2015 MINI Cooper Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2015 MINI Cooper, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Lower Engine Support and Passenger Engine Mount damaged as per routine inspection by dealer in Feb2025. Never diagnosed before. Repair done by independent service center in Feb2025 and I have receipt of approximately 1K. Also, since 22feb2025, I am not able to add fuel to the tank because the pump stops constantly and causes spill of fuel. This can cause fire. Never happened before. Tried at least 4 different gas station and same result. Dealer charges over $200 to perform inspection/diagnostics. Not done yet. Repairs to fuel tank are in the thousands. No warning in the car dashboard for none of the issues. Car with less than 80k miles.
The contact owns a 2015 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that after the vehicle was taken to a local dealer for a routine oil change, the mechanic also determined that the valve cover gasket needed to be replaced and an unknown engine software needed to be updated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and the contact was advised to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim

The fuel filling nozzle turns off repeatedly while trying to fill the fuel tank and spills out causing a safety and environmental hazard, regardless of the pump being used. As a result, no fuel goes into the gas tank, instead it goes all over the car and the ground.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
On my 2015 MINI Cooper Hardtop 4 Door (VIN: [XXX]), the driver's side halogen headlight suddenly stopped working. When I attempted to replace the bulb, I discovered that the headlight connector/pig tail had melted on one side, one of the electrical wires had burned completely through, and there was a strong odor coming from the rear of the headlight assembly. This was not simply a burned-out bulb. The connector and wiring sustained heat damage that appears to have resulted from an electrical failure. Because of the melted connector, burned wiring, and strong burning small, I believe this created a potential fire hazard. It must be noted that there have not been any changes to the lighting or electrical system since purchasing my car and I am the first and only owner. I contacted my mini dealership and was informed that the connector is not available separately for my year, make, and model for my car and the only option is the purchase the entire headlight assembly. The cost for the assembly is $615 and while the exact charge for labor is not known at this time, from my experience, it will be between $200-$500. After researching his issue. I found reports from other MINI owners describing similar failures involved melted headlight connector and burned wiring on vehicles with halogen headlights. Based on these reports and my own experience, I am cornered this may represent a recurring safety-related defect rather than normal wear and tear. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can evaluate whether this issue warrants investigation. I have photographs documenting the melted connector, burned wiring, and resulting damage. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The sensors do not work. The car does not tell me when oil is needed, when my tires are low. No sensors work in the car. The dealer, Mini Of Edison, states FOUND INTERNAL HARDWARE FAULTS. But are stating its costs 2300.00 to fix. This is a huge safety issue.Ive been having to guess when my oil is low and when my tires are low. This has been going on since September 2023, the car was only bought in May 2023.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Selector lever wrongly not locked in park. Put up a code for transmission (egs). I believe it falls under the transmission control unit recall on mini coopers 2 door hardtop.
When refueling, nozzle kept shutting off, a gallon was pumped after nine attempts, also fuel erupted as the fill tube was filled with gas. reluctant to drive this car not knowing how much gas is in the tank. The needle shows less than 1/4 and miles remaining fluctuates between 80 and 110 miles. We are told that this problem exists in many mini automobiles, dealer has replacement gas tanks, but same problem exists Parking our Mini, indication of "roll back" is possible when car is parked. Shifter unit was replaced due to torsion spring.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Without any warning lamps,The vehicle started pulling left when the brakes were applied a certified mechanic looked at it and feels that is the due to a defective DSC/ABS control unit. The unit hasn't been otherwise inspected but is available for inspection
The proportioning value that controls brake function had a catastrophic failure and caused the brake calipers especially the left front to lock suddenly. The caused the left front wheel to lock and caused the car to pull hard to left and become difficult if not impossible to control. The car pulled hard left and risked the car moving uncontrollably into on coming traffic. The failed part was saved and is available for inspection. The safety of the driver(my wife) was put at risk during the loss of control of the car. Other cars in the area were also put at risk simply due to the loss of control of our car. The problem was confirmed by the independent service center. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to the dealership. The dealership thought the root cause was the brake master cylinder. This turned out not to be the case. The root cause was the failed proportioning valve. This caused the calipers to lock. The discs, rotors, calipers and proportioning value were replaced. There were no warning lights and the car had been taken for regular service at the dealership which was included in the purchase of the car. We were told that there is no warning light for a failure of this part.

While driving the rear view mirror suddenly tilted downward (drooped). What happened, was that the tension ring popped off. As it turns out, this is a known issue per internet Mini Cooper pages. On hot days the ring loosens and, since the design does not include anything to prevent the ring from sliding off, it does slide off, resulting in the rear view mirror drooping. I reinstalled the ring. This occurred again the next day. I ended up uninstalling the rear view mirror, reinstalling the ring and gluing it in place. Thus far this has held.

