What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Honda CR-V, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Power door locks do not work and driver side door lock can't be push down at all and will not open when locked.
I have read of several air bag recalls. This car has an air bag light that comes on the dash.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
HAVE LOST POWER TO BOTH LOW BEAM LIGHTS CONSECUTIVELY AND RANDOMLY EVERY MONTH OVER THE PAST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE REPLACED HEADLIGHTS MULTIPLE TIMES AND LOST LOW BEAMS ESPECIALLY ON DRIVERS SIDE DURING COMMUTE AT NIGHT ON THE FREEWAY.
THE BULBS IN MY LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHTS CONTINUALLY BURN OUT WHILE IN MOTION, USUALLY ON A RURAL HIGHWAY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING, ESPECIALLY ON DARK COUNTRY ROADS. TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, I AM HAVING TO REPLACE THE BULBS 3-4 TIMES PER YEAR ON EACH HEADLIGHT. FROM A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH, I CAN SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR MANY, MANY HONDA CRV OWNERS. IT LOOKS LIKE THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE FOR THE 2002-2004 MODELS (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V136000) - WILL YOU PLEASE EXPAND THIS RECALL TO INCLUDE THE 2005? IF BOTH HEADLIGHTS GO DARK AT THE SAME TIME, IT WILL PROBABLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. WITH THIS HAPPENING SO OFTEN ON THE 2005, THE LIKELIHOOD OF AN ACCIDENT INCREASES. PLEASE HELP. (THE LATEST DATE OF 12/1/2020 WHEN MY LIGHT BURNED OUT IS IN THE FIELD BELOW, BUT IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES THIS YEAR.)
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Master Power Window Control Switch failed operating the Passenger power window regulator. While driving, the front passenger regulator popped and the window started falling down all by itself. It happened by a glass repair company, so I asked them what happened. He said when the voltage going to the regulator is not uniform, the regulator will pop and the window will drop down. He offered to repair it for $200 including parts which I thought was a fair price. I went to a website where they tell you if any parts on your vehicle have been recalled. It did include a master power window control switch for a 2005 Honda CR-V. So I called Middletown Honda, (NY) and they said the master Power Window Control Switch was $405. My car was not included in the recall (which only included switches made in the U.K) and they would only see the car if they could get a new Master Power Window Switch. I proceeded to tape up the window which dramatically reduces visibility to the rear view mirror and to side traffic on the highway. I don't have comprehensive insurance on my car and don't want to report it to my insurance company as I am [XXX] old reducing the chances of getting insurance from another company. The airbag light has been coming on and off since this incident leaving me with another unknown electrical problem. I told Middletown Honda that I would probably junk the car, but due to the car's age, they offered no comment, (the car is a 2005 Honda CR-V EX AWD). INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
There was no tell tail signs, my son and I got out of the vehicle and walked inside the Hampton Inn in deming nm standing in line waiting some lady runs in saying there's a car on fire outside so I walked outside and saw it was my car. A fire extinguisher was used the battery and driver side headlight was melted fire damage on driver side only
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The vehicle becomes a hazard due to faulty PCM/ECM software. The sudden loss of power and hesitation creates an unpredictable driving environment, leaving the driver and others vulnerable to T-bone collisions or rear-end accidents. This is a documented software glitch identified in Honda TSB 08-089 "MIL comes on with DTC P1009" yet the manufacturer refuses to provide the necessary software flash to rectify the safety hazard. The issue has been reproduced through live data logging. It is a persistent failure that occurs when the vehicle reaches operating temperature (188 degrees F) Timing advance will retard into the negatives, causing unpredictable hesitation, struggle with going up hills, and inappropriately retards when deaccelerating. Honda refuses to preform the software update despite a recent $3703 engine rebuild, citing the vehicles age as a reason to ignore the service warranty and known software defect.
The contact owns a 2005 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated and stalled. The contact stated there was an abnormal sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure recurred, and the contact parked the vehicle and had not driven the vehicle due to the safety concern. The failure mileage was approximately 209,300.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am constantly having my ability to see interrupted by oncoming cars with 3000+ lumen white light bulbs both on the freeway and highway. I have to hold my hand between me and them to prevent the view of my field from being obscured. I also have to aim my rear view mirrors up or at the ground if an especially bright car is behind me, even if its almost a mile behind me. I do not have bad night vision or any eye abnormalities, thousands of people are complaining about this. These headlights do not improve safety, these sort of things should be required to turn off whenever another driver is in front of you. furthermore, when a car is in front of you then that car's headlights are illuminating things far ahead, you dont need your own headlights to go that far.
