What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2022 Polestar Polestar 2, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
When starting the vehicle and placing it in reverse, the center screen was frozen and did not show the backup camera or other sfaety information. Safety was put at risk because reverse visiblity / backover prevention were impaired. Other functions such as reverse auto brake were likely unavailable, or a least unmonitored (rear cross traffic allert was definitely unavailable as it depends on the center screen). This was resolved by re-parking the vehicle and rebooting the infotainment system / center screen. It has not been independently reproduced or inspected, as it's presenting as random flakiness and the driver stopped and took troubleshooting steps (out of an abundance of caution). There were no warnings or other issues, though it does correlate with switching diriver profiles and may be yet another safety issue caused by the vehicle's underpowered IHU. (The IHU was upgraded for 2026 models, and is backwards compatible, but no upgrades have been made available in the US)
The rear view camera malfunctioned, despite complying with the recent recall. It is available for inspection upon request. Safety was compromised by reduced rear visibility due to the lack of a rear view camera. This is an intermittent issue, not reliably reproducible for a dealer or service center. There has been no third party inspection, and no warning. The failure correlated with switching drivers; this may be part of oingoing issues with the underpowered IHU not handling driver switching well. If you are trying to reproduce the issue on a sample vehicle, I encourage swapping a few times between two drivers.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Driver information display has not been turning on when car wakes from sleep on hot days, typically over 105 degrees and parked for over five hours. Driver unable to see current speed, current state of charge, etc. Display turns on, with no issues, the next morning or after the car is parked in the shade for more than 30 mins.
Electric vehicle DC charging pins have defective insulator on its tip. The insulator freely rotates, is loose, and one has fallen off or can get stuck in charger handles. The easily detachable insulator, if not present, can cause shorting and arcing of high voltage at the charge port. Polestar has specified the charge port is an important safety related component in communications with them. With the defective charge port DC insulator easily falling off, this could lead to electrocution, fire at charge port due to melting pins from arcing, damage to charging station plugs. The service center the vehicle has been taken to claimed damage was caused by a defective charging handle at charger but did not have any proof that was the cause. Google search on forums has shown this is a common fault and show electrical melting of the DC charger pins. There were no warning signs there was anything wrong till the insulator fell off. Once one insulator fell off, that’s when the remaining insulator was found to be loose and rotates freely. Vehicle is available for inspection if requested.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
Rearview camera lag then disconnect. Ceases functioning until restart.
During reversing the rear view camera stopped functioning. Attempts to toggle the camera setting did not correct the issue. After years, this problem still exists and is unacceptable. When will the NHTSA enforce an actual fix from Polestar? The computer has insufficient processing power and RAM to reliably function and the cameras are included in that function.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim

Since software update 5.x the behicle it throws a false "Disconnect Charging Cable" message on the dashboard display even though no charging cable is attached to the vehicle. This leaves the vehicle immobilized. Multiple instances since approx [XXX]. I checked codes and there is a fault code VCU1-U116E00. Further research indicated that prior reports to nhtda resulted in 2 seperate service bulletins. My guess is that prior 4.x fix was not included in 5.x major software update [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My vehicle is a 2022 Polestar 2. For model years 2025 and below within the State of California, Polestar does NOT include the drive shafts (from electric motors to the wheels) as part of their 100K drive train warranty. And for model years 2026 on-wards within the State of California, Polestar will include the drive shafts (from electric motors to the wheels) as part of their 100K drive train warranty. Mainly due to a new propulsion law in California. For those with model years 2025 and below, a RECALL for known defective drive shafts should be granted as Polestar has revised parts for the rear left and rear right drive shafts. I believe the new shafts are now on the 2026 model. My vehicle is covered up to 50K miles, and I am now a few hundred over this, I have asked for goodwill on their warranty coverage but I am not receiving any response from Volvo Marin (this is Polestar Marin's service dealer). I also attempted to contact Polestar Support and they told me to reach out to the dealer, but they have been very unresponsive with several emails to the Service Director. Symptoms - during deceleration, a ticking sound can be faintly heard by the rear wheels. It sounds like the wheel of fortune ticking sound. Issues - when a driveshaft breaks, the vehicle immediately loses power and will likely stop moving, accompanied by loud clunking or grinding noises. At higher speeds, broken pieces can fly off and cause significant damage to other components or the road, and a broken driveshaft can also lead to loss of control, affecting steering and braking. Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Persistent unresolved front-suspension defect on a 2022 Polestar 2 (Polestar Approved CPO, purchased 03/20/2025). Vehicle pulls right under normal driving on flat, level pavement — a directional control hazard requiring constant steering correction at highway speed. A front-suspension noise over bumps developed after recent repairs. The Polestar-authorized dealer (University Volvo / Polestar Charlotte) made FIVE repair attempts on this same complaint without resolving it: 10/23/2025; 11/04/2025; 04/01/2026; 04/15/2026; and 04/17–04/27/2026. Five alignments performed. Both upper strut bearings replaced 04/15/2026 (Inv #XXX , $1,499.44). On the next visit the dealer replaced a control arm and did additional shock and bearing work as no-charge line items (Inv #263452, $279.19) — implicitly acknowledging the prior repair was inadequate. Within one block of leaving the dealer on 04/15, vehicle developed a new front-right rattle that did not exist before. Dealer's own technician notes on Inv #XXX state verbatim: "test drove vehicle and could not verify any pulling while driving" — repair performed WITHOUT confirmed symptom reproduction. As of 05/04/2026 (six days after pickup), vehicle is again pulling right and now has a NEW noise over bumps. Condition is materially worse than before any repair. This is the subject of Polestar Technical Journal TJ XXX (NHTSA document MC-XXX-0001), which acknowledges creaking/knocking from the upper front suspension on Polestar 2 MY 2021–2024 and states a redesigned upper bearing was released Q4 2023, with a further redesign in week 20 of 2024. Polestar has acknowledged in writing this component was defective and redesigned TWICE. Polestar Customer Engagement has refused to escalate to a contact with authority to remedy. Filing for ODI trend analysis, federal record of the defect and failed repairs, and to flag a known-defect CPO sale unremedied under warranty. Recurring rear suspension clunking/rattling over bumps compromises handling/control. Authorized dealer (Volvo Cars Marin) failed to repair after 40+ days out-of-service and 2 attempts. Noise documented in videos; dealer now delays service 33+ days. Safety risk during turns/emergency maneuvers.

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
After the update that should fix the car, it now has several issues. One Pedal Driving doesn't work. When using One Pedal Driving the car should stop when you release the gas. Now the car continues to roll. It is reporting "Brake Failure" and "Collision Detection Failure". Polestar is saying this is normal after the update and it should fix itself in time. Unacceptable, the car has has issues for a year without any updates. Then this is released and makes it work.
The car suddenly showed a "BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE" and the brakes became minimally responsive, at best. Luckily I was near my house and not going 70 on the freeway or going even 30 downhill on a curvy road! The seat belt started contracting violently multiple times. The parking brake would not work. I could not turn off the vehicle. It would not go into "tow mode". I could not open the trunk. The car was SHAKING. The tow operator needed my help to load the vehicle because there was no braking available. He tied it while it was still on, as it would not turn off. Been at the shop for days already and they have no answers, but this could have been an extremely dangerous situation!

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
There was as turn signal malfunction. It is not clear if the issue was purely internal or external, or confirned to the sound versus also impacting the lights. The turn signal sound was slow / irregular, missing beats, and appeared to slow down and catch up. it is unlclear if safety was at risk as I can't see the outside of the vehicle to verify whether this was just an audio issue or a signal issue. It hasn't been independently reproduced, and can't be consistently reproduced, though there is a correlation with switching users (possibly due to the underpowered IHU). The only other symptom was an unusably slow IHU (like taking more than a minute to pull up recent destinations on the center screen).
What failed? There have been a couple instances of the screen (IHU) rebooting while just driving down the road. This temporarily disables the HVAC (including defroster) and turn signal sounds. It is unclear which ADAS functions are impacted. It is available for inspection upon request, if you visit me in NC. How was safety put at risk? Disabling the defroster could cause the windshield to fog up quickly, and the distraction of the IHU rebooting could cause the driver to focus on the issue instead of the road. Safety related ADAS functions may also have been impacted, that is unclear. This has not been confirmed or reproduced by a third party, it has only happened a couple of times and is fairly random. If I had to guess it's an OOM (out of memory) condition in the IHU caused by an under-spec'd IHU plus a memory leak somewhere. Has it been inspected by anybody else? Nope. Where there any warnings? The IHU was more sluggish than usual, but there were no other warnings.

