What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

From owner reports, verbatim
Hard to steer car, power assist not working, doors do not lock
I am the owner of a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. Several weeks ago the power steering on the vehicle quit. This was not the result of the power steering pump. The linkage in the steering system had ceased, causing the vehicle to be dangerously unsteerable. I have had this repaired at a cost of $575 dollars. I believe this is a safety issue that need immediate investigation and a safety recall. I contacted Ford Motor Company and was sent to Chat contact Shakura who gave me the Corporate runaround. We were lucky as this happened on a side road at low speed. If it had happened on an Interstate with speeds of 65 to 80 MPH I feel this could have resulted in a major accident. I should also point out this steering item is in Ford Crown Victorias and more than likely in Lincoln Continentals. Please advise and contact me with questions. Thank you in advance as this need to be resolved.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
I started Mercury with foot on break like normal. Shifted into reverse. Car accelerated backwards at full speed. Brakes did not stop car. Attempted to shift into neutral but went into drive instead. Car accelerated forward at full speed with my foot still on break. Car hit metal post and tree knocking them down and dragging the tree 50 to 60 feet before stopping with my foot still on the break. Car had stopped accelerating. I turned off the ignition. This unintended acceleration had happened before. Two different dealers attempted to fix the problem. Both of them thought they had been successful but it happened again. Previously, applying the brakes stopped the car, but not this time. Someone could have been injured severely or killed.
UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION WHEN CAR IS STOPPED AT A LIGHT, CAR LUNGES FORWARD. ON ONE OCCASION THE CAR WAS BURNING RUBBER . VERY DANGEROUS AND SCARY. HAVE TO SHUT OFF IGNITION WHEN THIS HAPPENS. HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES. MY WIFE REFUSES TO RIDE IN THE VEHICLE.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim

The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer. The vehicle had been towed to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but became a recurring failure. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 240,000.

DRIVER SEATBELT WAS REPLACED (BAD MAYBE) AND AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON IMMEDIATELY AFTER SEAT BELT WAS REPLACED WIPERS TURN ON BY THEMSELVES AND WILL NOT TURN OFF.
A SPRING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT BUCKLE FAILED, CAUSING THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TO ILLUMINATE AND DEACTIVATE THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IN THE EVENT OF A FRONT IMPACT REQUIRING AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. THE SEAT BELT AND BUCKLE WAS REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED. THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED EVERY TIME THE DRIVER FASTENS THE SEAT BELT. THE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ON AND WOULD NOT GO OFF WHEN THE DRIVER FASTENS THE SEAT BELT. THE DEALER TRACED THIS TO A FAULTY SEAT BELT LATCH. FROM READING ON OWNERS' BLOGS OF THIS MODEL, OVER SEVERAL YEARS INCLUDING MY MODEL YEAR, MY PROBLEM DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A UNIQUE OR RARE OCCURRENCE. THE MOST COMMON CAUSES ARE WORN OR BROKEN SPRINGS ON THE SWITCH IN THE SEAT BELT LATCH. THE SWITCH IN THE SEAT BELT LATCH NOT RECOGNIZING THE DRIVER IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT WITH THE SEAT BELT FASTENED CAUSES THE LIGHT TO GO ON AND DEACTIVATE THE AIRBAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM FOR THE DRIVER. THIS SAFETY ITEM SHOULD BE A MODEL RECALL.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Head lights suddenly went out while driving at night causing near accident, happening frequently. Also, the gas tank leaks when I put gas in car, making it smell badly and making it dangerous if someone drops a cigarette near it.

PAINT PEELING WHINE FROM REAL DIFFERENTIAL
THE PAINT ON THIS VEHICLE HAS BUBBLED AND FELL OFF THE CAR, ALL OVER THE CAR IN VARIOUS PLACES. THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A PATTERN TO THE DAMAGE, EXCEPT WHERE THE WINDOW WASH SQUIRTS THERE IS SOME DISCOLORATION AND RUST. PREVENTATIVE MEASURES HAVE NO AFFECT ON THE PAINT COMING OFF AS MULTIPLE WASHES AND OR WAXES DO/ DID NOTHING TO PREVENT IT FROM CONTINUING. PART OF THE DAMAGE FOLLOWS A RIVET OR WELDING LINE ON THE HOOD WHERE IT IS WELDED TO BRACES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE HOOD, OTHER PLACES APPEAR TO BE HIGH WIND OR HIGH STRESS AREAS. THE PAINT FEELS FRAGILE , HAS NO RESISTANCE TO BREAKAGE AND APPEARS TO BE A WELL KNOWN DEFECT WHEN RESEARCHED. SANDING , RESURFACING AND REPAINTING HELPS SOME, BUT UNLESS THE WHOLE CAR IS REDONE IT IS UGLY AND VERY HARD TO CONTROL AND IT IS ALSO DISAPPOINTING. *TR
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.

PAINT PEELING WHINE FROM REAL DIFFERENTIAL
REAR AXLE AND BEARING NOISES. MARQUIS BOUGHT NEW. OWNER'S SON-IN-LAW NOTED MINOR BEARING NOISE IN REAR WHEN VISITING IN 2004. SON-IN-LAW RECEIVED CAR AFTER DEATH OF MOTHER-IN-LAW IN 2012, CAR HAD 24K MILES AT THAT TIME. NOTICED PRONOUNCED REAR END NOISE AT THAT TIME (A WHAA-WHAA-WHAA MATCHING SPEED CHANGES). LEFT REAR AXLE AND OUTBOARD BEARING FOUND TO BE PITTED AND WERE REPLACED BY INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. RESEARCH BY OWNER INDICATES THAT AXLES FOR THIS, AND OTHER SIMILAR MERCURY AND FORDS HAD FACTORY AXLES INSTALLED THAT HAD NOT BEEN PROPERLY HEAT TREATED. NOW, NOV. 2014, AT 43.4K MILES THE RIGHT AXLE IS STARTING TO EXHIBIT NOISE SIMILAR, SO REPAIR IS UP-COMING. WILL EXAMINE NHTSA RECALL 04V328000 AS NOTED HERE IN OTHER COMMENTS POSTED.
