabs" 100% of the time. While navigating through curves, the steering wheel remains in the turned position and does not return smoothly to center. When attempting to correct, the steering overcorrects due to the binding sensation. This has resulted in at least two near-collision events. The vehicle is driven approximately 70 highway miles daily, creating a significant safety concern. No steering warning lights are illuminated. Additionally, adaptive cruise control also intermittently stops working while driving and will not re-engage until the ignition is turned off and restarted. When attempting to re-engage, the system emits three beeps and will not activate. The vehicle was evaluated at an authorized Honda dealership on 3/2/2026. The dealer stated they could not reproduce the steering or adaptive cruise control issue. A brake switch circuit code (C0041-14) and condensation in a taillight assembly were noted, and taillight replacement was suggested before further diagnosis. However, the steering binding continues during normal operation. An aftermarket lighting module (installed by a prior owner years ago) was noted. However, the vehicle has been serviced, and a 21-point inspection performed several times, of which revealed no issues with either the taillight or the installed lighting. The vehicle did have steering issues before the recall repair and had every symptom that was stated in the recall. After the repair there were no issues for at least a week, even with the aftermarket component being present, and then the malfunction returned and worsened as time went on. This condition poses a serious safety risk. The vehicle is available for inspection.

The vehicle experiences an intermittent engine and/or electrical system failure causing the car to losing acceleration while driving. The exact component has not been identified because the failure is intermittent. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The problem has not been duplicated by the dealership, and they have declined to repair the vehicle on that basis. However, the issue continues to occur intermittently despite being reported. The vehicle has been presented to an authorized Honda dealership for inspection. The manufacturer has not identified the cause due to the intermittent nature of the failure. No inspection has been performed by police or insurance representatives. There are no consistent warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. The vehicle looses acceleration suddenly and without warning. The problem first started about a month ago and most recently happened today when our car was almost rear ended due to the car loosing acceleration drastically on its own.

Crash reported2 injuries reported

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, I was driving a 2022 Honda Civic Sport with my wife in the passenger seat when the vehicle’s driver-assist/steering system unexpectedly intervened and caused the vehicle to veer off the roadway and down a steep embankment (approximately 40–50 feet) without driver input. I attempted to correct the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to respond as expected. There was no intentional steering command to leave the roadway. The vehicle appeared to steer itself, resulting in a crash. Both occupants sustained injuries. I suffered a neck/collarbone injury and a concussion. My wife suffered a concussion, a large laceration to her outer right calf, and bruising. Medical treatment was required and was sought at urgent care. After the incident, warning indicators were present on the dashboard. I later became aware that this model year has known complaints and recalls related to steering, lane-assist, or driver-assist system malfunctions. These issues were not disclosed at the time the vehicle was purchased used from a dealership. This appears to be a serious safety defect that poses a risk of injury or death to drivers and passengers. The vehicle is currently unsafe to operate.

The vehicle will randomly say these warnings: Brake system problem. Brake performance may be reduced. See your dealer. Brake hold system problem. Apply brake when stopped. See your dealer. Anti-lock brake system problem. Brake performance may be reduced. See your dealer. Vehicle stability system assist problem. Reduced traction and handling. See your dealer. Electric parking brake system problem. Parking brake not available. See your dealer. I have shut the vehicle down and checked the VSA with no leaks and full fluid in reservoir. I checked the harness and the wires are great. I checked the the brake unit to make sure they were not loose. I also checked the parking button and observed it to be clean from debris. This is happening to multiple people with the new Honda Civics and has now became a safety as it will make the vehicle brake slower and not be available for forward collision. Is anyone else dealing with this and what was the fix. Thanks.

Found out the my car has a recall last december 2024. I drove to my dealership and told them about it. they said they dont have available parts for the recall in my car and the service advisor I talked to was told me that they have the parts for the recall but they prioritize the newer car so that they can sell it. then I called the manufacturer and let them know what the dealership was told me. 2 days later the manufacturer called me and said that they contacted my dealership and letting me know that they were be able to fix my car about the safety recall. but after I drove my car to my dealership and got it fixed and its all good as they said, but when I drove my car nothing change and its gets more difficult to control the steering wheel until now. most drivers thinks I'm drunk and keep their distance away from my car. then I brought my car back to the dealership and told them about it and they said they already done the repaired and got it fix but the repaired seems unsuccessful.

