What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Pontiac G6, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Vehicle: 2005 Pontiac G6 VIN: [your VIN] Mileage: 185,000 Issue: Sudden **total loss of power steering assist** — **same symptom as NHTSA Recall 14V153000 (GM 14116)**. Recall **was completed years ago**. **Replacement part installed by GM failed in under 5 years**. GM Customer Assistance **refused coverage** under **Special Coverage #14299 (repeat failure after recall)**. Told me “warranties stopped in 2020” — **incorrect**. #14299 covers **repeat failures of recall parts** with **goodwill/safety extensions** beyond 150k miles. This is a **known safety defect** — steering is extremely heavy, nearly caused crash. GM must repair under **federal safety recall obligations**.
I was driving car and went to turn and the steering wheel was very hard to steering. It was as if I had no power to steering. This happed several times without any accidents.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2005 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he became aware that the brake lights had remained illuminated after braking. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number 14V252000 (Electrical System, Exterior Lighting, Vehicle Speed Control, Electronic Stability Control). The VIN was included but had already been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.
My steering wheel started twitching and there's Minimal steering. While driving down the road, the steering wheel twitches with lots of slack and no really control. When you turn the car off and back on power steering comes on in message center on radio and car with wrench on dash comes on and steering wheel gets extremely hard to turn. But if you turn the car on and off again then steering wheel gets loose and twitchy again with no control. Electrical, all my relays and curcuits Have low voltage or high voltage showing on a computer scanner.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim

A few months ago, I was pulling out of a parking lot and started to brake , but my car was not stopping. I quickly pumped my brakes and then my brakes worked. All my brake lights came on; ABS, BRAKE, TC, Check engine; and car maintenance light all came on. They periodically would go away but would return when it rained, or if the brakes gave out. Brakes have gone out twice, once while driving on freeway. Before this issue, I had taken it to a mechanic as the brake light was on, and the ‘brake fluid’ message was on my dash- the mechanic scanned it and said the BCM was malfunctioning, to take it to the dealership. I knew who bought the car originally off the lot, so I knew the specific dealership it was bought from (gmc dealership). When I called and told them the issue, they said they will not touch my car (exact words). It’s no longer under warranty and that they would not work on the car regardless. I took it to the main GMC dealership in my city, where they said it would cost thousands to diagnose and fix the car properly, even though I told them I knew what the issue was and what part needed replacing. They confirmed my cars issue was what I said it was, but said it would be VERY expensive to replace and fix, so I decided not to repair it (as the price was not what they originally told me). Now that the brakes fail periodically, I started looking around and saw others had similar issues.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE EVENING OF JANUARY.24TH,2017 I WAS TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY HEADING HOME AND WHEN I WENT TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE A SEMI PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME I NOTICED THE CARS BEHIND ME WERE NOT REDUCING THEIR SPEED & THE CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT ME BUT SWERVED TO AVOID IT THEN LAID ON THEIR HORN CUSSING ME BECAUSE MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING UNTIL I LET OFF THE BRAKES THEY CAME ON AND STAYED ON, SO I PULLED OVER PUT CAR IN PARK MY HUSBAND GOT OUT AND WAS CHECKING THINGS OUT AND SURE ENOUGH IT WAS LIKE THEY HAD A MIND OF THEIR OWN. SO I CALLED FOR MY FATHER IN LAW TO COME FOLLOW ME HOME SO THAT I WOULD NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND WHEN I WENT TO PUT THE CAR INTO GEAR MY GEAR SHIFT WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK! SO I SHUT CAR OFF LET IT SET FOR 30 MINUTES STARTED BACK UP AND MY IGNITION GOT STUCK AND CONTINUED CRANKING OVER EVEN AFTER STARTED, AND NOW IT SEEMS TO BE A CONTINUOUS THING WITH MY CAR, MY STEERING IS MAKING A NOISE ALMOST LIKE MY WHEELS ARE GOING TO FALL OFF. I AM SCARED THIS IS A DEATH TRAP
LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHT BULB KEEPS BURNING OUT AND BULB HARNESS IS MELTING. HAVE BOUGHT AT LEAST 5 PLUS BULBS AND INSTALLED. IT DID THIS ONCE ON THE LEFT SIDE LOW-BEAM AND NOW IT'S HABITUALLY THE RIGHT SIDE LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHT BULB AND HARNESS.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
My Transmission failed on me driving on the highway.
The contact owns a 2005 Pontiac G6. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the steering wheel started vibrating and became difficult to turn. Additionally, the steering wheel was turning to the left independently. The contact stated that the power steering warning light and the power train warning light were illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle back to the residence. The contact stated that the steering wheel was stuck in a left turn position and would not return to center. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000 (Steering) however, the recall was previously completed on the vehicle. There was no further information provided. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 176,000.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
TOP OF FUEL PUMPS OUT TAKE GETS A HAIRLINE CRACK ALLOWING FUEL TO LEAK ON TOP OF GAS TANK AND NOT BE VISIBLE. CREATES A STRONG ODOR AND FIRE HAZARD. IF LOOKED UP ONLINE THIS COMPLAINT IS VERY COMMON AND LATER MODELS WARRANTED A RECALL. THE 2005-6 SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED BUT HAVEN'T BEEN DUE TO AGE AND LABOR INVOLVED TO DROP THE GAS TANK DUE TO NEWER MODELS HAVING EASIER ACCESS TO THE PUMP WITHOUT DROPPING THE TANK.
AFTER READING NUMEROUS OF ONLINE COMPLAINTS ABOUT GAS SMELL COMING FROM 05 PONTIAC G6. CAR HAS STRONG FUMES COMING INSIDE CABIN AND OUTSIDE CARE WHEN CAR IS EITHER IN MOTION OR PARKED NOT RUNNING. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS A RECALL BEFORE I TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP OR LOCAL MECHANIC TO BE LOOKED AT.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed and repaired; however, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic and the failure was associated with the emissions and cooling system. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, the check engine warning light illuminated two days later. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 174,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
SERVICE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT on and car has not been in any major accidents requiring an airbag. Also, causes the car horn to not work. Dangerous because if I should happen to get in a major accident the airbag may not deploy, I can not warn cars about to back into me because the horn doesn't work.
CAR CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING TO WORK.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
THERE IS DRAIN TUBING CONNECTED TO THE SUNROOF THAT COMES UNCONNECTED BECAUSE ITS TOO SHORT AND LEAKS/POURS WATER ALL OVER THE PASSENGER FRONT AND BACK SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IT HAPPENS WHETHER YOURE DRIVING IT OR ITS SITTING STILL. WATER JUST POURS IN AND SOAKS EVERYTHING ON PASSENGER SIDE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 PONTIAC G6. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ROOF FAILED AND CAUSED WATER TO ENTER INTO THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE WATER WOULD DAMAGE THE CARPET, DASHBOARD, AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE CONTACT DID NOT TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000. *TT
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
AS MY SON WAS DRIVING AROUND A CORNER ABOUT 35-40 MPH HE FELT THE DRIVER SIDE TIRE DROP DOWN, LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. THE TIRE SHREDDED OFF OF THE HUBCAP AND HE FLIPPED APPROXIMATELY 7 TIMES.
