Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

  • Brakes375.0%
  • Engine125.0%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

4 campaigns cover this model year

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Jan 28, 2003
146 units potentially affected
The defect: CERTAIN SCHOOL BUSES AND HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS BUILT WITH HYDRAULIC BRAKES AND AN AIR POWERED PARKING BRAKE (BRAKE CODE 04GAS) FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRIC BRAKE SYSTEMS." THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE MONITOR MODULE WAS NOT INSTALLED ON CERTAIN VEHICLES.
The risk: WITHOUT THE BRAKE MONITOR MODULE, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON DURING THE INITIAL KEY-ON CYCLE AND WILL NOT COME ON TO WARN THE OPERATOR IF THERE IS A LOSS OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM, A LOSS OF POWER STEERING FLOW, OR IF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BOOSTER MOTOR IS NOT FUNCTIONING.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE MONITOR MODULE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS BEGAN DURING FEBRUARY 2003. Sep 20, 2002
11,204 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN MEDIUM AND HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS BUILT WITH DRIVELINE PARKING BRAKE CODES 04GAR, THE PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY MAY NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE IN POSITION WHEN SET. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THIS POSSIBILITY ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) CRACKED OR BROKEN CAMS; (2) LOOSE OR BROKEN ANCHOR BOLTS; (3) INITIAL SHOE DIAMETER NOT SET PROPERLY DURING ASSEMBLY, WHICH CAN LEAD TO PROGRESSIVE COMPONENT DAMAGE; (4) BENT ADJUSTER LEVERS THAT CANNOT FUNCTION; OR (5) AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER CABLES THAT ARE DISCONNECTED.
The risk: IF THE PARKING BRAKE DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL, WITHOUT WARNING, AFTER THE PARKING BRAKE LEVER HAS BEEN SET, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CAM, LEVER, AND BOLT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 30, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

WE'VE HAD TWO ENGINE FAILURES WITH THIS TRUCK. THE FIRST OCCURRED AT 121,000 MILES WHEN AN O-RING ON A CYLINDER SLEEVE FAILED LETTING COOLANT FILL THE CRANKCASE AND REQUIRING A COMPLETE ENGINE OVERHAUL THAT COST US OVER $6,000 DOLLARS. THE TRUCK WAS MORE THAN 3 YEARS OLD SO WE HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. AFTER PUTTING ONLY 40,000 MILES ON THE REBUILT ENGINE IT HAS THROWN A ROD OUT THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK COMPLETELY RUINING THE ENGINE. IT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $16,000. WE HAVE CONTACTED NAVISTAR BECAUSE THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID BOTH FAILURES WERE CAUSED BY POOR WORKMANSHIP, DEFECTIVE MATERIALS, OR FAULTY DESIGN. NAVISTAR HAS REFUSED TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

This tool is designed to compare Diamond Logic feature data across multiple vehicle configuration files. It allows users to quickly load files either manually or directly from the Diamond Logic Builder Vehicles folder using VIN-based selection. As files are added or removed, the comparison runs automatically with no manual action required. The program presents results in an interactive table that shows feature codes, descriptions, access levels, and whether each feature is present in each selected file. Built-in search, filtering, and sorting make it easy to locate specific features or focus only on differences between files. Column visibility can be customized to show or hide descriptions and access information as needed. Users can remove files individually or clear all files at once, with results updating instantly. The tool also includes reporting and export options that reflect exactly what is visible on screen, allowing results to be printed, copied, saved as text, or exported to CSV for use in Excel or other spreadsheet tools. Overall, the program streamlines the process of comparing vehicle feature configurations, helping users quickly identify differences, validate setups, and document results without manual comparison or external tools.

In some geographic areas, ambient temperatures reaching below 15°F (-10 °C), including high levels of humidity, an operator may experience engine stalling, low performance, and or poor aftertreatment performance. This is caused by condensation accumulating and freezing within the Charge Air Cooler (CAC); affecting air flow into the engine. This article lists all the currently available winter front covers that can be installed on the front grille and bumper to reduce cold air flow to the engine compartment.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
