Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2015 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I first experienced an engine misfire in February 2025. The vehicle had a P0301 misfire code, and at the time I was unaware of Honda’s extended warranty related to this issue. We had a trusted mechanic friend inspect the vehicle and replace the spark plugs and ignition coils. He noted that there was significant carbon buildup. After those repairs, the vehicle appeared to run normally, and we believed the issue had been resolved. Later, I received Honda’s extended warranty notice and realized that the issue I experienced may have been related to the condition covered by the warranty. I contacted my local Honda dealership in August 2025 and explained the prior misfire, repairs performed, and the warranty notice I had received. However, because the check engine light was not currently illuminated, I was told there was nothing that could be done unless the vehicle was actively displaying the issue. I also contacted Honda Corporate regarding this matter. I was advised that reimbursement for some of the repairs I had already completed might be possible, but that it would need to be reviewed. I chose not to submit those receipts at the time because I was concerned that doing so might impact my ability to use the extended warranty coverage if the problem returned. Unfortunately, the issue appears to be progressing. On June 2, 2026, the vehicle set a P3400 code, which is related to the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. At that time, the oil level was low. After adding oil and completing several driving cycles, the check engine light turned off. However, the vehicle continues to consume oil at an alarming rate. I have had to add additional oil again in July. The problem is progressing - it is the issue that should be covered by warranty but holds refuses to do anything because the light isn’t currently on,

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. issued an official Warranty Extension in July 2025 covering engine misfires from piston ring deterioration (DTCs P0301-P0304) on 2013-15 Pilot and 2013-17 Odyssey vehicles. My 2015 Honda Odyssey (VIN: [XXX]) experienced this exact defect, resulting in severe engine misfires and secondary alternator failure caused directly by engine fluid saturation leaking onto it from the primary defect. I paid $5,275.80 for repairs prior to campaign awareness (Invoices XXX and XXX). I submitted complete reimbursement documentation on January 31, 2026. Honda has withheld my funds for 178 days (which is 122 days past their promised 8 week deadline) while corporate customer care agents falsely claim payment is “approved but pending final management sign- off.” I have called 11 times and corporate managers who are never available HAVE NEVER returned my calls like the representative with Honda I've spoken with each time assures. This deliberate delay subverts federal safety campaign integrity and artificially manages liability exposure. Request immediate enforcement action for an ongoing corporate warranty evasion pattern. Approximately 7 months ago, my 2015 Honda Odyssey experienced an engine misfire with code P0302 (cylinder 2). All spark plugs were replaced at that time and the issue appeared resolved. However, the misfire has now returned with the check engine light on, again indicating cylinder misfire. The vehicle only has 71,000 miles on it, which makes this recurring issue particularly concerning. Based on my research, this appears to be a known defect related to Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system causing excessive oil consumption and spark plug fouling — an issue documented across 2013–2017 Odyssey vehicles and addressed under Honda Service Bulletin 25-061. I am requesting this complaint be on record and urge NHTSA to investigate this as a safety-related defect.”

The car sporadically does not shift from 1st 2 second and then abruptly shuts cause a loud jerk of engine and car. It is startling and scary when it happens. I’m afraid the car will break down while in the road. Every time we take the car to dealership they “cannot replicate” issue therefore there is nothing to fix on an issue that is all over the internet with Honda vans and suvs.

I drove very slowly over a speed bump by my local public high school and my airbags deployed. My hand was burnt from the airbag, my insurer gave me 14K + to repair the car, but that was not enough and so I took the money and bought a different car. furthermore because of this , my insurer increased significantly my monthly premium. My young children were in the car and were terrified. My insurer also only paid for a certain amount of days with the rental car, and I had to pay out-of-pocket for the other days.

On December 31 at approximately 300 p.m., our 2015 Honda Odyssey experienced a sudden and complete loss of motive power while traveling eastbound on the Sam Houston Parkway South just after crossing the Buffalo Bayou Toll Bridge at highway speed. While driving normally, the Check ABS warning light illuminated. Immediately afterward, multiple dashboard warning lights began flashing and the engine abruptly shut down with no warning. The vehicle lost all ability to accelerate and became disabled in active traffic lanes. Steering and braking were severely affected due to the sudden loss of power. Hazard lights were activated while the driver attempted to move the vehicle from the middle lane to the shoulder. We narrowly avoided a collision and were able to stop near the Pine Avenue on-ramp. Once stopped, the vehicle completely shut off and would not restart. All vehicle systems appeared inoperative except for the hazard lights, indicating a possible electrical system failure. Emergency services were required due to the dangerous location. The vehicle was occupied by five people, including three children. The sudden loss of motive power at highway speed created an extreme safety hazard and could have resulted in serious injury or fatality.

