2007 Honda Pilot Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I have a 2007 Honda Pilot. While just taking off again from a stoplight, the passenger side, "curtain-side" airbags randomly deployed. The airbag light had been flickering on and off - it would then be on for a few moments, and turn back off, flicker again, and remain off, for about a day and a half, two days prior to this happening. There was no collision. There was no pothole. There was no harsh breaking or takeoff. There was no agitation to the vehicle to demand this deploy. It happened out of nowhere and for no reason. I have called my insurance company to total out the vehicle as the repairs will cost more than the vehicle is worth. I am waiting for a call back, though they were extremely hesitant and said that they most likely will not cover because there was no collision. The Pilot was in perfect working condition prior to this event. I had my 12 year old dog in the backseat at the time, who was laying with his head next to the back passenger door. He hasn't been acting normal since the incident. He's been acting subdued and despondent ever since. He nosed my arm during the seven minute ride back to the house, after the airbags randomly deployed. I didn't want him in the front seat, as I was afraid that the passenger dash airbag would also randomly deploy. I had to put my seat further back and hold my head against the head rest as I was also afraid of the steering wheel airbag randomly deploying before I got home as well. After it happened, I immediately rolled the windows down due to the chemical smell, and stayed in the right lane in case I had to quickly pull over. Which is no way to safely drive. I have not driven it since. Since the passenger side window was covered with an airbag I was "blind" on that side for the rest of the drive home. I stayed in the right hand lane, and luckily the only left turn I had to make was at a light with a left turn signal and light. After the airbag deployed the airbag light remained on for the rest of the ride home.

instrument panel warning light w/driver & air bag is on! Stopped by the Honda Dealer & was told It wasn’t safe for me to drive for if I got into an accident the bag wouldn’t work! I’m [XXX] & drive in traffic to shop! They told me it would be expensive just to check it. I don’t feel I have done anything to cause the problem but would like to be under recall so I could have it fixed! Now I don’t feel safe driving it! Passenger air bag lights continuously on. Took to mechanic, mechanic said it’s most likely a bad sensor or a wiring issue that’s causing the failure. That’s all I could find out without tearing into it any further. He ran all the tests and nothing shows that the sensor is bad. But he said it doesn’t make sense that it’s showing it’s bad. He is leaning towards wiring. Wiring??? I haven’t touched that.

TAKATA RECALL / PROPELLANT WAFERS I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL FROM HONDA IN JUNE, 2016, REGARDING MY 2007 PILOT. I PROMPTLY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, IN JUNE 2016, TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. I WAS NOTIFIED THAT I COULD NOT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND THEY WOULD CALL ME. THAT WAS 9 MONTHS AGO. ACCORDING TO THE RECALL NOTICE, THE DEFINITION OF REASONABLE PERIOD OF TIME IS 60 DAYS. THE NOTICE SAYS HONDA SUGGESTS THAT I AVOID HAVING A PASSENGER SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SEAT. THAT IS NOT A REASONABLE SUGGESTION FOR NEARLY A YEAR AND COUNTING.

I CALLED SOUTH HILLS HONDA, 3663 WASHINGTON RD, MCMURRAY, PA 15317 ON OCTOBER 12TH, 2016 FOR PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG REPLACEMENT AND IT HAS BEEN OVER 2 MONTHS WITH NO CALL BACK INDICATING THIS PART IS AVAILABLE FOR REPLACEMENT. HONDA KNEW THAT THIS PART WOULD NEED REPLACED WHEN THEY REPLACED THE SAME AIR BAG IN THE DRIVERS SIDE. WHEN I HAD DRIVERS SIDE REPLACED SHH MADE WE WAIT UNTIL I THREATENED TO CONTACT HONDA MOTOR COMPANY AS TO MY HAVING TO WAIT FOR TWO PLUS HOURS ON A SCHEDULED 15 MINUTE REPAIR. NOW HONDA AND SHH ARE REQUESTING I KEEP THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNOCCUPIED WHILE I WAIT FOR THIS REPAIR, EXCEPT THEY ARE NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE TO GET THIS DONE IN A TIMELY MANNER. *TR

WE MADE AN APPOINTMENT IN AUGUST WITH THE BOB ROHRMAN HONDA IN LAFAYETTE, IN TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG. AT THAT TIME, THEY TOLD US THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE, BUT THAT THEY WOULD CALL US TO LET US KNOW WHEN IT WAS AND TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE REPAIR. FOUR MONTHS LATER, WE HAD HEARD NOTHING. MY WIFE CALLED TODAY AND DISCOVERED THAT THEY HAD THE PART BUT DID NOT CALL US. HOW COULD SUCH AN IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE BE DISREGARDED BY THE DEALER?
