2018 Honda Ridgeline Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Multiple warning lights appeared and remained illuminated on my dash, all related to safety features (LKAS, ACC, CMBS AND ROAD DEPARTURE). The problem was confirmed by Capitol Honda Service Department. The vehicle was scanned and stored DTC was found at INTEGRATED DRIVER SUPPORT SYSTEM. U3000-49 MULTIPURPOSE CAMERA UNIT INTERNAL ELECTRONIC FAILURE. The DTC was set as hard code, unable to clear. RECOMMEND REPLACING MULTIPURPOSE CAMERA AND PERFORMING CALIBRATION. The estimate I was initially given for the cost of the repair parts and labor was close to $2,000. The repair was necessary because the inoperable safety features directly affects my safety on the road as well as the safety of others. Honda Sensing is a suite of driver-assist safety technologies that use cameras, radar, and sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings, alert the driver to potential hazards, and provide automatic steering and braking assistance to help prevent collisions. Key features include Collision Mitigation Braking, which applies the brakes to avoid or mitigate a crash; Adaptive Cruise Control, which maintains a set distance behind the leading vehicle; and Lane Keeping Assist, which provides subtle steering adjustments to keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

The backup camera intermittently works. When put in reverse, sometimes I’ll have a black screen with grid lines, other times just a blank screen. Yes, it is available for inspection. I cannot see persons and property when backing up. I am afraid, in reverse, of running over persons shorter than the vehicle that only the backup camera would pick up. This has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service station. The vehicle has not been inspected by another entity. There has been no warning lights or messages from the vehicle about the issue. I purchased the vehicle in October 2022 and the issue started two weeks after purchase.

The failed system is the Backup camera and the failure can be inspected. Our safety is compromised because we cannot see objects behind the vehicle before or during backing maneuvers. The damage has been reported and confirmed by the Honda dealer as well as an independent. There was no warning of the failure, one day it worked the next day it did not work.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rear camera wire harness has failed. When vehicle is in reverse the screen displays a black image. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Please see attached image. These wires are visible when the tailgate is open. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The rear camera adds tremendous safety information as I reverse the vehicle. In every situation this information is valuable; more so in a neighborhoods like the one I live in. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No. I will mention it during my next routine service. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, first signs were the camera would fail sporadically , now almost permanently. Sometimes after opening/closing the tailgate the camera will work until the tailgate is opened again.

Backup camera stopped working. Will sometimes work after the tailgate has been opened and closed. Wiring harness from the tailgate to the truck body is frayed and poorly designed for the fold down and swing feature of the tailgate. Poor sightlines on the truck make backing up using the mirrors challenging and stressful.

The back up camera worked for a few months and all of a sudden stopped. I drove it like that for a month or so hoping it would pop back on but it never did. The fuse wasn't blown and the backup lights worked so I assumed it was getting power. Looking online I saw the posts about the cut wires. Mine were not cut where it usually seemed to be by the swing gate hinge, but it was very pinched. After opening it up I discovered one of the wires had in fact been cut via the pinching. Respliced the wire and the camera came right back on.

The backup camera does not work as the wiring harness snapped between the harness's exit from the body and into the tail gate. This is on the left side near the hinges for the tailgate. I reconnected broken wires and camera works again.

The rear view back up mirror stopped working it is intermittent. I believe the problem is a flaw where the wiring harness goes to the mirror near the hinge on the tailgate. Seems to be what was shown on some sites on the internet. spoke to dealer he said he never heard of the problem kinda blew me off. Hope this government agency can get Honda to fix the problem. Backup camera failed at 65k miles. Upon researching issue, found that this is a common problem amongst Ridgeline owners, generally right after the warranty period is over. The indicated cause, according to the research, is broken wires in the wiring harness due to regular use of the tailgate. The Honda dealer confirmed this diagnosis and wanted $600+ to replace the wiring harness. After discussing with them and pointing out the common-ness of this problem, they agreed to cover the cost this one time, but stated that the wiring harness wouldn't be routed any differently, so probability of recurrence of the issue is high. Obviously, I was unable to use the backup camera during this issue, so this is a safety problem.

The backup camera on my 2018 Honda Ridgeline stopped working. I took it into the Honda dealership and they diagnosed it as a broken wiring harness. They will replace it for $833.45. I asked why Honda wasn't fixing this at no cost given the wiring harness should not break. The dealer indicated that they had not heard of this problem. After I returned home, I saw that there is a class action lawsuit.

The back up camera finally stopped working. For a few weeks it would work intermittently, usually the guide lines would be orientated upwards instead of to the rear of the image OR the guide lines would be there but there was no camera image. Now, there is simply a black screen. The wiring harness at the left front of the tailgate has broken. There are exposed wires and a broken plastic spiral wiring loom.

Failure of backup camera wire harness at tail gate hinge area. 2018 Ridgeline at approx 26,000 miles, light duty use. Backup camera became intermittent, then failed. Dealership service said harness has failed, no kidding. Wire harness has sheared in area due to opening tailgate…….this is a two direction tailgate, drop down and swing out. Wire harness wires been sheared, cable protective jacket has been cut due to normal opening operation. As a engineer with many years of experience in medical device manufacturing; this is clearly a defect related to weak construction, poor harness routing and mis-assembly. Overall, a extremely poor design…….leading to premature failure…this should have not been allowed…..…this is a SAFETY ISSUE due to lack of backup camera……there is already a class action law suit in process in the state of California for this very issue. It needs to be fixed by the manufacturer………and all Ridgeline owners made whole, accordingly………
