Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2017 Hyundai Tucson, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The Core Symptoms: "The high-pressure fuel pump is leaking internally. Raw gasoline is flooding into the engine oil crankcase, causing severe fuel dilution. The engine air filter is physically soaked in raw fuel and smells strongly of gasoline." My engine is always extremely hot after I have only went 15 mins away from home. Sometimes takes over two hours to cool down. The Safety Risk: "When attempting to accelerate, the vehicle experiences severe fuel starvation, causing the engine to bog down and act like it is going to stall in the middle of traffic, creating a severe crash hazard. Additionally, there is a loud 'popping' sound/mini-backfire upon turning the vehicle off due to unburnt fuel vapors, presenting a high risk of an underhood engine fire. While traveling on the highway the car began to lose speed rapidly until coming to a complete stop, no warning lights were present prior.

NHTSA ID 11745847 · filed Jun 23, 2026

The vehicle has experienced life-threatening safety defects during operation; shaking, hesitation, and stalling in high-speed traffic. The vehicle unexpectedly stalled/lost power while driving, putting myself and others in direct risk of collision. The Hyundai dealership claimed it needed an Actuator Gasket replacement, Throttle Body replacement, and ECM/TCM update. The vehicle had NO warning lights until after it stalled, then warning lights illuminated briefly. The Hyundai dealership claimed repairs were "completed" 5/8/26; within 72 hours of "completion" the vehicle's symptoms reappeared. The Hyundai Executive Case Manager has made NO efforts to resolve this LIFE-THREATENING SAFETY issue. This has put myself and children in danger and is legally unsafe to drive.

The vehicle has a difficult time turning over when cranking, the RPMs are sticking and the car periodically shuts off at red lights. Several warning lights pop up when it won't crank and then other warnings when the car just completely shuts off at red lights. I drive the interstate in [XXX] daily for work, so with the engine stalling my safety is at risk every time I drive it. Likewise when it won't crank, my safety is at risk. I had two Hyundai recalls updated in my car in 2022, Hyundai Recall 209 which was a connecting rod bearing test and my car passed so they installed the other Hyundai Recall 966 which was software update for the knock sensor detection system to alert the driver of future issues. Those issues are now current. The software is detecting a critical failure which is why the car is shutting off - entering limp mode, or the engine is failing. On April 9th through the 11th, 2026 my vehicle was inspected by a Hyundai dealership, where a technician identified a developing engine concern and advised me to continue driving the vehicle. NHTSA ID 11733137 · filed Apr 22, 2026

Following the knock sensor detection system update, this car has a P1326 code that forces it into limp mode. Occurs during moderate-hard acceleration, e.g. getting on a highway. The car is limited to ≤2000 RPM and ≤ 45 mph, and rapidly decelerates to that speed if necessary. Acceleration is very limited. This occurs roughly every two weeks, despite having a brand new sensor installed by Hyundai. Hyundai has also allegedly performed cleaning on the sensor and related parts. This has been going on since November, when the recall that installed this update was performed.

Left rear passenger door latch failure to open either from inside or outside. This is a mechanical failure of the cables operating the latch. A passenger could not easily exit the vehicle in an emergency situation, also there is no way short of breaking the glass to easily access or if necessary extricate the passenger in an emergency situation. As evidenced from online searches and forums this failure is all too common and has been addressed with a narrow set of vehicles with an extended warranty applied to this failure. This is an issue of safety. There needs to be a recall to upgrade affected vehicles and their door mechanisms.

NHTSA ID 11740708 · filed May 28, 2026

the door latches are no longer opening the doors from the inside of the vehicle. This started with the passenger rear and now is effecting the drivers door. The only way to get out of the vehicle is to crawl over the seat to get to a door that is still operational. No warnings, just doesn't open when you pull on the handle. Will be making an appointment with a local dealer/service dept but given the security concerns this is being reported here as well.

