2023 Honda CR-V Steering Problems

I purchased this vehicle in November 2025. There was an existing recall remedy under NHTSA 24V-744. In December 2025 I took my vehicle to Brickell Honda to have the official steering gearbox safety recall performed. However, the dangerous "sticky" and binding steering sensation remained. On July 30, 2026, the dealership diagnosed the car and confirmed that the entire power steering rack is bad and must be replaced at a cost of over $4,400.00. The dealership offered a 50% goodwill split, leaving me with a $2,251.00 out-of-pocket expense. I formally declined the 50% offer, and I requested that Honda Corporate cover 100% of the parts and labor to replace the steering rack. The initial recall remedy failed to resolve the safety hazard in my vehicle.

This complaint is a formal report of a FAILED RECALL REMEDY regarding NHTSA Campaign 24V-744 (Honda TSB 24-052) on a 2023 Honda CR-V (VIN: [XXX]). The official recall remedy (worm gear spring replacement and grease application) was previously performed and marked as completed on this VIN. However, the vehicle is actively exhibiting a complete reoccurrence of the exact severe safety defect described in the recall. At highway speeds, the steering wheel exhibits sudden "sticky," binding resistance, requiring increased physical effort to turn, which leads to immediate overcorrection and a severe crash hazard. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Honda dealership for diagnosis of the recurring symptom. The dealership service department confirmed there was an issue and recommended a total steering rack replacement. American Honda Corporate has refused to cover the replacement, claiming a "steering rack" is separate from the recall scope. However, the defective worm gear targeted by Campaign 24V-744 is located entirely within the steering gearbox, which is structurally integrated into the steering rack assembly. The manufacturer's remedy has failed to permanently cure the safety defect on this vehicle, leaving it unpredictable and dangerous to operate. I was driving in Houston and I tried to turn left to avoid someone hitting me from the back do to a slow down and I couldn’t turn left my gear was too stiff to turn. I got hit from behind and it turn into a hit and run. That affected me a lot due to the hurt and lack of work due to it all became behind and I am still suffering from that accident. I informed Honda and requested a buy back and help with the damages and losses but they denied the help and have affected my credit because since that accident it has been very hard for me to manage because of the recovery process.

Vehicle: 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid Component: Steering (Electronic Power Steering / EPS Gearbox) Description of Safety Defect: While driving at highway speeds (above 45 mph), the steering wheel experiences a severe "sticky," "notchy," or binding sensation. It catches when making minor directional adjustments, requiring excessive and abrupt physical force to break the wheel free. This causes a dangerous over-correction hazard, creating an immediate risk of a crash or loss of vehicle control. This vehicle is exhibiting the exact mechanical failure symptoms described in NHTSA Safety Recall 24V-744 (Honda Service Bulletin 24-052) regarding a swollen worm gear and overtightened spring preload. However, when entering my 17-digit VIN into the NHTSA lookup tool, the vehicle shows up as excluded from the current recall population. The local authorized Honda dealership has diagnosed the vehicle, confirmed a complete failure of the electronic power steering rack assembly, and quoted a $5,000 out-of-pocket replacement. I am filing this complaint to formally report that the manufacturing defect identified in Recall 24V-744 is actively impacting vehicles outside of Honda's currently defined VIN production window. I request that the NHTSA investigate and expand the recall population to include all 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid vehicles suffering from this systemic, catastrophic steering column failure.

