2012 Jeep Patriot Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2012 Jeep Patriot, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Certified dealership service department omitted structural safety complaints from official service invoices, left vital diagnostic findings and performance metrics off paperwork tracking paths, cleared a compromised front suspension layout as safe, and actively instructed a vehicle operator to execute a driving pattern that induces sudden power loss on public roadway infrastructure. TIMELINE SUMMARY OF DEALERSHIP SERVICE (see uploaded PDF for details): March 26, 2026: Diagnostic service and fees for front right tire and new spark plugs. Left bay with immediate new serious issue. March 30, 2026: Follow up on new issue. No alerts. Given clearance. Zero charge invoice. May 19, 2026: Follow up AGAIN on same issue. Scheduled eventually after multiple tries to reach Supervisor. RPM alert reading. Technician gave negligent advice causing further damage to my vehicle and putting me in danger. The technician noted an unprecedented 3,000 to 4,000 RPM calculation anomaly on his computer screen yet dismissed the hazard by blaming my driving habits as "too gentle." He instructed me to find a ramp or an open stretch of road to "rev up" the acceleration and seek out cleaner fuel brands. Incomplete records. Zero charge invoice. I followed the advice and caused further damage and put myself and others at risk on the roads. June 22, 2026: Second opinion. Failing transmission and front arm controls damage. Reputable business reported: "Found front control arm bushings damaged and inop. Transmission fluid sample is dark and has a clutch odor. Test drove monitoring misfire and transmission: misfire 0. Trans slip during test drive even shows abnormal transmission slip. Recommend replacement of transmission and torque converter assembly." June 26, 2026: called management for full accountability. I request full repairs immediately. This situation created serious interruptions to my schedule and a threat to my personal safety. July 14, 2026: Certified letters to dealership.

THE CONTACT RELATED THE FAILURE TONHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V120000 . CAR STALLS AT EVERY STOP. WHILE DRIVING HIGH WAY SPEEDS FOR A FEW MINUTES IT DROPS DOWN IN SPEED CAUSING YOU CLOSE CALL ACCIDENTS BECAUSE IT IS VERY SUDDEN. IF I DRIVE THE JEEP AND COME TO A COMPLETE STOP REGARDLESS IF AT STOP SIGN RED LIGHT OR BEHIND TRAFFIC THE CAR WILL TURN OFF HAVING ME TO TURN THE KEY IN OFF POSITION AND PUT IT IN PARK TO START IT AGAIN. IF I AM ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING I CAN BE GOING 45 MPH AND ALL OF SUDDEN THE JEEP STARTS DECLINING IN ITS ACCELERATION AND WILL NOT GO ABOVE 10MPH. ALSO WHEN INITIALLY STARTING UP IF I HAVE TO BACK UP IT TURNS OFF WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF BACKING UP. THIS ISSUE IS BEEN KNOWN TO HAPPEN TO A FEW PEOPLE WHO I KNOW THAT OWN THE SAME EXACT JEEP OR THE 2012 MODEL. ALSO HAVE HAD IT CHECKED OUT AND ONLY THING THAT POPS UP IS A CODE FOR THE GAS CAP WHICH I HAVE REPLACED AND STILL POPS THE CODE FOR IT

WHILE DRIVING OR IN A PARKED POSITION WHILE THE ENGINE RUNS, THE RPM NEEDLE DROPS TO ZERO 0 AND MY CAR DOESN'T ACCELERATE WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. THERE ARE TIMES I AM ON THE HIGHWAY AND RPM DROPS TO ZERO 0 AND I HAVE TO PULL OVER ON THE SHOULDERS. I WOULD HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, AND SHUT MY CAR OFF FOR EXTRA MINUTES OR MORE BEFORE I CAN FULLY RESTART IT. IF I TRY TURNING THE CAR ON BEFORE THE 2 MINUTES IT WOULD TAKE A LONGER TIME TO RESTART. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE CAR SHUT OFF WHEN I'M AT THE STOP LIGHT, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. WHEN MAKING A TURN, AND THE RPM NEEDLE DROPS TO ZERO 0, MY STEERING WHEEL BECOMES SO STIFF/HARDEN AND IS VERY VERY DIFFICULT TO COMPLETE THE TURN.

The subframe and rear cross members are extremely rusted and corroded, resulting in the vehicle being unsafe to drive. While there appears to be a ten year extended warranty covering the repair of this problem, apparently not every 2012 Jeep Patriot qualifies for extended warranty which only applies vehicles manufactured at only certain locations. According to FCA customer care the extended warranty does not attach my VIN number, although the rust and corrosion problem is identical to the damage repaired for other Jeep Patriots.

WHEN IN IDLE AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE JEEP ENGINE SHUT OFF RANDOMLY WITH A BEEPING ALARM AND RED FLASHING BOLT ON THE DASH, REQUIRED ME TO TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION AND RESTART THE CAR, THIS HAS ALSO HAPPENED ONCE WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. BATTERY IS NEW AND BOTH THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR TESTED GOOD. WHEN ACCELERATING, BRAKING, OR STEERING, THE CABIN LIGHTS, HEADLIGHTS AND DASH/RADIO DIM OR BRIGHTEN OFTEN SLIGHT FLICKERING AND SOME TIMES THE INTERIOR ROOF CAB LIGHTS RANDOMLY TURN ON WHILE DRIVING EVEN WHEN NO DOOR IS AJAR AND DIMMER SWITCH IS TURNED DOWN OR COMPLETELY OFF. APPEARS THERE IS SOME SORT OF ELECTRICAL SHORT OR POWER DRAW ISSUE. THE REAR DRUM BREAKS CONTINUOUSLY SQUEAL, LEAK AND LEAVE RUST RESIDUE CORRODING THE RIMS EVEN THOUGH I'VE HAD THEM MAINTAINED AND CHANGED BY CERTIFIED GOODYEAR MECHANICS
