2012 Kia Sorento Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2012 Kia Sorento, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I am filing this complaint regarding a sudden and unexpected engine failure in my 2012 Kia Sorento LX equipped with the 2.4L Theta II engine. Vehicle Information: Year: 2012 Make/Model: Kia Sorento LX Engine: 2.4L Theta II VIN: [XXX] While driving, my vehicle experienced a sudden engine failure and lost power, leaving the vehicle inoperable. This occurred without warning. The vehicle received routine maintenance, including regular oil changes, and the failure was not due to intentional neglect or misuse. I am concerned because this vehicle is equipped with the Kia Theta II 2.4L engine family, which has been associated with previous recalls, investigations, settlements, and numerous consumer complaints involving engine seizure, premature failure, stalling, and safety concerns. I understand my specific VIN may not currently fall within an active recall; however, my vehicle has experienced the same type of catastrophic engine failure reported by other Kia owners with similar engines. I am concerned that vehicles outside current recall VIN ranges may still be experiencing the same defect. An unexpected engine failure while driving creates a serious safety concern due to the potential for sudden loss of power and increased risk to occupants. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether additional 2012 Kia Sorento vehicles equipped with the 2.4L Theta II engine may be affected and whether Kia's current recall population adequately addresses the known engine failure concerns. I have also contacted Kia requesting that they review my vehicle, authorize a no-cost diagnostic evaluation, and determine whether the engine failure is related to known Theta II engine defects. The downhill break control (DBC) and the traction control system is is engaged and eliminated in the dash. It causes smoke or steam to come from under the hood after it is driven. This is the second time this issue has happened. I spent over $3,000 and six months getting this fixed last time. If there is not a recall on these things it should be recalled and fixed without me having to pay for it again. I believe it should have been covered the first time it happened.

I had taken the Kia Sorrento to a local shop to get an oil change, and Mavis tire had discovered that the rear suspension and rear subframe were severely corroded with rust and I was told that the car is unsafe to drive. I had noticed as well that my brakes would not normally stop when I go to press them as a bit of a kickback and the traction sensors and ABS sensors and emergency brake sensors would go off and on for no reason.

Also I now have a loud knock in my motor I understand this should fall under the extended 15 yr 150k warranty; 2012 Kia vehicles (specifically the Sorento) with V6 engines are covered under major safety recalls for engine failure and fire risks. The primary issue involves metal debris from manufacturing that can cause premature engine bearing wear, stalling, and fire. You should check your VIN on the NHTSA site or Kia's recall page to confirm, as these recalls are still active.

The low-beam headlights frequently burn out, approximately every 6 months. Upon inspection by multiple repair shops, the wiring harnesses have been found to be blowing the bulb yet each shop has replaced with a variety of parts. The suspicion is the wiring and power source are causing issues. Each side of the vehicle has had the wiring harness replaced with the right side being replaced twice and currently in need of a third replacement. The initial replacement was in 2018 and most recent replacement was 2023. The headlight will flicker on and off intermittently before the bulb or wiring harness blow. There is no predicting when this will occur which leaves the driver at risk of losing one or both headlights, needing immediate repair for safety and to avoid a potential ticket from the police.

There was a recall listed online 9/2023 for HEUC hydraulic electronic control unit. [XXX]. I called Kia in September the day I saw and they said a letter would come out and part would be available for the recall soon. I waited. I called again in November 2023. Still no fix or letter. I called again in January then 4/2024 still no letter or part to remedy the problem. I'm tired of waiting and very scared to drive my car. I’m hearing now that the part might not be available until July 2024??!? This is completely unacceptable. That is 11 months driving a car that could catch on fire??!? And obviously it was a problem long before the recall actually happened or else there wouldn’t have been a recall needed. A serious recall and no remedy?!? How many people have to die to make them fix the problem??!! I’m scared to drive my car. Scared to park it because a fire could happen even if you are not driving the car?! No one wants to buy my car since there is a recall and I couldn’t get what it is worth to me either now. This is a serious problem. Now I hear that fixing the fuse is only a bandaid that the real problem is being disguised because it is a more costly repair vs just a fuse. Brake fluid could leak and cause engine fire?! Even an O-ring could leak and cause fire. O-rings can rot over time anyway. I can’t believe Kia has gotten away with this and for this length of time! Unbelievably scary. They said wait until you smell smoke or some light will come on? Well my son has no sense of smell so I have to trust that some light will come on and give him enough time to get out in time? That is the remedy of this serious problem??? Or go outside and find the car had caught on fire in my yard and then catches the house and all the neighbors houses on fire! How many lawsuits are just waiting??? Is this just a numbers game to them??? How many cars have to blow up? How many lives lost?? How many houses catch on fire?!?? Geez Kia! Fix this problem and don’t just bandaid it! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFOR

On June 6, 2026, while driving home, the vehicle suddenly began smelling strongly of gasoline and burnt rubber. Within seconds, thick black smoke became visible in the side mirrors, followed immediately by white smoke pouring from the front hood and into the passenger cabin through the air vents. As I attempted to pull over to safety, the vehicle completely stopped responding. The brakes failed to operate, the engine stalled, and the steering wheel locked completely. We were barely able to bring the vehicle to a stop. Immediately upon exiting, visible flames erupted from underneath the driver's side of the vehicle and out of the front hood. The engine compartment and motor burnt completely. The safety of the driver and front passenger was put at extreme risk of death or severe injury. Because the brakes and steering locked up simultaneously while the cabin filled with smoke, we almost lost the ability to safely exit a moving vehicle that was actively catching fire. Furthermore, at no moment prior to or during the failure did any warning lamps, check engine lights, or diagnostic messages illuminate on the dashboard. There was absolutely zero advance warning from the vehicle's safety systems. The fire originated from a catastrophic fuel system failure, specifically matching the known issues of the high-pressure fuel pump leak. The vehicle is a total loss and is currently located at a tow yard. It is fully available for inspection upon request.Local police responded to the scene and generated an incident log number. A corporate claim has been opened directly with KIA but as of today, no inspector from the manufacturer or insurance has been sent out.

