Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Emergency Brake applied while driving. Had been driving with vehicle in front, on each side and one at rear with issues and all of sudden the emergency brake was applied causing the vehicle in back to get very close to my car. This is has happened multiple times and reported to dealership multiple times. This was the second occurence on this day.

2023 Hyundai Tuscon XRT has a dangerous and alarming issue. The Emergency Braking engages at highway speeds where no risk is present. The car groans and pulls dangerously. In addition, the Forward Collision Warning engages on surface streets every 10-15 seconds and there are no risks present. The emergency braking issue has occurred on several occasions. The Forward Collision Warning issue occurs every time the car is driven.

I am writing regarding a serious vehicle safety issue involving my 2023 Hyundai Tucson Limited purchased from on [XXX] with approximately 61,000 miles. About one month after purchase, during a drive from Pennsylvania to Florida in October 2025, the vehicle experienced multiple dangerous steering and collision-assist malfunctions in clear highway conditions. The first incident occurred in Virginia while adaptive cruise control and steering assist were active at approximately 70 mph. Within seconds, the steering wheel aggressively turned left and right, causing the vehicle to tip and nearly roll until the driver manually regained control. Later during the same trip, while making a normal lane change with the right turn signal activated, the vehicle falsely detected a collision despite no vehicle being present. The vehicle then veered left toward traffic and unexpectedly slammed on the brakes. Following these incidents, all assist sensors and automated driving features were manually disabled for safety reasons. However, the vehicle has continued intermittently triggering false collision warnings and emergency braking events with no vehicles present, creating additional near-accident situations involving surrounding traffic. I recently had the vehicle inspected by Hyundai after initially believing this may only be a calibration issue. Due to financial and scheduling limitations, I delayed service until this month, but I now understand this issue is far more serious and systemic. Two separate mechanics have advised me the vehicle has major safety-system malfunctions making it unsafe to drive. There are no reported accidents or braking issues on Carfax. I am also concerned this appears to be a widespread issue affecting this vehicle model, yet I received no notification regarding related safety concerns or recalls until conducting my own research. One mechanic stated“I’m surprised this car hasn’t killed you yet. I wouldn’t put my own kids in this vehicle." INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

At dusk I was driving below the speed limit (40 MPH). I was at least 3 car lengths behind the vehicle in front of me when i saw the driver was braking because his brake lights came on and there was an intersection ahead with a stop light. There were at least two cars ahead of the vehicler I was behind. I braked but the car kept on going and appeared to accelerate. I was unable to stop the car with the brakes and collided with the car ahead. It was a sturdy vehicle with a strong bumper so I did not do much damage, if any, to the vehicle but my car requires $6,645.90 of repairs. No one was hurt and the air bags did not deploy. I was wearing my seat belt. There was no warning from ny vehicle that I was getting too close to the vehicle ahead and my car made no attempt to brake automatically. It was as though all warning indicators were not functioning. I have had two other incidents of the car surging ahead but did not report it because no one else was involved and I was able to correct the speed and I thought it was just my imagination.

As I was pulling into a parking space in a parking garage, the vehicle's engine revved, tires squealed and then the vehicle propelled forward on its own, without my foot being on the accelerator. The vehicle only stopped when it hit a support column and the wall of the parking structure. There was extensive damage to my vehicle and to the parking structure wall. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk due to the car accelerating on its own. The problem has not been confirmed or reproduced by the dealer, but we did take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and they said they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle that would have caused the unintended acceleration. The vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer, the insurance company and an investigator for Hyundai. Hyundai infomed us that they are not taking any responsibility for anything that occurred and that they will not share their investigator's report with us. There were no warming lamps or messages related to the problem prior to the failure. However, there have been other occasions while driving on the open road when the engine has revved on its own and I told Hyundai about that. In doing our own research, we have found that there are other 2023 Hyundai Tucson drivers who have had this exact same problem (unintended acceleration causing a crash) while pulling into parking spaces. Additionally, the air bags did not deploy during the collision and therefore the incident was not recorded by the EDR.

