2017 Jeep Wrangler Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Recent ABS module failure w C2200 code. Took to Chrysler/Jeep dealer for repair and was told replacement module part is unavailable with up to and more, a year backorder. Was advised there was nothing they could do to repair. Researched other dealers and suppliers with same results. This is certainly a safety concern as this ABS module failure appears to be a common failure in Jeeps of this and adjacent model years and there is nothing a dealer or any other service firm can repair due to part availability.

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30-45 MPH, the vehicle lost power. On another occasion, while driving at 20 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. While shifting into gear, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The check engine warning light illuminated after the failure. The driver was able to pull over safely. The vehicle was running, and the heat was functioning. The vehicle was towed to a AAA Service Center, where the filter and oil were changed; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to AAA again, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Transmission clunking when changing gears, while my abs light is on. The break pedals rumble and the car is scary to drive. These issues are with a faulty abs control module.

ABS and Traction Control lights are on. Sometimes Emergency Brake light comes on causing it to go into “limp mode”. This is dangerous for me bc this is my Mail Jeep. I’m driving on roads where the speed limits are sometimes posted at 55mph. Mechanic replaced the rear wheel sensors because the computer indicated that was the problem. Did not fix the problem. The ABS Module has to be replaced and they’re on back order. Forums online have many different people stating they’re having the same problem with JEEP. JEEP parts department stating it could be a year or more before the part comes in and is available.

Cruise control was not working. The Jeep would also idle too fast when stopped but not get to the proper speed while driving. ABS brake light was on with code that rear wheel brake sensor was not working. Sensor was replaced but it still doesn't work. C. Harper Jeep garage in Connellsville, PA says the ABS module is bad and not supplying power to the wheel sensors. This part is supposedly on back order with no known time of availability. The fuel injector also needed replaced but not sure what caused that problem. Other 2017 Jeeps had recalls for electrical problems but seems that my vin was not, maybe it should have been!

ABS module failed 2 years ago. No traction control, no cruise control, no stability management. This part has been on backorder for 2 years and affects many years. Issue started intermittently about 3 years ago while driving, now the vehicle is extremely unstable in wet conditions. Dealership has diagnosed and said to check back every few months for a solution. Additionally the plastic oil filter housing has been replaced 2 times in 2 years at a cost of $1,200, the second install was covered by parts warranty. Dealers won't install the metal version available on other years that do not have a cracking issue, aftermarket metal versions are available but dealers won't install them.

DTCs for left AND right rear wheel sensors. wiring was open on sensors and caused the speed sensors to not read properly at times 3.00. the sensors were replaced at Mac Haik. 3 other jeeps had the same issue the same day. ABS and traction control lights on dash came on before the sensors were replaced and applying gas did nothing. my jeep was automatically applying my breaks even when I went 5 mph.

SECOND SENSOR DRIVER SIDE REAR WENT OUT AT 40, 000 MILES JUST OUTSIDE WARRANTY AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE TO MY WIFE. SHE IS NOW SCARED TO DRIVE VEHICLE. CALLED JEEP AND THEY DID NOTHING. I PAID FOR REPAIR, BUT CAN'T REPAIR MY WIFE'S SYCHE. I EXPECT A RECALL, IT IS NOT SAFE FOR THE SENSORS TO GO OUT LIKE THAT. THERE ARE MANY JEEP MESSAGE BOARDS THAT DEPICT SAME ISSUES. IT IS MY INTENT TO CONTACT AN ATTORNEY FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS

SEVERAL TIMES, AT LEAST 100 MY STABILITY CONTROL HAS ACTIVATED ON CLEAR DRY ROADS. WHEN THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE VEHICLE TWITCHES SEVERELY AND IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO STAY IN YOUR LANE ON A DRY ROAD. IF YOU WERE ON A SLIPPERY ROAD IT WOULD LIKELY CAUSE A SLIDE. ALSO WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE VEHICLE SLOWS. I'VE HAD THE STABILITY CONTROL ACTIVATE WHEN MERGING ON THE FREEWAY, MY CAR SLOWED SO MUCH AND SUDDENLY THE CAR BEHIND ME HAD TO BRAKE AND HONKED THEIR HORN. I'VE HAD MY VEHICLE SERVICED AT, AT LEAST 2 DIFFERENT CHRYSLER JEEP DEALERSHIPS 5 DIFFERENT TIMES SO FAR, IT'S STILL NOT FIXED. CURRENTLY, MY VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP AND IT'S BEEN THERE OVER A WEEK THIS TIME. STILL, NO IDEA WHAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE PROBLEM IS HAPPENING THE WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH ACTIVES BUT IT DOESN'T STAY ON SO THERE'S NO CODE FOR THE DEALER TO VIEW.

