2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Powertrain (other) Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials. Every record below is an owner-reported complaint about the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque submitted to NHTSA — not a confirmed defect, not a recall and not a manufacturer bulletin. 14 reports on file name it.

My car shifts into neutral while I’m driving. This is the same issue that I see recalls for but it’s stating that my car is not effected. Also, the rear suspension makes a loud grinding noise for no reason. It’s weird because other 2014 Land Rovers have these exact same recall warnings and my vin number comes up clear on the internet. This vehicle only has 45k miles on it.

Our 2014 Land Rover Evoque has a gear knob (gear shifter) located on the console. The gear knob changes by itself from drive, to neutral, to park. Dangerous! We identified this as part of a safety recall and took it to the dealer for repair. They updated the software and sent us on our way. After the same issue occurring several times, we took it back to the dealer at which time the stated we need a new transmission for over $17,000!!! The vehicle last showed only 35,000 miles! We have begged and pleaded our case with the dealer and repeatedly with Land Rover USA with no satisfactory resolution.

IT IS KNOWN THE 2014 RANGE ROVER/EVOQUE HAS A TERRIBLE AND REPEATED PROBLEM WITH THE TURBO /SUPER CHARGER OVER BOOST CONDITION. IT COSTS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO REPAIR. THIS IS DUE TO A FAILED DESIGN WITH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AS RANGE ROVER CAME UP WITH A NEW DESIGN AFTER 2014. *TR

RECALL P091 - OUR VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL HOWEVER IT SUFFERS FROM THE SAME DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE. THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING, EVEN DOING 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY. IT APPEARS TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, WITH THE DASH SAYING "GEARBOX FAULT" AND THE GEAR SHIFTER LOCKING UP. THE CAR NO LONGER REVS AND WE HAVE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS AND WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES, INCLUDING WITH A SEMI TRUCK ON THE FREEWAY. LANDROVER HAVE DONE FIVE (5) FAILED REPAIR ATTEMPTS VIA TWO SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS. THE PROBLEM REMAINS UNRESOLVED. WE HAVE REPLACED THE GEARBOX AND TURBO AT LANDROVERS SUGGESTION OF THIS BEING THE ISSUE; THE CAR WAS NOT FIXED BY THIS. WE BELIEVE THAT THE CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THIS CAR IS A DEATHTRAP AND LANDROVER ARE REFUSING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WE HAVE 14 FAILED REPAIRS ON THIS VEHICLE IN TOTAL, WITH LANDROVER SUGGESTING WE PAY FOR A 15TH REPAIR AT A COST TO US OF ALMOST $30,000. THIS WOULD BE THE SIXTH (6TH) REPAIR ATTEMPT ON THIS SAME ISSUE ALONE. THE CAR IS RIDDLED WITH NUMEROUS OTHER ISSUES. WE HAVE MULTIPLE VIDEOS OF THIS ISSUE TAKEN OVER SEVERAL BREAK DOWNS DUE TO THE SAME ISSUE AS THE RECALL. THIS HAS HAPPENED OVER A DOZEN TIMES, USUALLY WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION, HOWEVER IT HAS HAPPENED UPON STARTING THE CAR, DRIVING SLOWLY ON STREETS, AND DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 70MPH. WE HAVE ALL OF THE REPAIR RECORDS DOCUMENTING THIS BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY TO UPLOAD HERE.

ON FEBRUARY 10, 2018, WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, THE ERROR MESSAGE "GEARBOX FAULT" CAME ON. AT THE SAME TIME, THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER ALTHOUGH THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB WAS STILL IN THE "S" POSITION. I SAFELY PULLED OVER AND SWITCHED OFF THE ENGINE. AFTER THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB HAD RETRACTED, I STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN BY PRESSING THE START/STOP BUTTON. I WAS UNABLE TO MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB OUT OF THE "P" POSITION. AFTER REPEATING THIS PROCEDURE SEVERAL TIMES, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO TURN THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB INTO "S" AGAIN, ALLOWING ME TO DRIVE AWAY. THE ALMOST EXACT SAME EVENT HAPPENED AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 11, 2018. I HAD TO PULL OVER AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE WAS THAT I COULD MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB INTO THE "S" POSITION ON THE FIRST TRY AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE. LATER THAT DAY, THE ERROR MESSAGE "GEARBOX FAULT" CAME ON AGAIN WHEN I STARTED THE ENGINE IN A PARKING GARAGE. AS HAPPENED THE DAY BEFORE, I NEEDED TO RESTART THE ENGINE REPEATEDLY IN ORDER TO TURN THE GEAR SHIFT KNOB OUT OF THE "P" POSITION (I HAVE FILMED THIS INCIDENT WITH MY PHONE; FILE SIZE TOO BIG TO UPLOAD). FURTHERMORE, I ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEM IN DECEMBER 2016 AND JANUARY 2017 WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ROADS. IN BOTH CASES, I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR AND INFORMED THE SERVICE ADVISOR OF THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM APPARENTLY STILL PERSISTS AND HAS SO FAR HAPPENED A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 RANGE ROVER EVOQUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHIFTED GEARS INDEPENDENTLY. ON ONE OCCASION, THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK GEAR AND INTO REVERSE, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO A CURB. AS A RESULT, THE TIRE BLEW OUT AND ALSO CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SOFTWARE UPDATE TO THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENTER HIGHWAY FROM STREET TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE EVOQUE 2014 WOULD NOT ACCELERATE BUT RATHER REV AT VERY HIGH RPMS FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS AND THEN JARRINGLY SLIP INTO NEXT GEAR. THIS OCCURRED ON 6 OCCASIONS, ALWAYS ON THE HIGHWAY AND OFTEN AS CARS AND TRUCKS RAPIDLY APPROACHED AND HAD TO SLOW BEHIND ME OR SWERVE TO FREE LANES. I WAS TOLD SEVERAL TIMES BY THE DEALER THAT THIS WAS LIKELY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM AND IN AN EMAIL: "A COUPLE OF WEEKS AFTER INSTALLING THE LATEST SOFTWARE FOR YOUR TRANSMISSION, THE FACTORY HAS REQUESTED ALL DEALERS TO SUSPEND THE INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTWARE. THEY HAVE NOT GONE INTO DETAIL ON WHY BUT I ASSUME THE SOFTWARE HAS NOT COMPLETELY OR ONLY PARTIALLY CORRECTED THE INTENDED REPAIRS" THIS HAS ME VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE RELIABILITY AND SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
