Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 Honda Pilot, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have a 2007 Honda Pilot. While just taking off again from a stoplight, the passenger side, "curtain-side" airbags randomly deployed. The airbag light had been flickering on and off - it would then be on for a few moments, and turn back off, flicker again, and remain off, for about a day and a half, two days prior to this happening. There was no collision. There was no pothole. There was no harsh breaking or takeoff. There was no agitation to the vehicle to demand this deploy. It happened out of nowhere and for no reason. I have called my insurance company to total out the vehicle as the repairs will cost more than the vehicle is worth. I am waiting for a call back, though they were extremely hesitant and said that they most likely will not cover because there was no collision. The Pilot was in perfect working condition prior to this event. I had my 12 year old dog in the backseat at the time, who was laying with his head next to the back passenger door. He hasn't been acting normal since the incident. He's been acting subdued and despondent ever since. He nosed my arm during the seven minute ride back to the house, after the airbags randomly deployed. I didn't want him in the front seat, as I was afraid that the passenger dash airbag would also randomly deploy. I had to put my seat further back and hold my head against the head rest as I was also afraid of the steering wheel airbag randomly deploying before I got home as well. After it happened, I immediately rolled the windows down due to the chemical smell, and stayed in the right lane in case I had to quickly pull over. Which is no way to safely drive. I have not driven it since. Since the passenger side window was covered with an airbag I was "blind" on that side for the rest of the drive home. I stayed in the right hand lane, and luckily the only left turn I had to make was at a light with a left turn signal and light. After the airbag deployed the airbag light remained on for the rest of the ride home.
My airbags have been recalled. This is an American (MPH on the dashboard) car and Honda Canada said they cannot fix it here. I will have to drive to America to fix it.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Dealer sold me a lemon car with broken and rotten parts on the car. Dealer never stated the car was messed up or needed the major work it needs now. Dealer at one point took the car to go get inspected at a shop located on 705 Jefferson Ave , "and hour later he came back with the car and parked it. Couple days later dealer called me to go get the inspector form form the inspector " Gilbert/Tony". While viewing the paper correctly, the car was never inspected properly. Once I was able to take the car to a shop to do my own inspection they stated to me that I was sold a lemon car and it would be almost thousands to fix the car "more then i had purchase the car. I called the dealer back multiple times and sent msgs to the dealer regarding the vehicle dealer then blocked my number and the mechanics phone I used to call him after he blocked my number. As of now I am trying to figure out a way to get this car fix and filing a complaint report against this dealer to at lease get justices from this dealer and for him to get his business SHUT DOWN due to selling people as in myself broken lemon cars.
Car would not respond during normal operation, was in gear but would not accelerate. After I was pushed to the side of the road, I restarted the engine. And was able to drive a block away to my home at a very reduced speed. It will now only run at a very low speed, therefore inoperable.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
My 2007 Honda Pilot has an electrical problem! If my car sits more than 4 days without being driven or started the battery goes dead! I’ve had it to Honda & they can never find a problem! I bought new batteries & it still is the same. Weather has nothing to do with it. It happens summer & winter. Honda told me something drains the battery but no idea. This has been a problem since being new!
