2010 Hyundai Tucson Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Hyundai Tucson, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

SINCE I GOT THIS VEHICLE THE GEAR SHIFT GETS STUCK. I HAVE GONE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN THE BACKLIGHT SWITCH. IT IS A BIG HASSLE TRYING TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THE BACKLIGHT SWITCH LAST TWO TO THREE YEARS. I GOT THE RECALL LETTER ABOUT THE BACKLIGHT SWITCH IN 2012, BUT WHY MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT LISTED? THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN CHARGING ME EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE BEEN THERE FOR THIS CONSTANT PROBLEM. I ALMOST GOT KILL BY THE TRAIN BECAUSE OF THIS BACKLIGHT SWITCH PROBLEM. I GOT STUCK A FEET AWAY FROM THE RAIL TRACKS TWO WEEKS AGO, THERE WAS A CAR AT FRONT OF ME AND I COULDN'T MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT TO REVERSE. THE CAR DECIDED TO MOVE AT THE LAST MINUTE AND I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. THE CONTENTION BAR WAS OVER MY WINDSHIELD SO I COULDN'T MOVE FORWARD AND I COULDN'T MOVE BACKWARDS BECAUSE THE GEAR SHIFT WASN'T MOVING. I HAVE BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR FIVE TIMES AND THE LAST TWO TIMES, THEY HAVE KEPT MY CAR THERE, BUT THEY HAVEN'T EVEN TOUCHED IT. THEY HAVEN'T TOLD ME THE REASON WHY, BUT I JUST FOUND IT OUT. IT IS BECAUSE MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT LISTED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. DRIVING A CAR WITH THIS PROBLEM ONCE YOU APPLY THE BRAKES THE GEAR SHIFT WON'T WORK. NEITHER IN CASE YOU HAVE TO PARK OR MAKE A TURN. PICKING UP MY DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL IS A BIG PROBLEM BECAUSE ONCE I PARK, THE GEAR SHIFT DOESN'T MOVE DOWN, SO I HAVE TO TURN IT OFF UP TO THREE TIMES AND WAIT EACH TIME TWO TO THREE MINUTES UNTIL THE ENGINE RESETS ITSELF. DRIVERS BEHIND ME GET SO FRUSTRATED. WOULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME TO LIST MY VIN NUMBER? I AM VERY CONCERNED DRIVING THIS CAR WITH MY FAMILY.

I HEARD A CLUNK UPON TURNING RIGHT, EXITING A PARKING LOT. THE REAR END OF THE CAR STARTED TO SWAY. FEARING A BLOWN TIRE, I PULLED OFF THE ROAD, ONLY TO FIND THE LEFT REAR WHEEL PITCHED AT A RATHER UNHEALTHY ANGLE. AFTER TOWING THE CAR TO MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR CROSS MEMBER WAS RUSTED OUT. APPARENTLY THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON OCCURRENCE IN CERTAIN HYUNDAI MODELS. ALTHOUGH OUT OF WARRANTY, IT SEEMS LIKE HYUNDAI SHOULD BE WILLING TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE OF RUST AND STAND BY THEIR VEHICLES.

My brakes are GRINDING SERIOUSLY and PROHIBITING me to fully stop at times. I’ve had several near misses… I want them fixed now!! My car is no longer safe!!! Still doing it today @ 12:18pm with mileage of 130,605… please help!

On January 26, 2024, at AutoNation, I was requested to bring my 2010 Hyundai Tucson in to replace a part involving my ‘brakes.’ I’m the original owner, since 2021 my brakes would grind at least twice weekly and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to stop! Then, the AntiLock Brake System lights would just pop up out of nowhere and come on, then my brakes would work. So, I was told I needed a new switch. AutoNation never let me explain any of this, they cut me off anytime I tried to explain it. So, last January 2024, the switch was fixed. I’d prefer NOT to go back there again!! It hasn’t been inspected by anyone. NHTSA may inspect it as soon as you would like. Except now, my ABS lights are basically stuck on. This started back again June 2024. No grinding of my brakes now, I just want them fixed properly.

The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving 40-45 MPH, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from underneath the hood and the temperature gauge fluctuated. The vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact stated that upon opening the hood, an unknown engine part was fractured, and several unknown parts had detached and were leaning on the driver's side of the vehicle. The local dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Additionally, the contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. 2010 HYUNDAI TUCSON LTD FWD - APPROX 14,000 MILES. CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WHILE DRIVER WAS PARKING THE CAR. DRIVER'S FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND CAR LURCHED FORWARD, STOPPING ONLY WHEN IT HIT A TREE. BODY WORK BEING DONE NOW AND THEN OFF TO DEALERSHIP FOR ANALYSIS OF BRAKES AND SENSORS. *TT

PURCHASED MY 2010 HYUNDAI TUCSON IN MAY 2010. I HAVE HAD THREE INSTANCES OF TRANSMISSION LOCKUP AT 50 MPH. AS DESCRIBED BY OTHERS IT FEELS LIKE YOU HIT SOMETHING IN THE ROAD. THE CAR LURCHES AND THERE IS A LOUD NOISE. I AM VERY AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR, IT FEELS LIKE I WILL LOSE CONTROL OF IT ONE OF THESE TIMES WHEN IT HAPPENS. THE DEALERSHIP IS CURRENTLY REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION AS PER DIRECTION FROM HYUNDAI TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE. NOT SURE IF THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM OR JUST DELAY IT. THE VEHICLE HAS 8300 MILES, IT STARTED FAILING AROUND 6000 MILES. PERSONALLY, I DON'T WANT THIS VEHICLE BACK AND FEEL THAT AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD TAKE PLACE, THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD. THESE VEHICLES ARE HAVING TRANSMISSION FAILURES BEFORE THE FIRST OIL CHANGE! *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HYUNDAI TUCSON. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE RPM GAUGE INCREASED AND THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO DIFFERENT GEARS WITHOUT BEING PROMPTED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,000.

