2019 Honda Fit Engine Problems

Purchased great condition used 2019 Fit EX on XXX from local non-Honda dealership. Nearly 10 months later, on XXX the following errors appeared on the dash: tire pressure monitor system, emissions, hill start assist, lane deviation warning, power steering, and vehicle stability assist errors on the screen, and the check engine, tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle stability assist system, and electric power steering lights were also on. I took it to a local Honda service shop (Performance Kings Honda at [XXX]), and it was diagnosed as needing fuel injectors replaced (running too rich). I approved the repair for a total cost of $1,629.32, including the diagnostic fee, parts, labor, and taxes, on XXX. This was an identical issue to a used 2018 Honda Fit EX that I had purchased on XXX which had the same symptoms and was diagnosed as the same problem (fuel injectors) in XXX, and for which I submitted a separate NHTSA complaint. This is an issue for the NHTSA because it is a known issue on this make and model of car by owners and Honda. See the following: Honda Service Bulletins 21-007, 22-002, 23-042. Additionally, it's an issue I have had to deal with twice, on two separate vehicles, both of the same make and model, meaning it is likely an extremely prevalent issue for owners. Fuel injectors are an expensive repair, and they're known to be faulty on these vehicles by the manufacturer. Without correction, other major systems in the vehicle will fail, with issues such as engine misfire, overheating, catalytic converter failure, and catastrophic damage to the engine. Honda already knows this is an issue on the 2016 and 2017 models. The warranty extension they already issued for these years must be expanded or replicated to cover this issue, which has persisted in the 2018-2020 models. Multiple warning lights lit up after starting car and driving for a short distance (less than 5 feet). Honda mechanic diagnosed it as a misfire in cylinder likely due to carbon buildup or other unknown reason. Similar incidents have happened with other 2019 Honda Fit and an extension of warranty was issued for some vehicles but not all (SB 23-042). Unfortunately, mine was apparently not covered despite the same exact issue as other reported incidents.

The dealer retrieved DTC: P0304 (ECM Detected Repeated Misfire in Cylinder #4). The dealer linked the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 21-007; however, the vehicle was not covered under warranty or the bulletin. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and confirmed the information from the dealer, and the contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 55,666.

The check engine light came on. The vehicle was shaking/sputtering when idling. We took it into the dealership and they said we needed to replace the fuel injectors, despite the vehicle not even having 60,000 miles on it.

All warning lights cycle through on vehicle dashboard after turning on vehicle. Vehicle was taken to Honda Auto Service Center, where issue is diagnosed as Carbon Buildup, causing misfires. Error Diagnostic Code is one of P0300 - P0304. After maintenance, error clears out. However, there is a Honda Service Bulletin 23-042 which provides a warranty extension for Honda Fits of the same year, make, and model with the same issue, which my vehicle's VIN was not included as eligible. Issue of carbon buildup causing misfires may apply to other VIN ranges than in that bulletin, as accounted by NHTSA ID #11462041, #11490506, #11549767, and #11593466

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Fit. The contact stated that while entering the driveway while idling, the accelerator pedal was not depressed when the vehicle accelerated inadvertently. The brake pedal was then depressed but failed to respond. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a building, a hose, and a palm tree where it came to a stop. The vehicle remained at the scene of the crash. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact sustained injuries to both knees and medical attention was required. A police report was not filed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Dear NHTSA, I am submitting a complaint regarding unsafe vehicle service practices by Indy Honda, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. On December 8, 2023, I had my 2019 Honda Fit serviced at their dealership, including an oil change. On [XXX], while traveling on the interstate in Kentucky, my vehicle suddenly experienced a catastrophic engine failure. The vehicle’s lights illuminated without warning, followed by loud popping sounds, and it began smoking. As I slowed down to pull over to the side of the road, the car swerved and stalled. After investigation by Fidelity Warranty and a certified Honda dealership, it was determined that the engine failure was caused by an improperly tightened drain plug and crush washer, leading to a complete loss of engine lubrication. Despite providing substantial evidence and attempting to resolve the matter, Indy Honda has refused to take responsibility for the damages. This failure created a hazardous situation while driving at high speeds on the interstate, posing significant risks to my safety. I kindly request that the NHTSA investigate Indy Honda’s servicing practices and take appropriate action to prevent similar safety risks for other consumers. Four dashboard warning signs (Check Engine Light, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Vehicle Stability Assist System, Electric Power Steering) appeared all at once suddenly. I had the vehicle towed to my local Honda dealership. They gave me a diagnostic code of P0304 and insisted that the repair did not fall under my car's active warranty. I searched the web and found it is a common problem in Honda Fits. Some 2019 Honda Fits have an extended warranty for fuel injection replacement, but it is not applicable to my car for an unknown reason. Relevant service bulletins: 23-042 and 21-007.

While driving the emission system problem warning came up on my dash with the check engine light. After this happened it became incredibly hard to accelerate the engine. I was driving on the freeway and attempting to merge putting my life and my families at risk because the engine was trying to accelerate but sputtering and stopping for a moment instead. It hasn’t been inspected by police, but went to dealer and got code P219A and was told this was a faulty fuel injector. This was the first time this had happened and no other warning lights came on before the emission system problem that popped up on the dash.

Engine light came on and it was brought to the dealership and I was told all fuel injectors need to be replaced and it wouldn't be under warranty. The car has 65,000 miles on which is just over warranty, but I should still not have had to replace these yet. There have been other problems with the fuel system with the fuel pump recall and they have extended the warranty on fuel injectors in other Honda vehicles, which leads me to believe this is a greater problem than just my car and it should still be covered by Honda.

Also, the vehicle would intermittently experience hard starting, the theft alarm would erroneously activate and the center of the steering wheel where the airbag was located would become warm to the touch.