instrument panel warning light w/driver & air bag is on! Stopped by the Honda Dealer & was told It wasn’t safe for me to drive for if I got into an accident the bag wouldn’t work! I’m [XXX] & drive in traffic to shop! They told me it would be expensive just to check it. I don’t feel I have done anything to cause the problem but would like to be under recall so I could have it fixed! Now I don’t feel safe driving it! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA PILOT. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, A BURNING RUBBER ODOR WAS DETECTED ALONG WITH A THUMPING VIBRATION AND NOISE; WHEN BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND NORMALLY BUT THE THUMPING VIBRATION WAS EVEN MORE APPARENT. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE CALIPERS WERE LOCKING UP AND RUINING THE ROTORS; AFTER REPLACEMENT OF CALIPERS AND ROTOR, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED WITH EXTENSIVE OVERHEATING OF THE BRAKES. IT WAS THEN DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST MODULE HAD FAILED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE MECHANIC CONTACTED THE CLOSEST HONDA DEALER (APPROXIMATELY 70MILES AWAY) WHO ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE RAPAIRED BY THE MECHANIC AND NOT DRIVEN TO THE DEALER DUE TO THE LIKELIHOOD OF F ULL BRAKE LOCK UP OR FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000. THE DEALER TESTED THE REPLACED PART (VSA MODULE) AND DETERMINED THAT IT HAD IN FACT FAILED DUE TO AN INTERNAL SHORT. *BF*JB
WHILE WE WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. GOING 55 MPH WHEN THE LIGHTS OF THE RADIO AND THEN THE LIGHTS ON THE CONSOLE BEGAN TO FLICKER THEN THEY STAYED DIM MY VERTICAL WOULD LOSE POWER AND THEN WOULD GET POWER LIME THE GEAR WAS SLIPPING THEN CATCHING. IT WOULD MAKE THE CAR LUNGE FOWARD THEN STOP THEN LUNGE TOWARD AGAIN .THEN THE A/C STARTED TURNING OFF AND ON
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Lamont sold me a lemon vehicle. Lamont managed to get a false inspection form and provided it to me and stated the vehicle has passed inspection. Once vehicle was taken to multiple mechanic shops to find out if its even able to be fixed and as 3 mechanics stated I was sold a lemon car and they are "Unable to fix" the problem. Lamont was contacted on multiple times through calls/text msgs, and voice mails and as of today none of my calls were answered. Lamont then blocked my number and continued to avoid me and the car situation he put me through. I've been trying to reach him every day since the last time he gave me the vehicles documents. I am filing this report to the best of my knowledge with the information he gave me for the vehicle. I would love to get a refund back of all my money spent for this vehicle that was sold to me as a lemon.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
In mid 2023 while driving I excellerated and the driver seat fell backwards and to the right about 5 inches. I pulled over and discovered something under the left hand front side of driver seat had broke. I had a box and other stuff in the trunk and put it in the backseat to prop it up while I drove home. Discilovered a week later the side bracket had broke. And it was a part riveted onto the main seat. I had it welded but didn't trust the weld alone. I started fabrication of a bracket overlay (Honda wanted a fortune for the one part). After months of it being parked over the winter I bought another 2007 Honda Pilot for parts. Sad that Hondas quality has declined. Very dangerous, and the same thing had happened to a lot of other owners. Not something that should happen at any mileage. Ours had about 176k on it.
Driver's seat front left mounting bracket snapped. Seat now rocks backward under pressure or during acceleration, and runs the risk of detaching completely in a collision. Over one hundred reports of similarly compromised driver's seats in Honda Pilot series 2003 - 2007 (mine is a 2007). Available for inspection upon request. Honda needs to issue a safety recall before injuries and fatalities start occurring.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
Both front headlights on low beam suddenly stopped working, high beams work as do the rest of the indicator lights on the vehicle, I have replaced the bulbs, checked fuses and relays and switches and they still do not work. An issue that has been recalled on earlier years and is very common on my model year with no assistance from Honda.
WE WERE TRAVELING THE FREEWAY AND AS WE DROVE DOWN THE ROAD THE LOW BEAMS TURNED OFF. FORTUNATELY HIGH BEAMS WERE STILL FUNCTIONAL.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE RELATIVELY NEW TIRE (29000 MILES DRIVEN) DID BURST ON THE SIDE. THE DISCOUNT TIRE STORE REPRESENTATIVE COULDN'T EXPLAIN WHY? I HAVE PICTURES THAT I CAN SEND YOU. IN ADDITION TO THE BILLS I INCURRED IN THE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT. TOTAL COST $140.30 IN TOTAL. THE DEALER BELIEVES IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2007 HONDA PILOT EQUIPPED WITH TOYO OPEN COUNTRY AT TIRES. THE TIRE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMALLY LOUD NOISE. THE VEHICLE LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED INTO TREES AND THE MEDIAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE BLEW OUT. THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG; DEPLOYED, HOWEVER THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM THE SCENE AND LATER DEEMED DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim

I would love to get a refund back of all my money spent for this vehicle that was sold to me as a lemon.