The contact owns a 2005 Honda CR-V. The contact stated the vehicle had previously been repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V768000 (Visibility, Electrical System), and the power window switch on the driver’s side was replaced with a water-resistant switch. The contact stated while opening the front driver’s side door, the power window switch was wet from previous rainfall. In addition, the contact noticed after attempting to roll down the four windows, the power window switches failed to respond. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
As I was driving home from work last week 04/22/25, I noticed a drop in the rear passenger side and an odd noise I had never heard before. I only live 3 blocks from work and I immediately pulled it in the garage and put it up on the jack. Once I removed my drivers side rear tire and got a closer look, I found that my drivers side rear trailing arm and the frame have rusted through and completely broke. My vehicle had just been inspected 5 months earlier with no issues and is parked in a dry garage at all times when not in use.
Passenger rear trailing arm broke off from body mount. Vehicle is still available for inspection. Coming to a stop sign and car came to an abrupt stop. Something had stopped the car before I even got to the stop sign. Coming down to the stop sign car began to lost steering and swayed back and forth. Car is in very good condition has 138,100 miles on it. But now it can,t be driven cant be fixed and be safe. Still books for $3200.00. Our family was left vulnerable to a horrible accident if going any faster when this happened. Broke down on a back road at 10:30 p.m. close to a stop sign. Had to be towed. A recall of the 2007 to 2011 CR-V. stated that this happens to those models. They didn't go back far enough on this recall and if I hadn't told people who still have the 2005- 2006 model they wouldn't have known and this could happen to them. Vehicle was inspected by insurance co. and Honda dealership and reported to Honda corp. Rust no coverage or repair for this vehicle. Mechanic looked at can't repair and make safe. Same problem as those vehicles recalled. But because it wasn't on the recall list there is nothing they can do about this vehicle. This left me, my loved ones vulnerable to a serious accident if I had been on a freeway let alone on any road going 50 and above in speed. No warnings what so ever that this could happen. No messages, no lamps no letters from Honda nothing.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKAGE FROM POWER STEERING HOSE. I NOTICED THERE WERE RECALL FOR HONDA ACORD BUT NOT FOR CR-V. I READ ALL REVIEWS AND SEEMS IS RISKY AND COULD CATCH FIRE.
THE LOCKING MECHANISM FOR THE TILT STEERING WHEEL NOT STAY IN A LOCKED POSITION. MINE WILL NOT LONGER STAY IN THE LOCK POSITION AT ALL. IT REMAINS IN THE DROPPED DOWN UNLOCKED POSITION CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL TO MOVE UP AND DOWN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. IT IS ALSO A HAZARD WHEN GETTING OUT OF THE CAR AS YOU CAN CATCH YOUR LEG WITH IT AND POSSIBLE INJURE YOUR LEG.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
I was driving in town so, each block has either a stop sign or a traffic light. I realized that my brake pad seemed to get spongy. At the red light as I was nervous that there was something wrong I looked down and seen a light blinking but, it was my oil light. After heading to the next block my brakes were suddenly not doing anything and the pedal went down to the floor. I was not going fast so I decided that if I had to I would pull the emergency brake. I did that as well to no avail. I went to the closest parking lot and checked all my fluid. My oil was fine, my brake fluid was low. I added brake fluid and went on my way. The following day I left my home as usual and another light came on. The oxygen sensor. I'm not sure why the vehicle is doing this as I do keep up with maintenance. I have spoken with a mechanic , his assessment was it could be anything yet seems to be electrical. I did some research do to the fact that my car has been with me since 2009 (used). I would love to keep my car for as many more years as possible but, I also have to be safe. At this point it has to be something wrong with the products I'm using on my vehicle.
