1994 Mazda Protege Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 1994 Mazda Protege, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

DRAINS BATTERY, HAVE UNHOOK TILL TEMPERATURE RISES.

NHTSA ID 714070 · filed Oct 29, 1999

I WAS AN HOUR AWAY FROM HOME WHEN MY HEADLIGHTS STARTED GOING DIM, AND WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULDN'T WORK ON HIGH SPEED. AFTER THE CAR DIED WE WENT AND GOT A NEW ALTERNATOR AND PUT ON IT, AFTER THAT, IT DROVE FOR ABOUT 5 MILES AND THE HEADLIGHTS STARTED GOING DIM AND THE CAR WOULD CUT IN AND OUT. THE NEXT DAY WE PUT A NEW BATTERY ON IT AND I DROVE IT HOME, WHEN WE TOOK IT TO A SHOP, THEY REBUILT THE ALTERNATOR, AND I DROVE THE CAR FOR A FEW DAYS AND IT STARTED DOING THE SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN. SO WE PUT ANOTHER ALTERNATOR ON IT AND SO FAR IT HAS WORKED, BUT WE ARE AFRAID IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN BECAUSE I HAVE ALSO SEEN SMOKE COME OUT OF THE HOOD AFTER HAVING THOSE PROBLEMS. *AK