A spool valve leak occurred leaking oil onto the alternator which caused it to fail when driving. When it failed, electrical systems started to shut down. At first, the ABS system indicator lit up. Multiple systems started to fail soon thereafter. Upon pulling over on the freeway, the vehicle was unable to go in reverse. The root cause was a spool valve leak that is well known and consequently puts drivers at risk when driving at high speeds. When driving down the interstate, all the electrical systems started to shut down. The ABS system was the first indicator, along with multiple electrical systems soon thereafter. Once pulled over, the vehicle could not go in reverse as well. I now understand this to be a well known issue as published in Honda Technical Service Bulletin TSB [XXX] However, no information was sent to owners even though Honda has known about the issue since at least March 2020. This puts unnecessary safety risks for those driving with oil leaking onto the alternator resulting in electrical system shutdowns and issues driving. I believe a recall and safety notice should be issued. Yes, the component was inspected by Honda and replaced. The first indicator was the ABS system warning light along with many other systems shutting down. This occurred at a high-rate of speed on the freeway. Upon pulling over, the vehicle also could not go in reverse. I am frustrated Honda has known abut this issue for many years, but has not informed owners nor offered to correct the issue leading to safety issues and costly repairs. I am submitting this urgent complaint regarding my 2015 Honda Odyssey, equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine referenced in (TSB) 20-023 which acknowledges that the front rocker arm oil control valve (spool valve) gasket may fail and leak engine oil directly onto the alternator located beneath it. This condition can cause alternator contamination, charging system failure, electrical malfunction, and potential fire risk due to oil exposure to electrical components. Despite knowledge of this issue, Honda did not notify vehicle owners and did not initiate a recall. Before the first breakdown occurred, I experienced a frightening and dangerous incident while in traffic. Without any human interference and without my pressing the accelerator, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and moved forward on its own, nearly striking the vehicle in front of me. I had to react immediately to prevent a collision. This unexpected surge was extremely disturbing and appeared to involve an electrical malfunction. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle broke down. After the first breakdown, I replaced the battery. Within approximately one hour of driving again, the vehicle failed again due to alternator failure. I was stranded at night, in darkness, alone, and exposed to active traffic. This created an immediate and foreseeable risk of collision, serious bodily injury, or death. Another car in that area around that time broke down on the highway I was expected to use and was hit by a semi on 95 and the driver of the stopped car was killed. That could have easily been me. A defect that can cause sudden electrical malfunction, unintended vehicle movement, loss of charging capability, vehicle disablement in traffic, and potential fire hazard constitutes a safety-related defect under federal motor vehicle safety standards. I respectfully request that you Initiate a formal investigation Evaluate whether a recall is warranted. Require reimbursement for repair costs Thank you very much.

I am deeply concerned about the sudden breakdown of my vehicle due to the spool valve leaking onto the alternator and caused the loss of power and stalling of the vehicle while driving out of town and on an Interstate. This was an extremely scary time for me and my family being stranded on an expressway for over an hour and trying to figure out how to get my kids and family to safety. I have heard of others having the same issue with the same make and model vehicle and their repairs was covered by Honda. I don't understand why my issue would be any different and why my repairs are not currently covered by the Honda service bulletin. I would extremely hope honda take a deeper look at including my Vin in the service bulletin. I now understand this to be a well known issue as published in Honda Technical Service Bulletin TSB [XXX] However, no information was sent to owners even though Honda has known about the issue since at least March 2020. Back hatchback glass spontaneously shattered. Nobody was in the vehicle and it was in the garage. So- nobody was hurt; however, this may not have been the case had we been riding down the highway. From my research this is not the first time this has happened with this model vehicle. I plan to contact Honda today, if that is possible. I have pictures that show it could not have been hit by an object. It obviously was under pressure and caved from the sides.

