2008 Mercury Mariner Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Mercury Mariner, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

2008 MERCURY MARINER. THE VEHICLE SPORADICALLY AND INTERMITTENTLY BRAKES WHILE DRIVING AND ACCELERATING. THIS WAS A REPORTED ISSUE MANY YEARS AGO ON THESE CARS BUT FORD NEVER ISSUED A RECALL EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE A NUMBER OF BRAKING ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IF YOUR BRAKES WITHOUT WARNING LOCK UP. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER AND FORD CORPORATE AND THEY WERE OF NO HELP. I ALSO FILED AN INCIDENT REPORT WITH FORD CORPORATE #CAS31601808.

THE CAR WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD (A CITY STREET, NOT A HIGHWAY) AND A TRIANGULAR LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH, ALONG WITH A MESSAGE TO STOP SAFELY. THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN AND I HAD TO COAST INTO A PARKING LOT. THIS HAD HAPPENED PREVIOUSLY AND I HAD PAID A DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE HYBRID COOLING PUMP. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT THIS PART HAD BEEN RECALLED AND WAS REIMBURSED BY THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE ORIGINAL REPAIR. THE SAME PART HAS FAILED AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, BUT UPON CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER, THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE THE PART AGAIN.

THE CAR IS REVING HIGH AND ACCELERATING POORLY. THEN THE RED TRIANGLE LIGHT TELLING ME TO STOP SAFETY NOW COMES ON CAUSING ME TO PULL OVER AND SHUT CAR OFF. I TURN THE CAR BACK ON AND IT DRIVES BUT WITH SAME ISSUES. LOOK ON THE CARCOMPLAINT.COM WEBSITE FOR TSB-09-19-12 AND TSB-08-24-5 WHICH DETAIL WHAT MY CAR IS DOING AND MAKES IT APPEAR LIKE THERE IS A COOLING PUMP RECALL. FORD JUST TOLD ME THERE ARE NO RECALLS LISTED FOR MY VIN THOUGH. THE FREQUENCY OF WHICH THE RED TRIANGLE LIGHT COMES ON IS INCREASING THIS MONTH. IT WAS EVERY FEW MONTHS AND NOW IT IS WEEKLY-DAILY.

MY 2008 MARINER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT PROPERLY WHEN COLD (WINTER) OR TOO HOT. THIS ALSO AFFECTS THE IDLE WHEN STOPPED. WHEN VEHICLE TRIES TO SHIFT UP, IT WILL ONLY SHIFT IF I LET OFF THE GAS, THEN THE TRANSMISSION SLAMS INTO THE HIGHER GEAR. THE VEHICLE WILL HESITATE WHEN TRYING TO USE PASSING GEAR TO PASS OTHER VEHICLES. THIS HAS LED TO SOME CLOSE CALLS/NEAR MISSES WHEN TRYING TO OVER-TAKE VEHICLES. FORD SAYS THEY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL BUT HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL. FORD SAYS THEY CAN FIX IT WITH MY MONEY. *TR

IN FEBRUARY OF 2009 (AT 41,214 MILES), MY 2008 MERCURY MARINER STARTED JERKING WHEN I WAS DRIVING AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN I GASED. I TOOK THE CAR TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT WITH TRANSMISSION FAILURE. SINCE THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY THEY PERFORMED A "TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL". THREE YEARS LATER, FEBRUARY 2012, MY CAR STARTED HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN, TRANSMISSION ISSUES. ACCORDING TO THE PAPERWORK, IT WAS NOTED "TRANSMISSION/CONVERTER SLIPS AND TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKED". I WAS RELUCTANTLY TOLD BY A SUPERVISOR AT FORD HEADQUARTERS THAT SOME 2008 MARINERS DID INDEED HAVE TRANSMISSIONS DEFECTS BUT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT KNOWN TO BE AFFECTED AND BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY WILL NOT ADDRESSED IT WITHOUT ME PAYING $4062. I HAVE CALLED FORD HEADQUARTERS AND THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ME WITH ANY DETAILS ON THE ISSUES WITH SOME OF THE MARINERS THAT WERE RECALLED. A CAR THAT HAS TRANSMISSION ISSUES TWICE WITHIN FOUR YEARS SOUND LIKE THERE IS INDEED A MAJOR DEFECT ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION PARTS BUT FORD IS NOT WILLING TO ADMIT IT. I AM SURE MY CAR (VIN) SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY HAZARD FOR MY FAMILY AND I. THIS CAR IS A LEMON AND FORD WAS WELL AWARE OF IT BUT REFUSE TO CORRECT THE MATTER. FORD SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND RESOLVE THE ISSUE THAT THEY WERE WELL AWARE OF INSTEAD OF MAKING THERE CUSTOMERS BELIEVE THAT IT IS NORMAL FOR A CAR TO HAVE TRANSMISSION FAILURE NOT ONLY ONCE BUT TWICE WITHIN FOUR YEARS. I WILL PURSUE THIS MATTER UNTIL I AM SATISFIED WITH THE RESULTS. UPDATED IVOQ 03/28/12 *TR

A COUPLE DAYS AGO I STARTED MY CAR AS USUAL BEFORE GOING TO WORK TO LET IT WARM DUE TO THE WEATHER. AS I STARTED BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVE I REALIZED MY STEERING WHEEL ISN'T MOVING LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO. I STOPPED AND TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON, THEN IT WAS FINE. NOW AFTER 2 OR 3 DAYS THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES AND VIBRATES AND A RATTLING NOISE OCCURS AT LOW SPEED AND CERTAIN POSITIONS WHEN THE WHEEL IS TURNED, OR EVEN AT A STANDSTILL POSITION. IT HAS RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THE FIRST TIME AND ALWAYS WHEN THE CAR STARTS. IT CAN BE STOPPED BY TURNING OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTARTING THE CAR. I'VE READ A LOT OF THE COMMENTS AND COMPLAINTS AND HAVE TO WONDER, WILL IT TAKE A DEATH BECAUSE OF THIS FOR FORD TO REALIZE WE'RE NOT MAKING THIS UP AND IT'S NOT DUE TO POOR OR LACK OF MAINTENANCE. *TR