This morning the panoramic sunroof on our 2012 Kia Sorrento spontaneously exploded. Shattered and chunks of safety glass came down on us. My son and I sustained superficial injuries (I sustained laceration over left eye and on left hand) - he has a lump on the right side of his skull. When we pulled over the glass was also on the rear portion of the roof. Nothing struck the vehicle. There was no vehicle/truck in front of us for potential debris. Open sky above. It sounded like a gunshot before the glass exploded over us.

I OWN A TWO-WHEEL-DRIVE MODEL 2012 KIA SORENTO WITH A 2.4-LITER FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. IT HAS LOSS OF POWER DUE TO A SUDDEN FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION; AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DOES NOT CHANGE GEARS AND HAS A WHIRRING/WHINING NOISE. THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS CORRECTLY BETWEEN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. SHIFTING INTO 3 THE RMPS BEGIN TO INCREASE BEYOND NORMAL LIMITS AND SHIFTING INTO 4TH IS SO DELAYED THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE FAILING. AT 35 MPH, THE RPM'S RAMP UP TO 4500 AND CONTINUES TO CLIMB. BY 45 MPH IT CAN BE AS HIGH AS 6500 RPMS. THE SUSTAINABLE RPMS IN THIS VEHICLE ARE CONTINUOUSLY 3500 TO 4500 RPMS AND IS QUITE LOUD. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MY LOCAL KIA DEALER 4 TIMES. ON TWO OCCASIONS, THEY KEPT IT FOR MORE THAN A WEEK AND ALWAYS TELL ME THAT THIS IS HOW THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE 4TH TIME IT WAS IN THE SHOP, ANOTHER 2012 SORENTO WAS BROUGHT IN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. TWICE THIS ISSUE HAS NEARLY CAUSED A WRECK WHEN I WAS PULLING OUT FROM A STOP SIGN, PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, AND NOT HAVING THE POWER TO GET PAST 35 MPH; PUSHING THE RPMS TO 4500+. TRAVELING UP SMALL GRADES IS DIFFICULT AT BEST LET ALONE TRAVELING STEEPER HILLS/CRESTS AND GRADES. I FEAR THIS WILL CAUSE GREAT DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE OR WORSE, CAUSE A FATAL CRASH WITH ME AND MY CHILDREN. OTHER VEHICLES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO MY LOCAL DEALER FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND I AM CERTAIN OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. PLEASE REVIEW THIS ISSUE. THANK YOU. *TR

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM AN E-MAIL SENT TO BIG O TIRE CUSTOMER SERVICE (TBC CORP) ON JUNE 26/2014 WE OWN A SET OF 4 DEFECTIVE COOPER 107H DISCOVERER LSX PLUS TIRES PURCHASED FOR OUR 2012 KIA SORENTO EX SUV ON NOV. 29, 2013 FROM BIG O TIRES STORE #6171 IN CONIFER, CO. THEY BALANCED AND MOUNTED THE TIRES. THEY DID NOT HAVE TIME TO PERFORM AN ALIGNMENT, SO FIRESTONE IN EVERGREEN, CO (11/29/14) ALIGNED THE VEHICLE. IN LATE APRIL, 2014 WE NOTICED A LOUD RUMBLING ROAD NOISE. WE HAD ANOTHER ALIGNMENT PERFORMED AND ALSO TOOK THE VEHICLE TO PEAK KIA IN LITTLETON, CO WHO DETERMINED THAT ALL ALIGNMENTS WERE WITHIN KIA SPECS, FOUND NO NOISE WITH THE VEHICLE ON THE RACK AND ADVISED US THAT THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO BIG O TIRES IN CONIFER. THEY ADVISED US TO HAVE THE CAMBER ADJUSTED MORE AND IF IT COULDN'T, TO INSTALL A NON-KIA AFTER MARKET PART WHICH WOULD ALLOW THE FURTHER CAMBER ADJUSTMENT. WE HAD THE ALIGNMENT ADJUSTED AGAIN. THE NOISE GOT LOUDER. KIA REINSPECTED THE TIRES, TOOK IT FOR ANOTHER ROAD TEST AND REVIEWED THE ALIGNMENT RECORDS AND AGAIN THE KIA SERVICE MANAGER CONCLUDED THAT THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO BIG O TIRES IN CONIFER TO SEEK RESOLUTION. THE MANAGER STATED THAT OUR SHOCKS AND STRUTS WERE BAD AND HIS LEAD MECHANIC STATED THAT WE NEEDED THIS AFTER MARKET PART TO ALLOW THE CAMBER TO BE FURTHER ADJUSTED. AT THAT POINT WE ASKED TO SPEAK WITH A REGIONAL OR DISTRICT MANAGER WHO COULD ASSIST US. WE WERE REFERRED TO COOPER TIRE. COOPER TIRE, TOLD US THAT THESE ARE PRIVATE LABEL TIRES MANUFACTURED BY COOPER FOR TBC AND TO SPEAK WITH TBC AS THEY HANDLE ALL WARRANTY CLAIMS. TBC THEN TRANSFERRED OUR CALL TO BIG O CUSTOMER SERVICE. AS I MENTIONED TO [XXX], MY WIFE AND I ARE REALTORS AND WE PLACE CLIENTS IN THIS VEHICLE EVERYDAY.