NHTSA ID 10713173 · filed Apr 27, 2015

ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS THIS VEHICLE EXPERIENCED UNINTENTIONAL ACCELERATION WHILE EITHER BRAKING OR SLOWLY ATTEMPTING TO PARK. DURING EACH INCIDENT THE AUTO ACCELERATED AT HIGH SPEED WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE AUTO FROM PROCEEDING FORWARD EVEN WITH BOTH FEET HEAVILY APPLIED TO THE BRAKES. EACH TIME I WAS LUCKILY ABLE TO MANEUVER TO AVOID HITTING ANY PEDESTRIANS IN MY PATH AND FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO HUMAN INJURIES DURING ANY OF THESE OCCASIONS. HOWEVER, TWO OF THE INCIDENTS DID RESULT IN A COLLISION. THE FIRST WAS A MINOR REAR END CRASH RESULTING FROM THE INABILITY TO STOP THE AUTO WHEN IT UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATED WHILE BRAKING FOR A RED LIGHT. THE LAST INCIDENT RESULTED IN EXPENSIVE AUTO DAMAGE WHEN THE AUTO UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATED WHILE SLOWLY PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT ALONG THE STREET AND CAUSING THE AUTO TO JUMP THE CURB. TO AVOID HITTING PEDESTRIANS WALKING ON THE SIDEWALK OR CRASHING INTO A STOREFRONT, I WAS FORCED TO COLLIDE INTO A TELEPHONE POLE TO STOP THE AUTO RESULTING IN THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF FRONT END DAMAGE. *TR

I WAS JUST DRIVING NORMAL SPEED AND MY AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED ME MY DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG CLOCK SPRING IS FAULTY. THEY ARE SAYING IT ISN'T UNDER MY WARRANTY, WHEN I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2010 I WAS TOLD I HAD A BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY FOR THE FIRST 10 YEARS OR 100,000 MILES WHICHEVER CAME FIRST. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DX TESTING AND THE CLOCK SPRING AND INSTALLATION FOR A PART THAT IS OUT OF MY CONTROL OF BEING FAULTY, THAT ISN'T FAIR AND THE WARRANTY YOU ARE SAYING IS VERY MISLEADING. *TR

AFTER HAVING A SERVICE ON MY 2010 HYUNDAI TUCSON, 2 DAYS LATER THE ESC INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE DBC INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE SHIFTER WAS HARD TO PUT INTO GEAR. TOOK IT IN AND THEY CHANGED THE SHIFTER. ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER THE SAME TWO LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN, ONLY THIS TIME WHEN YOU PRESSED ON THE GAS THE RPM WOULD SHOOT UP BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE, AND THE BRAKES WERE LOCKED. THE CAR WAS TOWED AND THE MAP SENSOR WAS CHANGED. WHEN I WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS FIXED I CAME IN TO TEST DRIVE THE CAR AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I DID NOT TAKE THE CAR. THE NEXT DAY THE CAR WAS GIVEN BACK TO ME AND THE LIGHT WAS OFF. 2 WEEKS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKES NEEDED TO BE BLED, AFTER A FEW DAYS THE CAR WAS GIVEN BACK TO ME. 4 WEEKS LATER THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN, AND THE CAR WAS TOWED, ANOTHER PART WAS CHANGED AGAIN. I KNOW THAT THE SHOP I AM WORKING WITH IS TRYING THEIR BEST TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT THE CAR IS SCARY TO DRIVE. AT ANY TIME THE ESC AND DBC LIGHT WILL COME ON, AND THE BRAKES WILL LOCK, AND WHEN YOU PRESS THE GAS THE RMP WILL SHOOT UP AND THE CAR WON'T MOVE. TWICE NOW THIS HAS HAPPENED TO BE ON A MAIN HIGHWAY AND I DO GOOD TO PULL OVER BEFORE SOMEONE HITS ME. *TR

I PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE ON OCTOBER 3,2014, TWO WEEKS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK IT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER THREE TIMES WITHIN THAT MONTH FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN WHICH EACH TIME THEY WERE ABLE TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE (SO WE THOUGHT). ON DECEMBER 11,2014 A LIL OVER TWO MONTHS LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW ON AGAIN? TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER TODAY FOR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND ALSO TO CHECK FRONT SUSPENSION, THE DRIVE ON THIS VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS FELT VERY UNSTABLE AND UNSAFE TO ME AND WITH IT BEING THE WINTER MONTHS MY SAFETY AS WELL AS OTHERS IS A MUST! VERY UNSATISFIED OWNER OF THE 2010 HYUNDAI TUCSON, HAVE NOT AS OF YET GOTTEN A SECURE OR COMFORTABLE DRIVE OUT OF THIS VEHICLE SINCE PURCHASE, FAR MORE THE WORST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED. *TR