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
My door latches keep freezing when the temperature is below freezing. Its 27F here in Ohio and my rear doors are frozen again. The door itself isn't frozen - the latching mechanism is. Sometimes they're frozen so they won't latch when you close the door. Nothing happens. Today, they're stuck closed. I couldn't get my daughter out of the car for daycare. She's in a carseat. I think this is a pretty big safety issue. What if there was an accident, a fire or drowning because we can't get out of the car? Google suggests that this is a known issue on some models of Volvo and Polestar vehicles. A recall was issued for some Volvo models, but not the Polestar 2. I also read that Polestar will only replace the door latches under warranty. Doesn't seem safe to me
We were driving on the highway at 65 miles per and the driver side front windshield trim came off. The windshield is the original manufacturer windshield. The vehicle now has significant wind noise and—more significantly—allows water to leak into the cabin and damage sensitive electronics.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2022 Polestar 2. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and turned off, the door locks became inoperable. The contact was unable to enter the vehicle without using the key fob. The contact stated that on one occasion, entry was only possible through the trunk after manually engaging the trunk latch. The contact further stated that the failure recurred, and during a subsequent incident, both the doors and the trunk latch were inoperable, preventing access to the vehicle. The contact had to wait an extended period of time before being able to enter the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Air bags sensors are flagging in the vehicle polestar has failed to provide a adequate solution for faster service. Polestar has 2 locations one in California and the other in Arizona. The issue is I am in Las Vegas and have made several calls to Polestar service advising that my airbag sensors are flagging that they will not deploy in case of a accident. You can not get a service appointment between these 2 locations because they are booked up for months and months. I am stuck with a recall and now a airbag issue that will not be repaired no time soon at no fault of mines. So in short I have a car that is not safe to drive but I'm responsible for my auto loan.

Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
I got my Polestar 2 in November and just realized my 19" Michelin Primacy 4 tires are summer tires. I live in the Northeast US where the weather gets very cold and we get a lot of snow. I looked at my window sticker and it doesn't say anything about summer tires. I'm surprised that Polestar / Volvo negligently put summer tires on a NON-performance model and did not inform customers like me in snowy regions - this is very dangerous! Polestar really needs to either provide all season tires as standard in snowy regions or proactively inform customers that their cars are equipped with summer tires. The only reason I found out my Polestar came with summer tires is from a Facebook post where a driver got into an accident in the snow with his brand new Polestar not knowing it had summer tires on. There are a lot of facebook posts with Polestar drivers unknowingly driving their Polestars in the snow with summer tires. This is very dangerous!

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
Selt belt indicator light turns off after about a minute of sitting or a minute of driving even if the seatbelt is not buckled. There is a concern the system is turning off the indicator despite the fact that the driver side seat belt remains unbuckled. Also, that the airbag may not deploy as it's designed to because it is not accurately identify if a seat belt is buckled.

I am writing to formally complain about significant issues I am experiencing with my 2022 Polestar 2, vin: [XXX] . Specifically, I am experiencing the following problems: Front Knocking/Rattle Sound: A distinct knocking or rattling sound is emanating from the front tire area, particularly noticeable during low-speed maneuvers and over uneven surfaces. This noise is concerning and suggests a potential suspension or drivetrain issue. Rear Clicking Sound: When moving slowly, a consistent clicking sound can be heard originating from the rear of the vehicle. This clicking sound is also a cause for concern, indicating a potential problem with the rear axle, drivetrain, or associated components. Furthermore, I have become aware through online forums and discussions that other Polestar 2 owners are reporting similar issues with both the front knocking/rattle and the rear clicking sounds. This suggests that these problems are not isolated incidents and may indicate a broader manufacturing or design defect. I request that Polestar take the following actions: Thoroughly investigate these issues and identify the root cause of the knocking/rattle and clicking sounds. Provide a comprehensive solution to repair these problems, ensuring the safety and reliability of my vehicle. Acknowledge the widespread nature of these issues and address them proactively for all affected Polestar 2 owners. Provide me with a loaner vehicle while my car is being repaired. Please contact me at [XXX] or [XXX] to discuss this matter further. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
