Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded
Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.
No recalls in our database for this model year
That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.

Reports submitted to NHTSA, shown in the owner's own words
I WAS DRIVING NORMALLY TO SCHOOL ALONG WITH MY BROTHER AND I NOTICED THAT THERE'S A VERY STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CAR DURING DRIVING. I STOPPED AT A SAFE PLACE TO CHECK AND I NOTICE THAT THERE'S GAS DRIPPING SLOWLY UNDER THE GAS TANK. IT STILL LEAKS AND IT SEEMS TO BE CONTINUING TO LEAK A LITTLE MORE. PARTS FOR THIS REPAIR ARE ESTIMATE TO $400+ EXCLUDING LABOR, AS THE GAS TANK IS ALSO LOCATED QUITE BEHIND LOADS OF SUSPENSION PARTS FOR THE REAR. *TR
DT: THERE WAS A SPLIT IN THE SEAM OF THE GAS TANK. THE SMELL OF GAS WAS STRONG IN THE GARAGE. THIS HAD BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT A WEEK. THE CONSUMER NOTICED A SPOT ON THE DRIVEWAY AND SUSPECTED THAT IT WAS GAS. THE CONSUMER'S HUSBAND HAD TAKEN A PIECE OF TISSUE AND DIPPED IT INTO THE SPOT AND DETERMINED IT WAS GASOLINE ON THE SPOT WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE DAY BEFORE. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THEY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, AND DISCOVERED A SPLIT IN THE SEAM OF A GAS TANK THE COST WOULD BE $1,200 TO FIX IT. THE CONSUMER FELT THAT SHE SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, WHO SAID THEY WOULD NOT PAY BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. NO REPAIRS OR CORRECTIONS HAD BEEN MADE. *AK (11/22/05) *SC
IF THE AIR CONDITION WAS ON WHEN THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE ENGINE SURGED AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD. *JB
BRIDGESTONE TURANZA T SIZE P20555R16, REPLACEMENT TIRES ON A NISSAN, 240SX, 1996. VEHICLE WAS WOBBLING. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER, AND THE DEALER STATED THAT LEFT FRONT TIRES BELT HAD SEPARATED. *AK BRIDGESTONE TURANZAT, DOT NUMBER Y78KPVB397. *SLC

12 VOLT BATTERY TESTING FOR IN-SERVICE VEHICLES SERVICE INFORMATION The following Service Information lists NNA procedural recommendations for establishing good connections while performing 12V battery testing. These recommendations are expected to promote uniformity during the connection process, therefore reducing the number of incorrect âTest with DCAâ and âReplaceâ results. HINT: If 12 volt batteries are allowed to discharge for a prolonged period of time, battery life may be drastically reduced. This condition may lead to premature battery replacement and customer dissatisfaction. IMPORTANT: ï· CPX-900 is now an accepted testing tool to use along with or in place of the DSS-5000 ï· CPX-900 operating instructions are found at: https://nissancpx900.midtronics.com/ ï· DSS-5000 operating instructions are found at: https://nissandss5000.midtronics.com/ ï· DCA-8000 is now a required testing tool to be used for all warranty replacement decisions. The DCA-8000 is also a more efficient charger than previously available, and will charge any available 12 volt lead acid battery safely and accurately as long as all precautions and inputs are made correctly. The DCA-8000 operating instructions are found at: https://nissandca8000.midtronics.com/

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
Complaint and recall counts across every year of this model
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