Major problems with this cars electrical and computer systems. Six warning lights would begin to flash in succession. Eventually car would be inoperative leaving us stranded in July 2025 in Cumberland MD then after supposed repair we were again stranded in Providence RI on Nov 20, 2025 and car has been there for repair ever since. No completion date has yet been given. I strongly believe there are major safety problems with this car.

I was backing out of my driveway, which is on a busy street. I waited for the traffic to clear. I backed out onto the main road, which I thought was completely clear, but a car came behind me and I smacked right into him. There was no beeping from my car, and the automatic braking system did not engage at all. The rear of my car, particularly the driver's side, was severely damaged. The other car's passenger front door was badly damaged. The side curtain airbag on their car deployed and their vehicle (Volvo station wagon) was not driveable. The emergency braking system frequently engages unexpectedly when I back out of my driveway, even when there is no hazard. The unexpected braking is oftentimes dangerous. However, this time, when I needed it, it did not engage. An outside diagnostic inspection was done on the vehicle, and showed "no event." If you saw the cars involved in the accident, it is clear there was a significant "event."

My 2023 Hyundai Tuscon has 36000 miles. Started running rough with a slight noise. First noticed on Wed [XXX]. On Thursday [XXX] I went to start my car and it stalled. Finally after letting it sit a few minutes it started but only to have the SGI light flash yellow and stay yellow for the remainder of the drive. That day I made an appt at my local Hyundai Dealership in Brandon Florida. They kept my car. Fast forward, Monday September 15th I was notified that the car had lost a significant amount of oil. Car was inspected and free of any leaks. Tech stated because of the low oil & oil pressure the battery life was significantly impacted. I would need an oil change & new battery. Upon arriving back I came across an article stating that excessive oil consumption is common among these vehicles and the dealer wasn't even going to notify me of this issue. They were not honest and I want to file a formal complaint knowing that this is well known issue. I feel unsafe driving my children around and am upset that a recall has not been issued to fix this. For the second time in a year, I was pulling into a parking space and when I applied the brake, the car accelerated, seemed to be airborne and lurched forward. Though I firmly had my foot on the break, it would not stop until it hit a brick post about three feet away. This exact same scenario happened in July of last year. Then, I hit a stand of shrubs. Someone said, your foot must have slipped off the break and hit the accelerator. I said, “I don’t think so.” Yet, I took the blame for the accident, for I could not believe it was a car malfunction, nothing close to this had happened to me since I owned the car. Everything was the same in the last crash as in the first. This time, as soon as the car accelerated, I checked, and my foot was firmly on the break. There is definitely a malfunction in the car. The black.box Should be recovered and read by someone not associated with Hyundai. I checked on Hyundai Tucson Owners’ group on Facebook, and my incident has been reported by others.

2023 Hyundai Tucson with just over 14,000 miles failed to accelerate. After completing a right turn the vehicle seemed like it went into neutral. A green warning light appeared stating limit 20 mph. I now know this is “limp mode”. Turning the vehicle off and back on seemed to resolve the issue. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. They found nothing wrong. I was told to take a picture of the warning next time. I was fortunate to not have caused an accident. This is incredibly dangerous.

I was driving on a highway at 75 mph, on a clear day, with perfect visibility and driving conditions and my automatic emergency braking engaged. I was on cruise control with no one in front of me for approximately half a mile. There were cars behind me, so I had to swerve into another lane to avoid being rear ended. There was a sequence of beeps. If there were warning lights or messages, I was too busy dodging to see them. There may have been a squiggly line that came up, but I am unsure.

