2006 Lexus IS Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Lexus IS, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

My dash and door panels are sticky and crumbling to pieces. Also, my door handles aren't working on the car. Every time I open the door the handles are stuck on the driver and passenger side. Also, my floor mats are constantly wet and I'm not sure why. I don't want it to get worst and build mold or start to rust.

My dashboard is melting and I understand that there was a campaign to resolve this that ended in 2016. I bought the vehicle in 2019 and it has only gotten worse to the point that the dashboard has a sheen to it that causes a glare on the interior of the windshield when the sunlight hits it, making visibility very difficult.

NHTSA ID 11732524 · filed Apr 20, 2026

The dashboard glares when it is sunny outside and at night when cars are driving past on the other side, this is a huge safety issue as it impairs visibility. The dashboard is also very sticky

There is a common issue with these makes and models with the drivers side knee air bag having issues with connecting which cause the SRS light go on the dashboard. I called Lexus corporate office and local dealer and they said there was a recall but it expired in 2020. From the research i did, this was a small window and there shouldn’t have been an expiration on the recall for something that is a safety hazard. Because of this, they are charging thousands for this issue that has affected hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

My 2006 Lexus IS350 is subject to NHTSA Recall number 16V340, for passenger airbag replacement. According to the diections on the NHTSA website shown in the following link: [XXX] The dash pad needs to be removed to access the airbag and perform the repair. Ive contacted my 3 local Lexus dealers and was told in various ways that they do not remove the dash to accomplish the repair but instead just remove the glove compartment and associated parts to access the airbag. I wanted the dash replaced (it was cracked) when the old dash was removed to do this recall repair. SInce the dealers do not actually remove the dash, I was told this was not possible. One dealer told me that for an extra $350, the service dept. would do the repair according to the above linked instructions. I have notified Lyndss Tor at [email protected] as well as Toyota Quality Compliance [email protected] and recieved no reply. I hope the NHTSA can enforce the above linked instructions so that the airbag replacement can be conducted in a proper and safe fasion. Engine

Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.

reports

From owner reports, verbatim

The vehicle is burning engine oil at an increasingly severe rate, with the manual stating that burning 1.1 quarts every 600 miles is normal. This consumption is excessive given the 5.5-quart capacity and the requirement for expensive full synthetic oil, causing frequent and costly top-offs. This poses a safety risk due to the potential for engine damage or failure if oil levels are not closely monitored. Some owners have had the issue inspected, and Lexus has acknowledged the problem. However, they have stated that repairs require replacing components costing multiple thousands of dollars just for parts, leaving many owners without a feasible solution. This problem is widespread, with numerous reports of similar issues in online forums ( [XXX] ]). A thorough investigation and a more customer-friendly resolution are needed to address this design flaw and ensure reliability and safety. This is happening on the lexus is250 as while as the 350 the loose bolts could cause the VVT gear housing and sprocket to separate and result in the engine stopping while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Lexus GS350 vehicles manufactured June 19, 2006, through July 12, 2011; and model year 2006-2011 Lexus IS350 vehicles manufactured May 27, 2005, through July 13, 2011; and model year 2010-2011 Lexus IS350c vehicles manufactured November 25, 2009, through July 19, 2011. These vehicles, equipped with the 2GR-FSE engine, use bolts to secure the housing and sprocket of the Variable-Valve Timing (VVT) system gear assembly. These bolts could become loose due to abnormal impacts generated within the gear assembly immediately after a cold start-up.