I MADE A RIGHT TURN FROM THE MAIN STREET, INTO THE PARKING LOT OF A STRIP MALL, THEN AN IMMEDIATE LEFT TURN, AND ANOTHER RIGHT TURN INTO THE RIGHT ANGLE PARKING SLOT. ALL THE WHILE HAVING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES, I STARTED TO SHIFT INTO PARK, WHEN IT WAS IN THE RIGHT SPOT. THE MINI INSTEAD COMING TO A STOP, REVVED UP, JUMPED THE CURB AND HIT THE STORE IN THE FRONT. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES REALLY HARD, ALL THE TIME BUT THE BRAKE PEDALS WERE LOCKED UP. IT WOULD NOT MOVE UP OR DOWN. SAT HARD ON THE FLOOR! WHEN THE TOW TRUCK CAME, THE BRAKES WERE STILL LOCKED UP AND THE GEAR WAS IN PARK AND COULDN'T BE MOVED FROM THERE. THE SEAT BELTS COULDN'T BE RETRACTED EITHER. MINI ENGINEER CLAIMS THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR AND I CAN SAFELY DRIVE IT AFTER THE BODY IS REPAIRED. I AM HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME WITH THIS CONCLUSION. THE CAR'S BRAKES AND GEAR WERE LOCKED UP, AND HAD TO BE LIFTED ON A FLATBED AND TAKEN TO THE REPAIR SHOP; I STILL MAINTAIN SOMETHING WITHIN THE CAR MALFUNCTIONED. *TR
I PURCHASED MY MINI COUNTRYMAN ON FEBRUARY 14, 2015 FROM THE LOCAL MINI DEALERSHIP. IN NOV-2014 MY SON WAS DRIVING OUR '05 MINI COOPER DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 55MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEERING STOPPED WORKING. HE WAS BARELY ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND GET IT TO THE SIDE OF INTERSTATE. HE WAS 17 YRS OLD AND IT WAS VERY HARD FOR HIM TO STEER IT AND GET OUT OF TRAFFIC. HE WAS EXTREMELY FRIGHTENED. WE THEN GOT THE CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP (NOT THE LOCAL MINI SHOP, SINCE THEIR LABOR RATE WAS TOO HIGH), WE HAD TO PAY $1,201.75 TO REPAIR THE STEERING. AFTER RECEIVING A LETTER REGARDING THE STEERING RECALL FROM MINI CORPORATE IN EARLY 2016, WE WERE TOLD TO CALL/GO TO THE LOCAL MINI DEALER AND THEY WOULD HANDLE THE CLAIM. AFTER SEVERAL CALLS, EMAILS, AND A PERSONAL VISIT TO THE KNOXVILLE, TN MINI COOPER DEALER, I HAVE GOT NOWHERE. THEY REFUSE TO HANDLE THE CLAIM (ONCE TELLING ME THAT IT HAD BEEN SUBMITTED TO MINI CORPORATE, BUT THEN IT TURNS OUT THEY ADMITTED THAT IT NEVER WAS SUBMITTED)... THEN MOST RECENTLY BASICALLY THEY TOLD ME TO LEAVE THEM ALONE. THEY WILL NOT GIVE ME PROOF THAT THE CLAIM WAS SUBMITTED (WHICH I AM GUESSING IT HAS NOT BEEN), AND NOW THEY WILL NOT ANSWER MY EMAILS. CAROL HWANG AT KNOXVILLE MINI HAS BEEN VERY RUDE AND UNCOOPERATIVE. THEY REFUSE TO GIVE ME A CONTACT AT CORPORATE, AS I'VE REQUESTED, TO CONFIRM THE CLAIM HAS BEEN SUBMITTED AND TO FOLLOW UP ON GETTING REIMBURSED FOR THIS REPAIR RELATED TO THE RECALL. WHEN I CALLED CORPORATE MINI, THEY SAID I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE LOCAL MINI SHOP. LOCAL MINI SHOP IN KNOXVILLE SAYS CORPORATE WILL HANDLE THE CLAIM. SO I AM GETTING NOTHING BUT A RUN-ROUND. THIS INCIDENT WAS VERY SCARY FOR US! MY SON COULD'VE BEEN KILLED WHEN THE STEERING WENT OUT. HE WAS TERRIFIED AND THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO GET HIT AND CRUSHED BY A SEMI TRUCK. THE WHOLE THING WAS AWFUL. NOW ALL I WANT TO DO IS GET REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR, BUT I CANNOT GET MINI COOPER TO COOPERATE. PLEASE HELP.

I GOT THE AIR BAD WARNING A FEW MONTHS AGO WHILE DRIVING THE SIGNAL WITH A LIL AIRBAG ON MY DASH BOARD. I CALLED THE DEALER TOOK IT IN AND THE DEALER SAID MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY DIDN'T CHECK TO SEE IF THIS ISSUE WAS A RECALL THEY JUST CARED ABOUT FIXING IT IF I PAID THEM. SINCE THEN I GET THE AIRBAG WARNING EVERY TIME THE CAR IS ON.
