Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Passenger side, rear brake line rusted to the point where brakes failed one morning. Brake fluid leaking from rusted brake line. Lost braking pressure while driving. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, independent shop Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No
My son was driving this car home from college mid-day on October 8. He had not driven the car for 10 days or so while at school and he did notice the brakes making an unusual sound that day he had never heard. While on the highway, there was a sudden stop ahead of him. When he pressed the brakes they completely stopped working and he rear-ended the car in from of him. The brakes were completely non-functional after the crash and he had to try to stop his car as best as he could without brakes. Luckily there were no injuries, however complete brake failure out of the blue is obviously enormously dangerous. The tow truck driver confirmed that brakes did not work at all and speculated that a "brake-line snapped". I have no idea if that is true or why he thought that. The car is totaled and no inspection of the car has taken place. We have the car at our house and it is available for inspection as we try to figure out what to do with it. There were no warning lights prior to the issue. Less than a week after the accident we received a Notification of Extended Warranty from the car manufacturer regarding a possible issue related to brakes. And we have read about other braking issues that have evidently arisen over the years with this model year car.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The contact discovered a mileage discrepancy after the purchase of the vehicle. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 121,000. It was later discovered through auto check that the mileage was 199,985.
I was on the freeway and my car suddenly shut off completely.. engine, dashboard, lights EVERYTHING.. it was off for maybe 2 seconds and then the car Powered itself back up the car did not stop abruptly, so I was thankful for that. I didn’t panic or pull the wheel. I just continue straight and then thankfully it cut back on and then I got off the freeway as I was driving down the street not going more than 1015 miles my car cut off on me again it did the same exact thing everything just went off and then it cut back on mid drive and I have a four year-old toddler and I have been scared out of my life. Something is clearly wrong I need help please , no one can tell me what the problem is
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE ISSUE IS THAT THIS VEHICLE LOSSES ACCELERATION AND CANNOT BE OPERATOR CORRECTED WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE
I OWN A 2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS CLEARLY AFFECTED BY THE RECALL ON BRAKE FLUID THAT AFFECTS THE BRAKE MODULE. MY CAR HAS BEEN DEEMED TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE, BUT WAS NEVER INCLUDED IN THE RECALL EFFORTS ACCORDING TO MY SERVICE ADVISOR. I BEING ASKED TO PAY AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT TO REPLACE THE ABS MODULE. MY ADVISOR HAS INFORMED ME THAT MY VIN # IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL EFFORTS. SO, IT APPEARS THAT ALTHOUGH I OWN A 2009 WHICH IS A YEAR THAT IS AFFECTED WITH THIS PROBLEM....MY SAFETY DOES NOT MATTER FOR SOME REASON. MY CAR IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES AND WILL PROBABLY CREATE AN ACCIDENT IF IT IS DRIVEN. MY CAR SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED AND I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS NOT. THE BRAKES CAN BE DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR BOARD AND THE CAR WILL STILL BEGIN TO ROLL FORWARD. IT WILL NOT STOP COMPLETELY! THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR A MONTHS NOW AND THE DEALER IS TELLING ME MY CAR IS NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL! I AM PUTTING TODAY'S DATE, BUT IT HAS BEEN MONTHS NOW AND MY SAFETY SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS WELL BEFORE SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENS.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The contact stated that she noticed that the brake lights would not illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the stop lamp switch needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The dealer stated that the diode wiring system needed to be replaced. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 13V113000 (Exterior Lighting). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,394.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, A FELLOW MOTORIST ALERTED HIM THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT ILLUMINATING. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED TO ALERT HIM OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND SAW THAT THE FUSE WAS NOT BLOWN. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE INOPERABLE UNLESS THE SWITCH WAS SET TO AUTO MODE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT LINKED THE FAILURE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V713000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 138,526.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL REMAINS IN UPPER POSITION AND INTERIOR POSITION, SIMILAR TO BUS STEERING WHEEL. IT CANNOT BE MOVED WITH THE ELECTRICAL POSITIONING BUTTON ON THE STEERING COLUMN AND THEREFORE IS NOT SAFELY DRIVABLE IN THIS POSITION. MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE
ENGINE JUST SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. IT BECOMES DIFFICULT TO STEER AND CONTROL. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO MOVE TO THE SIDE OF THE STREET AND THE CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST RAN INTO ME BECAUSE OF MY LOSS OF POWER. THERE ARE NO WARNING LIGHTS AND THE RADIO, ETC. ALL STAYED ON DURING THIS EVENT. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTART THE ENGINE.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving the vehicle with approximately 113,200 miles on it, as the original owner, the car engine started to operate erratically. then the check engine light came on and then the check oil light came on and, after a short period of driving, the car stalled out and would not start up. This stalling out happened in a left turn lane of a very busy road. Two men in a vehicle that stopped behind me got out and pushed me off of the roadway about a block away from a dealer. The car was manually pushed into the dealership. The mechanic checked and the oil was full. The car is available, in my garage, for inspection upon request. The number 1 cylinder valve spring was broken and the engine jumped the timing on both sides with $2792.53 to $7,086.78 for parts plus labor to repair. At 86,283 miles, while driving in my village the number 3 intake valve spring broke and was repaired. At 51,574 miles, while driving on the interstate, the number 7 exhaust valve spring broke and was repaired. All three times the vehicle operated erratically. The car was in traffic each time this occurred and my safety and the safety of others were put at risk. I have all the receipts from all three breakdowns including the diagnosis. The engine is apart now and I have the parts list and labor costs from the dealership for the work that needs to be done. Initially I was told by the dealer that I needed to have all 32 valve springs and rocker arm assemblies replaced according to a Technical Service Bulletin. When I protested that they did not do that during the previous repairs the dealer said they would only replace the one that was damaged. That is why there are two parts estimates. I have them both. The check engine light came on just after the engine started to operate erratically and the check oil light came on shortly thereafter. I contacted the manufacturer and they said they could do nothing.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the road however, the vehicle failed to restart. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the ECM. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred five additional times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 109,000.
2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS 3.8 4D SEDAN WITH 55000 MILES. LATELY, MY CAR DASH WILL BLINK "P" WHICH IS A NOTIFICATION FOR TRANSMISSION IS ON PARKED EVEN THE SHIFTER IS IN A DIFFERENT MODE. THIS HAPPENS RANDOMLY AND I AM WORRIED HOPE DON'T LOCKUP TRANSMISSION DURING THE HIGH SPEED. I HAVE RECORDED A VIDEO OF THIS SCENARIO IF ASKED. BTW THIS HAPPENS IN BOTH IN MOTION OR IN STATIONARY MODE.

TAKATA RECALL" 4. THE AIRBAG LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF. ATLANTA POLICE STATED I NOT DRIVE THE CAR AND TO REPORT IT. MY FAMILY LIVES COULD BE IN DANGER. NO MECHANIC WANTED TO TOUCH IT. I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO THIS THESE ITEMS REPAIRED, ESPECIALLY THE AIRBAG SIGNAL/LIGHT. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL GO OFF OR NOT BUT I NEED THIS DONE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. I WILL UPLOAD THE PICTURE VIA EMAIL. SYSTEM ISSUES. I PURCHASED A USED 2009 GENESIS SEDAN IN SEPTEMBER OF 2015. WE HAVE NOTICED THAT SEVERAL UNUSUAL ISSUES HAVE SURFACED SINCE THE PURCHASE. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF ANY OF THE RECALLS OR POTENTIAL ISSUES BELOW. 1. THE CONSOLE FOR THE SEATER HEATERS ARE MELTED OR GOT OVERHEATED AND IS DAMAGED. 2. WHEN THE BRAKES NEED UPDATED THEY ARE VERY DRY (PER THE REPAIRMAN) RECALL - 114. 3. WINDOW SHIELD WIPER SEEMS TO HAVE A DEFECT.
WIPER MOTOR SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. NO PRIOR ISSUES, JUST SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. HAVE READ ON INTERNET THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED AND TYPICALLY BLADES WILL OPERATE IF PUT IN LO POSITION BUT IT'S NOT WORKING IN MY INCIDENT! THEY WON'T WORK AT ALL.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
The dash cover on my 2009 Genesis 4-door Sedan has developed large cracks where the passenger side air bag is located. The concern is that this may cause the air bag to deploy inadvertently or increase the chance of flying shrapnel if/when the air bag should deploy during an accident. This problem started around 90,000 miles and has continued to get worse (The vehicle currently has approximately 125,000 miles). I took the vehicle to the dealer when the problem first appeared, but was told it was not a safety concern, and that it was not covered under the warranty. However, I feel this in fact could cause injury to anyone riding in the front passenger seat. 1 picture is attached.
DRIVIERS SEAT MEMORY MODULE KEEPS FAILING AND SEAT WON'T ADJUST. ON OCCASION SEAT PUSHES DRIVER CLOSE TO THE DASH AND WON'T ALLOW TO ADJUST THE SEAT BACK OR FORWARD. REPLACED MEMORY MODULE AND ISSUE RETURNED.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Car randomly turns off while driving. Sometimes my car will go off. Most of the time it turns back on but that is dangerous.
