Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Sep 19, 2006
2,941 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES BUILT ON WORKHORSE CHASSIS AND EQUIPPED WITH GM 8.1L V8 ENGINES, IMPROPER HARDENING DURING THE HEAT TREATMENT PROCESS CAN CAUSE THE FUEL RAIL PULSE DAMPER RETAINER CLIP TO FRACTURE, RESULTING IN INADEQUATE RETENTION OF THE DAMPER. IF THE DAMPER BECOMES LOOSE, FUEL COULD BE PUMPED BY THE FUEL PUMP INTO THE UNDER HOOD AREA.
The risk: IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FIRE COULD RESULT.
The remedy: WORKHORSE IS HANDLING THE OWNER NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY FOR THIS CAMPAIGN (PLEASE SEE 06V225). DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL RAIL PULSE DAMPER RETAINER CLIPS ON THESE ENGINES FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT WORKHORSE AT 877-294-6773 OR MONACO AT 1-800-685-6545.

The defect: CERTAIN MOTOR HOME CHASSIS BUILT ON WORKHORSE CHASSIS MAY HAVE BEEN EQUIPPED WITH INCORRECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFTS. THE SPLINE CAN STRIP WHILE THE STEERING WHEEL IS BEING TURNED.
The risk: THIS STEERING CONDITION COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: WORKHORSE IS CONDUCTING THIS RECALL (PLEASE SEE 06V148000) AND WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. OWNERS MAY CONTACT WORKHORSE AT 1-877-294-6773 OR MONACO AT 1-800-685-6545.

WHEN DRIVING ABOUT 30MPH I HIT A DIP IN THE ROADWAY. WHEN THE REAR WHEELS ENTERED THE DIP DEPRESSION, THE RESULT WAS THAT THE TAIL PIPE HIT THE ROADWAY AND WAS PUSHED UPWARDS INTO THE INSIDE OF THE BODY AT THE REAR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE UNIT. THIS RESULTED IN THE OPENING OF THE TAIL PIPE BEING UP AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE BODY PANEL WITH THE BODY PANEL MORE OR LESS BLOCKING THE EXIT OF EXHAUST GASES FROM THE TAILPIPE. THE CONSEQUENCE OF THIS WAS THAT THE RESULTING HEAT FROM THE TAIL PIPE CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGER TO THIS AREA OF THE MOTOR HOME. ONE OF THE STORAGE COMPARTMENTS WAS MELTED. THE ELECTRICAL CORD WAS DAMAGED AND HAD A HOLE BURNED IN IT. A LOT OF THE WIRING WAS BURNED AND MELTED. LIGHT FIXTURE WAS BURNED AND MELTED. THE INPUT BOX FOR CABLE AND SATELLITE CONNECTIONS WAS TOTALLY BURNED UP. TWO OF THE EXTERIOR DOORS IN THE AREA OF THE TAIL PIPE WERE BURNED AND DAMAGED. THE TAIL PIPE ITSELF BECAME DETATCHED FROM THE MUFFLER AND SUPPORTING BRACKET AND WAS SIMPLY DANGLING DOWN WITHOUT SUPPORT. I CURRENTLY HAVE THE UNIT AT AN RV REPAIR FACILITY SO THAT THE ABOVE DESCRIBED ITEMS CAN BE REPLACED AND REPAIRED. *TR THE DEALER STATED REPLACED LOWER TRIM, REPLACED TRANSFER SWITCH AND WIRING, REPLACED 2 REAR COMP DOOR AND TRANSFER SWITCH AND WIRING. UPDATED 10/26/07 *TR

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