Rear Subframe rust because of bad quality metal is leading me to call the junk yard, although everything is working fine in the car, still I have to get rid of it because is not safe to drive.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Car would not respond during normal operation, was in gear but would not accelerate. After I was pushed to the side of the road, I restarted the engine. And was able to drive a block away to my home at a very reduced speed. It will now only run at a very low speed, therefore inoperable.
I experienced a sudden unintended acceleration while coming to a full stop at a traffic light. The vehicle kept accelerating around 5k RPM on it's own without pressing the gas pedal. I was able to stop the vehicle by engaging the emergency brake. I was very close to cause an accident today. My mechanic said there's no engine code and can't find anything wrong.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
The 2007 Honda Pilots rear subframe suspension mounting points and the driver side rear sping and shock support rusted away so bad that the driver side wheel collapsed, fortunately it was discovered just in time before there was an major accident, had this happened at full highway speeds it would have been a disaster, this unfortunately seems to be a common problem on the 2003-2008 Honda Pilots according to online forums. Everything else on the Pilot was working great at the time, was quoted $5000 to fix from a local body shop which is way too much so the vehical needed to be sent to the salvage yard at a great financial loss. Like most people I did not think to look under the vehical when I purchased it used in 2022, everything seemed solid, just had a rusty look like a lot of older MN vehicals so it gave a false sence of safety, I feel that the 2003 to 2008 Honda Pilot needs to be recalled or provide a manufacturer buyback and taken off the roads ASAP if they are in any of the salt belt states.
* Rear Frame Corrosion on my 2007 Honda Pilot EX * This is causing instability issues with the potential risk of the subframe uncoupling from the rear frame rail. * No, but a visual inspection clearly shows heavy corrosion. * No warning lamps or messages but the vehicle is showing signs of instability while in drive.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA PILOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR FRAME ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT TWO YEARS PRIOR TO THE RECENT FAILURE, THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW ALSO FAILED IN THE SAME MANNER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
EXTREME SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN I REACH DRIVING SPEEDS OF 68-70 MPH. THE ENTIRE ENGINE APPEARS TO BE SHAKING AS WELL. I'VE HEARD THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH HONDA PILOTS.
SEVERAL MONTHS AGO THE VSA LIGHT BEGAN TO COME ON MOMENTARILY, FOR NO REASON. THIS HAS HAPPENED 50-100 X. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO BE SOMETIMES (DAILY) NOT TRUE (AT ONE OCLOCK), THOUGH THE CAR WAS MOVING STRAIGHT. (TURNING THE WHEEL TURNED THE CAR.) THE ABS BEGAN MOMENTARILY FIRING, FOR NO REASON, AND THE CAR WOULD SLOW, SOMETIMES SEVERELY. (WE WERE NOT BRAKING.) THE CAR WOULD LOSE POWER MOMENTARILY, FOR NO REASON, THOUGH THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN, AND EVERYTHING ELSE WAS NORMAL, WITH NO NOISE (E.G., NO ABS). RECENTLY THE ABOVE HAPPEN EVERY DAY. SOMETIMES THE VSA AND ABS HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME. ALL HAPPENED WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT OR TURNING. WE WERE NOT DRIVING FAST. THERE WERE NO EMERGENCY CONDITIONS. ON DEC 20, WE BEGAN A LEFT TURN AT 5 MPH. THE ABS FIRED FOR 4 OR 5 SECS. THEN THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE (NOT ABS). THE VSA LIGHT CAME ON. THE WHEEL WAS AS MUCH AS 270 