Slowed down to turn left into a driveway. As I turned, the car accelerated and the engine RPM crossed 5000. Had the brakes depressed but the vehicle accelerated and crashed into the garage door. The problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or an independent service center. The smog check was performed at a test center less than a month ago and passed. Engine light came on intermittently a couple times between the smog test and the day of the crash.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
I PURCHASED A NEW 2015 HONDA CRV EXL. PICKED IT UP ON EVENING OF 2/18/15. I DROVE IT BACK AND FORTH TO WORK, APPROX. 30 MILES ROUND TRIP THE NEXT TWO DAYS. I NOTICED VIBRATION AND FELT SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT. THE CAR SAT IN MY DRIVEWAY THE WEEKEND DUE TO BAD WEATHER. I DROVE TO WORK MONDAY AND TUESDAY AND THE VIBRATION WAS TERRIBLE. I DRIVE IN VERY SLOW MOVING TRAFFIC. WHILE ACCELERATING, IT FEELS LIKE A BUMPY RIDE ON UNEVEN ROADWAY. THIS MAKES ME FEEL VERY UNSAFE! ESPECIALLY WHILE GOING AROUND CURVES. WHILE STOPPED AT RED LIGHTS, THE STEERING WHEEL AND SEATS VIBRATE. EXACTLY ONE WEEK FROM PICKING UP MY VEHICLE, I'M BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER DRIVING MY CAR AND EXPERIENCING MY CONCERNS. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK IN AGAIN FOR THE SERVICE MANAGER TO CAPTURE THE VIBRATION ON VIDEO TO BE SENT TO HONDA. I CONTACTED HONDA OF AMERICA AND NOW HAVE A CASE MANAGER. PLEASE DO SOMETHING TO HELP ALL OF US WHO HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF BY HONDA AND THEY ARE STILL SELLING THESE DEFECTIVE CARS! *TR
MY HUSBAND WAS ON THE WAY HOME AFTER A VISIT TO GEORGIA,HE WAS JUST WEST OF TALLAHASSEE WHEN THEE CAR STARTED ACTING LIKE IT WAS OUT OF GAS, JUMPING AND BUCKING. HE MANAGED TO GET IT OFF THE INTERSTATE AND THAT WAS IT NO PULLING NO NOTHING. WE CALLED OUR INSURANCE BECAUSE, BACK IN APRIL WE HAD A ACCIDENT AND THE CAR HAD TO GO BACK INTO THE SHOP SEVERAL FOR DIFFERENT REASONS, EACH TIME MY HUSBAND SAID "THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT ACTING RIGHT, THERE IS SLACK ACTION EVEN ON THE DAY HE LEFT WHICH BELIEVE WAS 29TH OF SEPTEMBER HE STOPPED AT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP HERE IN PENSACOLA AND WAS TOLD "YOU HAVE A LITTLE WATER BUT SHOULD BE OK. WELL BY THE END OF THE WEEK, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT THE CAR IS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND UNDRIVABLE. TOWED BACK TO TALLAHASSEE AND FOUND A MOTEL (ONLY ROOM AVAILABLE 200$ A NIGHT. I GOT MY CAR BACK YESTERDAY TO THE TUNE $4607.00 WOW!!!!! IS THERE ANY INFORMATION ON TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS? WE THINK IT WAS CAUSED BY THE ACCIDENT OR AT THE LEAST THE ACCIDENT HELPED THE DEMISE OF THE TRANSMISSION. IN YOUR OPINION IS THIS POSSIBLE? STILL VERY HARD TO STEER. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THERE WAS SEVERE PULLING TO THE LEFT, THEY FINALLY FOUND THE FRONT STRUT WAS PULLED OUT OF THE ARMS THAT HOLDS IT IN PLACE, JUST LYING ON TOP, I BELIEVE THE FORCE OF THE OTHER CAR HITTING OURS CAUSED THIS PROBLEM, AND THE INSURANCE PAID THIS BUT THEY ARE SAYING THE ACCIDENT DID NOT CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *TR
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim

I PURCHASED A 2005 HONDA CRV IN 2018 OF FEBRUARY IN OZARK MISSOURI. IT WENT THROUGH A MISSOURI SAFETY CHECK AND PASSED A FEW MONTHS LATER I NEEDED TO COME BACK TO CALIFORNIA AND SINCE I'VE BEEN BACK WITHIN THREE MONTHS TIME MY ENGINE MY BELTS MY BRAKES MY STARTER MY ELECTRICAL SENSORS MY FUEL THEY HAVE ALL SEEM TO HAVE FAILED AND BEEN REPLACED BY A MECHANICAL I PAID IN DECEMBER 2018 I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE TO TAKE MY CAR IN SO THE AIRBAGS CAN BE CHECKED THE WHOLE ENGINE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM NEED CHECKING AS WELL BECAUSE IT'S NOT A SAFE CAR TO DRIVE AND I'VE BEEN FEELING THAT FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. IT STARTED OFF AS A GOOD CAR BUT ONCE I CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL EVERYTHING SEEM TO MALFUNCTION AND GO DOWN LIKE DOMINOES CAR HAS FAILED TO START SEVERAL TIMES HAS SHUT OFF WITHOUT NOTICE
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVERS SIDE DOOR LOCKS: THE DOOR LOCK ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WILL NOT LOCK OR UNLOCK THE DRIVERS DOOR UNLESS THE KEY IS USED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. TRYING TO UNLOCK/LOCK THE DOORS WITH THE REMOTE WILL WORK FOR ALL THE DOORS EXCEPT THE DRIVERS. TRYING TO UNLOCK/LOCK THE DOORS WITH THE KEY WILL WORK FOR ALL THE DOORS EXCEPT THE DRIVERS UNLESS YOU ARE USING THE KEY ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. *TR
THE DOOR LOCKS FAILED TO LOCK UNLESS A KEY WAS USED WHICH WOULD ONLY WORK ON THE FRONT DOORS. THE KEY WOULD NO LONGER UNLOCK THE DOORS UNLESS IT WAS MANUALLY. THE REAR BACK DOOR WOULD NOT LOCK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS JEOPARDIZED THE SAFETY OF MY CAR, AND MYSELF. I WENT TO APPLE TREE HONDA WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY DID NOT LET ME KNOW THAT THIS HAD BEEN A RECURRENT PROBLEM ON OTHER CARS. THEY CHARGED ME $587.50 TO REPLACE ALL THE LOCKS. *TR
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.

