What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Hyundai Sonata, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

MY BATTERY LIGHT FLASHES, THEN GOES OFF THEN MY SEATBELT LIGHT BLINKS AND GOES OFF AND MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE NOT GETTING THE POWER TO WIPE AND THE REAR DEFROSTER TURNS OFF EVERY TIME THE BATTERY LIGHT FLASHES. IVE BEEN TO 3 MECHANICS AND THEY ALL SAY BRING IT TO HYUNDAI. WHEN I BROUGHT IT THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL SO I LEFT THE SERVICE ROOM AND AM NOW ON THE NHTSA SITE.ALL OF THIS IS WHILE BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION
THE SUN VISOR ON DRIVER SIDE KEEPS FALLING DOWN AND DOES NOT STAY UP. ITS A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN SUN IS IN MY EYE AND I CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I WOULD HATE AN ACCIDENT WITH SUN IN MY EYE AND GETTING BLINDED.

On 5/30/23 while in traffic I pressed the brake to slow down and the car kept moving forward. I pressed the brake all the way down and I was still unable to stop the car from accelerating. I rear-ended the vehicle in front of me. My car is currently being inspected by a mechanic that my insurance company recommended.
The contact owns a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the accelerator pedal became stuck and was unable to reduce speed while depressing the brake pedal or shifting into neutral. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder and place the vehicle into the park. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
My parking and tail lights do not turn off when I turn off the car when it's dark. I have to turn the headlight switch on and off several times to see if they will turn off. If they do not I have to disconnect the battery so it doesn't discharge. I was told this is a fuse panel issue. If this is a fuse panel issue then I'm concerned what else will go wrong with the fuse panel. If the lights stop working altogether then that will be a problem. I have not taken this vehicle to a dealer due to financial responsibilities. This all started without warning. At about the same time, my ESC turned off and will not come back on. Curious if this is connected.
May 2019: Battery light came on and off for a few minutes. Car sputtered and engine quit. Replaced alternator and battery; problem went away. Feb 2022: Battery light came on and off for a few minutes. Car sputtered and engine quit. Replaced alternator and battery. This time the mechanic noticed that oil was leaking from the front valve cover gasket and was getting into the alternator; thus the most likely source of damage to alternator.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
There is a recall for the rear lower control arms for the 2006 Hyundai sonata getting rusty and not performing. My car was taken in for an alignment and the mechanic said he isn’t able to make the toe match up to be in good driving standards. I tried reaching out to a Hyundai dealership and they checked the VIN and said they couldn’t do anything about it because my car isn’t in a certain part of the United States. If I don’t get this fixed soon the mechanic said my when could fall out of alignment and cause some serious damage to me or someone else.

The vehicle was repaired at the owner's expense; however, the failure reoccurred. The local dealer was not contacted. In addition, the contact stated that several other unknown repairs were made; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact related the failure to an unknown NHTSA Campaign; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.
I am filing this complaint regarding a serious engine issue with my 2006 Hyundai Sonata equipped with a 2.4L GDI engine. My vehicle experienced [engine knocking, stalling, and then seized up indicating complete Engine failure] without warning, posing a potential safety hazard while driving. The issue appears to be identical to the known manufacturing defects that Hyundai has acknowledged in its recall of 2013–2014 Sonata models with the same engine Class Type. Although my vehicle is not currently included in the official recall “ SONATA ENGINE RECALL CAMPAIGN it contains the Theta II MPI Engine which constitutes and Further solidifies proof of the ongoing Manufacturing Defects of Theta Model Engine design and exhibits the same symptoms of sudden engine failure. This raises concerns that the defect may affect a broader range of model years than Hyundai has acknowledged. I urge NHTSA to investigate this issue and determine whether the scope of the current recall should be expanded to include earlier model years such as 2006. The defect creates a significant safety risk to drivers and passengers, and Hyundai should be held accountable for all affected vehicles—not just those produced within a narrow window.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
I WAS DRIVING 25 MILES WHEN THE REAR AXLE BROKE. ACCORDING TO RESEARCH, THIS IS A PART THAT WAS NOT REPLACED IN RECALL IN 2013. I NEED THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE CAR IS NOT MOVING. I ALMOST CRASHED THE CAR WITH ANOTHER ONE. WE WERE MY PREGNANT WIFE AND ME. RECALL 113

