What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Lincoln Town Car, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Want to report similar problem others seem to be reporting. When starting the car you hear 5 chimes/beeps repeating five times. The airbag light remains lit the entire time. On extended trips the chimes/beeps comes on again roughly every thirty minutes. Being directly linked to the airbag I’m surprised to find that this has yet to be recalled especially since many other towncar owners are reporting the exact same problem. I discovered that others were having similar issues when I was looking for a replacement seat belt because ours is sluggish to retract, you have to help it back to starting position.
AS SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED, MY 2006 TOWN CAR HAS HAD THE ORANGE ILLUMINATED AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH , ALONG WITH THE 5 CHIMES OVER AND OVER. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS, AND I'M SHOCKED TO SEE HOW PREVALENT IT ACTUALLY IS. SHAME SHAME LINCOLN.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.

SEATBELT SENSOR ON OUR 06 LINCOLN TOWN CAR FAILED AND REPLACEMENT COST TO REPLACE THE SENSOR IS VERY PROHIBITIVE. I READ MANY COMPLAINTS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE, SO I BELIEVE FORD/LINCOLN SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO RECALL AND REPLACE SAID EQUIPMENT.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
WHEN THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED THE CAR KEPT WANTING TO ACCELERATE. I HAD TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND PUT THE CAR IN N THEN TURN IT OFF. I WAS STOPPING AT A LIGHT. THIS HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE WITH THIS VEHICLE.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
When the foot was on the brake in stopped position, the accelator kept revving at high level. The only way to correct it the problem was to turn off the vehicle.
WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY, THERE WAS AN UNCOMMANDED MOVEMENT OF THE FOOT PEDAL ADJUSTMENT. THE PEDALS RETRACTED AWAY FROM MY FEET TO THE MAXIMUM STOP FURTHEST AWAY, WHICH PUT THEM OUT OF MY REACH AND RENDERED IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKES OR ACCELERATOR PEDALS. THIS NEARLY CAUSED A LOSS OF CONTROL ACCIDENT, HAD I NOT DISENGAGED MY SEAT BELT AND SLID FORWARD UNDER THE DASH TO REACH THE PEDALS TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ABLE TO USE THE CONTROL SWITCH TO MOVE THE PEDALS BACK INTO POSITION.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

From owner reports, verbatim
Fuel Tank Strap broke leaving only 1 strap to hold fuel tank in place. Multiple complaints filed but no recall. What are you waiting for? Someone to die in a fire? This needs to be addressed with a nationwide recall.
THE FUEL RAIL ASSEMBLY DEVELOPS PINHOLES IN IT AND GASOLINE FUEL LEAKS ON THE MANIFOLD AND ENGINE AND CAN START A CAR FIRE. THE FUEL RAIL ASSEMBLY HAS FAILED ON A LOT OF THESE CARS. THE FUEL RAIL ASSEMBLY FAILS ON ITS OWN. THERE IS NO WEAR AND TEAR ON THIS IETM. FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE.

VEHICLE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING AT 50 MPH. VEHICLE RESTARTED AFTER 20 MINUTES, WAS EVALUATED AND NO FAILURES COULD BE FOUND. *TR
MY PARENTS BOUGHT THE CAR AS A CERTIFIED / PRE-OWNED WHEN IT WAS 6 MONTHS OLD. WITHIN THE PAST SIX MONTHS THE TOWN CAR WILL SUDDENLY TRY TO ACCELERATE, (OR THE ENGINE WILL RUN UP TO THE REDLINE ON THE TACHOMETER.) IT WILL LITERALLY SPIN THE BACK TIRES WHILE BOTH THE DRIVERS FEET ARE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. WE ARE CONTACTING THE DEALER THIS WEEK. THIS IS GETTING MORE AND MORE OFTEN. *TR

