Momentary Increased Steering Effort
On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. 2023 Honda CRV hybrid bought from dealership in Clarksville, Indiana. at 63,000 miles the head gasket blew causing major damage. Regular maintenance and oil changes done. Technician said the component just failed for no known reason and exploded. Repair priced at $5300 Honda Corporation refusing to provide any assistance. Research shows many people having same issues of blown head gaskets at only around 60,000 miles of CRV Hybrid.

I purchased this vehicle in November 2025. There was an existing recall remedy under NHTSA 24V-744. In December 2025 I took my vehicle to Brickell Honda to have the official steering gearbox safety recall performed. However, the dangerous "sticky" and binding steering sensation remained. On July 30, 2026, the dealership diagnosed the car and confirmed that the entire power steering rack is bad and must be replaced at a cost of over $4,400.00. The dealership offered a 50% goodwill split, leaving me with a $2,251.00 out-of-pocket expense. I formally declined the 50% offer, and I requested that Honda Corporate cover 100% of the parts and labor to replace the steering rack. The initial recall remedy failed to resolve the safety hazard in my vehicle.

The rock and pinion is not working. The is an issue with the fuel emission. Engine light is on for both.

On my 2023 Honda CR-V with 79,567 miles, the engine experienced a cylinder 1 misfire while driving, causing the vehicle to lose power and enter limp mode. At the same time, every warning light on the dashboard illuminated. The sudden loss of power created a serious safety risk because I was unable to accelerate normally and had to safely maneuver the vehicle out of traffic, increasing the risk of a collision. I took the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership, where the problem was confirmed and the engine was diagnosed with a blown head gasket. The vehicle has been inspected by the Honda dealership but has not been inspected by police, insurance representatives, or any other parties. Prior to this incident, there were no warning lights or messages indicating a problem.

The honda dealer states that the clip/ brackt that holds the multi view camera has broken. There is no damaged to the windshield or housing of the camera, the clip just failed and they could not tell me why. The vehicle has never been in any accident and has never had any damage. Adaptive cruise, cruise control, auto high beam, lane keep assist, Road departure, object detection, collision mitigation, traffic jam assistance, Sign recognition, and low speed braking control are not functioning as a result. Car is displaying multiple error messages. The honda dealer inspected and confirmed all the effective systems because the camera not being properly secure to the windshield by the broken clip.

This complaint is a formal report of a FAILED RECALL REMEDY regarding NHTSA Campaign 24V-744 (Honda TSB 24-052) on a 2023 Honda CR-V (VIN: [XXX]). The official recall remedy (worm gear spring replacement and grease application) was previously performed and marked as completed on this VIN. However, the vehicle is actively exhibiting a complete reoccurrence of the exact severe safety defect described in the recall. At highway speeds, the steering wheel exhibits sudden "sticky," binding resistance, requiring increased physical effort to turn, which leads to immediate overcorrection and a severe crash hazard. The vehicle was taken to an authorized Honda dealership for diagnosis of the recurring symptom. The dealership service department confirmed there was an issue and recommended a total steering rack replacement. American Honda Corporate has refused to cover the replacement, claiming a "steering rack" is separate from the recall scope. However, the defective worm gear targeted by Campaign 24V-744 is located entirely within the steering gearbox, which is structurally integrated into the steering rack assembly. The manufacturer's remedy has failed to permanently cure the safety defect on this vehicle, leaving it unpredictable and dangerous to operate. I was driving in Houston and I tried to turn left to avoid someone hitting me from the back do to a slow down and I couldn’t turn left my gear was too stiff to turn. I got hit from behind and it turn into a hit and run. That affected me a lot due to the hurt and lack of work due to it all became behind and I am still suffering from that accident. I informed Honda and requested a buy back and help with the damages and losses but they denied the help and have affected my credit because since that accident it has been very hard for me to manage because of the recovery process.

2023 CR-V Sport Hybrid suffered a catastrophic cylinder 3 coolant leak/head gasket failure at 76,884 miles. Due to a lack of available Honda gasket kits and extreme dealership repair quotes, a full engine replacement was required.
