2022 Honda Odyssey Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The right side airbags deployed without any damage or accident occurring to the vehicle. The safety of the driver and backseat passenger was put at risk because the airbags deployed without any warning and completely disabled the vehicle forcing us to the side of the road and trapping the backseat passenger who was in a wheelchair. The vehicle has been assessed by police and reported there was no damage done to the vehicle. The dealership has evaluated and reported there was no reason the airbags should have deployed. An SRS light would come on frequently. Dealership said it was a wiring issue but no permanent fix was ever made or recommended.

The contact owns a 2022 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while their wife was driving approximately 50 -55 MPH, the front passenger side air bag and the curtain air bag, which were expanded from the front passenger seat to the rear passenger seat, suddenly deployed without impact. The sudden deployment caused the driver to immediately stop the vehicle to avoid a further incident. The contact stated their wife had informed them of a pot hole being in the road; however, they could not confirm if the air bags deployed after driving over the pot hole specifically. The driver pulled to the side of the road, and the local police were contacted. A police report was filed. The contact stated that two children had received injuries, one child received a bruise and swelling to the side of their head, and the other child received bruising and scratches to their arms. The contact's wife received bruising and whiplash from the incident. The other two children in the vehicle at the time of the incident received mild whiplash. Medical attention was needed. The vehicle was towed to a body shop, where a mechanic confirmed that no impact had occurred and was unable to diagnose the cause of failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

All passenger side curtain airbags deployed after going over a pothole, despite no tire/wheel/frame damage to the car according to the Honda dealership. No collision occurred, only going over a pothole. SRS is available for review from dealership. Vehicle has been inspected by dealership and insurance representative. No warning lamps or messages prior to the failure, only after going over the pothole did the car announce 'collision detected' and immediately called Honda roadside assist representative.

While waiting at a traffic light, I began moving as soon as the light turned green. However, I was momentarily blinded by the sun and accidentally hit the curb. The airbag deployed but failed to inflate properly; it just fizzled out and hung limp, like a deflated balloon. Fortunately, I was traveling at less than 5 mph, and no one was injured. However, the situation could have been much worse if the vehicle had been moving at a higher speed.

We keep getting a warning about SRS on dash. I see it’s part of a recall but not for our VIN number.

Tired popped and all side airbags deployed - no collision or accident. No damage to the car except the wheel. Children were in the car and could have been seriously injured from airbags that deployed when there was not a serious reason for them to deploy.

This is a Braun adapted wheelchair vehicle. It has a lowered floor with a protective under floor. When making a slow turn into a parking lot, a curb was brushed. The passenger side airbag deployed. There was no damage except for cosmetic scratch on outside. There were no injuries. The police attended and couldn't see why the bag deployed. It was examined by Honda mechanic who claimed there was structural damage. The Braun mechanic contested this, finding no structural damage just a superficial scrape to the lowered floor plate. Both the doors and the ramp work properly. The ramp would not work properly if the frame was bent but it works fine. There were no warning signs. Our safety is compromised by driving the van without side airbags. There are a number of complaints on Honda forums about others who have had the bags deploy in slow moving impacts with curbs, speed bumps and potholes. This seems to be a problem in these vans.

While approaching an intersection, a 4 door sedan in front of me rapidly applied their brakes to stop for a yellow light. I did not see they had stopped in time, so I rear ended them. The impact was so severe, the engine from my 2022 Odyssey was pushed into the firewall and most likely is totaled. If the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) initiated, it did not occur before I slammed on my brakes. The airbags also did not deploy. The car is undriveable. I was taken to the hospital and was found to have a hand injury from most likely my hand hitting the dash. My neck has whiplash and upper back/sternum is sore. I am being referred to an orthopedic surgeon for further hand evaluation. I am confused why the CMBS didn't react quicker and/or more aggressively as well as why didn't the airbags deploy?

The contact owns a 2022 Honda Odyssey that was modified by the BraunAbility company. The contact stated that after the vehicle was modified with a new floor, suspension, seats, and wiring for a ramp, the airbag warning light illuminated. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for BraunAbility where the failure was diagnosed as an airbag and seat belt sensor failure. The contact stated that he was informed that the BraunAbility company was unable to fix the failure. The manufacturer BraunAbility was contacted but offered no assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 500.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
