What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Hyundai Veracruz, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Veracruz. The vehicle The contact stated that while driving, The approximate failure mileage was 202,427. The oil light illuminated, looked and there was no oil. The vehicle knocked. the vehicle stalled.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Veracruz. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking oil, and over time, there was a loud knocking sound coming from the vehicle, with a significant amount of oil leaking from the vehicle, resulting in engine damage. The vehicle became inoperable. The vehicle was first taken to an independent mechanic, where the oil leak was discovered; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was later taken to a dealer, where the oil leak and engine damage were confirmed; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V705000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); and the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall; however, the failure occurred. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
This is referring to NHTSA recall 20V705000 a/k/a Hyundai TSB: 21-01047H-2 whereas my 2008 Hyundai Veracruz was brought into a Hyundai dealership regarding the above mentioned safety recall. Dealer refused to remedy the recall without first purchasing an otherwise irrelevant part to the remedy. The TSB clearly states all parts and labor necessary to honoring the safety recall would be granted to the consumer. This refusal to honor a recall poses a safety hazard as this vehicle is my sole form of transportation.
Bought my Veracruz in 2018. After not even a year I started experiencing problems with the charging system. Car would die overnight. Replaced a battery with the new one 3 weeks later same thing happened. Changed many sensors checked the fuses looked for parasitic draw... battery cables. Removed the alternator had it checked at advance auto it was surprisingly good. It was covered with oil leaking out of valve cover.. replaced the valve cover seal but the problem still remains. That leakage messed up my charging system. I cannot even drive the car safely anymore because the voltage keeps dropping rapidly. Even tho alternator is good it's not charging the battery while car is running. P0346 is the code I'm getting when I scan the vehicle. Check engine and TPMS are on. I won't even be able to pass emissions test next month due to this mess.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Veracruz. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brakes seized in the middle of the highway. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact's wife and a nearby driver were able to guide the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway. The contact's wife raised the hood, and the contact became aware that smoke was coming from the ABS module accompanied by electrical sparks. The contact’s wife turned the vehicle off. The contact noticed that the aluminum ABS module casing was burned. The contact disconnected the battery and the ABS fuse, which stopped the smoke and the electrical sparks. The vehicle was then driven to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
ABS Anti-Lock Brake System Failure (ABS Control Unit) As seen in NHTSA CAMPAIGN [XXX], for newer year models, The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. This recall should also include 2008-2010 Hyundai Veracruz's as the ABS Module is the same part number and can leak brake fluid. This can lead to serious injury or death as the car may not function as intended or catch on fire. I noticed a strong burning smell similar to burning toast when the car was dropped off at the shop. My Mechanics noticed my ABS Control Unit had liquid coming out of the poorly sealed module, and told me to report this to the NTSHA. The unit had to be replaced for about $3800. The first symptom is the ESC Light flashing while driving. Others include the AWD Light, Brake Light, ABS Light, and, Traction Control Lights. On many forums like the link shown below other people have experienced this issue on the 2008 Hyundai Veracruz as well. This indicate that the recall should be pushed to ALL Veracruz models. Hyundai should be responsible for the safety of all Veracruz owners just not a few. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE ALTERNATOR WENT, SOMETHING IN DRIVESHAFT BROKE, CAUSING VEHICLE TO GO RIGHT ON ITS OWN INTO TELEPHONE POLE, SIR BAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. RECALLS ARE OUT ON THESE ISSUES BUT NO ONE HAS COVERED VEHICLE LOSS AND LOAN.
