Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
1
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

High Pressure Oil Line Rupture

Opened Apr 16, 2012
Closed Oct 2, 2012

On April 16, 2012 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Preliminary Evaluation (PE12-011) to assess the risks associated with rupture of the high pressure oil line to the fuel injectors causing an engine stall in model year (MY) 2008 International CE school buses equipped with International I-6 diesel engines. On August 31, 2012 ODI received Navistar's response to its August 2, 2012, information request letter and identified 3 consumer complaints with one involving an oil line rupture that resulted in an engine compartment fire.ODI also identified 470 warranty claims related to the defect. This calculates to a warranty rate of 2.8 percent for the subject population.Navistar has released two Technical Service Information (TSI) bulletins and two iKNow (information) articles pertaining to the high pressure hose in the I-6 engine.Following discussions with ODI concerning the warranty rate, consumer complaints and interviews, and the risk to students resulting from a stranded bus, Navistar decided to submit recall notices (12V-473 and 12V-476) on the subject vehicles to address the high pressure hose failures.Navistar's recall actions address the issues raised by this investigation and as a result this investigation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification (ODI) numbers: 10450319 and 10455151.

THE INTERNATIONAL DT 466 SCHOOL BUS ENGINE SUDDENLY EXPERIENCED EXTREME PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION WITHOUT ANY WARNING WHILE DRIVING. THE ENGINE STARTED A POPPING NOISE AND SEVERELY LACKED POWER. WE PURCHASED 75 SCHOOL BUSES IN 2008, AND 26 PERCENT OF THEM HAD ROLLER TAPPET GUIDES FAIL BY FEBRUARY 2013. IN EVERY CASE, THIS FAILURE MODE RESULTED IN MAJOR DAMAGE TO ENGINE VALVE TRAIN COMPONENTS. TWO ENGINES OUT OF 26 TOTAL FAILURES TO DATE WERE NOT REPAIRABLE AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE CURRENT FAILURE HAS NOW GROWN TO 34 PERCENT. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD TO SCHOOL CHILDREN AND OTHER VEHICLES WHEN A SCHOOL BUS ENGINE SUDDENLY EXPERIENCES SEVERE ENGINE DEGRADATION ON THE ROAD.

THE DRIVER OF THIS SCHOOL BUS APPROACHED A STUDENTS DROP-OFF LOCATION AND ACTIVATED THE AMBER 8-WAYS. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE DRIVER OPENED THE DOOR TO LET OFF THE STUDENTS. DUE TO A FAULTY DOOR SWITCH (INTERNATIONAL PART #2207601C1) THE RED FLASHING 8-WAY LIGHTS AS WELL AS THE STOP ARM FAILED TO ACTIVATE. THIS PROMPTED THE DRIVER OF ANOTHER VEHICLE TO GO PAST THE SCHOOL BUS WHILE IT WAS STOPPED AND THE STUDENTS WERE UNLOADING. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THIS INCIDENT. UNFORTUNATELY, IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS SWITCH HAS FAILED. DELIVERY DATE OF THIS VEHICLE WAS AUG. 2007. THE ORIGINAL SWITCH WAS REPLACED ON FEB. 2008 AT 31,000 MILES. IT WAS ALSO REPLACED ON SEPT. 2010 AT 60,000 MILES, AND NOW IN APRIL, 2012 AT 92,000 MILES. WE HAVE 12 OTHER BUSES WITH THIS SAME SWITCH AND ALL OF THEM HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. *TR

OWNER OPERATOR OF SCHOOL BUS STATES THAT FOUR (UPPER-LOWER-RIGHT-LEFT) DUAL PANE DOOR WINDOWS HAVE FOGGED DUE TO WATER ENTRY BETWEEN THE PANES. OWNER HAS REMOVED THE PANES IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT AND FOUND THAT (AT LEAST ONE OF) THE PANES HAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE PANE "SANDWICH." OWNER WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE COATING FROM THE GLASS WITH SOLVENTS, ETC. THIS OWNER IS PART OF A GROUP OF EIGHT PURCHASERS WHO PURCHASED A PORTION OF "ON-SITE" INVENTORY OF BUSSES WHICH WERE ALL EQUIPPED WITH THE SAME GLASS FEATURE (I.E. PURCHASERS DID NOT SPECIFY THIS OPTION). OWNER OF A RELATED VEHICLE PREVIOUSLY FILED VOQ 10416533. *TR

HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE SINCE I PURCHASED IT 10/07. ELECTRICAL, WOULD NOT START IN COLD WEATHER, CONTINUAL DRAW ON BATTERIES REPLACED WITH NEW AND ALSO ADDED A THIRD. NUMEROUS EGR VALVES, EGR COOLERS, LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMPS, FUEL SUPPLY CONNECTORS DPF'S, WILL NOT DO MANUAL REGEN WHEN INDICATORS ON DASHBOARD CALL FOR IT, THIS HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY, USES OIL AND ANTIFREEZE CONTINUALLY, STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED AT APPROX. 40,000 MILES, ALOT OF DIESEL FUEL HAS BEEN IN OIL, APRIL 2010,OIL AND AGAIN SEPT 2011. HAVE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE SERVICE DOOR MOTOR,CROSS GATE MOTOR(SEVERAL)THERMO PANE GLASS DOORS LEAKED, FORMED CONDENSATION AND DRIED LEAVING A CLOUDY RESIDUE RESTRICTING VISIBILITY, HAD TO BE REPLACED. MANY OTHER REPAIRS HAVE BEEN DONE TO. THIS VEHICLE DEALER REPAIR SHOPS ALSO DO NOT GIVE RECEIPTS WHEN WARRANTY WORK IS DONE. WHEN ASKED THEY TELL ME IT NEEDS TO GO THROUGH INTERNATIONAL FIRST AND THEN COPY WILL BE GIVEN, BUT RARELY HAPPENS. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO KEEP ASKING. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN DEALER REPAIR SHOPS AND MECHANICS HAVE DONE SERVICE CALLS MORE THAN 40 TIMES! THIS WAS MOST RECENTLY FROM THE END OF JUNE 2011 TO AUGUST 24,2011 AT TWO DIFFERENT FACILITIES WITH OUT ANY SATISFACTION, ONLY TO DRIVE IT AGAIN ON SEPT. 1,2011 TO HAVE MORE DIESEL IN THE OIL AND HARD TO START. ENGINE ALSO HAS A STUDDER, DEALER MODIFIED TRANI TO MAKE UP FOR THIS HESITATION WHICH HAS ONLY MADE IT WORSE. NOW DEALER HAS FINALLY AUTHORIZED INJECTORS TO BE REPLACED, MY CONCERN IS WHAT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED TO THE REST OF THE ENGINE? THE DEALER SHOULD PUT A NEW ENGINE IN WHILE THIS IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY OR LEMON LAW SHOULD ALSO BE ALLOWED FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. *KB

HI, I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT DEFECTIVE FUEL LINES ON IHC BUSSES. THE YEARS RANGE FROM 2008 365 ENGINE TO 2011 MAXFORCE 7. THE PROBLEM IS THEY HAVE ALUMIUM FUEL LINES AND HAVE STAINLESS KEEPERS FOR THE QUICK DISCONECT. THEY ARE RUBBING THROUGH AND CAUSING FUEL LEAKS. IT SPAYS UP ON MOTOR AND EXHAUST. I TOLD OUR LOCAL DEALER IN 2008 AND SEVERAL TIMES SINCE. IT IS GOING TO CAUSE FIRE AND OR DEATH. I AM SURE THIS COULD BE SOLVED BY USING STAINLEES LINES. THE CHILDEREN THAT RIDE MY BUSSES COME FIRST. PLEASE HELP BEFORE THEY KILL SOMEONE. THANK YOU *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

This tool is designed to compare Diamond Logic feature data across multiple vehicle configuration files. It allows users to quickly load files either manually or directly from the Diamond Logic Builder Vehicles folder using VIN-based selection. As files are added or removed, the comparison runs automatically with no manual action required. The program presents results in an interactive table that shows feature codes, descriptions, access levels, and whether each feature is present in each selected file. Built-in search, filtering, and sorting make it easy to locate specific features or focus only on differences between files. Column visibility can be customized to show or hide descriptions and access information as needed. Users can remove files individually or clear all files at once, with results updating instantly. The tool also includes reporting and export options that reflect exactly what is visible on screen, allowing results to be printed, copied, saved as text, or exported to CSV for use in Excel or other spreadsheet tools. Overall, the program streamlines the process of comparing vehicle feature configurations, helping users quickly identify differences, validate setups, and document results without manual comparison or external tools.

In some geographic areas, ambient temperatures reaching below 15°F (-10 °C), including high levels of humidity, an operator may experience engine stalling, low performance, and or poor aftertreatment performance. This is caused by condensation accumulating and freezing within the Charge Air Cooler (CAC); affecting air flow into the engine. This article lists all the currently available winter front covers that can be installed on the front grille and bumper to reduce cold air flow to the engine compartment.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