From owner reports, verbatim

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim

The suspension is going on a arm due to rust and the bearing which makes my car seem to not.have good.control.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE FUEL LINE HAS RUSTED UNDER THE THE CAR. THIS IS WHERE A BRACKET WAS HOLDING THE LINES TWO FUEL LINES AND TWO BRAKE LINES UP .THIS IS A MAJOR FUEL LOST AND I CONSIDER VERY DANGEROUS.
WHILE DRIVING OUR 2006 I NOTICED AFTER STOPPING AT A STORE AND GOT BACK IN IT WAS HARD TO START. IT FINALLY DID START, THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. AS I WAS DRIVING I NOTICED THE GAS GAUGE HAD MOVED FROM 3/4 OF A TANK TO 1/2. I THOUGHT MAYBE I JUST LOOKED AT IT WRONG. BUT BY THE NEXT STOP LIGHT I WAS DOWN TO 1/4 TANK. BY THIS TIME I WAS CLOSED TO HOME, SO WHEN GOT HOME AND GOT OF THE CAR I NOTICED A TRAIL OF GAS BEHIND ME. I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND GAS WAS POURING DOWN FROM THE GAS TANK ON TOP OF EXHAUST. HOW IT DIDN'T CATCH ON FIRE I HAVE NO IDEA. I FOUND THAT THE GAD LINE FROM THE FUEL PUMP TO THE MAIN GAS LINE HAD RUSTED AND UNDER PRESSURE IT BLEW. THANK GOD WE DINT GIVE THIS CAR TO OUR GRANDDAUGHTER AS WE WERE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY CAR IS NOT STEARIN PROPERLY.
CAR WAS DRAGGING ON GROUND, AFTER STOPPING VEHICLE, DRIVER NOTICED REAR, DRIVER SIDE WHEEL WAS TILTED.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
THIS CAR IS EXHIBITING THE SAME BEHAVIOR AS OTHER SONATA MODELS FROM 2006 THAT HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THE OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS) IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT. THUS WITH THIS ISSUE, NO AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT COULD OCCUR CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. I'M NOT SURE WHY THIS PARTICULAR VIN IS NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL THAT SPANS ALL HYUNDAI SONATAS FROM 2006-2008. THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO A DEALERSHIP AND WAS VERIFIED AS THE PROBLEM THIS CAR IS EXHIBITING AND THIS SHOULD BE PART OF THIS RECALL. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY RECALL THAT SHOULD BE COVERED AND I WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION AS TO WHY THIS WOULD NOT BE PART OF THIS RECALL, WHEN THE CAR IS CLASSIFIED UNDER THE PARAMETERS OF THE RECALL AND IS EXHIBITING THE SIGNS OF THE PROBLEM THE RECALL COVERS. THIS OCCURS WHENEVER YOU TURN ON THE VEHICLE AND THE SENSOR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT MALFUNCTIONS. LUCKILY, THERE HAS BEEN NO ACCIDENT AND THUS NO OPPORTUNITY FOR THE AIRBAG TO FAIL TO DEPLOY, BUT IF IT OCCURS, IT WILL DEFINITELY LEAD TO A HEFTY LAWSUIT.
CODE B1448, TESTING REVEALED THAT THE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR WAS NOT COMMUNICATING. "AIRBAG" LIGHT IS ON, PASSENGER SEATBELT LIGHT FLASHING WHEN NO PASSENGER IS IN IT
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE AT AN INTERSECTION, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS SLOWLY DRIVEN BACK TO THE RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE AND ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT THE GEAR SHIFTER FROM NEUTRAL TO PARK WHICH FAILED TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED. THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND USED A ROCK TO CHOCK THE REAR WHEEL, DISENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE, AND SHIFTED THE VEHICLE INTO PARK. THE BATTERY TERMINALS WERE DISCONNECTED. