Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE

Apr 12, 2004
45,267 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, A STRESS CRACK CAN DEVELOP IN THE PLASTIC FUEL TANKS.
The risk: CRACKS WHICH CONTINUE TO PROPAGATE CAN ULTIMATELY RESULT IN SIGNS OF LIQUID FUEL FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHEN FILLING THE TANK, PARTICULARLY IF OVERFILLING IS ATTEMPTED. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 15, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-800-637-6837.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED A RECALL LETTER WAS RECEIVED IN EARLY 2006; THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN IN FOR REPAIR. THEN A SECOND LETTER WAS RECEIVED AND THE VEHICLE DID HAVE A FUEL LEAK, THE DEALERSHIP WAS ALERTED AND AN APPOINTMENT WAS MADE. THE DEALERSHIP BEGAN TO PERFORM THE RECALL WORK. THE CONTACT WAS ALERTED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS DAMAGED WHEN THE TANK ASSEMBLY WAS TAKEN OFF THE VEHICLE AND NEEDED TO BE ORDERED, BUT WOULD BE REPLACED UNDER THE RECALL ALSO. THE DEALERSHIP THEN CALLED THE CONTACT BACK AND STATED THE VIN FOR THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED AND NEITHER COMPONENT WOULD BE INCLUDED. THE CONTACT ACQUIRED THE VIN FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER THAT DETERMINED THIS WAS NOT AN ACCURATE VIN AND THERE WAS NO RECORD OF THIS RECALL. THERE IS NOT AN NHTSA RECALL NUMBER, BUT THE NUMBER ON THE LETTER IS B156. UPDATED 07/03/06. *JB

THE SEAT BELT ANCHORS (BOTH DRIVER, AND PASSENGER SIDE) HAS BEEN DAMAGED, DUE TO RE-OCCURING RUST PROBLEM (WHERE THEY ATTACH TO THE VEHICLE) WHICH MFGR REPAIRED ONCE, BUT REFUSES TO ONCE AGAIN, STATING THE RUST IS A COSMETIC CONDITION. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO OBTAIN AN ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR, HOWEVER WHEN I SUBMITTED SEVERAL (PER REPS. REQUEST, THE CLAIM WAS DENIED., NOW THAT ONE MOUNT HAS BECOME COMPLETELY UNATTACHED FROM THE VEHICLE, THE COMPANT STATES THEY WONT REPAIR THE FAILURE AS THE VEHICLE IS NOW 1 YEAR OUT OF ITS COROSSION WARRANTY). I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE RUST/ SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW! THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF THESE VEHICLES IN NORTH AMERICA, HOWEVER, EVERY VEHICLE HAS THE ISSUE OF MAJOR RUST IN THE LOWER DOOR SILL AREA WHERE THE SEAT BELT ANCHOR IS LOCATED! ADDITIONALLY, THE FUEL TANK ON THIS VEHICLE HAS RUSTED THROUGH, AND IS NOW LEAKING. THE TANK IN THIS VEHICLE, IS THE SAME PART (AND PART NUMBER) INSTALLED IN THE 1987-1992 LAND ROVER- RANGE ROVERS WHICH WAS RECALLED IN 1995-1996 BY THE NTSHA

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