"I WAS SUBJECTED TO A SUDDEN ACCELERATION LAST NIGHT WHILE DRIVING MY 2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS 4.6. I LEFT A FULL STOP AND SIGHTED ANOTHER CAR SPEEDING TOWARD A STOP SIGN COMING FROM MY LEFT. TO AVOID BEING BROADSIDED I SWERVED TO AVOID AND MY ACCELERATOR JAMMED. I SPED ACROSS THE STREET AND INTO A LANDSCAPED AREA. I HIT A TREE AT THAT POINT WHICH BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AND I WAS WEARING A SEAT BELT. I SUSTAINED SOME IMPACT INJURIES THAT APPEAR TO BE OF A MINOR NATURE. A LAKE WAS LOCATED JUST BEYOND THE TREE AND I DELIBERATELY SELECTED THE MEDIUM SIZE TREE AS A TARGET. I WAS FORTUNATE. I SUSTAINED A BACK INJURY SOME YEARS AGO AND DRIVE WITH TWO FEET - ONE FOR THE ACCELERATOR AND ONE FOR THE BRAKE. THERE WAS THEREFORE NO CHANCE THAT MY FOOT SLIPPED FROM ONE PEDAL TO THE OTHER. REF: HYUNDAI GENESIS 4.6 2009. *TR

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, she observed that the front driver’s and front passenger's headrests had deployed without impact. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a complaint was filed. The failure mileage 69,000.
I AM FILING ANOTHER COMPLAINT TO RECORD THIS CRITICAL DESIGN ISSUE BASED ON ALL THE RECENT COVER-UPS BY THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. ON NOV 10TH,2013 MY VEHICLE WAS HIT IN THE REAR WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH BY ANOTHER VEHICLE AT A SPEED SLIGHTLY FASTER THEN MY VEHICLE. WHEN THE VEHICLE HIT US, THE HEADRESTS DEPLOYED MOVING OUR HEADS FORWARD BUT THE SEAT BELTS DID NOT RESTRAIN BOTH THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGER. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED HEAD TRAUMA AS A RESULT. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI MOTORS ABOUT THIS SERIOUS CONDITION AND AFTER MANY LETTERS THEY SAID THAT THE VEHICLE MET ALL THE TEST DATA IN A COLLISION. WHAT THEY DIDN'T SAY IS THAT THERE ISN'T A TEST FOR REAR COLLISIONS REQUIRED BY THE NHTSB. THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN OF THE HEADRESTS AND THE FUNCTION OF THE SEATBELT RESTRAINING CAPABILITY. THIS CAN ONLY BE PROVEN BY EITHER A REAR COLLISION RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH OR CONDUCTING A REAR END COLLISION AT A SLOW SPEED BY BOTH VEHICLES. HYUNDAI DID INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND THE SEATBELTS ( MEASURED THEM ; ONLY INSPECTION THAT COULD BE MADE). DO WE NEED TO SEE ANOTHER DEATH RESULTING IN THE NHTSB AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY AVOIDING TESTING TO SAVE MONEY OR IGNORE A SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR

Front subframe is rotted out. And TPMS light is on.
HAVE 2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS AND HAD A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE CAR PULLING TO THE LEFT AND THEN THE RIGHT. HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP OVER 5 TIMES, MULTIPLE REPAIRS OF ALIGNMENT AND CAN'T CORRECT THE ISSUE. I EVEN HAD 3 INDEPENDENT SHOPS EVALUATE AND THEN CONFIRM ISSUE AND NOW HYUNDAI STATES THEY CAN NO LONGER CONFIRM PROBLEM. THEY WERE SURPRISED WHEN I PRODUCED THE INDEPENDENT OPINIONS. I WILL NOT PLACE MY FAMILY IN THIS VEHICLE. HYUNDAI NEEDS SOME PRESSURE TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE AND THEIR BEHAVIOR HAS BEEN APPALLING. I REALIZED THIS ISSUE THE DAY AFTER I PICKED UP THE CAR AND HYUNDAI HAS BEEN VERY RESISTANT TO HELP BUT I THINK IT IS BECAUSE THEY CAN NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
