2013 Honda CR-V Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Severe frame rot on driver’s side of vehicle just forward of rear wheel. Rear control arm bolt support location has rusted away. Discovered August 5, 2024 when up on lift for a tire rotation. Garage advised vehicle unsafe to drive. Vehicle has 96,374 miles and is out of warranty. However, Honda issued a recall on 2007-2011 CRVs for same situation where vehicles were repaired or bought back. Vehicle has been inspected by 2 private garages, a Honda dealer, and a Honda collision center to assess repair options. We have been told not to drive the vehicle. I understand the warranty has expired however a failure could result in loss of control and a repair quote from a Honda collision center is $5,871.63. If the vehicle were in an accident insurance company would total it, per Arbella. Instead, we are left to spend more than 2/3 of its trade in value to repair it. It seems that the CRV frame issue was not limited to the 2007-2011 model years, and I believe we should receive consideration from Honda to repair or buy back the for a vehicle. It would appear more CRVs should be inspected for unsafe frame rot, and Honda should be held accountable for a design that does not let road salt and moisture drain.

The contact owns a 2013 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the swing arm bolt had fractured, and the sub-frame was severely corroded. The independent mechanic replaced the swingarm bolt; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the front suspension stabilizer bar had previously been replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 106,467.

The drivers side door is the only key hole available to unlock or lock the car. This key hole is jammed at a diagonal angle and will not accept a key in any way. Thus, whatever state the car is currently in (locked in my case) is the state that it will stay. No professional has checked it out. It is easily inspectable. There were no warnings by the car that this would happen, however, within 24 hrs before the door lock was jammed, the car wouldn't stay locked and would unlock and release the trunk door on its own while unattended.

The contact owns a 2013 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 MPH, the vehicle drove over a bump in the road and the steering wheel became unstable. The vehicle was driven to the local service center who diagnosed that the rear driver’s side lower control arm on the front suspension mount had separated from the unibody frame due to corrosion. The contact was informed that the entire unibody frame needed to be replaced to repair the control arm. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 158,000. The contact stated that they will no longer need this complaint. They contacted the dealership and they agreed to buy the vehicle and make the situation a fair settlement.

CONTINUOUS PROBLEM WITH REAR HATCH NOT OPENING WHEN COLD OUTSIDE; I LIVE IN MICH. THUS HAVE COLD WINTERS; NO PROBLEM WHEN WARM. PROBLEM STARTED IN 2017. I PD TO HAVE IT REPLACED 12/28/17; FAIL AGAIN 12/10/18 DEALER REPLACED AS UNDER WARRANTY; FAILED AGAIN 12/10/19 OUT OF WARRANTY(FRM 12/28/17)- SO HONDA WON'T FIX. IN REVIEWING INTERNET THE LATCH PROBLEM IS AN ISSUE WITH MANY OTHER CONSUMERS WHEN COLD O/S. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HONDA - THEN PANDEMIC HIT--JUST NOW REOPENING COMPLAINT- CASE#10291529- & AS THIS APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A CONSTANT COMPLAINT FRM MANY OTHERS; HONDA HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN 16-063 TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM AND SUPPOSEDLY HAVE A REDESIGNED LATCH. BUT IT ONLY COVER VEHICLES UNDER WARRANTY. THUS I WILL HAVE TO PAY TO GET THE NEW IMPROVED PART, WHEN THE ORIGINAL AND REPLACEMENT PART WERE1 BAD IN THE PAST.. NOT BEING ABLE TO GET INTO THE REAR/TRUCK OF YOUR CAR IS A SAFELY HAZARD IN THE WINTER-REAR TRUCK IS WHERE YOU KEEP THE SPARE TIRE, EMERG. SUPPLIES,ETC. (& STORE ITEMS /GROCERIES,LUGGAGE,ETC )

DOOR LOCKS ON 2013 HONDA CRV ARE NOT WORKING. SOMETIMES THEY WORK SOOOO WELL...I CAN'T EVEN UNLOCK THE DOOR !!!! AND SOMETIMES THEY DON'T WORK AT ALL. IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING ACTUATORS,,,,HAVE REPLACED 4 OF 5 DOORS. EACH REPLACEMENT IS ABOUT $200-$250. I LEARNED THROUGH RESEARCH THAT RECALL WAS IN EFFECT FOR CRV FROM 2007-2011. OBVIOUSLY, HONDA HASN'T SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

I GOT INTO MY CAR AND BECAUSE THE WEATHER WAS NICE, I TURNED OFF THE AIR CONDITIONER AND LOWERED THE BACK WINDOWS. I ENTERED THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, AND WHEN MY SPEED REACHED 40 MPH, A LOUD ROAR CAME FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR AND THE BACK STARTED SHAKING AND VIBRATING. I WAS SCARED AND PULLED OFF THE ROAD. I THOUGHT THE SUSPENSION OR THE WHEELS/TIRES HAD FAILED. I MADE A VISUAL INSPECTION AND COULD SEE NO PROBLEM. A HONDA DEALER WAS NEAR, SO I SLOWLY DROVE TO THEIR SERVICE BAY. WHEN I TOLD MY PROBLEM TO A WOMAN AT THE SERVICE DESK SHE IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A COMPRESSION PROBLEM THAT ALL OF THESE VEHICLES HAD WHEN THE BACK WINDOWS WERE DOWN. I ASKED IF THE SALESPERSONS WERE SUPPOSED TO TELL THE CUSTOMER ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND SHE SAID NO.

A RODENT BUILT A NEST IN THE BLOWER MOTOR OF OUR 2013 HONDA CR-V. THE RODENT NEST AFFECTED THE OPERATION OF THE MOTOR, AND CAUSED RODENT CONTAMINATED AIR TO BE CIRCULATED THROUGHOUT THE CABIN. THIS HEALTH HAZARD COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED BY INSTALLING SCREENING THAT WOULD PREVENT RODENTS FROM ENTERING THE BLOWER MOTOR. THE SCREENING IS TECHNOLOGICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE FOR HONDA MOTOR COMPANY, LTD. ("HONDA"). IN ADDITION TO THE SAFETY HAZARD, HONDA REFUSES TO COVER, UNDER WARRANTY, SERVICE AND REPAIRS FOR BLOWER MOTOR DAMAGE CAUSED BY INFILTRATING RODENTS DESPITE THE DESIGN DEFECT. AFTER REVIEWING COMPLAINTS AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET, IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE MANY CONSUMERS THAT HAVE BEEN SIMILARLY AFFECTING BY THE DESIGN DEFECT, AND BY HONDA'S UNWILLINGNESS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT. *TR

ON 2/10/2014, AROUND 8:50 AM EST I WAS ALONE AND DRIVING TO THE OFFICE WHEN MY CAR SKIDDED AND I LOST CONTROL. DUE TO THE MOMENTUM THE CAR HAD GAINED, IT WENT INTO A FREE SPIN. THOUGH THIS CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH AWD AND ABS, IT STILL COULD NOT CORRECT THE SKID AND WENT OUT OF CONTROL. IT DASHED AGAINST A TREE ON THE PATHWAY FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. THIS IMPACT RESULTED IN DRIVER SIDE AIR BAGS TO DEPLOY, HOWEVER IT EXPLODED INSTEAD OF INFLATING. THIS INCIDENT HAS RESULTED IN INJURIES TO MY HAND, NECK AND BACK. RECENTLY I HAVE HEARD RECALLS FROM HONDA RELATED TO FAULTY AIR BAGS, HOWEVER DID NOT FIND ANY OPEN RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE...UPDATED 02/25/15 *BF UPDATED 9/22/2017*CN