I am reporting a Safety Recall Violation at Davis Honda [XXX] ). My 2023 CR-V was serviced for Recall 24-117. I was charged $175.66 for the alignment. Per Service Bulletin 24-117, this is a mandatory free part of the recall. Charging for a safety recall is a federal violation. Yesterday, Thursday February 29, 2026, the steering wheel and/or lane assist feature of my 2023 Honda CRV Sport Hybrid seemed to try to force my car over a cliff on a mountain road. I was driving from Crystal Mountain Ski Resort in Washington state returning to my home in Seattle WA when the steering wheel of my Honda seemed to stiffened or lock up at a curve in Crystal Mountain Blvd several miles from the ski resort. At the curve in the road I needed to turn left to avoid driving over a steep mountain embankment and the steering wheel required unusual force to turn left. Steering was problematic for the next 40 miles on State Route 410 driving northwest toward Enumclaw WA. I had to fight the steering wheel continuously as it seemed to direct the car left and right when the path of the road was straight. Unusual force was needed to control the steering. It felt like the car was being forced by the steering to move in directions that did not follow the course of the road. There was a sense of lack of control of the steering wheel, and in the instance of the curve in the road coming down the mountain, it felt like the car was trying to drive over a cliff. It was a sense of loss of control, and that the car was by itself driving off the road.

Steering was fixed in October 2023 we had purchased car in May of that year. The issue has returned except it feels now like the steering is moving on its own. This is the first time since repair this issue was noticed. This is very concerning. I have notified Honda. Dealer to date has not seen car they want to charge me to examiner vehicle which is still under warranty, which is why I called Honda. I told dealer I was concerned enough not to want to drive vehicle.

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The dealer was contacted on November 5th, 2024, and confirmed that parts would be available in January 2025. The contact called the dealer in January however, parts were not yet available. The contact then waited and contacted the dealer again in May 2025 and parts were still not yet available. The contact had not heard from the dealer since. Steering was stiff and difficult to handle car on turns. Lots of extra effort required when deviating from center. Overcorrection could easily cause an accident. Vehicle was recently acquired by dealership from auction. It needs to be added to the recall list.

It feels difficult to steer at times, almost takes more effort. I am concerned it will continue becoming more difficult and result in an accident. Yes it’s available for inspection. Being unable to steer properly puts my safety, passengers safety, and the safety of my surroundings at risk. Unsure if it’s been reproduced at a service center. It has been inspected, not for this issue. There are absolutely no warning lamps or symptoms prior.

My vehicle, 2023 CRV was purchased through here. Now it has a major Recall and they have been giving me the run around since while we drive an UNSAFE vehicle. As it states, “Due to the improperly manufactured electronic power steering (EPS) gearbox worm wheel and improperly set worm gear spring, friction between the worm wheel and worm gear can rise, resulting in additional steering effort and difficulty, increasing the risk of a crash or serious injury.” I reached out 3 times and was lied too about part not being there. Just talked to Honda, they said part has been available for 2 month now. This is supposed to be done within 60 days, but I haven’t heard back for 5 to 6 months now. Everytime I call, there is no supervisor available and all techs are busy. I have 3 kids that ride in this car and need it fixed asap

I was in the collision accident on the service road when my new Honda CR-V 2023 started skidding to the left while I was making the smooth turn to the right, the vehicle was pulling to the left side of the road, hitting the metal guardrail on the driver side. Looked like I lost traction and skid from left then to the right , unable to control and maneuver the steering wheel. The vehicle was in steering recall but I was not aware of that, did not receive any notice of the recall. If this accident had never happened I probably would continue driving the unsafe vehicle and be more in a severe crash. The vehicle' steering column did not work and the vehicle was not drivable after the accident, and was towed to the car repair shop. I immediately notified the State Farm insurance about the collision but nobody told me I had to call the police.

The steering wheel in my 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring is "sticking" when going around wide turns on the highway. This issue is not experienced while driving around city streets. It feels like the steering wheel gently locks into place, but can easily be dislodged by giving it a little more turning pressure. The sticking sensation feels as though it has progressively been getting more pronounced in the past few months. This would certainly become a major safety issue if the steering wheel locks up completely at highway speeds. I have contacted the Honda Service Center at my local dealership regarding this issue. No warning lamps or messages appear on the dashboard and the latest Vehicle Health Report which I receive via email every month reports no issues.