THE PROBLEM IS A PREVIOUS TSB ON LEXUS'S WEBSITE CALLED 9LC SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY. THE STEERING IS VERY UNSAFE WITH RANDOM WANDERING BETWEEN LANES AND IS VERY NOTCHY WITH RAPID MOVEMENT ONCE A CERTAIN ANGLE IS REACHED. IT HAS A DEAD ZONE OF ABOUT 20 DEGREES ON EACH SIDE AND EVERY IMPERFECTION IN THE ROAD CAUSES THE CAR TO WANDER BUT THE STEERING IS NOT GIVING ANY FEEDBACK TO INDICATE ITS WANDERING OUT OF THE LANE YOU JUST HAVE TO WATCH THE EDGES OF THE LANE AND CORRECT IT CONSTANTLY. 6 LEXUS DEALERSHIPS WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND END UP COSTING BE 5000 +DOLLARS TRYING TO FIX THE PROBLEM REPLACING THE SUSPENSION, BALLJOINTS, LOWER CONTROL ARMS, RACK AND PINION + ECU, INNER/OUTTER TIE RODS AND AN INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. NOTHING HAS RESOLVED THE PROBEM AND THEY CAN'T SEEM TO FIX IT OR DIAGNOSE IT. THEY JUST SAY TRADE IT FOR A NEWER ONE. THERE ARE MANY IS250/350 OWNERS BETWEEN 2006 AND 2009 THAT ARE AFFECTED BY THIS AND MANY HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS ESPECIALLY CAUSED BY LONG HWY RAMPS AND EXITS IN WHICH THE STEERING BINDS TO ONE SIDE AND YOU HAVE TO VIOLENTLY CORRECT IT OR IT WILL HIT THE CURB OR WANDER INTO ANOTHER LANE EXTREMELY UNSAFELY. THIS IS NOT A COMFORT ISSUE, IT IS PURELY A HIGH LEVEL SAFETY CONCERN AS THERE IS NO REMEDY AND LEXUS DEALERSHIPS AND CORPORATE REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM AT ALL. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS. I THINK IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO OTHER DRIVERS. I DRIVE A HONDA ACCORD AND TOYOTA CAMRY AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS WITH EITHER OF THEM AND THEY HAVE OVER 220K MILES EACH. I HAVE VISITED 10 INDEPENDENT SHOPS AS WELL AND GOT 10 ALIGNMENTS FROM DEALERSHIPS TO PERFORMANCE SHOPS AND NO ONE IS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHY THIS IS HAPPENING OR HOW TO FIX IT.

After having our car in the local dealerships shop to fix recalls and a Very hard jerking of the car when slowing to 8mph thinking it was the ABS accutator, that unit was replaced and system bled and tested we picked the car up and before we got 100 feet away from the shop our car still had the same problem. After much talking with a lexus forum group I now believe based on their experiences and testing myself it's a Hard 2nd to 1st gear downshift ! and through my investigating, this is a common issue among lexus transmission between years 2006 - 2013

THERE IS A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE BRAKES. WHEN STEPPING ON THE BRAKE BEFORE COMING TO A FULL STOP THERE IS A PUMPING NOISE. FROM THE FRONT ENGINE AREA. THE BRAKES LOCKED UP ON ME WHEN I WAS PARKED AND TRYING TO START THE CAR AND I WAS UNABLE TO START THE CAR. I PUMPED THE BRAKES AND TURNED THE WHEEL AND IT STARTED. WHEN SITTING STILL AT A LIGHT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE NOISE FROM THE FRONT ENGINE AREA GETS LOUDER. THE SOUND IS A LOUD, KNOCKING, IDELING SOUND. IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS STUCK, LIKE THE CAR IS TRYING TO RUN PROPERLY BUT CANT BECAUSE SOMETHING IS STOPPING IT. THIS FEELS LIKE AN ABS SYSTEM ISSUE. I HAVE HEARD THAT OTHER LEXUS OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS SAME MAKE AND MODEL. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO. THIS IS AN ACROSS THE BOARD ISSUE AND IS AFFECTING WAY MORE THAN JUST A FEW CUSTERMERS.

THE CONCERN I HAVE FOR MY LEXUS IS 250 IS THAT 3 MAJOR SAFETY RECALL REPAIRS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED BY THE DEALER. IT FEELS UNSAFE TO DRIVE TO DATE AS IT HAS ELECTRICAL ISSUES THAT HAVE CAUSED IT TO LOCK UP WHILE DRIVING. A PROBLEM WITH THE STABILITY CONTROL, STEERING AND ACCELERATION MOST NOTABLE IN THE RAIN. TODAY I LEARNED OF THE TAKATA INFLATOR RECALLS. I BELIEVE THIS MODEL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN WHOLE FOR A SAFETY RECALL.
