The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: FIFTH WHEEL TRAILERS. THE TRAILER PIN BOX STEEL STRUCTURE COULD FAIL AT THE WELDS OR TUBULAR STEEL STRUCTURE DUE TO FATIGUE.
The risk: THIS COULD LEAD TO SEPARATION OF THE STEEL TUBES COMPRISING THE GOOSENECK AND PARTIAL OR COMPLETE DETACHMENT OF THE PIN BOX CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TOW VEHICLE AND THE FIFTH WHEEL GOOSENECK STEEL STRUCTURE.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REINFORCE THE GOOSENECK STRUCTURAL STEEL ASSEMBLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 17, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NATIONAL RV AT 1-800-439-3653. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA), AN AGENCY OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT NATIONAL RV, INC. AND ITS HOLDING COMPANY, NATIONAL RV HOLDINGS, INC., HAVE FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY. NHTSA HAS BEEN ADVISED THAT OWNERS WHO WISH TO PURSUE CLAIMS RELATED TO SAFETY RECALL REPAIR WORK ON THEIR NATIONAL RV VEHICLES MAY FILE A PROOF OF CLAIM WITH THE UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE DIVISION. I WAS PULLING A 5TH WHEEL TRAILER, WEIGHING AROUND 13,000LBS. DRIVING ON I-25 AT 65 MPH, THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE GENERAL TIRE, MODEL AMERI*550AS ON THE TIRE. THE TIRE DID NOT BLOW OUT. I DID NOT REALIZE THE PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED AND WAS DRIVING ON THE BELT OF THE TIRE FOR SEVERAL MILES. HAD THE TIRE BLEW, THE TRAILER MAY HAVE FLIPPED CAUSING EXTENSIVE VEHICLE DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH. THE TIRE WAS INFLATED TO 75 PSI PRIOR TO DEPARTING ON THE TRIP.