THE ESC LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF WHEN I AM DRIVING. IN ADDITION, THE SAFETY SEAT BELT LIGHT IS ON. I FEEL THESE ARE TIED TO TEH RECALL ON THIS MADE AND MODEL, HOWEVER, WHEN THE DEALER RUNS MY VIN, IT IS NOT ON THE LIST. I FEEL THIS IS IN ERROR ESPECIALLY WHEN I READ THE SAFETY RECALL INFO ON RECALL #13V113000, 09V122000, AND 11V472000. I AM NOT SURE WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE LIST WHEN THE VIN IS RUN AGAINST THE DATABASE SINCE THE DESCRIPTION AND SYMPTOMS ARE DESCRIBED IN THESE KNOWN RECALLS. HOW DO I GET MY VIN PROPERLY INCLUDED IN THESE RECALLS. THE DEALER REFUSES TO WORK ON IT AS PART OF THE RECALL UNLESS IT IS IN THE DATABASE. THESE ARE SAFETY ISSUES.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2008 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING ON A MOUNTAIN PASS ROAD, A DEER JUMPED IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE CONTACT TO SWERVE. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN OF ALL THE EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE DUE TO HIM LOSING CONSCIOUS AFTER THE CRASH REPEATEDLY DUE TO THE IMPACT. THE VEHICLE CRASHED THROUGH A SIGN, WENT 300 YARDS DOWN A PASS, CRASHED INTO TREES AS THE IT WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN BASED ON A REPORT OF THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS FOUND THE NEXT DAY BY ANOTHER DRIVER. THE CONTACT WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE VEHICLE BUT DID NOT GO INITIALLY TO THE HOSPITAL. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A CONCUSSION, FRACTURED RIBS, SWOLLEN LEGS, AND AN INJURED SHOULDER. THE CONTACT MENTIONED BEING CURRENTLY UNDER A DOCTORS CARE DUE TO THE IMPACT. THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN IF A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Component or System Failed or Malfunctioned: The ABS harness connecting to the ABS module is the primary culprit. Specifically, the top part of the harness is not adequately sealed, which has led to water ingress and subsequent wire shorting. Availability for Inspection: No, the ABS harness is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The malfunctioning ABS harness poses a significant safety risk. When the ABS system fails, it affects braking performance, stability control, and traction control. This jeopardizes the safety of both the driver and other road users. Confirmation by Service Centers: While the issue was previously identified by the Hyundai Dealer it was attributed to a short in the Tow Hitch Wire. Unfortunately, the problem was not adequately resolved at that time. The recent appearance of the ESC Light, ABS Light, and Traction Control Light confirms that the issue persists. Inspections: The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives specifically for this issue. However, the symptoms (warning lights) have been observed consistently during driving. Warning Lamps and Symptoms: ESC Light: Periodic flashing and occasional getting stuck. ABS Light and Traction Control Light: Illuminating after driving, especially during turns or rapid acceleration. These symptoms have been present for an extended period. Cause Assessment: The top part of the ABS harnesses not being properly sealed has allowed water ingress, leading to wire shorting.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Veracruz. The contact stated while driving at approximately 45 MPH and slowing to exit a highway while turning to the right on the exit ramp the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the power steering failed, and extra force was needed to turn the steering wheel. The contact did not notice any warning lights being illuminated. The contact stopped and turned off and restarted the vehicle and the steering regained normal functionality. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic determined that the alternator and battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure returned and additionally, the vehicle was leaking engine oil. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the alternator needed to be replaced and that the seal on the oil drain plug was replaced. The vehicle was repaired but was still leaking oil and experiencing intermittent engine stalls. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

THIS IS MOSTLY FROM MEMORY WITH MOST RECENT DATA REPORTED. MY 2008 VERACUZ HAS HAD THE VALVE COVER GASKET REPAIRED OR REPLACED A MINIMUM OF 4 TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED IT ON 4/30/09 FROM O'BRIEN HYUNDAI. THE FIRST TIME WAS ABOUT 2 YEARS AFTER I BOUGHT IT. DEALER FOUND LEAK DURING OIL CHANGE AND ATTEMPTED TO SEAL WITH A SILICONE. THAT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AND VALVE COVER GASKET WAS REPLACED. A YEAR PLUS LATER I WAS DRIVING HOME WHEN I COULD NOT GOT FASTER THAT 35 MPH. WHEN I DROVE INTO MY DEVELOPMENT, THE MAX SPEED WAS 10 MPH. I BARELY GOT INTO MY DRIVEWAY AND THE CAR STOPPED. IT TURNED OUT THAT OIL FROM A LEAKING VALVE COVER GASKET HAD SHORTED THE ALTERNATOR AND THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING ON THE BATTERY. CAR WAS TOWED AND BOTH THE ALTERNATOR AND VALVE COVER GASKET WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. IN 2014, THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE LEAKING VALVE COVER GASKET PROBLEM AND MY CAR WAS REPAIRED AGAIN. IN NOVEMBER OF 2018, THE SERVICE TECH AT O'BRIEN HYUNDAI FOUND AN OIL LEAK DURING AN OIL CHANGE BUT WAS UNCERTAIN OF THE SOURCE. HE PUT A DYE IN THE OIL AND REQUESTED THAT I RETURN AFTER 2000 MILES SO HE COULD INSPECT FOR THE LEAK SOURCE. I TOOK IT BACK AFTER 2 WEEKS AND WAS TOLD THAT THE LEAK WAS FROM THE TIMING CHAIN COVER GASKET. HOWEVER, THE TIMING CHAIN COVER GASKET, THE VALVE COVER GASKET, THE WATER PUMP AND THE ALTERNATOR WERE ALL REPLACED UNDER THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. IN SEPTEMBER, THE "NEW" ALTERNATOR FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH A DRIVE BELT AT MY EXPENSE. THE FACT THAT THE VALVE COVER GASKET HAS BEEN REPLACED MULTIPLE TIMES IN MY VEHICLE MAKES ME CONCERNED THAT THE ENGINE DESIGN HAS A LATENT DEFECT WHICH CAN AND HAS RESULTED IN MY VEHICLE LOSING POWER WHILE IN USED CREATING A POTENTIALLY DEADLY SITUATION. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET SHOWS ME THAT MY SITUATION IS NOT ATYPICAL AND SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED BY YOUR AGENCY.

I PURCHASED A 2008 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ IN 2014. I WAS TAKING A FRIEND HOME AND AS I WAS PULLING IN ALL LIGHTS LIT UP AND CAR JUST SHUTS OFF. I COULDN'T GET THE CAR TO DO ANYTHING. I HAD THE CAR TOWED. MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS DOESN'T WORK, DOOR HANDLES ARE ALL BROKEN, SEAT BELTS DOESN'T WORK, ALTERNATOR HAS BEEN CHANGE 3 TIMES DUE TO OIL LEAKAGE,NO RADIO, THE RPM'S GOES UP AND DOWN AND TRUNK WON'T OPEN.
THE HEADLIGHTS FLASH OFF AND BACK ON WHEN USING THE TURN SIGNALS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING. VERY SCARY. OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI VEHICLES. SOLUTION SEEMS TO BE REPLACING HEADLIGHT SWITCH (CONTROL STALK).

LEAKING FLUID ON MY DRIVEWAY. NO ACTION ON RECALL NOTED ON NOV. 19, 2014 HYUNDAI REPAIR INVOICE. REFERENCE MANUFACTURER RECALL # 197. IT HAS BEEN 7 YEARS WAITING FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE REMEDIED BY HYUNDAI. THIS SITUATION IS RIDICULOUS!
SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 WE HAD BROKE DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE. LOST ALL CONTROL OF CAR, NO STEERING, NO ACCELERATION, NO PARKING GEAR. MECHANICAL SAID THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK ABOVE THE ALTERNATOR. FRIED THE ALTERNATOR. YESTERDAY, WIFE WAS DRIVING, BROKE DOWN ON HIGHWAY. I LOOKED AT THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THERE IS OIL LEAKING FROM THE VALVE PAN GASKET DOWN INTO THE ALTERNATOR AGAIN. HYUNDAI SAYS MY MODEL OF 2008 VERACRUZ WASNT AFFECTED BY THE STANDING RECALL THAT IS ACTIVE RIGHT NOW. BUT I THINK MY CAR HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM WITH FAULTY VALVE PAN GASKETS. VEHICLE LOST POWER WHILE IN MOTION, ALL DUMMY LIGHTS CAME ON. ENGINE SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT ALLOW IS TO GET IT IN PARK. MECHANICS CHECKED THE BATTERY. BATTERY TESTED PERFECT. SAID IT HAD LOW VOLTAGE AND WASNT BEING CHARGED BY THE SYSTEM

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ. WITH HALF OF THE CONTACT'S BODY LEANING INSIDE THE VEHICLE, THE REAR HATCH CAME DOWN AND STRUCK HER NECK. SHE HAD TO RELEASE THE HATCH FROM HER NECK. SHE SUFFERED MUCH PAIN AND HAS SOUGHT HELP FROM DOCTORS. THE CONTACT WENT TO THE DEALER AND STATED THAT SHE NO LONGER WANTED THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THEY REFUSED TO TAKE IT BACK. THE MANAGER STATED THAT THIS WAS NOT A COMMON FAILURE. SHE BELIEVES IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD FOR THE REAR HATCH TO FALL DOWN ON ITS OWN AND COULD CAUSE MORE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO OTHERS IN THE FUTURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,200 AND CURRENT MILEAGE IS 7,500. UPDATED 06/08/09 *BF UPDATED 06/18/09.*JB

NORMAL DRIVING HABITS ON THE 2008 VERACRUZ. AFTER HEARING A LARGE CLUNK GOING SPEEDS VARIABLE FROM 5-45 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR IS UNRESPONSIVE AND VEHICLE IS UNSAFE. RESTARTED ENGINE MULTIPLE TIMES TO WORK "NORMALLY" AGAIN. IT APPEARS THAT HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND SUGGESTS REPLACING THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR ($41.00) AND AN UPGRADE THE VEHICLE. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL BECAUSE IF THIS HAPPENS AT THE WRONG TIME, SOMEONE COULD DIE FROM IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND DECELERATED. SHE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE BUT IT CONTINUED TO LOSE POWER. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO MOVE FORWARD BUT NO MORE THAN 10 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE STATION AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE TPS (RELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION) MAY HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE LOCAL DEALER AFTER IT WAS TOWED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 14,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 13,000. From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVING SLOWLY ON CITY STREETS, I BEGAN BRAKING AT A STOP SIGN, WHEN 3 DASH INDICATOR SENSOR LIGHTS CAME ON. THE ABS, ESC AND THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE SENSOR LIGHTS. AFTER STOPPING I CONTINUED AND THE CAR STARTED TO JERK AND WAS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. IT WAS TRYING TO BRAKE WHILE I WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE. I IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO OUR DRIVEWAY AND HAD TO CANCEL OUR OUTING. CALLED THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS A LEFT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PROBLEM. THE COST FOR THE REPAIR WILL BE $550.00.
2008 VERACRUZ THAT FEELS LIKE MY BRAKE PEDAL IS GRINDING AND PULSATING AT SPEEDS LESS THAN 20 MPH. THE BRAKES GRIND RANDOMLY AND KICK BACK TOWARDS MY FOOT, AND I HAVE TO RE-BRAKE. IT ONLY HAPPENS AFTER THE CAR IS INITIALLY TURNED OFF AND THE FIRST ONE OR TWO BREAKS. THEN, BEHAVES NORMALLY. IT WILL HAPPEN SEVERAL DAYS IN A ROW, SEVERAL TIMES IN A DAY AND/OR THEN COULD GO WEEKS OR MONTHS WITH IT NOT OCCURRING. WE DID NEW REAR BREAKS. THE DEALER SAID THE ROTORS AND PADS ARE FIND AND TOLD ME IT COULD BE FROM WATER OR SOMETHING GETTING IN THERE RANDOMLY (IE. POLLEN). I TEND TO COMPLETELY DISAGREE AS SOMETHING SIMPLE LIKE WATER WOULD NOT MAKE THIS SIGNIFICANT OF GRINDING/PULSATING SO CONTINUOUSLY BUT YET RANDOMLY. THIS BECOMES VERY SCARY CONTINUING TO HAPPEN BECAUSE I AM WONDERING IF SOMETHING IS ABOUT TO SNAP AND THE BREAKS WILL NOT WORK OR WHAT IS HAPPENING. I HAVE REVIEWED SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE WITH THE VERACRUZ. *TR