Went to start my car one night after it had been perfectly fine throughout the day when 5 warning lights came on, Lane Keeping assist system, Collision mitigation braking system, Road Departure mitigation system. Auto High Beam problem and Adaptive Cruise Control system problem. I immediately went online to see how i could possibly fix the problem and found numerous message boards with people with fairly new low mileage Hondas complaining about the same issue and stating either various completely different solutions or no luck finding a solution. Other than those warning lights everything else on the car is functioning right and the battery is still in good shape.

while in park, out of the blue, four different types of ADAS lights came on the dashboard all at the same time. (ACC, Collision mitigation system problem, road departure mitigation system problem, & brake system). Cruise control, automatic, high beams, etc. no longer worked. Dashboard said to take the car to the dealership. at the dealership, Honda said there was a malfunction with the radar sensor. They ran the diagnostic test, and after updating the system, the problem was fixed.

We purchased our Honda in 2022. Within three months the lane departure system was failing. The wheel was jerky and at times difficult to correct. This occurred while staying in lane and not close to lines on the road. We took it in they identified the issue and replaced it. Within nine months it failed again. This time even worse. They identified it was the same issue. This was December of 2023. Our dealership advised it would be three months to get the necessary parts in. Three months passed. We called, part not in would be another three months. We called back December of 2024. Was advised Honda had canceled the part delivery. I assume due to recall. We would have never been notified had we not been persistent in calling. A letter or phone call from dealership of Honda would have been nice. The excuses were unacceptable. Our concerns were never addressed as the customer service in this issue was non-existing. Our vehicle is getting worse and still this part has not been replaced. Unexcusable. This car had 300 miles on it when purchased, brand new.

I rented this car. The adaptive cruise worked great in the daytime, but when it got dark and started to rain, the system started to lose its ability to detect other vehicles. Instead of disabling itself like it should have, the system continued to operate. It often would detect vehicles intermittently, speeding up and slowing down randomly and abruptly. The worst incident was when I was behind an unloaded flatbed semi (again, it was dark and raining.) The car lost track of the semi and accelerated to my set speed. As I got closer, but not THAT close, the car suddenly thought I was much closer than I was and initiated automated emergency braking. It then lost sight of the semi and repeated this cycle a few more times before I turned off cruise control. There was no one behind me, or this could have been a serious accident. I looked in the owner's manual to see how to disable the system and was appalled to see that it uses a single camera instead of a radar. This is obviously unsafe in bad weather, and the system did not disable itself appropriately.

