Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2022 Peterbilt 579, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category
- Powertrain (other)457.1%

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.

After a decel to 20ish mph, the automated manual transmission attempted to shift into gear to begin acceleration. The transmission made load noises indicating a failure followed by a transmission warning with the fault code being 617 FMI 14. All acceleration and engine braking ability was disabled, increasing the risk of an accident due to the vehicle being disabled. A similar safety recall for the same vehicle would be NHTSA #24V-190 which causes the vehicle to become disabled and increase a crash risk. This is a known issue caused by compressed air contamination according to Eaton Transmissions service bulletin TAIB-1006, which was first published April 2023. In the over 3 years since the service bulletin was released, Eaton, Peterbilt, Paccar, and Cummins(engine manufacturers) have failed to develop adjusted maintenance intervals, added inspections, or additional filtration to prevent contamination of the transmissions air system. They've instead passed the financial burden of repair on the customers by denying warranties. The dealer determined based on TAIB-1006 that the MTM requires replacement and the air system cleaned of contamination. This was based on data and not a detailed inspection to determine the internal failure.
The contact owns a 2022 Peterbilt Conventional 579. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission independently shifted to neutral. The vehicle was driven to the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was turned off and restarted, and the vehicle was independently reset. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the contact was informed that a software update was ordered by the manufacturer. The software update was performed; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact was informed that there was no fix for the failure because the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the dealer was instructed to perform the software update again. The failure mileage was approximately 540,000.

I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT MY TRUCK ISSUE . I BOUGHT THE TRUCK PETERBILT 579 2022 FROM GOLDEN STATE PETERBILT FRESNO CA ON 03/03/2021. WHEN I DROVE THE TRUCK I REALIZED IT WAS PULLING TO THE RIGHT. I IMMEDIATELY INFORMED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I DROVE THE TRUCK ABOUT 200 MILES TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TRUCK, SO I LEFT THE TRUCK AT THE DEALERSHIP ON 03/04/21 TO FIX IT. THE COMPANY HAS CLAIMED TO HAVE REPAIRED THE TRUCK THREE TIMES SINCE THEN BUT THE TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE TRUCK STILL PULLS TO THE RIGHT AND IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE ON THE ROAD .AFTER ABOUT 21 DAYS, THE COMPANY HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THE TRUCK OR FIND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.
