2015 Hyundai Sonata Interior & seats Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the interior system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Interior & seats reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I own a 2015 Hyundai Sonata and have an issue with dash pad, the passenger side air bag has split at the airbag seam and has traveled to the drivers side. If the passenger airbag deploys, I could see some severe injury to the passenger side occupant when the airbag deploys after the cover detaches from the rest of the dash pad. The lifespan of any safety system component is 15yrs according to NHTSA

The powered driver seat returning from a reclined position can get stuck in the recline position for some unknown reason. The seat motor, electrical wiring system and the switch have all been examined and replaced and yet for some unknown reason it continues to occur. Two different mechanics thought it was the switch for the seat being faulty but its been replaced twice and still this issue can occur where the seat after reclining any amount the seat will remain in that recline position for an extended period of time (multiple days) and can if reclined completely, remain in the full reclined position unable to return in the direction so as to raise it to a normal seated position. The seat switch will only recline but will not return back to the seated position to any degree. All of the other swithces and buttons with the drivers side seat continue to remain operational and work even when the seated position direction does not function. To operate a vehicle in the fully reclined position is dangerous as you have no back support while driving, there is also no whiplash protection or support in the event of a collision. It can also impair the drivers ability to reach the pedals or operate the vehicle properly. It also makes the seat behind the driver unusable. Further adding to the danger the seat has no manual options and therefore is unable to be manually returned to the seated position, thus once it is reclined back it remains stuck in that position until the switch begins to function again or the seat is removed. There are no warning lamps or indicators and the seat continues to properly function in the recline direction. Only upon trying to return to a seated position is there any indication of an issue. This has happened at least 3 times in the past year. Repair shops have examined the electrical wiring and the switch and cant seem to keep it from happening

MY VEHICLE RATTLES AND KNOCKS ALL THE TIME. IT HAS A LITTLE OVER 65000 MILES AND HAS DONE THIS FOR YEARS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD IT SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE THAT. THE CAR HAS NO POWER WHAT SO EVER CLIMBING HILLS AND MY GAS MILEAGE KEEPS GOING DOWN. I HAVE HEARD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM BUT I WANT IT FIXED AS I DONT FEE THIS CAR IS RELIABLE AS IT HAS QUIT RUNNING ONE TIME BEFORE BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONES CAR CUTS OFF AND CAUSES AN ACCIDENT AND SOMEONE GET KILLED. IT DOES THIS ANYTIME YOU GIVE THE CAR THROTTLE. THE SECOND THING IS THE POOR STITCHING IN THE LEATHER SEATS. MY SEATS STARTED COMING APART AT THE SEAMS AND THE DEALER SAYS ITS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT I PURCHASED A FULL 10 YEAR 100000 MILE WARRANTY. THIS IS POOR MATERIALS AND WORKMASHIPL I DRIVE THE CAR ABOUT 14 DAYS A MONTH AND IT SHOULDN'T ALREADY HAVE A COMING APART.

THE SEAT PANEL UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE HAS BROKEN AND SEPARATED FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SEAT DUE TO A SMALL PLASTIC PIECE BRAKING THAT HOLD THE PANEL ON. NOW WHEN I GET OUT OF THE CAR, THE CONTROLS FOR THE SEAT OPERATION PUSH DOWN ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR FRAME AND THE SEAT BEGINS TO RISE UP. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM OTHER THAN WHEN GETTING BACK INTO THE CAR, I HAVE PARTIALLY TORN MY MCL IN MY RIGHT KNEE DUE TO THE SEAT BEING HIGHER THAN EXPECTED AND CAUSED MY RIGHT LEG TO HIT THE STEERING WHEEL AS I ENTERED THE CAR, AND FORCED IT BACK OUT TOWARDS THE OPENED DRIVER SIDE DOOR. THIS WAS DONE IN APRIL OF 2018. HYUNDAI OFFERED ME A CASH SETTLEMENT, BUT THEY DID NOT GUARANTEE ME THAT PART WOULD CONTINUE TO BE REPAIRED - IT HAD ALREADY BEEN REPAIRED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS.

FOR THE SECOND TIME WITHIN TWO YEARS THE DRIVERS SEAT CONTROL PANEL FRAME ONCE AGAIN CAME LOOSE EXPOSING THE ELECTRICAL WIRES. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SET THE SEAT PROPERLY FOR DRIVING. IT MAKES THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE IF THE SEAT IS NOT PROPERLY SET.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE DRIVER'S SIDE POWER SEAT WAS MOVED FORWARD AND FAILED TO STOP WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, THE POWER SEAT STOPPED MOVING FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER DRIVER'S SEAT SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL OTHER TIMES AFTER THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

I WAS ADMITTED INTO THE HOSPITAL, WHERE I HAD SURGERY AND WAS TOLD I HAD A HEMORRHAGIC STROKE. OCTOBER 2015, I HAD 2 MORE STROKES AND SURGERIES. I NEVER HAD A HISTORY OF STROKES, AND WAS WONDERING COULD THIS BE A PART OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE WITH THE CHEMICAL EXPOSURE FROM THE NEW VEHICLE? ANY USEFUL INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATE.

WE PURCHASED A 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA SPORT/L1 ON 26 DEC 2014. MY WIFE REQUIRES AN EXTRA CUSHION TO SIT ON DUE LOWER BACK PROBLEMS. OUR PREVIOUS CAR (2007 CHEVROLET IMPALA) HAS SENSORS UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT THAT CONTROL THE PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. WITH MY WIFE SITTING ON THE EXTRA CUSHION, THE SENSORS CORRECTLY DETERMINED SHE WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND SET THE AIRBAG TO OPERATE IF WE WERE TO BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. NOT REALIZING WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE NEW HYUNDAI SONATA AIRBAG SENSORS, WE DID NOT TAKE THE EXTRA CUSHION ALONG WITH US ON THE TEST DRIVE. THREE DAYS LATER WE DISCOVERED THAT THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR DID NOT RECOGNIZE MY WIFE SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WHILE USING HER EXTRA CUSHION FOR SUPPORT. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WERE UNSUCCESSFUL, AND I FINALLY CONVINCED THE GENERAL MANAGER TO HAVE THE OCS SYSTEM CONNECTED TO THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER AND CHECK THE OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS. THE GENERAL MANAGER AND THE SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT THE SENSORS WERE WORKING PROPERLY, BUT THEY STATED THAT HYUNDAI IS NOW USING A "GEL PACK" IN THE SEAT TO SENSE IF SOMEONE IS SITTING THERE. IN THE OWNERS MANUAL THERE IS A NOTE SAYING THAT A THICK COAT OR EXTRA CUSHION WILL NOT ALLOW THE SENSORS TO OPERATE PROPERLY. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY PROBLEM SINCE ANYONE WEARING A THICK COAT AND SITTING IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OF THE 2015 SONATA WOULD NOT BE PROTECTED BY THE AIRBAG. ALSO, MY WIFE IS NOT THE ONLY PERSON USING AN EXTRA CUSHION FOR SUPPORT WHILE RIDING IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OF A VEHICLE. WE ARE NOW STUCK WITH A NEW CAR THAT IS UNSAFE FOR MY WIFE TO RIDE IN "COMFORTABLY". WE HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH "OTHER" VEHICLES, AND THE EXTRA CUSHION DOES NOT EFFECT THE SENSORS IN THEM.