[XXX] The power steering column locked up while driving down [XXX] causing an incident that caused the car to become a total loss. A police report was generated where II stated the power steering column locked which caused the incident, I informed my insurance company immediately and throughout the dealings with my insurance company and Honda Collision center I kept stating the steering column locking as the issue. I even reached out to Honda Automobile Customer spoke to Danielle and Casey at 1-888-234-2138 on 10/4/2024 at 3:36 pm in which I was advised of the recall inspect EPS part 23089. Honda Collision center advisor drove the car around the parking lot and made an assumption it was not the power steering column. I have since 8/31/2024 have been looking for an attorney to sue Honda and now I have the recall letter sent by Honda I hopefully will be able to retain one. When I tried to start the vehicle on 10/14/24, it did not start, however it started showing various messages on the electronic dashboard. The vehicle was towed to John Eagle Honda Of Dallas (Honda Dealer) on 10/14/24 around 11:15 AM. I am enclosing the diagnostic report run on the vehicle by the John Eagle Honda of Dallas on 10/15/24 which shows some of the messages I had seen on the dashboard. My dashboard never showed me low battery at any time but the car did not start and the message of lane departure, brake failure messages came on the dashboard. I have LoJack App service on my phone which tracks everything on my vehicle.I used the vehicle on 10/11/24 and 10/12/24 and there was no issue in the vehicle nor did I see any dashboard warnings. The dealer kept the car overnight stating that they were too busy on 10/14/24 and promised me that they will provide alternate vehicle on 10/15/24 morning as per my phone call. I went to the dealership on the 15th at 8:50 AM to pick up the alternate vehicle, the service advisor said I can take my vehicle since he had changed the battery and it was safe to drive and did not provide me the invoice for the replaced battery. I asked the service advisor for the diagnostic report and he informed me that everything was okay in the report. I insisted on taking the print out of the diagnostic report and had to wait to collect it. Seeing the time on the report I am able to understand that they ran the diagnostic report while I was waiting. After driving my vehicle from the dealership and not having new battery invoice in my hand I called Honda motor company customer service and narrated my dealership visit details along with being uncomfortable on the safety of the vehicle. I didn't get any help from them as well. They created a case number for me. They said that someone will reach out to me and no one has till date. I got this car (2022 honda civic touring) as preowned a little over 2 months ago. It had 39k miles. I inspected the car and thought it looked perfect and so I got it. In getting it, i opted out on getting extended warranty for personal reason. However the car had 60 days dealer warranty. After several times driving it, i noticed that my arms get sore. I thought it was just the way it drives. I drove one of my friends car which is the same car same year and it just drives way smoother. Mine is really sticky. I have to really put effort into keeping the wheel straight. When i make slight turns, the wheel doesnt go back to going straight, it gets stuck, so i have to pull it again to go straight. I heard about the recall on this car about the steering. I brought it in to honda but they said that my car isnt affected by it and that my part was okay. Due to my schedule i was only able to bring it in until almost the dealer warranty expires. However, they said that the car was fine, that they didnt notice the issue ive been experiencing. They told me that it drove good and advised me to get an allignment done. By the time the allignment place was able to get me in, the warranty had already expired and so i was really hoping that the allignment would fix it. Unfortunately, it didnt not. My steering is still so stiff/sticky. I dont know what to do.

My car was purchased used with 79k miles and the longer the car is running, the stiffer the steering wheel becomes. Any small moments are stiff and make the car jerk to much and it causes me to have to fight to keep the car in a straight line while driving. Lane keeping assistance is also driving way too close to one side since the steering wheel causes the car to struggle to make any small changes. It gets close to cars that are next to me and can potentially cause an accident if I make one small move. They appeared for me on 8/15 and I purchased this car on 8/14. A steering wheel should be smooth and not so stiff. I have an appointment coming up on Monday for a diagnostic but I am afraid they’ll tell me it’s out of warranty or there is nothing wrong with it. Which is impossible since so many others like me are having the same issue. My car needs to become part of this recall to be able to afford to change the steering shell rack or fix what needs to be fixed for my safety and those around me.

22-24 Honda civic Steering rack recall I feel to have no control of my vehicle and that my life as well as others are put at risk. I took my car to Honda for the safety inspection for the active recall they falsely dismissed according to Honda corporate. Nothing has been inspected other than my safety inspection when the dealership passed my car. I scheduled an appointment for a diagnosis as corporate told me to do after speaking to them, but the dealer didn’t do the diagnosis on my vehicle they just drove it and said it’s driving normal but once we returned they ordered a whole new steering rack for my vehicle after the service department passed my vehicle, but then informed me they sent the steering rack back and that I needed to go to the dealership I purchased my car from which is 41 minutes away after I stated the driving conditions of my vehicle and the potential risk to myself as well as others on the roadway.”refusal of service” Lane departure signal this started 1/17/24 to be exact but has became more of a quite frequent issue since then.

All of the lights come on periodically (lane departure can’t be used, it says braking system error, it says braking system could be decreased and says to have car serviced) I’ve taken it to the dealership once and they could not replicate it and said it could be a sensor but wasn’t sure I paid for a inspection because they didn’t know. Searching things now there are a ton of forums with the same problem for the same model and make.