2005 HONDA CRV. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO DEFECTIVE BRIDGESTONE TIRE. *LD *TR
I WAS GETTING AN OIL CHANGE AND THE ATTENDANT DOING THE CHANGE POINTED OUT A PROBLEM WITH ALL FOUR OF MY TIRES. THE SIDEWALLS HAD MULTIPLE CRACKS IN THEM. SOME ARE AN INCH LONG AND LOOK DEEP. THE MANAGER OF THE FACILITY SAID THEY WERE CAUSED BY THE SUN. I CONTACTED MICHELIN AND THEY SEEMED TO AGREE. I DON'T BELIEVE IT. ALL FOUR TIRES HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I DON'T HAVE MY RECEIPT ANY LONGER. THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED IN FALL OF 2008. I THINK THE CRACKS ARE DANGEROUS AND COULD RESULT IN A BLOWOUT. I READ ABOUT 5 BLOWOUTS THAT OCCURRED WITH THESE SAME STYLE TIRES WHERE THE DRIVER DID NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE BLOWOUT. MAYBE THE TIRES HAD CRACKS. MICHELIN DOES NOT MAKE HARMONY TIRES ANYMORE. AT LEAST, I COULDN'T FIND ANY FOR SALE. TREAD DEPTH IS ABOUT 7/32". I HAVE PHOTOS THAT SHOW THE CRACKS WELL. I YOU WANT TO SEE THEM, LET ME KNOW. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA CR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FAILED TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED AND WERE REPLACED FOUR TIMES IN ONE YEAR. IN ADDITION, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTING FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT COULD NOT VIEW THE GAUGES. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC PROVIDED REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS AND INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTING, BUT THE FAILURES CONTINUED. THE CAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL FAILURES WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ALSO EXHIBITED TIRE CUPPING FOR THE REAR TIRES. THE TIRES HAD BEEN REPLACED EVERY 2.5 YEARS DUE TO EXCESSIVE TREADWEAR ON THE REAR TIRES. THE CONTACT HAD THE TIRES ROTATED EVERY 3,000 MILES; HOWEVER, THE REAR TIRE CUPPING CONTINUED. FIRST TEAM HONDA (3444 WESTERN BRANCH BLVD, CHESAPEAKE, VA 23321, (757) 337-6597) AND WILLIAMSBURG HONDA (7101 RICHMOND RD, WILLIAMSBURG, VA 23188, (757) 564-4671) WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
AFTER STARTING THE CAR I PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, TOOK OFF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE. MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE, BUT THE CAR TOOK OFF AT A HIGH SPEED AS IF I HAD FLOORED THE GAS PEDAL, AND WOULD NOT STOP WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I THREW THE GEAR INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME IN SEPTEMBER 2009 WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE LONG ISLAND EXPRESSWAY. AT THAT TIME THE BRAKE WOULD NOT STOP THE CAR, SO I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PULLED OFF THE ROAD, PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. IN SEPTEMBER 2009 I CALLED THE HONDA DEALER ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD NOT TO BRING THE CAR IN, THAT I MUST HAVE HAD THE MAT JAMMED ON TOP OF THE GAS PEDAL. THAT WAS NOT THE CASE TODAY OR IN 2009. THIS ISBA DEADLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS AND PUT OUT AN ALERT ON TV TO ALL CAR OWNERS THAT IF THEIR CAR SHOULD GET STUCK IN ACCELERATION MODE THEY SHOULD PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND TURN OFF THE IGNITION. THANK YOU. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 HONDA CRV ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO RACE AND THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY. I COULDN'T FEEL THE GAS PEDAL WITH MY FOOT. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER, AND TURN OFF THE IGNITION, STOPPING THE ENGINE. I MOVED THE DRIVER'S SEAT BACKWARD, GOT DOWN ON THE FLOOR TO LOOK, AND DISCOVERED THAT THE FACTORY-EQUIPPED FLOOR MAT HAD SHIFTED SO IT COVERED THE GAS PEDAL. I REMOVED THE FLOOR MAT, RE-STARTED THE CAR, AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE. BUT IF THIS PROBLEM STARTS CROPPING UP WITH OTHER '05 CRVS, IT IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR
