2013 Hyundai Azera Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2013 Hyundai Azera, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

50 mph dry, clear and straight road, Right Rear control arm broke causing the rear wheel to become detached from the car and causing the car to careen into oncoming lane before correcting and landing in the right-hand ditch. Could have been a disaster and only by grace was this not a disaster for me and an unknown oncoming car. Event was witnessed by people in 2 other cars and they both stopped and gave their names.

Vehicle steering wheel started giving a lag feedback about 9 months to 1 year ago. About 5 weeks ago, started noticing loud metal noise when going over bump with steering wheel being rotated. Did some research to find similar issues on Azera and many Hyundai Sonata and other vehicles where steering wheel rubber coupler were worn out. Later also saw many complains here for this vehicle alone. I found no recall has been giving to the Azera, while it was giving to Sonata and others. Had to take it to a mechanic to replace it, which charged for 4 hours of labor, and <$10 of part. The rubber couple was indeed worn out.

The contact's wife owns a 2013 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was shuddering and then stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Auto Zone, where it was diagnosed and determined that the spark plugs, and ignition coils needed to be replaced. The contact purchased the parts, and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the parts were replaced; however, the vehicle was still shuddering while driving. A mobile independent mechanic recommended that the key fob battery be replaced. The key fob battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the starter had failed. The dealer replaced the starter; however, the failure persisted. The contact became aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic), which the contact related to the failure. The contact advised the dealer to perform the recall repair. The dealer informed the contact that the remedy was not yet available. The contact stated that vehicle remained with the dealer; however, the dealer failed to complete the recall repair once the parts became available, and the dealer towed the vehicle away. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

The Car started to emit Smoke while Driving on highway. All the feature indicate that the issue is purely related to the recall but the Hyndai took in the vehicle and gave me a decision that the engine failure is not related to recall. Said that the recall has been completed.

Vehicle started having overheating issues around August 2024, took it to mechanics to get it looked at and tried various fixes, concluding in a blown head gasket. When I took my car to a third party mechanic to fix the head gasket they found that the head bolts of the cars engine had been pulled out of the threads and said that it was a manufacturing issue. Head gasket was fixed but the car was having the same issues due to the head bolts being loose. I've taken my vehicle to the nearest Hyundai Dealership and told them about the overheating and head bolts being pulled out of the threading. They ran their diagnosis and then charged $1000 for a thermometer change (which our third party mechanic had also done already) and a coolant flush, which did not fix the issue as the car would still overheating after pick up. After taking my vehicle back to the dealership they said it had a blown head gasket claiming over $14,000 dollars for an engine replacement. They failed to acknowledge the issue of head bolts being pulled of their threads which has become a common issue across their 3.3l v6 GDI Lambda II engines, as is documented by many online. The Hyundai 2017 Santa Fe which also uses the 3.3l v6 GDI Lambda II engine is currently getting an extended warranty for engine replacements for all models from 2013-2017. It's strange that Hyundai is only doing extended warranties/recalls for Santa Fe model cars when they have other vehicles, like my 2013 Hyundai Azera, that use the same 3.3l v6 GDI Lambda II engine that will have similar issues. All vehicles that use the 3.3l v6 GDI Lambda II engine should be getting recalled. Hyundai does not seem to want to take responsibility for their faulty engineering on this engine and lazily claim it to be a "blown head gasket" issue when the head bolts being pulled of the threads causes the vehicle to overheat is what is causing the blown head gasket in the first place. They dismiss it as a blown head gasket and don't look any further.

My car started smoking while off and parked after the recall was initiated, and I went through my insurance but they can’t find the problem and I also contacted Hyundai who has never contacted me back. My car is still sitting at Auto Nation Hyundai and nothing has been done. I’m not driving that car with my kids or anyone in it after witnessing that and it’s a symptom of the recall. The car is not about to burn with us in it.

I AM EXPERIENCING A LOUD BANG COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THIS NOISE OCCURS WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS HALF FULL OR LESS WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN GEAR, THE NOISE OCCURS DRIVING FORWARD OR STOPPING AT A LIGHT ON A CITY ROAD. WHEN VEHICLE IS PUT INTO PARK AND SHUT OFF, THE BANG OCCURS AS WELL. THIS ISSUE STARTED OCCURRING ON RARE OCCASIONS IN 2017. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE, BUT THE HYUNDAI DEALER COULD NOT REPLICATE. IN 2018, THE NOISE STARTED OCCURRING ON A CONSISTENT BASIS. WHEN I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THE THIRD TIME, THEY WERE FINALLY ABLE TO DETERMINE WHERE THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM. THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS THE FUEL TANK EXPANDING AND CONTRACTING. THE DEALERSHIP EXPLAINED THAT IT'S LIKE SUCKING THE AIR OUT OF A COKE BOTTLE (CRINKLING NOISE) AND AFTERWARDS PUSHING AIR BACK IN FOR IT TO EXPAND, MAKING A THUMP LIKE NOISE. THE DEALER CLAIMS THERE IS NO SAFETY RISK TO THIS LOUD EXPANDING AND CONTRACTING OF THE GAS TANK AND GAS VAPORS. THE FIX IS TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK BUT AT MY OWN COST SINCE THERE IS NO TSB OR RECALL POSING A SAFETY RISK. I HAVE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND SEVERAL OTHERS WITH THIS SAME EXPERIENCE.

TOOK IT TO DEALER, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE EVENT THROUGH I PROVIDED PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD TO GO AWAY. THIS PROBLEM STARTED ROUGHLY 4 WEEKS AGO AND HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES SINCE.

CAME TO DEALERSHIP TO GET OIL CHANGED & THEY COULD NOT START THE CAR. SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A NEW INHIBITOR SWITCH

NHTSA ID 11339813 · filed Jul 16, 2020

STARTED CAR AFTER SITTING IN PARKING LOT FOR 8 HOURS AND THE TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT STAYED ON. TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE WARNING WOULD NOT CLEAR. DROVE CAR HOME LESS THAN 10 MILES WITH BOTH STEERING AND ACCELERATION CONSIDERABLY AFFECTED. THE CAR PULLED HARD TO THE RIGHT THEN THE LEFT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WAS DIFFICULT TO KEEP IN LANE. ACCELERATION FELT LIKE THE BRAKES WERE BEING APPLIED WHICH MADE THE CAR VERY SLUGGISH TO DRIVE. PARKED THE CAR AT HOME OVERNIGHT AND THE WARNING CLEARED ITSELF THE NEXT DAY. TOOK THE CAR STRAIGHT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO CLAIMED THEY COULD FIND ANY CODES PERTAINING TO THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD TO BRING THE CAR BACK IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. *TR

AFTER MY ABS SYSTEM WAS ACTIVATED AFTER SLIDING STRAIGHT ON SNOW AND ICE ON A SIDE ROAD (MY SPEED WAS LESS THAN 15 MPH PRIOR TO BRAKING), I HEARD A GRINDING NOISE. SHORTLY AFTERWARD, I COULD SMELL BURNT RUBBER. I INVESTIGATED MY FRONT RIGHT TIRE AND NOTICED THAT A HUGE GROOVE WAS SCRAPED INTO THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE (ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE WHEEL). THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN IN TWO PLACES AND WAS TEARING INTO THE BACK SIDE OF MY TIRE. IT ALMOST TORE ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE. IF I HAD KEPT DRIVING IT UNAWARE OF THE DANGER, IT WOULD HAVE CUT MY TIRE IN HALF AND CAUSE ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND I DO A LOT OF INTERSTATE DRIVING.

Driving in passing gear three times my car made a loud thudding noise and with an accompanying jolt, the “impact” feels like you could lose control. This feels like it comes from under the rear such as where the universal joint/drive shaft might be. We’ve taken the car in twice but the dealership is unable to duplicate. TOOK THE CAR TO HARBOR HYUNDAI IN LONG BEACH, CA FOR AN SRS/AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT THAT TURNED ON AND REMAINED ON IN THE VEHICLE'S INSTRUMENT CLUSTER UPON STARTING THE CAR ON 1/13/2019. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND PARKED IN A RESIDENTIAL STREET. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN, AS THE SAFETY RESTRAINING SYSTEMS MAY NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY IN THE CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE WITH ERROR CODES B1490 AND B1763, SYMBOLIZING AN "OCS(OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM) DEFECT" AND "OCS ECU DEFECT" IN THE VEHICLE, WHICH ADVISED REPLACEMENT OF BOTH THE ECU AND THE PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION. THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO DIRECTLY TO RELATE TO HYUNDAI'S "CAMPAIGN 111" RECALL WHICH INVOLVES VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 22, 2012 THROUGH NOVEMBER 23, 2012 (JUST 1 MONTH, 10 DAYS) BEFORE MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT. BECAUSE THE SYMPTOMS IN THIS ISSUE SEEM ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THAT RECALL, THIS ISSUE MIGHT BE THE SAME ISSUE AS STATED IN THE RECALL. UNFORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE'S VIN DOES NOT EXIST WITHIN THAT PREVIOUS RECALL, MEANING A LARGE REPAIR EXPENSE NEEDS TO BE PAID. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, AND A CASE NUMBER WAS MADE FOR THE ISSUE REPORTED. ATTACHED ARE COPIES OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT'S VEHICLE OBD II SCANNER REPORT ALONG WITH THE INVOICE, AN OUTLINE OF THE ERROR CODES SCANNED, AND AN ESTIMATED REPAIR COST.

