REAR INNER WHEEL BEARINGS
SUMMARY OF INFORMATION FROM MANUFACTURER:ON MAY 22, 1987, PETERBILTINITIATED A FIELD REPAIR PROGRAM FOR INSPECTION OF 577 VEHICLES SUSPECTEDOF HAVING INSTALLED ONE OR MORE INCORRECT REAR WHEEL BEARINGS.BASED ONREVIEW OF REPAIR RECORDS FOR 156 VEHICLES INSPECTED AS OF OCTOBER 31, 1987,AND INFORMATION FROM AXLE MANUFACTURERS, THE SAFETY COMMITTEE DECIDED TOPROCEED WITH A SAFETY RECALL.ANALYSIS:INCORRECT INNER WHEEL BEARINGS COULD WEAR A GROOVE IN THE AXLESPINDLE.IF THE GROOVE IS WORN DEEP ENOUGH, IT COULD CAUSE THE AXLEHOUSING TO BREAK AT THAT POINT, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A LOSS OF CONTROL OFTHE VEHICLE.PROPOSED ACTION:CLOSE THIS PE.PACCAR SENT A DEFECT REPORT DATEDDECEMBER 3, 1987.RECALL NUMBER IS 87V-189.===