12/21/23: Wheelchair ramp and kneel function failed with no warning. This engaged safety feature that disables gear shift and keeps car in park. Unable to move car or deploy ramp using back-up override. Called Mobility Works (authorized VMI dealer). Troubleshooting failed to deploy ramp or kneel function. Told only option was to pop off tab next to gear shift and insert screwdriver to override “park” lock. Fortunately, quadriplegic spouse was not in the vehicle or he would have been trapped. 12/26/23 to 1/3/24: Vehicle inspected at Mobility Works, technician diagnosed controller board failure and recommended replacement. Told VMI lost supplier for controller board leaving no way to properly restore conversion equipment. On 1/3/24 spoke to VMI technician who confirmed controller board is unavailable. He stated VMI engineering department is trying to develop a workaround for a new controller board. VMI technician also reported two calls a day for this problem, and that it affects their Chrysler conversion equipment as well. 2/7/24: Telephoned VMI technical support. Told workaround for controller board will not be available for months. Told that if quadriplegic becomes trapped in car to call fire department. Told this is an acceptable solution in the mobility industry if back-up fails. Very cavalier, comparing to Ford no longer making fuel pump or fuel hose for his old truck. 4/18/24; 4/25/24: Emailed VMI requesting status of controller board replacement. No response. Conclusion: The controller board failed without warning, causing all conversion equipment to fail, including back-up override, and potentially trapping power wheelchair dependent individuals in their vehicles. VMI has failed to provide parts for repair of its conversion equipment. VMI authorized dealer estimates $1,000 to bypass controller board. This will cause certain accessibility functions to no longer work. The vehicle has been unusable for quadriplegic spouse since December 2023.

ABOUT 1:30 PM, MAY 23, 2015, I WAS DRIVING MY NEW 2015 HONDA ODYSSEY EX ON EAST BOUND OF RT 529 (PLAINFILD AVE) TO RT 1 IN EDISON, NJ, THE LEFT REAR BACK MICHELIN TIRE BLEW OUT ABOUT 100 YARDS AWAY FROM THE INTERSECTION. THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE ROAD. NOTHING WAS FOUND ON THE TIRE. I CALLED INSURANCE COMPANY, TOWING COMPANY, AND FINALLY I FOUND THAT A NISSAN DEALER IN RT 1 WAS JUST 200 YARDS AWAY. I SLOWLY DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, REPLACED THE SPARE TIRE. ON WEDNESDAY, I REPLACED A NEW MICHELIN SAME TIRE IN SWEENEY'S GULF AT EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ. THURSDAY, I WENT TO AUTOSPORT HONDA DEALER AT BRIDGEWATER, NJ WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE LAST OCTOBER. BUT THE DEALER AT FIRST DENIED THE TIRE HAD DEFECT, THEN THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY DIDN'T HANDLE THE TIRE WARRANTY, I HAD TO GO MICHELIN DEALER. ON FRIDAY, MAY 26, I WENT TO A MICHELIN DEALER IN OLD BRIDGE, NJ. THE STAFF TOLD ME THAT I HAD TO CALL MICHELIN TO SEE WHAT I SHOULD DO. I CALLED AND EMAILED MICHELIN. FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTION, I WENT TO STS ON RT 18 TO CHECK. TODD CHECKED THE TIRE AND THE RIM, TOLD ME THAT THE TIRE HIT SOMETHING, WHICH CUT THE TIRE, NOT THE DEFECT BECAUSE HE SAW A SESAME BIG MARK ON THE EDGE OF THE RIM, WHICH CAUSED THE BLOW OUT. BUT HE COULDN'T ANSWER MY QUESTIONS: WHY THE FRONT TIRE WAS FINE? WHY THE TIRE NEAR THE RIM WAS NO ANY DAMAGE, THE BLOWOUT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SIDE OF THE TIRE, 3 INCHES AWAY FROM THE MARK ON THE RIM? WHY THE SHAP OF THE BLOWOUT WAS A IRREGULAR CURVE CRACK, NO STRAIGHT CUTTING EDGE AS HE SAID THAT SOMETHING CUT THE TIRE? I DIDN'T FEEL I HIT ANYTHING. I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING ON THE ROAD. I STAYED THERE FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR BEFORE I TOOK MY CAR TO NISSAN DEALER. 529 IS A BUSY ROAD, AT LEAST HUNDREDS CARS PASSED IN ONE HOUR, NO ONE BLEW OUT. IT OBVIOUS THAT EITHER NOTHING ON THE ROAD, OR SOME TINY THING WHICH SHOULD NOT CAUSE A TIRE BLOWOUT. SO IT IS A DEFECT WHICH CAUSED THE BLOWOUT.
