What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Nissan Rogue, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The CVT transmission started to fail. 1 day it started jerking some. 2 or 3 times. The next time was more jerking and harder. The last day the jerking was longer in length of time. Then the transmission became a little louder. The jerking was constant with acceleration. We made it home and parked the car. I did not see a code, the engine light only came on after three condition became questionable as to returning home. No dealer or mechanic has inspected the car. I'm positive it is the transmission from all i read on the internet.
No idea why. My transmission has went up again. After about 55k ish since it was replaced the last time. Done at the Nissan dealer and everything.

Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The power steering failed while driving
I am the 2nd owner of a 2011 Nissan Rogue purchased in 2016. I have had four problems with the vehicle, the major one being the transmission that will not cool and overheats as soon as the temperature goes up. With the most recent heat wave, I have experienced no power going to the wheels. I had no power steering and had to push my car off the road with a friend with in the car. I also experienced a short in the system where it had no power at all and seemed to have no battery power, it clearly is an electrical short. The fourth issue is the passenger seat airbag. I have never received any notice from Nissan about any of these issues since I purchased the car used in 2016. When I called today, I was told that there were no recalls on my car and hung up on by Nissan America. I clearly saw four recalls that had been issued over the years on all four of these issues. I drive for the elderly, homeless, homebound and other persons in need in my community and have done so since I was 14 years old. I am a good citizen and have gone out of my way to try to make things right and just for all people. I am appalled at the conduct and behavior that I received on the phone today. I understand that my car is older but I would have returned my car for service if I had received a recall of which I received none. I know for fact that the recall for the transmission came out in 2016 and should have covered my car. I cannot take care of the people and continue with what I do in my community without a working car. I cannot afford a new car and surely do not deserve such disrespect.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the front driver's side exterior door handle detached and fell off the vehicle. Additionally, the front passenger's side exterior door handle fractured, and half of the door handle fell off the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with a failed front driver's and front passenger's side door actuators. The contact was informed that the front driver's and front passenger's side door actuators needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the rear passenger's side exterior door handle fractured and detached. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The contact was informed that the failure was a known failure with similar vehicles. The vehicle was scheduled for an inspection in several days. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not associated with a recall related to the failure. The contact stated that the damage had occurred during normal operational and was not the result of excessive pressure or force. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
On interstate, the vehicle felt like it had a "float" feel and occasional shimmy while driving. Upon parking in town, stranger identified vehicle's driver-side rear wheel was not straight. Observation showed ground-contacting point of tire was angled outward from car. Diagnosis by both Nissan dealership and subsequent independent mechanic was extreme rust of undercarriage causing upper control arm to rust through and rot of the underside of car to the point of being "not salvageable" and non-fixable. This meant the rear wheel was wobbling while driving on the interstate and could have completely let go. This vehicle has been consistently maintained as a daily-driver and at only 59k miles, it was mentioned several times that the level of rust was extraordinary.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim

The contact noticed that the vehicle was jerking prior to the failure. The driver depressed the brake pedal but was concerned about the vehicle moving. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified however, no further assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000. The VIN was not available.
I BEGAN TO DRIVE THIS 2011 NISSAN ROGUE AND NOTICED WHEN STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, WHEN IT TURNED GREEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. THIS HAS HAPPENED OVER AND OVER AGAIN. WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING A SPEED OF 70 MILES MY CAR BEGAN TO LOOSE POWER, AND SPEED. IT WENT AS LOW AS 40 MILES AND I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT. I WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR INDICATORS EVER CAME ON. NEITHER WITH THE FIRST ISSUE, OR THE SECOND ISSUE. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING. I WAS DRIVING WITH MY 6 YR OLD WHO HAS SPECIAL NEEDS THE FIRST TIME. I BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY THINKING THAT WOULD HELP. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN, WHILE DRIVING WITH MY TWO BOYS AND TWO GRANDSON'S IN THE CAR. I AGAIN LOST POWER AND COULD NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY ON THE HIGHWAY. CARS WERE FLYING BY ME, AND I FELT HELPLESS AS THIS VEHICLE WOULDN'T MAINTAIN A PROPER HI-WAY SPEED. VERY DEBILITATING. SCARY WHEN YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER YOUR VEHICLE SPEED, AND CAN'T ACCELERATE. NISSAN STATES THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE CVT. THEY HAVE AGREED TO REPLACE MY TRANSMISSION AS IT HAS ALSO FAILED. BUT REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE WORK?? PLEASE HELP, AS I AM SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON GOING THROUGH THIS RIGHT NOW. SO IF THEY REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WHO'S TO SAY IT WONT HAPPEN AGAIN???