UPON DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE AIR BAG LIGHT WOULD COME ON....AND THE SEATBELT ALARM WOULD SOUND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. SO I TOOK THE CAR INTO ALLAN VIGIL FORD TO BE CHECKED. THEY TOLD ME MY SEAT BELT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, WHICH THEY SAID THEY HAD TO PULL THE DASH OUT TO GET TO THE PROPER PARTS. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR WAS $594.27......THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER 9, 2013...AT WHICH TIME I CARRIED IT BACK TO ALLAN VIGIL AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THEN THE PASSENGER SIDE SEATBELT WITH THE SAME ISSUE..... THEY REPAIRED IT AT THE COST OF $630.88......I FEEL THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED BY FORD, AT NO COST TO ME...BECAUSE UPON MY FURTHER INTERNET SEARCHES FOUND THIS WAS AN ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON SEVERAL YEARS WITH THE SEATBELTS...OF THE 2006 LINCOLN TOWNCARS. ALSO I FEEL I SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN MORE CONSIDERATION DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY HUSBAND RETIRED FROM FORD WITH 35 YEARS SERVICE. PLEASE RESPOND . *TR
2006 LINCOLN TOWN CAR, FRONT RIGHT TIRE, COOPER CS4 TOURING, NEW 4/28/09, 10,275 MILES, WENT FLAT DURING 45 MILE DRIVE TO WORK. NO EVIDENCE OF PUNCTURE. SIDE WALL SCORED FROM DRIVING ON RIM OF WHEEL. WHEEL FOUND TO HAVE CORROSION, ALSO FOUND CORROSION ON ALL FOUR WHEELS AT FORD DEALER; 1/12/2010, LH FRONT WHEEL DEVELOPED SLOW LEAK DUE TO CORROSION AROUND RIM OF WHEEL; WHEEL CLEANED AND SEALED WITH DOUBLE BEAD SEALER; TIRE DEALER AND FORD DEALER, 2/2/10, BOTH RECOMMENDED FOUR NEW WHEELS. *TR

ON THE PREVIOUS DAY I HAD REPLACED THE LEFT SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT BULB TWICE WHICH DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A SIMPLE FIX FOR A BURNT OUT BULB. TURNS OUT THE ORIGIONAL BULB WAS NOT BAD AT ALL. TOOK CAR TO DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE A LIGHTING MODULE ($659.25 PART) NOT REPAIRABLE, THAT HAD TO BE PROGRAMED ($239.63 FEE) BY DEALER BEFORE BEING REINSTALLED. THIS MODULE ALSO AFFECTED MY BRAKE LIGHTS WHICH I WAS TOLD WERE NOT WORKING. IF I HAD BEEN OUT ON THE ROAD WHEN THIS OCCURED INSTEAD OF MY LOCAL TRAFFIC AREA I THINK IT COULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE. I FEEL THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY SITUATION SINCE I NEVER KNEW MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING AND ALSO NOT BEING ABLE TO GET MY HEADLIGHT TO WORK. WHAT IF BOTH HEADLIGHTS HAD GONE OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED BECAUSE OF THIS MODULE. THIS SITUATION ALSO PUT ME AS CAR OWNER INTO THE POSITION OF NOT BEING ABLE TO FIX A SIMPLE HEADLIGHT PROBLEM AND TURNING IT INTO A MAJOR CAR REPAIR ($905.61 BILL). I FEEL THE USE OF MODULES TO CONTROL HEADLIGHT LIGHTING IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. IT SHOULD NOT COST NINE-HUNDRED DOLLARS TO FIX A HEADLIGHT PROBLEM. I FORESEE DOWN THE ROAD A WHOLE LOT VEHICLES WITH THESE MODULES HAVING NO LIGHTS. SO MUCH FOR THE MODERN ERA. GIVE ME THE OLD STYLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WITH JUST WIRE AND FUZES. PART NO: FMC 7W1Z 13C788 A PROCESSOR - LIGHTING. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 LINCOLN TOWN CAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAS ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN FIVE TIMES WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH. THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED ON OCTOBER 8, 2007. HE PLACED THE GEAR IN NEUTRAL IN ORDER TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN AND, ON OCCASION, HE WOULD HAVE TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWICE AND THE DIAGNOSIS INDICATED FAILURE CODES FOR THE POWERTRAIN, CONTROL MODULE, AND (THE DEC) ELECTRONIC CONTROL. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER ON NOVEMBER 1, 2008. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY MAY BE UNABLE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. A REPORT WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD CALL THE DEALER. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT HE WOULD RECEIVE A CALL FROM THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,311 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 32,390.
OUR 2006 LINCOLN TOWN CAR, WITH 3,500 MILES, HAS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY DEFECT. WHEN ON AN INCLINE, FACING DOWNHILL, THE CAR WILL ROLL FORWARD WHILE IN REVERSE. IN ADDITION, IF THE CAR IS FACING UPHILL IN DRIVE, IT WILL ROLL BACKWARDS. THE CAR WILL REACH SPEEDS OF 6 MPH ROLLING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF WHAT GEAR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS IN. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR ACCIDENTS TRYING TO EXIT PARKING LOTS. FORD STATES THEY SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED THIS INTO THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO HAVE IT PASS EMISSIONS TESTING (THEY REDUCED THE IDLE SPEED AND ALTERED THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER). THEY HAVE PUT THEIR CUSTOMERS (SENIORS) AT RISK. *TR