Attempted to make right turn onto busy road. Tried to accelerate to move with the traffic, when the car would not go any faster then 20MPH. Could hear cars braking behind me. Pulled over to the side. Message appeared on speedometer, " Limit 20MPH" with green Speedometer. Shut the car off tried to find problem in the manual. Didnt find anything. Turned car back on, it ran normal. Took it to Hyundai, Fort Myers, Appointment, on 08/28/24. They diagnosed it as : "driver assist speed setting was turned on inside settings. Turned off setting, performed a DTC code scanning with no dtcs in any system. Attached stui photos, performed a 2 mile test drive with no further issues". I can only hope that the problem is solved. I do not recall turning on anything like, and wouldn't know how to, but I guess it is possible. Wanted to notify the NHTSA, in case there are other owners experiencing the same issue. 2023 Tuscon Limited Gas - Multiple instances on Vehicle Forward collision warning system activating with alarms noted but no activation of emergency braking while sitting at stop light with cars in front and back that are not moving. Radio system going to show surround view and in some cases only front view even though at stop light. Biggest issue this weekend while taking a curve while merging onto another freeway the emergency braking system activated for no reason. First time occurrence. No one beside me or in front of me for some distance but did have someone behind me. It was a quick activation of the brakes and then release, I would say 1-2 second engagement. If had been longer and brought me to stop would of been an accident. I am taking the car to Westlake Hyundai to investigate this week and will report. Also having dealer investigate premature driver seat excessive wear. Car has 15.5K miles on it. I am concerned as this car is exhibiting same issues that my wife's 2018 Tuscon had that ended-up being successfully lemon lawed. I am also seeing way to many similar complaints and Hyundai needs to figure out what is going on with their emergency front collision sensing system and issue a fix or recall.

The contact owned a 2023 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while his mother was driving at an undisclosed speed, she heard an abnormal sound emanating from an unknown location of the vehicle, after which the vehicle began to accelerate on its own. The driver attempted to stop the vehicle, but the brake pedal pulsated and failed to slow the vehicle, resulting in the driver briefly losing control of the vehicle and only coming to a complete stop after colliding with a utility pole. Both the driver and passenger side air bags deployed. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The driver and passenger were both transported to an area hospital by EMT and treated for injuries to the chest sustained from the air bags. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 10,000.

While driving 35mph on a 3-lane street in the far left lane, a driver of a Ford F-150 was in the center lane about two car lengths ahead, decided to make a right turn onto a residential street (as if he were driving a semi). As I got closer, the forward collision warning suddenly alerted and immediately initiated emergency braking system causing all 3 passengers to be thrown forward. I hit the steering wheel before seat belt caught me. I was not even within distance and he was turning in opposite direction of my lane. There also seems to be sensitivity issues with lane keeping feature as in Phoenix, there are never ending freeway construction with make-shift lanes not always marked well. On several occasions the steering wheel was jerked out of my hands because it couldn’t detect the lanes any longer. It has caused me to avoid freeways all together and has made me miss the exit off the freeway twice now. I thought this feature only activated during active cruise control, but apparently it does it regardless. Now I’m beginning to have problems with display going out at the worst times. I will be taking my Tucson to a dealer to have them deactivate both systems & advise of display. I shouldn’t have to pay for this. I’ll take over the driving, thank you very much!

The car suddenly and unintentionally accelerated. To avoid going through the back of my garage, I turned slightly and hit the frame of the garage. It continued to accelerate for a few seconds until I managed to stop it. I then backed up. Again, the car suddenly unintentionally accelerated. I managed to stop it. I slowly drove it into the garage. I left it in the garage until having it towed to Planet Hyundai. I did not want to drive it in case it accelerated on the drive to Planet Hyundai. I was driving about 5 mph when I hit the frame of the garage. The car continued to accelerate. Automatic Emergency breaking and Forward collision warning. The vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer. The inspector or the dealer could not reproduce the problem. The vehicle can be inspected. The vehicle has been parked at Planet Hyundai from 1/29/2024 to 4/15/2024 I reported the incident to Hyundai USA.I have not received any inspection reports.

When pulling out of my driveway onto street, I lost acceleration. My vehicle would not go oer 35 mph and the RPMs were revving up too 5000 without speed moving. I tried changing the drive mode to fix it, that did not help. I pulled over,s topped the car and restarted and all seemed normal. This has happened 2 other times since I bought the car. The other 2 times was while i was on the interstate the engine stopped engaging and i could not accelerate. Both times the issue corrected itself by the time I could get safely out of traffic. This is a major accident concern as there is no warning before this happens.