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO COLUMBUS SQUARE AUTO (61 BLINMAN ST, NEW LONDON, CT 06320, (860)442-1236) WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SHIFTER FUSED FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED FOR HER SAFETY WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 102,000.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE TIRES THAT I AM FILING A COMPLAINT ARE,GENERAL TIRES EXCLAIMS,225/50/ZR17. THESE TIRES WERE PURCHASED FOR MY WIFE'S CAR ON 01/13/2011. HER CAR HAD 29,340 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME THEY WERE INSTALLED BY PARAMUS HYUNDAI ROUTE4 EAST PARAMUS,NJ. HER CAR AT THE PRESENT TIME HAS 47,990 MILES ON IT,WHICH MEANS THAT SHE HAD ONLY DRIVEN HER CAR WITH THESE TIRES FOR 18,650 MILES. I NOTICED THAT THEIR WAS A WEAK SPOT "BUBBLE" ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE RIGHT REAR TIRE. I HAD MY WIFE TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED THE TIRES. THE SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED HER THAT THREE OUT OF THE FOUR TIRES HAD WEAK SPOTS AND BUBBLES ON THE SIDE WALLS OF THE TIRES AND THAT GENERAL TIRES HAD DISCONTINUED THE EXCLAIMS BRAND AND THAT SHE MUST REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES. I THEN NOTIFIED GENERAL TIRES BY EMAIL ON 05/18/2013,AND TOLD THEM OF THE PROBLEM,AND THAT I HAD REGISTERED THE TIRES ON THEIR WEBSITE AND THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE NOTIFIED US OF THE PROBLEM. MY WIFE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR EVEN KILLED DRIVING HER CAR WITH THREE OUT OF THE FOUR TIRES WITH "DEFECTS". THEY INSISTED THAT THE WEAK SPOTS AND BUBBLES ON THE SIDEWALLS WERE CAUSED BY "ROAD HAZARDS" WITHOUT LOOKING AT THEM OR CHECKING THEM. I WOULD AGREE IF THE DEFECTS WERE ONLY TWO TIRES AND BOTH ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR BUT I DO NOT AGREE WHEN IT ENTAILS THREE TIRES. RIGHT FRONT,LEFT FRONT,RIGHT REAR. THE PERSON AT GENERAL TIRE TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO A CONTINENTAL DEALER AND HAVE THEM INSPECT THE TIRES WHICH I DID. THE PERSON THAT LOOKED AT THE TIRES DID NOT PUT THE CAR ON A LIFT HE WALKED OUTSIDE AND LOOKED AT THE TIRES IN A PARKING SPACE. HE SAID THAT HE DID NOT THINK IT WAS A DEFECT BUT A "DESIGN ERROR" THAT CAUSED THE WEAK SPOTS AND BUBBLES AND THATS WHY THE TIRES WERE DISCONTINUED. IF THAT'S THE REASON THEN GENERAL TIRES SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THE TIRES AND NOTIFIED US OF THE PROBLEM. THE D.O.T. NO.S PS403R7,S403RY3S10,S403RY3710, PS403RY, WOULD NOT FIT IN SPACE PROVIDED ON FORM. THANK YOU *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA WHICH HOUSES PIRELLI CINTURATO P3000 TIRES, LINE SIZE P215/60/R16. WHILE DRIVING, HE WOULD HEAR AN ECHOING HOWL FROM THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TIRE SPECIALIST WHERE ROTATION AND BALANCE WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. HE CONTINUED TO HEAR THE NOISE FROM THE TIRE AFTER IT WAS ROTATED AND TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE TIRE SPECIALIST. THE TIRE SPECIALIST ADVISED HIM THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE WITH THE SHOCK ABSORBER ON HIS VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE TIRE MAY HAVE BEEN OUT-OF-ROUND AND/OR FAILING FROM THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRES, WHICH STOPPED THE NOISE ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE OF THE TIRE WAS 26,000 AND THE MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE WAS 78,000. UPDATED 4/26/10 *CN UPDATED 05/06/10