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
ON 7/31/2020, TRAVELING FROM FT. LAUDERDALE TO SARASOTA, FLORIDA, ON I-95, (ALLIGATOR ALLEY) AROUND 1 HR IN AFTER TURNING ON CRUISE CONTROL, (90+ OUTSIDE TEMPS), CRUISING AT AROUND 82 MPH ... CAR SUDDENLY DECELERATED TO -60 MPH AND, PEDAL TO THE METAL, WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, CONTINUED TO SLOW DOWN. I PULLED INTO A REST STOP, TURNED IT OFF FOR 20 MINUTES, THEN RESTARTED IT AND USED MY FIXD DEVICE AND APP. IT BROUGHT UP CODE P0744, "TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CIRCUIT INTERMITTENT". IT RAN OK FOR THE REST OF THE TRIP AND THE RETURN TRIP BUT ACCELERATION WAS SLUGGISH. ON 9/3/2020, SAME TRIP, SAME ROAD, SAME 90+ TEMPS OUTSIDE, ON I-95, (ALLIGATOR ALLEY), A LITTLE OVER 1 HOUR IN, NO CRUISE CONTROL THIS TIME, CAR DID THE SAME EXACT THING: DECELERATED FROM 82 TO -60 MPH. I PULLED INTO A REST STOP, TURNED IT OFF FOR A HALF HOUR, RE-STARTED IT, RAN THE FIXD APP AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME IT SAID "NO ERRORS", AND THREW NO CODES. BOTH TIMES CAR WAS OK AFTER BEING OFF AWHILE. NO PROBLEMS ON RETURN TRIP ...BUT IN GENERAL, ACCELERATION IS SLUGGISH. I STOPPED BY THE DEALER AND THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THEY COULD PUT THE COMPUTER ON IT FOR $139 BUT PROBABLY COULDN'T DIAGNOSE IT UNLESS IT WAS HAPPENING OR SOME CODES WERE STORED, WHICH WAS DOUBTFUL I SAID NO THANKS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM! THERE ARE OVER 200 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE/PROBLEM FOR THIS YEAR ALONE, BUT IT APPEARS THAT ALL ROGUES SEEM TO HAVE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS EXACT ISSUE OF DECELERATION AND THE MANUFACTURER ACTS AS IF IT DOESN'T EXIST. SOME HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION, SOME HAVE ADDED TRANSMISSION COOLERS WITH NO IMPROVEMENT. I'VE OWNED DOZENS OF VEHICLES AND HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. IN MID PANDEMIC WITH ONLY MY SS CHECK AS INCOME I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I NEED TO DRIVE UP TO NY AND MA AND NEED A SAFE, RELIABLE CAR!
WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY VEHICLE GO FROM 70 TO 40 RPM JUST JUMP, AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RUN , HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND WAIT A WHILE BEFORE IT CAN MOVE, CANNOT TAKE A TRIP THAT TAKE 30 MIN, ALSO WILL NOT CRANK WHEN THE WEATHER IS 30 OR UNDER., WHEN VEHICLE STALLED DANGEROUS BECAUSE CARS ARE BEHIND IT ALMOST WRECKED ON SEVERAL OCCASION/., THIS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE. STARTED FROM 2012 TO THIS DATE 2019/

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
With no clear reason the passenger seat airbag system became defective. It did not detect passenger and always stays off. Took it to a certified Nissan dealer and they said it is a common issue, and the only fix is to reset it electrically or pay 2,500 for a new passenger seat. I opted to reset it electrically which cost $150 and was a temporary fix as the system resumed being defective after a few days. The defect is very dangerous as is disables the passenger airbag completely and will not deploy in the event of an accident which can be deadly.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Code: B1018, OCS Sensor failure in passenger seat which controls the passenger airbags. Passenger side airbag light kicks on thinking there is a "child" or something light in the front seat which disables the airbag. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Passenger side airbag light kicks on thinking there is a "child" or something light in the front seat which disables the airbag. This is a known issue of the manufacturer but yet the refuse to include other years of these vehicles in their recall. There even has been a lawsuit on their "fix" because they just continue to use the same sensors even when replacing the recalled vehicles sensors. They also expect you to pay 2700 to replace an ENTIRE seat cushion to replace said sensor. I am sorry but poor people do not have that kind of money laying around. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes was reproduced and confirmed by a local Nissan Deal. They even cleared the code and within 2 weeks it appeared again in the same way/format. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Air bag warning light and the passenger side airbag light kicks on thinking there is a "child" or something light in the front seat which disables the airbag.

WHEN SEAT BELT IS ON WHILE DRIVING LIGHT STAYS ON DASH SAYING I DON'T HAVE ON
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM A OUT OF TOWN TRIP AND ALL OF SUDDEN LOST POWER TO ACCELERATE. I COULDN'T NOT GET ANY SPEED AND CARS WERE DRIVING UP BEHIND ME ABOUT TO HIT ME AND MY FAMILY. I COULDN'T NOT ACCELERATE ENOUGH TO PULL OVER. NISSAN ADVISED IT WAS THE CVT TRANSMISSION WHICH THEY ARE NOT RECALLING. THIS IS DANGEROUS.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
Drove home, while attempting to park, (car was in motion) vehicle stalled & steering locked, lights on dash flicked off, radio went off then came back on. This happened 4 times while I attempted to park. Finally parked vehicle successfully & turned car off. This happened several times in recent months but only for a few seconds also on another occasion was unable to turn steering wheel once vehicle was on. Tonight was the worst experience, alarming. I plan to take SUV in for check up tomorrow.
