What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 INFINITI QX56, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
There are times when driving under 50 mph brake light comes on and the brakes have goes out which cause me to do an emergency pullover turn off the truck for a few minutes and the brakes reset. This is very concerning for me. This has happened on a few occasions.
Occasionally Brake light turns on in my dashboard then my braking system loses hydraulic pressure and I have troubling braking till I turn car off then resets and goes back to normal but while brake light us on is very troubling and concerning? This has happened on many occasions since purchasing the car if I remember in 2018
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Infiniti QX56. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly stalled. Additionally, the contact became aware that the vehicle was experiencing inaccurate fuel gauge reading. The contact stated that the fuel gauge indicated that there was fuel in the vehicle while the fuel tank was empty. There was no warning light illuminated. No further information was available. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V074000 (Fuel System, Other) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
There was previous recall on this vehicle, 10V-074 (Infiniti #R1011) for a fuel sender problem, causing the fuel gauge to be inaccurate. Infiniti says it was fixed in 2010. Unfortunately, I am having the exact same problem now, and have run out of gas twice because of it. Infiniti said they can't help because it was already fixed. Safety issue because running out of fuel while driving is dangerous. Both times has been on an interstate. It was a previously reported recall and "fixed" but has failed again. Infiniti says they won't fix it again.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 INFINITI QX56. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS WHEN ENCOUNTERED A DITCH IN THE ROAD, THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE SWAYED AND THE STEERING WHEEL VIGOROUSLY SHOOK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THERE WAS NO DIAGNOSIS OR REPAIR COMPLETED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE AND STATED THEY WOULD SEND AN INVESTIGATOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100.
THERE WASN'T ANY ACCIDENTS, BUT IF THIS PROBLEM DOESN'T GET RESOLVED THERE WILL BE. THIS IS BY FAR THE MOST UNSAFE VEHICLE I'VE EVER COME ACROSS! IF YOU HIT ANY IRREGULAR ROAD SURFACE OR POTHOLE YOUR CAR SHIFTS. IF YOU ARE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS IT WILL ACTUALLY THROW YOUR CAR INTO THE LANE TO THE RIGHT. I'VE READ SEVERAL FORUMS WITH THE SAME TYPE OF COMPLAINTS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS STILL A PROBLEM I'M TERRIFIED TO DRIVE MY KIDS IN THIS AND I'M UNFORTUNATELY STUCK IN THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE I'M UPSIDE DOWN. THIS NEEDS ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY WHAT A TERRIBLE VEHICLE I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER! *TR

I was involved in an auto rollover accident on January2, 2023 when a driver "t-boned" me in my 2008 Infiniti Qx56 striking the middle of the passenger side of my Qx56 after running a stop sign and failing to yield to my right of way causing my Qx56 to roll over 3 times. My driver's steering wheel airbag did NOT deploy. To my knowledge all the other airbags did deploy. I suffered neck, right shoulder, and lower back injuries from the rollover but remained in the driver's seat as the seatbelt system worked well. My Qx56 was a total loss.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 INFINITI QX56. WHEN THE CONTACT STARTED THE VEHICLE, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND BLINKED ON AND OFF. CONSTANT MOISTURE BUILD UP CAUSING HEADLIGHT BURNOUT A DANGEROUS SITUATION DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL POLICE PULLED ME OVER. FIVE TIMES THIS INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED. VERY EXPENSIVE FIX AND EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT. UNFAIR TO CONSUMER AUTO SHOPS SAYS THE COMPANY KNOWS ABOUT IT. A SAFETY RECALL IS NEEDED.
HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY IS CRACKED AND CONDENSATION BUILDS UP, SHORTING OUT THE IGNITER. APPARENTLY MY MECHANIC SAYS THAT NISSAN AND INFINITI KNOW OF THE PROBLEM 8 MODELS FOR 6 YEARS (OR 6 MODELS FOR 8 YEARS) AND HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL. BUT THE PRICE FOR THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES AND IGNITORS ARE OUTRAGEOUS. THE PROBLEM IS SO PREVALENT, THERE IS A YOUTUBE VIDEO SHOWING HOW TO DRY OUT THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY AND CAULK IT TO REUSE! THIS MANY PROBLEMS AND NO RECALL SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS. IT COST ME $1000 TO REPLACE AN IGNITOR. IT WOULD HAVE COST $4,000 TO REPLACE TWO HEADLAMP ASSEMBLIES. WHO HAS $4,000 TO REPLACE A COUPLE OF HEADLAMPS????? AND HOW IS THIS SAFE. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE WITH ONE HEADLIGHT. THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD MAKE SURE THIS EQUIPMENT IS WORKING PROPERLY!!!!!

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 INFINTI QX56. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AND STALLED. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PRIORITY INFINITI OF GREENBRIER (1812 GREENBRIER PKWY, CHESAPEAKE, VA 23320) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,000. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.
APPARENTLY AS ALL OTHER COMPLAINTS ARE SIMILAR WITH THE BRAKE LIGHT COMING ON AND AS I APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE TO STOP THE SCRUBBING AND SCRAPING SOUND IS UNBEARABLE, I'VE BEEN TOLD IT'S THE BRAKE BOOSTER IS BAD FOR INFINITI QX56. FIX THE PROBLEM IF EVERYONE IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE, PLEASE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. ALSO THERE'S AN EXHAUST LEAK WHICH YOU CAN TELL BY A FLICKERING NOISE WHEN YOU CRANK UP AND ACCELERATE.

Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE AND WHILE IN MOTION, THE ABS BRAKE LIGHT INDICATOR ON THE DASH CONTROL PANEL ILLUMINATES WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, WHICH CAUSE THE BRAKES TO SHAKE AND MAKE SCRAPING SOUND. AT THAT POINT THE BRAKES FAIL TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN A SAFE DISTANCE, INCREASING THE CHANCE OF A COLLISION. ABS BRAKE LIGHT CLEARS AND NORMAL BRAKE FUNCTIONS RETURN WHEN THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF, THEN BACK ON.
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY QUESTION IS SOMEWHAT IRRELEVANT NOW, SEEING THAT THE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLES IS ALREADY DONE. I HAVE OWNED TWO VEHICLES MADE BY NISSAN, A 2004 ARMADA LE AND NOW A 2008 INFINITI QX56. ON BOTH OF THESE UNITS THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL PINION SEAL LEAKED CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BEARINGS. I HAVE HEARD OF MANY OTHERS EXPERIENCING THIS SAME PROBLEM. Q. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHY THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED BY NISSAN? IT'S OBVIOUS THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM (AMONG MANY OTHERS WITH THIS VEHICLE) THAT NISSAN CHOOSES TO IGNORE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 INFINITY QX56. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER SHIFTING INTO PARK WITH THE ENGINE TURNED ON AND EXITING THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE ERRONEOUSLY ROLLED AWAY AND CRASHED INTO A NEARBY BUILDING WITHIN TEN MINUTES. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE SHIFTER LEVER WAS STILL ENGAGED IN PARK AFTER THE FAILURE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT NO INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED TO THE CONTACT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONSOLE'S INDEPENDENT DETACHMENT FROM THE VEHICLE WAS CAUSE FOR CONCERN AND HINDERED THE VIEW OF THE REAR WINDOW. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONSOLE WAS HELD TOGETHER BY HAND WHILE DRIVING TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE AND OBSTRUCTION OF VIEW. INFINITI OF GWINNETTE (3090 SATELLITE BLVD, DULUTH, GEORGIA 30096) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE CENTER CONSOLE FRACTURED AND FELL OFF OF ITS HINGES.
