What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Nissan Frontier, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
See attached document for complaint.
Whenever I fill ip the tank I get a fuel smell inside the vehicle. I do not overfill the tank and always stop filling when the fuel pump stops the first time. I have not been able to identify a leak and have not seen fuel leaking under the vehicle. The smell is strong for about the first 1/4 tank of use.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
2 months after purchasing the vehicle (with 98,410 miles) it started to shutter around 40 and 60 mph. At a little over 100,000 miles it began to slip in 5th gear (overdrive). It has been getting worse in the last 1,000s. Both Nissan or the local dealer are willing to offer any financial assistance.
I was at work, Which is 100% depended on my vehicle, as I work in the oilfield, I was out in the middle of nowhere, when I was getting back into my vehicle, I turned the key and the vehicle would not even turnover, I was forced to walk 5 miles to get to a job site that cell phone service to make a call for help, Took the truck to my mechanic, He said it was a transmission code coming up on his computer and that he was unable to fix, So I had to tow the vehicle a second time to Nissan in Grand Junction co. where they informed me that the Transmission and Radiator fluid has mixed together, Now I'm needing a new Transmission and coolant system at a price over $6000, They did let me know that this was a VERY common problem with this vehicle.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
See attached document for complaint.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking oil. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed that the valve cover gasket needed to be replaced. Additionally, the spark plugs needed to be replaced. The dealer later called the contact and informed the contact that the bank #1 and #2 cam sensors and the coil packs needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the dealer later called back and stated that the vehicle was making an abnormal sound and upon performing a diagnostic test, the dealer advised that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that while pulling out of his driveway, he noticed that the steering wheel was significantly loose. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they were not aware of that failure. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 111,000.
ON A CITY STREET, WENT TO PARALELL PARK AND NOTICED THE STEERING WAS STIFF. AFTER PULLING OUT, NOTICED STEERING HAD STAYED STIFF AND WAS HARD ENOUGH TO TURN THAT IT FELT LIKE THE STEERING HAD LOCKED. AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO BE LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC, HE INFORMED US THAT IT WAS A STEERING COLUMN SHAFT FAILURE AND IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL OF NISSAN, AND FOR US TO CHECK TO SEE IF THIS WAS UNDER RECALL AS IT SHOULD BE.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The truck has been stalling while driving or won't start. The ECM relay was recalled and was taken care of Thursday, February 19. However, the truck still stalls while driving and won't start at times. I've asked Nissan to look at the IPDM to see if there was any consequential damage, but they won't without paying a fee for a diagnostic test. This is a major safety issue that needs to be fixed. The recall was from 2010, but we have only owned the vehicle since 2024 and had no idea about the recall.
Truck will turn on once in awhile and I was told it is the ipdm module and that there's a recall on the part. What can I do to get the part sent to me since there is a recall and the mechanic told me that with a recall I can get the part sent to me at no cost to me
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
See attached document for complaint.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Frontier. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23E012000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVING WHEN CAME TO A STOP THEN DROVE CAR ENGINE REVVED UP. WHEN REACHED 20 MPH CAR DROVE FINE. ONLY HAPPENS WHEN CAR STOPS THEN GOES. TOOK TO SHOP SAID IT COULD COST ANYWHERE FROM 4500 TO 6500 TO REPAIR. I HAD TRUCK FOR ONLY 9 MONTHS AND AM STILL MAKING PAYMENTS. I CALLED JIM CLICK AUTO MALL AND THEY SAID SORRY NOT OUR PROBLEM. *TR
DRIVING ON BUSY ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 40MPH WHEN MY TRUCK STARTED TO SHAKE, I SLOWED MY TRUCK TO APPROXIMATELY 37 MPH, WHEN IT SOUNDED LIKE MY TRUCK EXPLODED. I COULD NOT STOP AND COULD BARELY TURN THE STEERING WHEEL ENOUGH TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC JUST TO SMASH INTO THE CURB WHERE I FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. THE DRIVE SHAFT CAME APART, GRABBING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE, WINDING IT AROUND ONE PART OF THE DRIVE SHAFT, LEAVING ME STRANDED WITH MINORS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WAITING FOR A WRECKER TO TOW MY TRUCK. HAD I HAVE BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE, DOING THE SPEED LIMIT (70MPH) WHEN THIS HAPPENED, MY CHILDREN AND I WOULD HAVE FLIPPED NOSE OVER TAIL, POSSIBLY BE STRUCK BY TRAFFIC AND SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. *TR
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN FRONTIER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN JERKING AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY AND BEGAN TO OVER HEAT AS THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS A CRACKED ATF LINE THAT RAN THROUGH THE ENGINE COOLANT CHAMBER, IN THE RADIATOR, WHICH CAUSED CONTAMINATION. AS A RESULT, THE RADIATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REBUILT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000.
2006 NISSAN FRONTIER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH FROM HOME, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP, WHERE AN INSPECTION REVEALED RADIATOR FLUID AND TRANSMISSION FLUID MIXED TOGETHER.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
ON 11/10/2018 WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY WITH NO WARNING LIGHT MY 2006 NISSAN STARTS TO LOSE POWER!!! I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY AND PULL INTO A GAS STATION TO CALL AAA TO TOW IT TO A MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION HAS COOLENT IN IT AND THE TRANSMISSION WILL NEED I BE REBUILT OR REPLACED WITH A REBUILT TRANSMISSION. HE SAID THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE COOLENT HOSE THAT WAS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. I NEVER GOT ANY WARNING LIGHT UNTIL AFTER THE TRANSMISSION FAILED.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 NISSAN FRONTIER THE TRUCK WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR BEING PRESSED AND THEN BEGAN JERKING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID IS WAS THE RADIATOR LEAKING INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND DESTROYING THE TRANSMISSION WHICH NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT THE DEFCT BUT HAS CHOSEN NOT TO FIX. IF I WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGH SPEED ON THE INTERSTATE AND THE TRUCK DID NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR AND STARTED TO JERK A COLLISION WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. THE FACT THAT NISSAN KNEW ABOUT THIS DEFECT AND CHOSE NOT TO INFORM ME OF THE PROBLEM CAUSES CONSIDERABLE ALARM.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN I GOT OUT OF COLLEGE THE FIRST THING I WANTED TO DO WAS TO BUY MY DREAM CAR. I HAD BEEN LOOKING INTO GETTING A TRUCK AND I WAS DEBATING BETWEEN MY NUMBER ONE CHOICE A NISSAN FRONTIER OR 2ND CHOICE TOYOTA TACOMA. I KNEW THE TACOMA WAS PROBABLY MORE RELIABLE IN TERMS OF MINOR PARTS YET I JUST LOVED THE DESIGN OF THE FRONTIER AND THEREFORE I BOUGHT ONE IN 2006 BRAND NEW. EVER SINCE IT HAS BEEN MY PREFERRED AND ONLY WAY OF TRANSPORTATION. I KNEW THAT MAINTAINING IT WAS IMPERATIVE THEREFORE WHEN IT CAME TO AN OIL CHANGE, CHANGE OF SUSPENSION TRUSTS, TRANSMISSION SERVICE, CHANGE OF SPARK PLUGS; IT WAS ALL DONE AT THE PROPER TIME. YET MY TRUCK STARTED GIVING ME ISSUES 4 MONTHS AGO WHEN IT WOULD SHAKE OR SHIMMER ON ROAD AND FREEWAY. DID SEVERAL TIRE ROTATIONS, DID SUSPENSION CHANGE, YET THE ISSUE STILL PERSISTED. IT ALL CAME DOWN TO A SCREECHING HALT WHEN I WAS GOING UP TO SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK FOR A HIKE WITH FRIENDS. MY FRONTIER ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTED LOOSING POWER AND THEN THE GEARS WOULD JUST NOT CHANGE. EVENTUALLY MY 'ENGINE SERVICE SOON' APPEARED AND WAS FORCED TO STOP OUR TRIP. HAD TO HIRE A TOW TRUCK TO BRING DOWN THE TRUCK AND UPON SCANNING I GOT A P1759 CODE. UPON RESEARCHING I COME TO FIND OUT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH NOT ONLY THIS LINE OF TRUCK BUT ALSO XTERRA AND TITAN BRANDS. YOU CANNOT BELIEVE MY DISAPPOINTMENT. IF IT WERE SOMETHING SIMPLE I WOULDN'T MIND BUT TRANSMISSION?!? REALLY?!? BECAUSE OF SOMEBODIES' MISTAKE WHEN IT CAME TO THE ENGINEERING OF THE TRUCK?!? AND TO FIND OUT NISSAN IS JUST IGNORING THE ISSUE. TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT AND FRUSTRATION! NOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR OUR SWEET GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ACTION SINCE THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A MAJOR CORPORATION IRRESPONSIBILITY AND ULTIMATELY.... GREED. BE WARNED ALL FRONTIER DRIVERS, YOUR TIME WILL COME.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN FRONTIER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGED WHILE DRIVING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE AXLE SEAL HAD LEAKED ONTO THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PADS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 68,000. UPDATED 09/21/12*LJ UPDATED 09/26/2012 *JS
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
Concern about the seatbelt notice. I have a constant blinking dash light about the passenger seatbelt!
THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEATBELT DOES NOT RETRACT CORRECTLY. I CONTACTED A LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND NISSAN AMERICA. THE DEALERSHIP GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE, WITHOUT SEEING THE TRUCK OF $100-$1500.00 TO REPLACE THE CURRENT SEATBELT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE, NOT BASED ON THE MILAGE/AGE OF THE VEHICLE. I WILL CERTAINLY LET ALL KNOW ABOUT NISAAN'S LACK OF CONCERN FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC WHICH CHOOSE TO PURCHASE THEIR CARS, NEW OR USED! NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. I HAD A HONDA ACCORD THAT WAS 20+ YEARS OLD AND HONDA REPLACED THE SEATBELT AND ASSEMBLY FOR FREE, BEING IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE!!!!!
