What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Nissan Murano, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -Front Driver Seat and the rear subframe. Yes How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -Seat moves around while driving. The subframe is bad, which if it broke could be dangerous. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -No, my husband is my mechanic Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -No. They seat was like that when we bought the car in 2021. The subframe was noticed last night.
My drivers side seat started wobbling and it feels dangerous in case of any kind of crash. The other day I pulled into driveway and heard a pop and the side where the buttons are popped out and I cannot find one of them. The part where the buttons for seat adjustment just fell out and I pushed back but still afraid in case of collision. I have read on plenty of forums where the seat frame breaks. I am older and I cant afford to fix it but I am afraid to drive it
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
SUNVISOR NOT STAYING IN PLACE, FALLS TO IMPAIR VISIBILITY. BOTH SUNVISORS HAVE FAILED AND WILL NOT STAY UP, OR IN A POSITION. NISSAN IS NOT INTERESTED IN THE SAFETY OF ITS OWNERS/DRIVERS.
DRIVERS SIDE VISOR DROPS EVER TIME YOU HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD. IF YOU ARE NOT READY FOR IT, IT CAN BE A SAFETY ISSUE.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
drivers seat is not sitting right almost seems like it came unhinged. driving on a short distance Trip I noticed that every time I needed to turn and it the road was windy I could smell fuel and it seems like I was loosing gas as I was driving like it was punchard or spilling some how.. I'm no mechanic but as a pregnant woman I was absolutely nauseous from going only an hour away. also it seemed like I would periodically loose power and at one point actually had to pull over and let the vehicle air out and cool down. seems like the was a situation with the coolant as well had to replace the cap and it looks as though that had been a issue with the previous owner as well.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2006 NISSAN MURANO. WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND BEGAN TO SMOKE. THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE AND FLAMES APPEARED BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AS THE FUEL TANK EXPLODED THREE OR FOUR TIMES. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED FROM THE SCENE. POLICE AND FIRE REPORTS WERE FILED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,000.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Broken rear K Frame/Sub Frame. Vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and left the roadway after fishtailing in the rain. Towed to repair shop. Inspection of the rear suspension shows multiple premature catastrophic failures of the rear K Frame and or Sub Frame structure. Stabilization bar is completely broken from it's mount. Rear K Frame/Sub Frame is prematurely corroded and completely broken in half.
Normal driving and the seat broke and has been for several years causing instability and oscillation. Recently my steering wheel will not align, brought it to a mechanic that informed me the rear sub-frame is cracked on both sides causing the tires to malign, creating un-even wear on the back tires and a hazard to drive.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
this is the second transmission i have put in this.. these cvt's are complete garbage and nissan is aware of it. Stand behind your product for once and replace this transmission on your dime. Will drive perfect sometimes and then randomly 3k-5k rpms and wont shift. sometimes i can shut it off and restart it and it will work fine again. sometimes it wont and i have to drive around with excessively high rpms. Also what is this annoying air suction noise i hear under throttle, sounds like an intake or blow off valve. there are zero vaccum leaks,
*** DRIVER SEAT BOLT BROKEN AND UNSTABLE *** TEMPERATURE GAUGE NEEDLE MOVES UP TOWARD "OVERHEAT" WHEN CRUISING AT 50MPH *** TRANSMISSION STALLED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AFTER 60K MILES {ODOMETER READING]
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have a 2006 Nissan Murano and the rear subframe is having premature heavy rust causing the rear wheels to camber inwards. I noticed that 90% or the Murano around this year are concerned and it creates a extremely dangerous road safety issue Nissan should recall these car equipped with this subframe and save lives !
The rear subframe has been rotting for some time before being discovered. The driver side sway bar link in the rear has broken. joint points are ready to break as well. Tires leaning inwards. The contact stated that the manufacturer has not provided any assistance for this vehicle or for the one they owned previously.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.