The controls (buttons) on the right side of my steering wheel progressed from slow to respond to completely unresponsive, and then the driver airbag light started coming on. At first it was intermittent, then constant. I didn't expect those two issues to be related but did come to learn it was the clock switch. According to my Hyundai dealer, this is a known issue in several other years/models of Hyundais and they have extended those warranties, "but it hasn't reached the Tucson yet". I was told that either 1 - my airbag wouldn't deploy or 2 - it would deploy randomly when I was driving the vehicle. I spent nearly $1000 in diagnostics and repairs.

The panoramic sunroof glass suddenly shattered while the vehicle was being driven on the interstate, with no visible impact, object strike, or prior damage observed. The component involved is the sunroof glass panel, and it has already been removed and replaced through insurance repairs, so it is not available for inspection (however, pictures are available upon request). The incident created a loud, explosion-like sound and resulted in glass fragments falling into the interior of the vehicle, including onto the driver and the front-seat passenger, causing minor injuries. This also created a significant safety risk due to driver distraction, panic, and the potential for more serious injury while the vehicle was in motion at highway speeds. The issue has not been reproduced or independently duplicated by a dealer or service center; however, it was inspected and documented by the insurance company and repair facility during the claims and repair process, which confirmed that full glass replacement was necessary. The vehicle or component has been inspected by insurance representatives and a repair shop, but it has not been inspected by the manufacturer or law enforcement. There were no warning lamps, dashboard messages, or any prior symptoms indicating a problem before the failure occurred, and the sunroof appeared to fail suddenly and without any advance indication while the vehicle was in motion.

Subject: Formal Safety Complaint Regarding Steering Failure – 2017 Hyundai Tucson To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint to request that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigate a potentially serious safety defect involving the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system in my 2017 Hyundai Tucson. I am the second owner of this vehicle. The vehicle currently has approximately 61,000 miles and remains within Hyundai's 10-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Warranty period applicable to subsequent owners. Approximately two years ago, the vehicle's engine was replaced under a Hyundai safety recall. Recently, I began experiencing intermittent steering problems in which the steering wheel becomes extremely difficult to turn and appears to momentarily jam or lock while driving. This condition significantly affects vehicle control and creates a serious safety hazard, particularly during turns, lane changes, or emergency maneuvers. I brought the vehicle to Advantage Hyundai in [XXX] for diagnosis. The dealership determined that the vehicle had a Motor Position Sensor Error (Diagnostic Trouble Code C2401) within the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system. The dealership informed me that the repair is not covered under the vehicle's warranty and declined to repair it. The dealer also submitted a request to Hyundai for goodwill assistance (Prior Authorization No. XXX), but Hyundai denied that request. I subsequently contacted Hyundai National Consumer Affairs (Case No. XXX) seeking assistance. Unfortunately, Hyundai also denied my request despite the relatively low mileage and the serious safety implications of the steering malfunction. My concern extends beyond the cost of repair. A malfunction in the electronic power steering system that causes steering to bind, jam, or become difficult to control presents a significant risk of a crash, injury, or loss of life. Steering is one of the most critical safety INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C.

Have been driving the vehicle for nearly a year but while driving my motor blew exhausting blue all black smoke and then when I turn the car off the car was completely dead when I was getting it towed it could not be told because both of the front wheels had locked and no matter if I put the vehicle in neutral the car will not move come to find out that the bearing ride has shot a hole through the motor block. Took the vehicle to two different Hyundai dealership was told the same thing that no one would take the vehicle or trade it in for an the value for another vehicle that I was stuck with the vehicle and had to pay for the damages which was about 12 Grand also vehicle has been down in my driveway for the last year now cuz Hyundai refused to pay it without $190 diagnostic fee again on top of 12 Grand to replace my motor and the vehicle is not even worth all that money when I don't have much left to pay on it even though I only had the vehicle for only 2 years now but only driven it for only one. Lastly I've also read where there was a recall on these vehicles for the the baron rod and the engine malfunction as well as a new system being put into this these vehicles I was not aware of these recalls because it purchase of this vehicle was right when the recall window had closed and I ended up having a problem now they won't do anything about it can someone please do something about this vehicle.