THE STEERING WHEEL POPS WHILE TURNING. CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY. TIRE ROF BROKE. SWAY BARS WERE SUPER LOOSE ALL FIXED BUT STEERING COLUMN STILL POPS AND LOCKS UP WHILE TURNING
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
2005 PONTIAC G6 - WATER POURS FROM THE INTERIOR LIGHTS SPLASHING THE INSIDE OF THE CAR AND DRIVER WHICH IS AS UNEXPECTED AS A CHILD RUNNING IN FRONT OF A VEHICLE. THE SUDDEN DOWNPOUR MAY CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THEY LOOK UP TO SEE WHERE THE WATER IS COMING FROM.. NOBODY WAS INJURED IN MY INCIDENT HOWEVER, THE WATER IS COMING FROM THE DRAIN TUBES FROM THE TOP OF THE CAR WHICH HAVE A TENDANCY TO BECOME DISCONNECTED. I AM TOLD THIS IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY HAZARD BUT A DRIVER DOES NOT EXPECT TO BE SUDDENLY SOAKED BY WATER WHEN DRIVING A CAR AND CAN CAUSE THE DRIVER TO BECOME RECKLESS WHICH MAY CAUSE DAMAGE OR INJURY TO A VEHICLE OR A PERSON IF IT HAS NOT ALREADY. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED AS A SAFETY HAZARD. OTHER THAN THE SAFETY HAZARD THAT IT IS, IT ALSO CAUSES THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR TO BE COMPLETELY DESTROYED FROM MOLD AND/OR MILDEW NEEDING COMPLETE REPLACEMENT. THE DEALERS ARE VERY MUCH AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT YET I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN TWICE AND BECAUSE IT WASN'T LEAKING AT THE TIME, THE COULD NOT SEE A PROBLEM. MIND YOU THE BACK FLOORBOARD AND SEAT WERE COMPLETELY SOAKED FROM 8 GALLONS OF WATER WHICH HAD BEEN SUCKED OUT OF THE CAR PRIOR TO DRIVING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. *TR
CPST NOTED DURING CRS INSTALLATION THAT VEHICLE OWNERS MANUAL FOR 2005 PONTIAC G6 GT INDICATED THAT LATCH ANCHORS WERE LOCATED IN OUTBOARD SEATING LOCATIONS. VEHICLE CLEARLY HAD 6 LOWER ANCHORS (3 SETS). LOWER ANCHOR CONFIGURATION APPEARS "ATYPICAL" FOR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE AND CENTER SEATING POSITIONS. THESE 4 ANCHORS ARE UNEVENLY SPACED AND LIKELY REQUIRE THE USE OF "EVERY-OTHER ANCHOR" TO PROPERLY SECURE A CRS. THE VEHICLE MANUAL GUIDANCE DIRECTIONS COULD POSE A SIGNIFICANT RISK AS THE REAR OUTBOARD LOCATION BEHIND THE DRIVER HAS 2 ANCHORS SPACED ABOUT 8-9 INCHES APART. CENTER LATCH INSTALL COULD ALSO BE A PROBLEM AS THE TWO CENTER MOST ANCHORS (OF THE 6 TOTAL ANCHORS) ARE ALSO SPACED ONLY 8-9 INCHES APART. THIS ATYPICAL SPACING IS NOT UNCOMMON IN GM VEHICLES BUT IS DETAILED IN THE VEHICLE MANUALS.....AND USUALLY INCLUDES AN ILLUSTRATION. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE MANUAL GAVE NO CLUE AS TO WHICH OF THESE ATYPICAL ANCHORS SHOULD BE USED TO INSTALL A CRS BEHIND THE DRIVER OR IN THE CENTER WITH LATCH. VEHICLE MANUAL COVER INDICATED IT WAS THE 2005 PONTIAC G-6 MANUAL. THE FIRST PAGE OF THE MANUAL ....INDICATED THE PART # FOR THE MANUAL WAS: 05PON/BUIWARSUPL 2004 GMC THIS COMPLAINT INVOLVES PRIMARILY THE VEHICLE OWNERS MANUAL ...BUT INDIRECTLY INVOLVES ATYPICAL LOWER LATCH ANCHORS THAT ARE SPACED NON-INTUITIVELY AND MAY RESULT IN INSTALLATION ERRORS FOR CHILD SAFETY SEATS. *TR
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 PONTIAC G6. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION EMITTED A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WITH EXTREME HESITATION. THE ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED CONTINUOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 PONTIAC G6. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY SHIFTING IN PARK, DRIVE, AND REVERSE. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT WAS SOMETIMES UNABLE TO START THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT RECOGNIZED AS BEING IN THE PARKED POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000. THE CONSUMER STATED THE SHIFT CABLES WERE LOOSE . UPDATED 05/22/12
