Low Pressure Fuel Supply Hose Leak
On November 27, 2018, Daimler Vans USA, LLC submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing two engine compartment fuel hose connection defects in certain model year (MY) 2016 and 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles (Recall 18V-837).The recall scope includes approximately 12,383 Metris vehicles manufactured from March 2, 2015 (SOP) to March 15, 2017.The defects may result in leakage from an upper hose connection that feeds the high-pressure fuel pump or from a lower hose connection of the fuel transition hose between the underbody fuel line and the Shrader valve.The upper connection defect was caused by thermal aging of the hose material (Veritas hose), resulting in a loss of elasticity over time.The thermal aging of the hose leads to a progressive reduction of sealing performance, which is most evident at low ambient temperatures.The problem was corrected by changing to a hose with better material properties (ContiTech hose).The lower connection defect was caused by a manufacturing process problem, where the hose clamp may have been installed using an incorrect tool.The recall remedy involves replacing the upper and lower hoses and clamps, as necessary, and ensuring proper installation. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE18-002 to investigate nine (9) complaints (VOQs) reporting incidents of gasoline odor or leakage in nine (9) model year (MY) 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris vans (subject vehicles).Eight (8) of the VOQs indicated that the problem occurred in cold ambient temperatures, either during engine warm-up after a cold start or after the vehicle had been parked and shutoff. Two (2) of the consumers have indicated to ODI that the problems were diagnosed by dealer service technicians as the upper hose connection defect.As part of PE18-002, ODI analyzed information related to the incidents reported to the Office by consumers and analyzed the information provided by Daimler Vans in response to ODI's information request letter.The fuel hose leak field experience shown in the Failure Report section of this resume all involve vehicles covered by the Daimler Vans recall.This Preliminary Evaluation is closed with recall 18V-837.VOQs associated with the investigation: 10936026, 10936184, 10991876, 11054491, 11057992, 11063437, 11063829, 11104437, 11138922, 11139024, 11140844, 1150262, 11152201.

I am filing a formal safety complaint regarding my Mercedes-Benz Metris serviced at Mercedes-Benz Coconut Creek (Florida) under Recall VS2LAS561 – 9789VMCRC (Customer Service Case #20781216). On February 12th, I delivered the vehicle for recall service. It was returned on February 23rd without the recall properly completed. Invoice no. 328897 – tag T9514 lists replacement of four Continental 235/55 R17 tires and installation of four PRS sensor repair kits. These items were not installed. The tires were placed in the trunk, and only three used sensors are present; one wheel has no sensor. Additionally, the dealership provided 235/55 R17 tires, while the vehicle is homologated for 225/55 R17. Supplying non-approved tire sizes represents a safety concern. Since purchase (from the same dealership), I have reported tire pressure irregularities and abnormal lateral tire wear. During the most recent service, no tire rotation was performed despite documented uneven wear. Two weeks prior to the recall visit, I experienced a highway tire blowout while traveling with my family. When attempting to install the spare tire, I discovered the wheel lock removal key had been removed during a prior Mercedes service and not returned. I was unable to change the tire and required roadside assistance. The lug bolts had to be forcibly removed by an external shop, potentially damaging wheel components. The dealership has not properly resolved these safety-related issues. I do not feel safe operating this vehicle under current conditions. I request investigation into: • Recall execution compliance • Tire size compliance with vehicle specifications • Improper documentation of uninstalled parts • Removal of required emergency equipment (wheel lock key) These issues present potential safety risks to vehicle occupants and other road users. I have had 2 major and costly repairs/issues with the engine and its oil system. These are detailed below. I have also received multiple collision or seatbelt dash alerts when no one is near my vehicle whatsoever. Unexpected repairs back-to-back due to defective parts/design: Oil pump control valve and harness replaced. Cost: $1,499. Replaced crankcase ventilation hose assembly. Cost: $3,293.37

Dealer says that Power Steering control unit/steering rack needs to be changed. Looks like same recall was there(17V-595) but my vin number is not in Mercedes system to be fixed. Happens when park. Steering was not working, van needs to be towed. Can you check if that should be part of recall?

This Mercedes Metris is my wife's primary vehicle. She had the electric power steering stop working twice in six weeks. Each time the vehicle became barely controllable. Both times it happened on curvy mountain roads and she was barely able to keep control of the vehicle and is now afraid to drive it. We took it into the local Mercedes dealership twice and spent over a $1,000 the first time to remedy the problem. The second time they recommended replacing the steering rack at a cost of $5,000. We were six years into a seven year warranty with 92,000 miles on the vehicle. The dealership pulled a fast one on us and managed to work their way out of having to cover the warranty repairs. I investigated the problem, have found there are other Metris's with the same issues and am starting to believe it is not the steering rack, but more likely the steering servo motor, steering control module or the steering control software. As such we haven't been able to have it repaired as it appears the dealership has not thoroughly investigated the failure and ducked out of the warranty responsibility. Mercedes should be on top of this, as it's a serious safety hazard which endangers the lives of the occupants of our Metris and the surrounding vehicles. When the steering fails the dash turns red with warnings and it stops working within a couple of seconds. It also activates fault code P0635

ASSYST PLUS service reminder appears earlier than expected due to vehicle operating conditions Complaint The ASSYST PLUS service reminder appears earlier than expected. The customer or dealer may report that the vehicle did not reach the starting maintenance interval shown in vehicle documentation, option coding, sales literature, or the Owner's Manual. The service reminder may appear significantly earlier than anticipated even though no faults are stored and no malfunction is present in the vehicle. The remaining distance and remaining time continue to decrease normally until the service reminder is displayed. Cause This condition is not caused by a malfunction of ASSYST PLUS. ASSYST PLUS is a dynamic maintenance management system that continuously evaluates vehicle usage and opera-ting conditions to determine maintenance requirements. The starting maintenance interval specified by variant coding represents a maximum interval that may only be achieved under favorable operating conditions. Actual maintenance intervals may be significantly shorter depending on vehicle use. Vehicle operating conditions such as driving conditions, engine load, engine operating conditions, idling, short-trip operation, environmental influences, oil aging, and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration activity may reduce the maintenance interval from its starting value. These conditions may accelerate engine oil aging through increased soot loading, fuel dilution, moisture accumulation, and additional engine operating stress. As a result, the remaining distance and remaining time until the next service may be reduced from the starting maintenance interval. Remedy Do not replace any parts. A due service must be assumed if the maintenance data calculated by ASSYST PLUS indicates that service is required.
STRUCTURE:BODY
Acoustic Warning or message occurring when a closed sliding door is not recognized Complaint Customer may state the warning message or indicator accompanied by acoustic tone alerting the sliding door is ajar when the door is completely closed Cause There are several reasons that lead to the failure occurring: - Mechanical damage through bending when loading and unloading - Worn contact plates --> After detachment of silver plating, the coper plate is corroded - Movement of sliding door/body when driving --> Contact pins do not always make contact with contact plate --> Central locking system fault message in instrument cluster Remedy In a problem case, replace contact switch for vehicles with +T50/+T55/+EL9 or contact plate with A4478201903. Remember to check the fit of the sliding doors and make any necessary adjustments as per AR72.16-S-1023E (447/448) and AR72.16-D-1023TS (907/910). FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
OM642 DPF Filter Cracked or Broken Complaint Vehicle will not start or exhibits noisy exhaust. Check Engine Lamp (CEL) is on. Multiple control unit communication and system faults may be present, including but not limited to: 134800, 134900, 11B300, 11EC00, 15E100, 155700, 162500. Additional events codes may include: 134300, 102200, 163400, 16CE00. In many cases, multiple unrelated faults are stored due to electrical disruption from wiring damage rather than indivi-dual component failure. Cause The DPF filter is cracked, broken, or leaking, allowing hot exhaust gas to escape from the exhaust system. Depending on the location of the break or leak, hot exhaust gas may be directed toward the main wiring harness and/ or the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) dosing valve assembly. This heat exposure can result in: • Internal melting of wiring insulation within the harness • Short to ground conditions and loss of communication between control units • Damage to the dosing valve and/or heated AdBlue line Damage to the wiring harness may not be visible externally, as the outer tape can remain intact while the internal wires are melted and fused together. Remedy Inspect the DPF assembly for cracks, separation, or leakage. Do not proceed with further diagnosis or component replacement until the exhaust leak source has been identified and confirmed. If any damage is found, replace the DPF filter assembly. Based on the location of the failure, inspect all components in the path of the exhaust leak, including the dosing valve assembly and main wiring harness. The wiring harness must be opened in any area exposed to the exhaust leak to visually inspect the individual wires. External inspection alone is not sufficient to determine harness condition. Repair or replace any damaged wiring in accordance with approved repair procedures. Replace any dosing system components that show signs of heat damage. Failure to identify and repair all heat-affected components will result in repeat faults or no-start conditions.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Check engine light on and FC P146264 stored in engine and fuel pump control units Complaint Check engine light active and FC P146264 Temp. and pressure sensor B4/15 is stored in Engine control unit and Fuel pump control unit. Cause Software parameter in Fuel pump control unit. Remedy Update fuel pump control unit (FSCU) to software version A0009024488 A0009030664. Clear fault codes and check for any additional symptoms.
POWER TRAIN
Complaint Transmission control unit Y3/8n4 (fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS)) not listed in quick test and/or no communication possible with VGS. Cause Transmission control unit Y3/8n4 Remedy For vehicles with 722.9 transmission: Ensure LI54.15-P-057373 is performed before replacing any component parts. After processing and complying with the above document(s): 1. Perform an ignition reset on Y3/8n4 (VGS) 2. Inspect transmission connector for loose connections, damaged wiring or pins and any other concerns. If communication with the VGS cannot be established, the complete valve body ('electrohydraulic controller unit (EHS)') must be replaced. Installation of a VGS repair kit is not permitted in this case as it is not possible to transfer the necessary valve characteristics without communication with the original control unit.
ENGINE
Check engine light illuminated - Fault code current P04D-B79 The crankcase ventilation system is interrupted. Complaint: Check engine light on. Fault code P04DB79 is current in the engine control module (N3/10). Cause: Open circuit or high resistance to crankcase vent line contact Remedy 1. Check the electrical connector for S208 vent line contact switch. Refer to attached photo of connection location. 2. Ensure the bolted connection is secure and bolt can be torqued (9Nm). 3. Check continuity from vent line connection to ME control unit. Repair wire if damage is found.