BOUGHT MY HYUNDAI IN FOR PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR AND WAS TOLD ALL MY COMPLAINTS WERE THE WAY THE CAR WAS BUILT AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE ABOUT IT... FIRST MY TRUNK DOESN'T OPEN ALL THE WAY ANSWER BECAUSE THERE IS NO MOTOR BUILT INTO THE TRUNK FOR IT TO OPEN ON THAT MODEL CAR. SECOND WHEN REAR WINDOW IS OPEN IT SOUNDS LIKE THE CAR IS GOING TO FALL APART VERY LOUDLY AND NOISILY BUT THAT IS NORMAL FOR THE WAY IT IS BUILT.. SUGGESTED BY SERVICEMAN EITHER OPEN FRONT WINDOW SO THE NOISE SHOULD LESSON, BUT DID NOT, THEN KEEP REAR WINDOWS CLOSED AT ALL TIMES. USING TO MUCH GAS THEY TESTED IT AND STATE IT CLOCKS IN AT 33 MPG. YET EVERYWHERE ONLINE IT STATED IT GETS 29 MPG AT THE MOST, SO HOW IS IT GETTING 33? 33 MPG MY CAR DOESN'T EVEN GET 29 MPG ARE YOU KIDDING ME 33 MPG IS WAY THE SALESMAN TOLD ME IT WAS BUT NEVER WAS... UNLESS YOU ARE LOADED WITH MONEY DON'T BUY THIS GAS GUZZLER!!!! OR THIS LOAD VEHICLE UNLESS U KEEP THE WINDOWS CLOSED!! *TR

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE ABOUT 11 A.M. ON SUNDAY, JUNE 19 (OVERCAST, SOME RAIN ON AND OFF, STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, SO I WAS PROBABLY GOING ABOUT 30 OR 35 MPH) WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POP, LIKE SOMEONE POPPING A PAPER LUNCH BAG. DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS SO A COUPLE MINS LATER I HEARD WIND. ALL WINDOWS WERE UP, SO I OPENED THE SHADE COVERING THE PANORAMIC MOON ROOF, AND THAT'S WHEN I SAW THE HUGE HOLE IN THE FRONT PIECE OF GLASS. THIS IS THE ONE THAT MOVES WHEN YOU OPEN IT. THERE WAS NOTHING INSIDE (LIKE A ROCK OR LUG NUT ETC) TO INDICATE SOMETHING HIT IT. THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS DAMAGE TO THE ROOF. I HAD TO PAY A $500 DEDUCTIBLE TO GET IT FIXED, SO IF THIS IS A GLASS DEFECT THEN I SHOULD GET MY MONEY BACK.

I like to report that this vehicle developed moisture inside the head lamps and it has inside a silver/ look like tent foil spread all over. At nigh we can’t see the road. We replaced the light 💡 and bought the most brighter once $109.@ and we still can’t see at night. It is a safety issue since we can see. I’m not the only one you have1000s of customers with the same issues but they have bought the part in Amazon’s. My problem about that is that they do not sale them for my car it said that is for Sonata. And that once you buy it you would have to get a built hule that fits. This is one of the comments on companies: 10:31 5G: 83 ' F FMac8413 V 1 post • Joined 2022 #1 • May 29, 2022 Well I inherited a 2013 Azera. Nothing but light things are useless I can’t see at night and the look bad. Would a 2011 sonata parts fit my 2013 Azera? It would have to be a matter of bolt holes being different because side by side these cars look identical! Anyway any serious input is greatly appreciated.