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY FRIEND AND I WERE TRAVELING ON THE I-40E IN NEW MEXICO. HE WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK AND FEEL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL. HE WOKE UP AND OVERSTEERED AND CAUSED US TO CRASH MY TRUCK INTO THE RIGHT SIDE HIGHWAY DITCH AT ABOUT 70 MILES PER HOUR. WE HIT FIRST WITH THE FRONT RIGHT OF MY TRUCK AND THEN TUMBLED 3 TIMES SMASHING ALL SIDES OF THE TRUCK ESPECIALLY THE FRONT. WE HAD OUR SEAT BELTS ON SO WE WEREN'T EJECTED, BUT AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. MY DOG WAS IN THE BACKSEAT OF THE 4 DOOR TRUCK AND WAS EJECTED AND DIED SHORTLY AFTER. I SUSTAINED SEVERAL INJURIES TO MY FACE, HEAD, ARMS, SHOULDERS, AND BACK. *TR
WEATHER TURNED FROM RAIN TO ICY. SOUTH BOUND ON STREET THAT OVERPASS INTERSTATE. TRUCK SPUN AROUND SEVERAL TIMES FIRST IN SOUTH BOUND LANE HITTING GUARD RAIL ON WEST SIDE, WENT OVER THE CURB AND MEDIAN INTO NORTH BOUND LANE SPIN AGAIN BEFORE COMING TO REST AGAINST 4FT HIGH CONCRETE DIVIDER ON BRIDGE. THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG IS THE ONLY ONE THAT DEPLOYED. MY WIFE WAS IN PASSENGER SEAT. NO OTHER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THIS TRUCK HAD DUAL STAGE SUPPLEMENTAL FRONT AIR BAGS AND NISSAN AABS.. THANKFULLY OUR SEAT BELTS WERE PROBABLY WHAT PROTECTED US FROM BEING THROWN FROM THE TRUCK. AS I STATED ONLY THE AIR BAG IN STEERING WHEEL DEPLOYED. THIS SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO WITH ALL THE RECALLS GOING ON. I HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTICE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I WENT TO EMERGENCY ROOM THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY TO GET XRAY OF CHEST BECAUSE OF PAIN. MY WIFE WENT TO HER DR ALSO. *TR

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR WIPER REPAIR AND THE TECHNICIAN ATTACHED A COMPUTER TO THE VEHICLE AND THE COMPUTER TOLD HIM THE WIPERS WERE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE TECHNICIAN SAID HE COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT TURN THE WIPERS ON TO VISUALLY SEE THE PROBLEM AND DEPENDED ON THE COMPUTER FOR A RESOLUTION. THE SWITCH WAS REPLACED ($500.00) BUT THE PROBLEM REMAINED. A BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM <$700.00 PART>) WAS ORDERED PRIOR TO 25 NOV 2012 AND TO DATE 9 MAR 2013 HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED. I HAVE DRIVEN FOR 4 MONTHS OF RAIN/SNOW SEASON WITHOUT PROPER WIPER FUNCTIONING. THIS HAS BEEN UNSAFE FOR MYSELF AS WELL AS MY PASSENGERS AS WELL AS OTHERS ON THE ROAD.[XXX] @ NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS HAS NO ETA FOR THE PART, NO ANSWER AS TO WHY THE PART IS NOT AVAILABLE AND DOES NOT KNOW WHAT WILL BE DONE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE DELAY. *TR
PREVIOUS COMPLAINT 10226919. ON THURSDAY, MAY 8, I LEFT MY FRONTIER AT THE QUALITY DEALERSHIP IN TEMECULA AS DIRECTED BY THE COMPANY. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, A COMPANY INSPECTOR VIEWED THE WINDSHIELD DAMAGE AND DENIED RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFECTIVE MATERIALS. THEY COULD NOT REPLACE IT AND REFERRED A GLASS COMPANY. THIS IS AN ULTIMATE INSULT TO CONSUMERS WHO ARE DUPED INTO PAYING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR INFERIOR QUALITY MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP IN AMERICA. NO WONDER THE TURNOVER IN SALES AND SERVICE AT THIS DEALERSHIP IS EXCESSIVE. IN TWO YEARS AND MANY TRIPS WITH MINOR VEHICLE PROBLEMS, THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN RESOLVED WE ARE STILL CHARGED. I HAVE NOT SPOKEN TO THE SAME PERSON TWICE. REPEAT CUSTOMERS ARE TREATED LIKE SUCKERS. *TR