Seat belt is coming a part driver side burning oil to the point needs a new catalytic converter

NHTSA ID 11677653 · filed Jul 31, 2025

Drivers seat, seat belt at the lap tightens while driving to the point it is brusing hip bones. Even if someone loosens it, the seat belt automatically tightens up to the point it is dangerous in a collision because it can cause internal injuries or more severe injuries. The seat belt design is flawed in that it pulls extra belt from only from the top, so the bottom of the lap belt is fixed and that part is getting too tight and cannot be consistently comfortable or loose enough that it does not bruise or cause injuries to hips and laps. The issue has been ongoing and a major concern. I have contacted Hyundai who said it may or may not be under warranty but expected for me to pay for a visit to the shop to find out when this is a safety issue. Secondly the headlight system keeps failing. What I mean is the left driveres low beam/regular headlight continually burns out despite replacement with new bulbs. The passenger side lo beam/ regular headlight burned out recently and when replaced with the correct light bulb the regular setting for headlights no longer adequately lights the road despite bulbs being installed correctly and exactly as instructed. The lights now face down and are very low. We have changed out the bulbs with different brands and have found the same issue so it has to be an issue with the headlights themselves.

225/60R17 99H Hankook all 4 tires are splitting in between the tread

NHTSA ID 11488951 · filed Oct 12, 2022

I was driving on the Kansas turnpike at around 75 miles per hour. The tire started making a noise similar to driving on rough pavement. I pulled onto an exit ramp to check the tires. I saw a hole about 1/4” long in the sidewall and watched as the tire deflated. The tire was very hot to the touch and smoke came from the hole. I was in a unsafe area so slowly drove a few yards up the ramp where I could pull out of traffic. The tire tread had completely come off the tire and looked like it had been cut off the wheel with a knife. If the tire had come apart while traveling at a high speed, I believe I would had had a wreck. I have no idea why the tire came apart, the roads were dry and the temperature was 90 degrees F. I hit no pot hole and the was no visible puncture or nail in the tire. The tire was one of four I purchased as a set. Now my wife is afraid to drive her vehicle worried that one of the other tires may also fall apart.

Very often the transmission does not kick in when the accelerator is pushed and gas is applied. I.e when crossing an intersection, when passing, when moving forward from a complete stop, when changing lanes, and when on busy freeways. This has been reported to Dealer many times beginning in 2017. This has occurred when I have had passengers in vehicle as well as when other drivers have been behind the wheel. I again reported incidents in September of 2023 but could not get an appt with dealer scheduled until November 6, 2023. Since most recent report to dealer, I have experienced at least 4 more incidents that could very well have been life threatening.

NHTSA ID 11549987 · filed Oct 14, 2023

There is a problem with the dual clutch transmission on this 2017 Hyundai Tucson. There was a class action suit filed 2016 for transmission defects including the hesitation and shuddering issue and also grinding noises. I purchased this vehicle in 2020 with only 6600 (yes, hundred) miles not knowing of any problem or issues. 2023 in Tucson AZ when the weather started getting very warm end May, June I started noticing a bit of hesitation, sometimes like a grinding noise. This was not happening all of the time but from the reviews it happens when it gets warm. The shaking or shuddering as they call it and hesitation is very prominent and continuous now. When I had my car in for oil change in Tucson at the Hyundai dealer the service manager even drove it and said it was the dual clutch transmission. I asked about replacing the transmission then and he said that I did not have a warranty. That was another issue as I was told by Hyundai corporate before buying the vehicle that the 100,000 warranty would transfer to me. I found out in July it did not. I opened a case with Hyundai service who contacted Eastside Hyundai and I even got a call from the svc mngr who drove the vehicle. He said that Hyundai would not end up covering it all even if they said they would, they may have to have car for awhile and I would need a rental, and anything else negative about the situation. That manager never called back so caseworker called another dealer numerous times and said that they could check out my car in November. This vehicle is getting worse and possibly a danger. Hyndai take is November, take it or leave it and thats all they can do. This can cause long term damage to the engine and other parts. I need some help with this if possible before resulting in litigation. Are you able to advise on this issue and if you have even heard about. No accident has occured with this vehicle YET. I have approximately 21,000 mile on my vehicle now.