I was driving from a funeral on Saturday July, 30th. 2022. The Car Has Been Fine, & Shown No Leading Hints Of Error. I Did Have A Spare Tire On In Which It Had No Problems Either. After The Funeral I Was Notified My Tire Was Ready, So I Headed Over To Get It Changed. After About 10/15 Mins Of Driving (Taking My Daughter To Work) The Car Started To Pull, & Make A Screeching/Loud Noise. At First I Thought Maybe It Was The Brake Pads, Or Tire Rubbing. After Calling My Dad (A Mechanic), & Talking With Others. Searching Online As Well. It Was Said To Be The Transmission. Few Moments Went By Then It Was The Transfer Case, Axel, Then Finally An Electrical Issue. My All Wheel Drive Light Constantly Flashes. I Have No Control Over The Off/On Module. Anything Over 5MPH It’s Does The Noise, & Tries To Pull The Car To The Left. It Gets Louder, & More Strong As I Accelerate. I’ve Never Had Problems Out Of This Car, Nor Has It Acted This Way Or Anything Close. It Was All Like A Random Happening. Now I Feel I’m At A Loss As No One Knows The Actual Problem. As My Fiancé & I Both Work. We Have No Other Transportation, & Have No Way Of Getting A New Car At The Moment.
My car horn recently stopped working when depressing the areas on the steering column with the horn icon. I almost got into multiple accidents, first when driving on the interstate and could not honk on aggressive drivers who sharply pulled in front of me when driving; and later when trying to park in a parking lot and another driver reversed into me because he could not see me and I could not honk to signal him that I was in his blindspot. I checked with my mechanic of 23 years and he found that there was no issue with the fuse or the horn itself - the horn activates when manually triggered. However, there is a problem with the relay from the steering column to the horn and with this Nissan model, that relay is integrated with the air bag in the steering column. It's possible that there's also an issue with the airbag but it's never had reason to deploy. Lodging this incident because the horn is a central part of any car safety system and there seems to be a manufacturer defect in the relay that is integrated into the steering column to trigger the horn.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim

Have 3 lights on Dash ABS, AWD, and Brake. Had the vehicle diagnosed, And was told it is the ABS module. Shouldn't this be covered as a safety issue.

RECENTLY MY 2006 NISSAN MURANO STARTED MAKING GRINDING NOISES WHEN GOING UP HILLS AND TURNING CORNERS. AFTER TAKING IT TO A FEW SHOPS WHO SAID IT MIGHT BE THE CVT TRANSMISSION THAT WAS COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY SINCE SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD ISSUES, I WENT AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEIR DIAGNOSIS WAS A ELECTRONIC COUPLER ASSEMBLY FAILURE WHICH HAS TO DO WITH MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL. THE CAR IS NOT BALANCING THE LOAD PROPERLY AND THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING. THERE IS A 2 MONTH WAITING LIST FOR THIS PART BECAUSE IT HAS GONE BAD IN SO MANY NISSAN VEHICLES. YET THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL AND NO EXTENDED WARRANTY PUT ON IT. THE VEHICLE IS SAID TO BE RELATIVELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE BUT THEY ARE MONTHS OUT ON GETTING PARTS IN FOR IT TO BE FIXED. *JS
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 8:30 PM WHEN MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER AND STALLING, IT FINALLY SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY IN THE FAST LANE. I FRANTICALLY TRIED RESTART FINALLY IT DID I WAS THEN ONLY ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE IN THE SMALL SPACE BETWEEN THE ON RAMP AND THE SLOW LANE OF FREEWAY. THE TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY AND I ALMOST GET HIT BY A VEHICLE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO GET TO A SAFE PLACE. WHERE THE INCIDENT OCCURRED THE ARE CONCRETE BARRIERS DUE TO THE EXPANSION WORK BEING DONE ON HIGHWAY 4 WEST BOUND. PITTSBURGH CALIFORNIA. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW ON FEB 23, 2006, IT HAS HAD NUMEROUS MECHANICAL DEFECTS FROM DAY ONE. IN THE LAST 2 YEARS I HAVE SPENT OVER $ FOR REPAIRS AND LAST MONTH I BROUGHT TO THE DEALER FOR THESE PROBLEMS AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THE VEHICLE HAD MORE REPAIRS THAT IT NEEDED COSTING $2500.00. I AM AT MY WITS END. I AM NOT WORKING ON DISABILITY. ON THE FOLLOWING DAY THE CAR DID IT AGAIN. *TR
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
AIR BAG LIGHT STARTED FLASHING CONSTANTLY AND HAVE NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE BACK SEAT BELT LOCKS DO NOT WORK NOW.
SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, I HEARD A LOUD POP. I COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING JUST SITTING THERE. ABOUT 20 MINUTES LATER, MAKING A TURN FROM A STOP SIGN, AS THE TIRES HIT THE DRAINAGE RUT IN THE ROAD, I FELT LIKE I WAS BEING THROWN FROM MY SEAT. THE LOUD POP WAS THE SHEARING OF A METAL STRUCTURAL COMPONENT ON THE SEAT TRACK UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE MOVEMENT IN THE SEAT WAS SO MUCH THAT, HAD I BEEN REAR ENDED, MY HEAD WOULD HIT THE FRAME ABOVE THE WINDSHIELD OR THE WINDSHIELD ITSELF. NISSAN CHARGED ME $1700 FOR THE REPAIR, CLAIMING I SHOULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. HOWEVER, NISSAN CORPORATION REFUSES TO COVER ANY COST OF THE REPAIR. WHEN CONTACTED, THEY TELL ME THEY ARE UNABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COMPONENT. *JS
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.

TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIRS FOR OIL LEAKS, LIGHTS, TRUNK RELEASE, VEHICLE RUNNING LIKE A TRUCK, A/C, RADIO,TRANSMISSION AND CAMERA DISPLAY IN CAR. WAS TOLD TRUNK RELEASE , MOTOR, AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, AND LIGHTING COULDN'T BE DUPLICATED. THE SAME DAY I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE TURN VEHICLE OFF CLOSE THE DRIVERS DOOR AND HEAD AND REAR LIGHTS SHUT OFF, CLOSE MY TRUNK AND AGAIN HEAD AND REAR LIGHTS WENT OFF. TOOK VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER AND SHOWED THE SERVICE ADVISOR MY CONCERNS INFORMED ME A DIANOGSTIC TEST WOULD COST $270 IF COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, AND I COULDN'T BE TAKE HOME BECAUSE IT WAS OVER 10 MILES, AND ADVISOR SUGGESTED TAKING CAR CLOSER TO WHERE I LIVED. SHOWED HIM AND TOLD HIM MY CONCERNS: FOOT PEDAL SWITCH WORKS SOMETIMES, SEAT OPERATES SOMETIME, THE SMELL FROM EXHAUST HAS A VERY BAD SMELL, A/C WORKS SOMETIME WHILE DRIVING AND DOESN'T BLOW COLD AT ALL WHILE IDOL, AND SUN VISOR KEEP FALLING DOWN LOWER CAUSING YOU TO NOT SEE..
FRONT HEADLAMP FAILED WHEN CAR WAS ONLY A YEAR OLD. TO REPLACE THE LAMP WAS $279.00. THE LEXUS, WHICH WAS JUST A NISSAN MURANO,HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH LAMPS BURNING OUT ,AND THEY WERE ALL REPLACED BY THE COMPANY UNDER A RECALL. NISSAN REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM, BUT MOST MECHANICS ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM. AS I CHECKED WITH 10 OF THEM IN MY AREA THEY ALL SAID THEY HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURRING. *AK

I BOUGHT A 2006 MURANO WITH 61000 MILES ON IT FOUR MONTHS AGO. THE TRANSFER CASE WENT ON IT THIS PAST WEEK. ESTIMATED COST? $3300.00! THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IT WAS PURCHASED FROM BASICALLY TOLD ME I AM OUTTA LUCK BECAUSE THE WARRANTY IS UP. I DID MY RESEARCH AND THE TRANSFER CASE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE AWD VEHICLES. WHY HAS THIS NOT BE RECALLED? WHY IS NISSAN NOT STANDING BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES?!?! I CONTACTED THE NISSAN CORPORATION AND TO NO AVAIL EITHER. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THIS MUCH MONEY FOR A CAR THAT ONLY HAS 63000 MILES ON IT NOW AND HAVE ONLY HAD FOUR MONTHS! OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A GREATER ISSUE HERE. CUSTOMER RETENTION IS NOT AT THE TOP OF NISSAN'S LIST APPARENTLY AND SELLING FAULTY VEHICLES IS. VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE LACK OF ASSISTANCE. *TR
