2005 Jeep Liberty Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Jeep Liberty, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

EVERY TIME I GET GAS, THE LIBERTY CANNOT TELL WHEN TO STOP THE PUMP FROM PUMPING GAS. GAS ENDS UP OVERFLOWING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE CAR, ON THE GROUND AND EVEN SOMETIMES ON ME. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION.

FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT ON RIGHT SIDE HAS FELL OUT TWICE, 8 MONTHS APART. BOTH TIMES THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, GOING LESS THE 20 MPH. ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY, AND ON ON REGULAR PAVED ROAD. I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ON THE ROAD BOTH TIMES. THE FIRST TIME IT BROKE, IT CAUSE MY WHEEL TO BREAK AND FLATTER MY TIRE, SECOND TIME IT DAMAGED MY WHEEL BUT DIDN'T NOT BUST THROUGH IT. MOTOR MOUNTS HAVE BROKE 2 TIMES AS WEEK 1 WEEK AFTER REPAIRED IT BROKE THE 2ND TIME. TRANSMISSION MOUNT HAS ALSO BROKE.

Today 6/16/2025 I’m having trouble turning to the right and left leaving from a stop sign we checked to be sure power steering fluid is full and it is. The person who checked the power steering fluid level, said that there is rubber grommets under the hood with the suspension and staring that look like they are all decayed or dry rotted. I have not had a problem with it breaking yet, but I’m sure that’s coming. Not sure it’s safe to drive.

About 6 months ago the passenger side front end to hit the ground, just after going 60 miles an hour thankfully turning in daughter's driveway. Lower ball joint passenger side came apart. On Monday doing 35 mph the driver side hits the pavement hard! Luckily I ditched in a driveway on the left! The tire slammed into the fender well breaking the plastic there and the piece that goes back under the doors? Ball joint broke completely into? I'm on my third day of working in the rain alongside a road repairing this?

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY DIESEL CRD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE TWICE, IN JUNE 2011 AND AGAIN FIVE WEEKS LATER, FOR THE SAME RELATED FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FIRES WERE CAUSED BY THE TRANSMISSION VENT THAT RELEASED FLUID ONTO THE EXHAUST PIPE. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND WHILE DRIVING, CAUSED THE FLUIDS TO LEAK AND CAUSE A FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES DURING EITHER FIRE. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE WAS A REPORTED AS A MECHANICAL PROBLEM AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 46,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH AND STEERING COLUMN WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS NO ELECTRICAL CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE STARTER AND THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THERE WERE ALUMINUM PIECES THAT FRACTURED IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE THE PARTS NEEDED WERE ON BACKORDER. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS IGNORING THE ISSUE WHICH HE STATED WAS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED TWICE SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,100. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

While driving on a long trip, a burning smell was noticed. The heated seats had not been turned on, as they are rarely used & the indicator light for the heated seats was not on. When the driver stopped to inspect, the back of the seat had burned through the lumbar support pillow. The seat is severely charred and damaged through the inner foam layer of the seat. The seat will need to be replaced. The driver could have been seriously injured if the seat had caught fire. Jeep was notified, but expressed absolutely no concern & offered no assistance. An online review revealed that this is a known problem for Chrysler/Jeep (in particular Jeep Liberty) and there have been severe injuries. How many instances must occur before a safety recall occurs? We had no idea that this safety concern existed prior to our own experience.

AS A SINGLE MOTHER OF BABY TWINS, I AM BOTH COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT AS WELL AS GRATEFULLY RELIEVED TO HAVE FOUND THIS SITE. THE COMPLAINTS READ LIKE A CHECKLIST OF PAST ISSUES AND GOD WILLING, PREVENTABLE FUTURE ISSUES. THE GAS TANK CANNOT BE "TOPPED OFF"... ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, THIS WAS A SEEMINGLY ACCEPTABLE ISSUE. THE ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON ACCOMPANIED BY TOTALLY UNEXPLAINED STALLING EVERY SO OFTEN BECAME A PROBLEM WHICH WOULD CEASE JUST AS RANDOMLY AS IT OCCURRED. FINALLY (WHEN PREGNANT AND NERVOUS) I BROUGHT IT IN AFTER ONE TOO MANY TIMES. APPARENTLY THIS JEEP MODEL/YEAR IS WEATHER SENSITIVE. RAIN SEEMED TO BE THE CATALYST, BUT I REFUSE TO PUT ONE OF THOSE ANAL PERSON CAR COVERS ON BECOMING A SLAVE TO THE WEATHERCHANNEL. MECHANIC CHANGED TEMPERAMENTAL SENSOR WHICH, SO FAR, SEEMS TO BE MANAGED. THE A/C FAN ONLY WORKS AT 3 AND UP, WHICH IS TOO MUCH HOT/COLD FOR EVEN THE MOST ANEMIC AFTER MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES. BACK TO THE WEATHER, WINTER CAUSES FRONT STRUTS TO CREAK AND MOAN LIKE A GERIATRIC BEAST. ONCE AGAIN, THIS IS ANNOYING BUT SEEMINGLY INNOCUOUS. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SHIFT ONLY WORKS IN PART TIME HI (OR LOW, DON'T RECALL), WHICH IS DISAPPOINTING THOUGH AGAIN, NOT LIFE THREATENING. THE COMBINATION OF THESE DEFECTS SIMPLY FEELS AS IF IT WAS BUILT WITH INDIFFERENCE TO THE CONSUMER. NOW THAT I HAVE TWO PRICELESS PASSENGERS, I REFUSE TO WAIT FOR THE CV JOINTS TO DISENGAGE BEFORE DEMANDING ALL REPAIRS BE MADE AND DOUBLE CHECKED BY MY IMPLICITLY TRUSTED MECHANIC (IRONICALLY ALSO A TWIN). IN CLOSING, THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED THEIR STORIES AND ENLIGHTENING ME TO CAUTION REGARDING THE DANGEROUS FLAWS AS WELL AS COMMISERATING OUR SHARED FRUSTRATION WITH THE PROBLEMS, LIKE THE WINDOW TRACK DISENGAGING, WHICH COMBINED ARE ONE BIG EXPENSIVE POTENTIALITY DANGEROUS HEADACHE. *TR