DEGREES FROM TRUE. SOMETIMES IT TOOK EFFORT TO TURN THE WHEEL. SOMETIMES IT TOOK NO EFFORT BUT THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND. ON DEC 21, AT THEIR RECOMMENDATION, THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A HONDA DEALER. THE DEALER TOLD US THE 2 STEERING BOLTS WERE SHEARED OFF. THEY DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE. THEY NOTE: THE BOLTS ARE NOT VISIBLE DURING INSPECTIONS. THE STEERING AND SUBFRAME MUST BE REPLACED. THE VSA ETC. ARE PROBABLY FINE BUT WE CANNOT KNOW UNTIL EVERYTHING ELSE IS FIXED. THE DEALER HAS DECLINED TO PUT THIS IN WRITING. THEY SAY THERE IS NOT ANYBODY AT HONDA WITH WHOM WE CAN DISCUSS THIS. WHEN ASKED, THEY KNEW OF NO RELEVANT RECALLS. THERE HAS BEEN NO ACCIDENT OR OTHER DAMAGE TO THE CAR. IT IS KEPT IN OUR GARAGE. WE HAVE MAINTAINED IT (LAST SERVICE WAS SEP 2013). WE ARE FORTUNATE WE DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT. EVEN AFTER THE PROPOSED FIXES, WILL THE CAR BE SAFE? ON THE NHTSA SITE, WE FOUND 2012/2013 RECALLS FOR THE 2005 PILOT FOR THE SAME SUBSYSTEMS AND SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. *TR

RANDOM MISFIRE ON ALL 6 CYLINDERS DESPITE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE (COIL PACK REPLACEMENT AND NEW SPARK PLUGS), VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT; I HAVE ONLY 112K MILES ON THE CAR. THESE ARE PERSISTENT ISSUES ON VEHICLES HONDA J-SERIES ENGINES, YET MY YEAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND SERVICE, PARTS, AND COSTS ASSOCIATED IS NOT COVERED BY THE DEALER WHILE OTHER YEARS ARE. THE MISFIRE ISSUES CONTINUE TO REOCCUR. I HAD A CERTIFIED MECHANIC LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND NOW THE VSA LIGHT COMES ON. I WOULD LIKE THE CAR REPAIRED BY HONDA AND MY WARRANTY AND POWERTRAIN WARRANTY EXTENDED, AS WELL, IF THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT OTHER VEHICLES WERE REPAIRED BY HONDA. Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HONDA PILOT. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV HIGHLY WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. SUDDENLY, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO RESPOND. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE FACTORY CLIP ATTACHED TO THE CLAMP OF THE TRANSMISSION LINE. THERE WAS EXCESSIVE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. THE CLIP SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED BY THE MANUFACTURER AT THE TIME OF THE VEHICLE'S PRODUCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,000.
FOUND TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKING ON FLOOR AND CAN SEE FLUID ON UNDER SIDE OF VEHICLE. TECHNICIAN FOUND LEAK WAS FROM LEFT SIDE OF TRANSMISSION-DUE TO CASTING SPOT IN CASE ALLOWING FLUID TO LEAK. DATE OF FAILURE 12/12/2006. MILEAGE DATE OF FAILURE 572. TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED . *JB

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
WE EXPERIENCED A BURNING ODOR IN THE CAR CAB, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIT AND THE A/C TEMPERATURE ROSE TO THE OUTSIDE AIR LEVEL. WHEN TAKEN TO MY CAR TECH, HE FOUND THAT THERE WAS A FIRE ON THE RIGHT CABIN WIRING HARNESS NEAR WHERE THE HARNESS ENTERS THE CABIN. THIS FIRE BURNT UP ALL THE WIRING FOR SEVERAL FEET AND DISABLED THE A/C, FRONT LIGHTS AND AIR BAG SYSTEMS. IF WE HAD NOT CAUGHT THIS ISSUE WHEN WE DID, THE ENGINE COULD HAVE HAD A FIRE EVEN WHEN NOT DRIVING (I.E. IN THE GARAGE AT NIGHT). OUR REPAIRMAN ALSO REMARKED THAT THE AIRBAGS COULD HAVE DEPLOYED AT ANYTIME WHEN ON THE ROAD. OBVIOUSLY SERIOUS INJURY COULD HAVE OCCURRED! THIS WAS DETERMINED TO BE CAUSED BY A FACTORY DEFECT IN MANUFACTURE. THIS PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BECAUSE THE AREA OF THE ENGINE WHERE THE WIRES PASSED THROUGH HAD ROUGH EDGES RESULTING IN WIRE FATIGUE AND DAMAGE TO THE WIRE HARNESS. *JS