SINCE APRIL OF 2011 (VEHICLE WAS 4 MONTHS OLD) I HAVE HAD MY CAR INTO NISSAN FOR AUTO LIGHTS NOT FUNCTIONING (NOT SHUTTING OFF WHEN IN DAYLIGHT), MY IPOD TURNS ON WHEN THE AUDIO IS OFF AND THE ELECTRONIC DRIVER SEAT MOVES FORWARD BY ITSELF. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED AND "SERVICED" MORE THAN 10 TIMES ALREADY AND EACH TIME IT IS "CANNOT REPRODUCE ALTHOUGH THEY SEE IT HAPPENING. THE LAST INCIDENT WAS SATURDAY, 12/14/12 WHEN THE SETTING ON THE DASH CHANGED BY THEMSELVES AND MY TRUNK WOULD NOT OPEN WITH THE IGNITION ON. ON SUNDAY MORNING, MY CAR ENGINE WAS LOCKED AND MY SMART KEY NOR THE REGULAR KEY WOULD UNLOCK THE STEERING COLUMN. I WAS OUT OF STATE WHEN IT OCCURRED AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A DEALER IN CT, I LIVE IN NY. NOW THEY CLAIM THAT ALL THE ABOVE WAS CAUSED BY A UNDERSIZED BATTERY. THEY INSTALLED A 700AMP IN MY CAR NOW STANDARD BATTERY THAT CAME WITH THE CAR IS 575 AMP. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? HOW CAN THEY SAY THIS IS THE ISSUE. HOW CAN THEY MANUFACTURE CARS WITH UNDERSIZED BATTERIES AND NOT HAVE IT ON A RECALL OR ISSUES LIST ANYWHERE? EVEN THE DEALER IN CONNECTICUT WAS PUZZLED. I CANNOT SAY IOF THIS IS GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT I CAN TELL YOU, I WILL NOT TAKE THIS LYING DOWN. NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS IS TOTALLY USELESS AND THERE IS NO CONSUMER IN THIS DEPARTMENT, THEY ARE A WASTE OF TIME. I FILED TWO COMPLAINTS 8 MONTHS APART REGARDING THE SAME ISSUES # 7274639 AND 10257638. BOTH WENT UNRESOLVED AND IGNORED., THEY KEEP CLAIMING THEY ARE WITHIN THEIR WARRANTY GUIDELINES. WHAT GUIDELINES - THE VEHICLE IS AN OBVIOUS LEMON. NOT SURE HOW TO FILE FOR THE LEMON LAW OR ACT ON THIS AS THIS CAR IS UNSAFE AND UNRELIABLE. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. *TR

HELLO: MY NAME IS [XXX] I AM THE PROUD OWNER OF A 2011 ROGUE WITH APPROXIMATELY 21,000 MILES. BUT I HAVE A VERY SERIOUS COMPLAINT SINCE I HAVE THE OWNED THE VEHICLE MY FIANCE HAS HAD TO TAKE OFF TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR THE TPMS SENSOR UNIT NEARLY EVERY OTHER MONTH SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS COST THE FACTORY ON OR ABOUT $200.00 PER VISIT. WHEN THE WARRANTY ELAPSE IS NISSAN SAYING THIS WILL BE ON ME? IS THERE A CALL BACK ON THIS MALFUNCTION? IS THERE A RESOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OR HAS THE PROBLEM BEEN ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS FATALLY INJURED? THE DEALER IS SAYING THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BUT WITHOUT AN RESOLUTION., JUST BRING IT IN. BUT THEY ARE NORMALLY REPLACING THE SENSOR UNIT EACH TIME. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 NISSAN ROGUE AWL, PURSHCSED NEW FROM MAGUIRE NISSAN LEBANON, PA THE ORIGINAL TIRES ARE DUNLOP SP SPORTS 7000AS LINE SIZEP225/55R18/SL. THE VEHICLE UNDER 10,000 MILES PRODUCED A WHIPPING SOUND WHICH ALTERED IN PITCH WITH THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. THESE TIRES WERE ROTATED PER MANUFACUTES INSTRUCTION, ALIGNED AND BALANCED EVERY 5000 MILES. THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO MAGUIRE NISSAN ON THREE OCCASSIONS AT WHICH TIME THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE . THE NISSAN CORPORATION WAS CONTACTED BY ME AND SO WAS DUNLOP TIRES. THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THREE OF THE TIRES SHOWED BUMPS ON THE TREAD SURFACE, BUT REFUSED TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR POOR MANUFACTURING QUALITY. THEY CLAIMED THE TIRES HAD NOT FAILED; THEREFORE, THEY HAD NO RESPONSIBILITIES TO REPLACE THESE TIRES. THE CAR HAS NOW DONE 33,000 MILES AND THE PROBLEM HAS PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED TO THE EXTENT THE NOISE FROM THE TIRES ARE DEAFENING AND RESULTS IN SEVERE STRAIN AND NOISE FATIGUE WHILE DRIVING. I RECENTLY HAD AN ESTIMATE TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES AND THE COST PER WAL MART WOULD BE $964. THE NTSB?S RECORD IN PURSUING THESE CORPORATE CRIMINALS AND ENSURING THE SAFETY OF THE MOTORING PUBLIC HAS AT BEST BEEN INDIFFERENT AND AT WORST COLLUSIVE AND COMPLICIT. DO PEOPLE RECALL THE TIRE FAILURES ON FORD EXPLORES, THE IGNITION SWITCHES DEBACLE IN GMC VEHICLES AND THE ACCELERATOR ISSUES WITH TOYOTA. LET US SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY TEETH OR ARE YOU THE TOOTHLESS WONDERS THAT THE PUBLIC HAVE NOW COME TO BELIEVE YOU ARE?