OUR SON WAS DRIVING ON 287 SOUTH IN NEW JERSEY AROUND ON 7-21-2019. IT WAS A HOT DAY. HE HAD BEEN DRIVING HOME FROM THE ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES. HIS SPEED WAS JUST UNDER 70 MPH IN THE MIDDLE LANE WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR WOULDN'T MAINTAIN ITS SPEED. THE CAR SLOWED DOWN AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE MADE A SOUND LIKE IT WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE. THE RED THROTTLE WARNING LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. HE PULLED OVER SAFELY AND STOPPED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. HE WAITED ABOUT 10 MINUTES TO START IT AGAIN... WHEN HE TURNED THE ENGINE BACK ON THE RED LIGHT WAS OFF AND HE DROVE HOME SLOWLY IN THE RIGHT LANE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE NEXT DAY WE TOOK IT TO THE JEEP SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THEY TRIED THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES AND COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, AND WE TOOK IT HOME. WE ARE SCARED, HOWEVER, TO DRIVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY NOW!

WHILE I WAS PARKING IN MY APARTMENT COMPLEX PARKING SPACE, THE CAR ACCELERATED ITSELF SO DRASTICALLY WHILE I WAS NOT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL. I HIT THE BREAK SEVERAL TIMES AND COULD NOT STOP THE ACCELERATION. THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING WHEN I TURNED IT OFF. THIS WAS A VERY SCARY EXPERIENCE AS NO ONE EXPECT THE CAR TO ACCELERATE ITSELF. JUST BY LOOKING AT THE PICTURE YOU CAN NOTICE HOW FAR THE CAR WENT, HOW MUCH DAMAGE IT CAUSED BY THIS STRANGE ACCELERATION AND YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW FAST THE CAR ACCELERATED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL ICONS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO LOSE SPEED. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND TRAVELED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT CONTINUED DRIVING TO THEIR DESTINATION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING; HOWEVER, AN APPOINTMENT WAS SCHEDULED WITH TRONCALLI CHRYSLER JEEP (818A ATLANTA RD, CUMMING, GA 30040). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,000.

WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM, ANTI-SKID BRAKING SYSTEM, AND OR THE COMBINED OPERATION OF THESE SYSTEMS FOR STABILITY CONTROL, ENGAGED INTERMITTENTLY AND UNEVENLY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO PULL TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER. THIS HAS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY FIVE TIMES UNDER THREE DIFFERENT DRIVERS ALL AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED AND UNDER DRY ROAD CONDITIONS. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, THERE WAS AN AUDIBLE NOISE (LIKE A VIBRATION SOUND) OF THE BRAKES BEING AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED AND A PULSING IN THE BRAKE PULL. THE SYSTEM HAS ENGAGED ITSELF WHILE THE GAS PEDAL WAS BEING APPLIED AT HIGHWAY SPEED ON DRY PAVEMENT. IMMEDIATELY UPON THE SYSTEM'S APPLICATION I MOVED MY GAS PEDAL FOOT TO THE BRAKE WHERE AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES I COULD FEEL THE PULSING IN THE PEDAL. THIS SITUATION IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD. WHEN IT OCCURS IT BOTH STARTLES THE DRIVER AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER. THE SYSTEM IS DEFINITELY APPLYING UNEVEN BRAKING TO THE WHEELS TO CAUSE THE SWERVING. WE HAVE DISENGAGED THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM IN ORDER TO DRIVE THE JEEP IN A SAFE MANNER. HOWEVER, IT REQUIRES THE DRIVER TO DISENGAGE EVERY TIME YOU START THE VEHICLE. AT PRESENT EACH DEALER HAS BEEN NONRESPONSIVE IN TAKING ACTION TO CORRECT THIS VEHICLE PROBLEM, THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. EACH TIME THEY SAY THAT THEIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM IS NOT INDICATING ANY PROBLEMS.

WHENEVER I HIT A BUMP (RANGING FROM SMALL POT HOLE TO LARGER POT HOLE) ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 60+ MPH, MY CRUISE CONTROL WILL SHUT OFF BY ITSELF. SPEED DECELERATES VERY QUICKLY AND I HAVE TO GET IT UP TO SPEED QUICKLY TO AVOID GETTING REAR ENDED. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR JUST OVER A YEAR AND IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME I HIT ANY KIND OF SMALL BUMP AT AN ACCELERATED SPEED. STARTED HAPPENING AROUND 5000 MILES ON JEEP AND STILL DOES IT AT 17000 MILES.
