2015 Nissan Sentra Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2015 Nissan Sentra, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am writing to report a life-threatening, sudden-onset mechanical defect in my vehicle’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). While driving in heavy traffic, my son experienced a complete and sudden loss of motive power without any warning or dashboard lights. The vehicle abruptly stopped accelerating in a live lane, nearly causing a catastrophic rear-end collision. At just 70,000 miles, far below the expected lifespan of a major powertrain component, a certified technician at B&K Transmission confirmed a total internal CVT failure, requiring a $6,000 replacement. Nissan Customer Care refused any goodwill assistance, citing that the vehicle is beyond its warranty and the temporary extensions granted by previous class-action settlements. However, the expiration of a settlement window does not eliminate an ongoing safety crisis. A transmission failure at 70,000 miles is a systemic defect, not standard wear and tear. Thousands of these defective vehicles remain on public roads, putting unsuspecting drivers at risk of sudden, lethal highway failures. I urge NHTSA to immediately open an investigation into Nissan CVT failures and issue a mandatory safety recall. Automakers must not escape accountability for severe roadway hazards simply because a warranty has lapsed.
Transmission failed on major highway out of no where would not accelerate above 5 MPH
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
When driving the transmission it shudders/hesitates when pressing the accelerator.
The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle unexpectedly stalled while in traffic. There was an abnormal screeching sound coming from the vehicle. The accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The transmission was shifted into reverse(R), but the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The vehicle was shifted into drive(D), and the vehicle lunged forward and then started moving slowly. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that there was a loose bearing inside the transmission. While completing a road test, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact was offered a partial refund and warranty. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 171,000.

1. Front passenger side seat fails to activate the air bag once a passenger has occupied the seat, and buckled up. The airbag "off" indication light remains illuminated at all times, and if it isn't being activated, may cause bodily harm, injury, or death to any passenger of the vehicle in the unfortunate event of a collision. Vehicle was requested to be checked out at Lorenzo Nissan in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in November 2023, but was refused. FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG, FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG INDICATION LIGHT ••••••••••••••••••••••• 2. 2015 Sentra CVT transmission slips, shakes and stalls. On numerous occurrence this has caused near tragic collisions with multiple vehicles. One such instance forced the vehicle into 'limp mode' in a high speed area of a busy freeway and nearly caused numerous vehicles to collide into the stalled Sentra at rates of speed over 70 MPH. Furthermore, the 2015 Sentra has an issue shifting from park, and will not move out of park, even with the brake applied, unless the gear release button is applied. Vehicle was requested to be examined by Lorenzo Nissan in November 2023, but the dealership refused to inspect any possible safety or equipment issues without the promise of purchasing a new Nissan from their dealership. ELECTRICAL & BLUETOOTH PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR: THE SYSTEM SHUTS ITSELF DOWN & REBOOTS WITHOUT PROMPT. THE NISSAN LOGO REAPPEARS ON SCREEN IN THE SAME MANNER THAT IT DOES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FIRST INITIATED VIA KEYLESS START IGNITION. THREE WEEKS AGO, I WAS DRIVING & THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS IN TRANSIT ON THE FREEWAY (BW PARKWAY) - HEADED TO BALTIMORE CITY FROM BOWIE CITY IN MARYLAND AND REBOOTED ITSELF. THE FEAR IS THAT THE CAR WILL SHUT DOWN ONE DAY, NOT JUST ELECTRONICALLY, BUT ALSO THE ENGINE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A FATAL ACCIDENT. THE SECOND OR THIRD DAY, AFTER I BROUGHT THE CAR HOME, I TURNED THE CAR ON TO TAKE IT OUT FOR A RIDE, AND IT SHUT OFF ON ME COMPLETELY. EACH TIME THE SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN, THE MILEAGE ODOMETER DIALS BACK A COUPLE OF HUNDRED NUMBERS OR SOMETIMES A FEW NUMBERS. THERE'S NO WAY TO TELL HOW MANY MILES ARE TRULY ON THE VEHICLE. I ALSO DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE IF THE VEHICLE WAS TRULY INSPECTED BY EMISSIONS OR THAT THEY CHANGED MY FUEL. I ALSO DO NOT KNOW THE TRUE CONDITION OF THIS VEHICLE. I SAW SOME RUST UNDER THE HOOD ON A FEW OF THE SCREWS. I ALSO SAW CORROSION UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SIDE OVER THE BRAKE PEDAL. I AM HAVING PROBLEMS STAYING IN MY LANE ON THE ROAD. WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE ROAD, THE CAR SWERVES IF THERE ARE HIGH WINDS (SUSPENSION ON FRONT & REAR END ALIGNMENT APPEAR TO BE GONE). ON FRIDAY MARCH 15TH IN THE 5 O'CLOCK PM HOUR, I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY. I OPENED THE SUNROOF & A GUSTY WIND CAME DOWN, KNOCKING THE CAR OUT OF ITS LANE. I REGAINED CONTROL OF THE CAR. I SHUT THE SUNROOF. THIS HAPPENS NO MATTER WHAT SPEED I DRIVE. THE NEXT PROBLEM IS WITH THE BLUETOOTH. I ATTEMPTED TO CALL A RELATIVE USING THE HANDS FREE VERBAL COMMAND & IT WENT HAYWIRE & BEGAN CALLING RANDOM PEOPLE IN MY PHONE. AFTER THAT, THE CAR REBOOTED ITSELF AGAIN. THIS PROBLEM IS NEW. RESEARCH CONFIRMS THAT THE DEALER HAS A HISTORY.

SHOULD THIS BE A WARRANTY ITEM OR RECALL? REPAIRS FRO RIM AND TIRE CAME TO $600.00.