I BOUGHT MY 2009 GENESIS BRAND NEW IN SEPTEMBER 2009. IN APRIL, 2010, I WAS TOLD I HAD TIRE WEAR AND NEEDED NEW TIRES. TIRES WERE WEARING IN THE SAME PATTERN, CUPPING, ALONG THE EDGE. PLACED MY 5TH SET OF TIRES ON THIS GENESIS IN MARCH 2014 AND THEY ARE NOW CUPPED JUST LIKE THE FOUR SETS PRIOR. TIRES ARE ALWAYS BALANCED. HAVE HAD ALIGNMENT DONE AND CHECKED AGAIN LATER. TIRES HAVE WORN IN THE SAME PATTERN SINCE THE FIRST SET WHEN BRAND NEW. TIRE BRANDS HAVE INCLUDED DUNLOP, BRIDGESTONE, MICHELIN, YOKOHAMA, AND FIRESTONE. TECHNICIANS ARE STUMPED BY THIS FLAW. *TR
ON APRIL 21, 2010, I TOOK MY WIFE'S HYUNDAI GENESIS IN FOR SERVICING. THE PREVIOUS SERVICING WAS DONE AT 8,936 AND THERE WAS NO WEAR PROBLEM INVOLVING ANY OF THE TIRES. THE MILEAGE ON APRIL 21 WAS 13,839; LESS THAN 5,000 ADDITIONAL MILES. AT THIS APPOINTMENT I WAS INFORMED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES NO LONGER MET MINIMUM TREAD STANDARDS FOR SAFE OPERATION. IN FACT, AREAS OF THE TIRES HAD NO TREAD AT ALL AND THE DEALER INVOICE STATED THAT THE "TIRES REQUIRE IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT." EVEN THOUGH I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THIS VEHICLE, I WAS INFORMED THAT HYUNDAI DOES NOT WARRANT THE TIRES ON THE GENESIS. I EXPRESSED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT THEY HAD PUT MY FAMILY'S SAFETY AT RISK -- WITH MY WIFE DRIVING OUR GRANDCHILDREN AROUND TOWN ON LESS THAN A MEASURABLE LEVEL OF TREAD, POSING A DANGEROUS SAFETY SITUATION, WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT WAS OCCURRING TO THE RUBBER. THE DEALERSHIP, THROUGH ITS SALES MANAGER, DID NOT WANT TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUES INVOLVING ITS TIRES. THE RESPONSE WAS "IT'S NOT OUR PROBLEM." I BELIEVE IT IS HYUNDAI'S PROBLEM. AFTER SUBSEQUENTLY CHECKING GENERAL WEBSITES, THE TIRE ISSUE IS ONE THEY ARE AWARE OF. HOWEVER, THEY APPEAR TO BE WAITING UNTIL SOMEONE SUFFERS A LOSS OF CONTROL, A BLOWOUT, OR AN ACCIDENT POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A DEATH BEFORE THEY TAKE ACTION. I BELIEVE HYUNDAI OF AMERICA AND ITS DEALERSHIPS: 1. ARE DECEPTIVE IN THEIR ADVERTISING PRACTICES. 2. KNOWINGLY PLACING A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT ON THEIR GENESIS VEHICLES. 3. ACTIONS ARE FRAUDULENT, SINCE THEY DO NOT DISCLOSE TO CONSUMERS THAT THEY DO NOT WARRANT THE TIRES ON THE GENESIS. 4. SHOULD BE ISSUES A "CEASE AND DESIST ORDER" INVOLVING THESE TIRES ( DUNLOP, SPORT 5000, P235/50R18). AND 5.THE NHTSA FINE HYUNDAI FOR THEIR CIVIL, AND POTENTIALLY CRIMINAL, FRAUDULENT CONDUCT BY KNOWINGLY VIOLATING NATIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS. ADDITIONALLY, I AM MAKING A CLAIM TO HYUNDAI FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF THE $736 I HAD TO PAY FOR NEW TIRES. (I KEPT THE WORN TIRES TO PROVE MY CASE.) *TR

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN STARTING OUT SLOW, LISE AT A STOP LIGHT, IF IT IS NECESSARY TO LIFT OFF THE ACCELERATOR BRIEFLY, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO GO INTO A HIGH GEAR AND THE CAR JUST COASTS WITH NO POWER. BY PRESING THE ACCELERATOR HARD, A JACKRABBIT START RESULTS WHEN THE TRANSMISSION DOES FINALLY SHIFT DOWN. THIS CAN BE VERY SCARY. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER OWNERS AND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS. WHILE PARKED ON A SLIGHT INCLINE WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF, HE EXITED THE VEHICLE. UNEXPECTEDLY, THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARDS IN THE PARKING LOT. THE FRONT PASSENGER WAS ABLE ENTER THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT TO TURN THE ENGINE ON AND PLACE THE GEAR SHIFTER INTO 'PARK". THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR DAMAGES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 15,000. UPDATED 02/23/10. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE TPMS LIGHT ILLUMINATED SPORADICALLY. UPDATED 08/11/10
