What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Pontiac G6, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The vehicle experienced a complete failure of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) motor, matching the identical failure symptoms of NHTSA Recall 15V064000, but this specific VIN is excluded from the campaign. Operating this vehicle without electronic power assist put extreme torsional stress on the manual steering linkage over time. On August 14, 2025, while executing a low-speed turn in a drive-through, the intermediate steering shaft suffered a catastrophic structural failure and completely snapped in half. This resulted in an immediate, total loss of steering control and required the vehicle to be flatbed towed from the scene. The subsequent free-spinning of the steering wheel also tore and destroyed the internal airbag clockspring, disabling the driver's safety restraint system. Photographic evidence of the failure and the resulting tow has been retained. A safety defect file must be opened as this excluded VIN presents a severe public hazard due to the unaddressed factory EPS defect.
When first started sometimes power steering does not work. Temporary fix is to restart the car. It's gone out while I was driving. This is very scary and hard to turn when it goes out.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Recall I got a electric problem plus air bags problem plus TC problem 🙄
I have the warning power steering on my dash and it’s getting harder to steer and turn then it quits and does it again it’s not safe at all
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have the warning power steering on my dash and it’s getting harder to steer and turn then it quits and does it again it’s not safe at all
The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while attempting to make a right turn, while depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended, and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle stopped independently. Neither a dealer nor an independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to Special Coverage Adjustment: N162075260 (Brake Lamp Malfunction); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the program, and to report the failure to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving the vehicle, the break lights are on, when you stop, or press the break peddle, the break lights go out, therefore giving no warning to the vehicles behind you.
I have had to get 3 new keys made for this car due to the security light coming on, sometimes it will not crank or start, so I have replaced the starter twice, have replaced relays and fuses, and the security light will come on while drive down the road and all gauges drop to zero, even the gas light says empty and every light on the dash comes on. But the car will still drive. But once you turn it off it will not start for a few hours! It’s impossible to find parts for Pontiac anymore so everything has to be ordered! This should’ve been recalled a long time ago!
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Recall I got a electric problem plus air bags problem plus TC problem 🙄
Airbag light staying on dash and the passenger seat does not register a person sitting in it. The passage seat bag alert does not making a sound
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
I had to replace the fuel pump module assembly because it was leaking fuel out from above the fuel tank and dripping down near the exhaust. A strong fuel smell alerted me to the issue and upon inspection we found fuel dripping out. This is a safety issue because leaking fuel near the exhaust is a possible problem for ignighting. There was no indication from the car itself that the leak was occurring. We had to figure it out ourselves and get it inspected at a shop and repaired immediately.
The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked in the garage and when her husband went into the garage the next day, he smelled a strong gasoline odor. The contact stated that the odor was coming from underneath the driver’s seat. There were no warning lights illuminated. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and advised the contact to tow the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the failure as a cracked fuel pump. The contact stated that the fuel pump was replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 127,662
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Recall history for my car says that the recall has been taken care of for the power steering, but the car has power steering issues very badly
On kelly blue book, my 2006 pontiac g6 has a recall for power steering which is the number 1 recall for the exact make and model in other people’s cars, but the recall is not showing on the nhtsa. power steering does not work and the steering wheel shakes a lot. i just bought the car in late december
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle started pulling to the right. The steering wheel was forcefully returned to the center. Additionally, on other occasions while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal clicking sound coming from the vehicle before the vehicle stalled. There were two unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering wheel warning light was illuminated, and that the torque steering sensor and lower control arm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to Midas. The contact notified the manufacturer of the failure and was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was then towed to an undisclosed dealer and the contact was informed that the engine failed due to the timing belt and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Steering and steering wheel shakey and the power steering randomly goes out.
When driving I can’t steer correctly steering wheel goes stiff where I can’t turn the electric powering light comes on
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Recall I got a electric problem plus air bags problem plus TC problem 🙄
The electronic stability control has failed, due to sway bar links are worn out and causing wheels to vigorously wobble causing the Eps input circuit to shut down the system to avoid overloading the circuit and burning up the module , I believe the recall hasn't been fixed , Can you please consider the issue as dangerous and repair my car ... I am not trying to say this but I am homeless and dependent on the car for shelter as well as transportation... Please note don't use last statement to show sympathy on me ... I am doing ok today, Thank you, have a blessed day
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY CAR WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY, I WENT TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR AND THE DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF. THIS PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE IF THE FACT THIS CAR ONLY HAS ONE KEY ENTRY. SO IF YOU LOCK YOUR KEYS IN THE CAR AND YOUR DRIVER'S HANDLE BREAKS OFF OR DOESN'T WORK YOUR NOT GETTING IN YOUR CAR EVEN WITH YOUR KEYS BECUZ THERE IS ONLY ONE KEY HOLE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. 3 MONTHS AFTER THE DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF. I WAS SHOPPING CAME OUT OF STORE WENT TO PUT MY GROCERIES IN FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AND THAT DOOR HANDLE BROKE OFF. SO THAT LEAVES ME NO THERE CHOICE BUT TO LEAVE MY WINDOWS DOWN ENOUGH TO BE ABLE REACH IN AND OPEN THE DOOR FROM INSIDE OR OR LEAVE MY DOORS UNLOCKED BECUZ I CAN NOT UNLOCK MY DOORS WITH THE ONE KEY ENTRY BECUZ OF THE DOOR HANDLE BREAKING OFF. WHAT IF SOME HOW THE DOORS WERE TO ACCIDENTLY LOCK WITH A SMALL CHILD INSIDE ? YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE GET INTO THAT CAR TO GET THAT CHILD!
ELECTRIC HARTOP ROOF WILL NOT LATCH COMPLETLY AND WILL NOT ALLOW ACCESS TO TRUNK EITHER. HAPPEN AFETR HAVING CHEVOLET GARAGE WORK ON VEHICLE HAD OTHER ISSUES AS WELL . APPROX ON DATE HAD MULTIPLE DATES WORKED ON . KEY LOCKED THEY RPLCD KEY LOCK ASSY , THEN A CABLE WHICH WAS PROBLEM DID NOT ALLOW START AND SHIFTING OF VEHICLE. CHARGE MULTIPLE TIMES AND DID NOT FIX BUT CHARGED ALOT FOR PARTS SWAPPING TO TRY AND FIX ISSUE. ALSO CAUSED OIL LEAK AND NEVER REPAIRED STEERING ISSUE/POPPING IN FRONT END DRIVERS SIDE.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
Airbag light staying on dash and the passenger seat does not register a person sitting in it. The passage seat bag alert does not making a sound
POWER STREELING
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
I have had to get 3 new keys made for this car due to the security light coming on, sometimes it will not crank or start, so I have replaced the starter twice, have replaced relays and fuses, and the security light will come on while drive down the road and all gauges drop to zero, even the gas light says empty and every light on the dash comes on. But the car will still drive. But once you turn it off it will not start for a few hours! It’s impossible to find parts for Pontiac anymore so everything has to be ordered! This should’ve been recalled a long time ago!
A FRONT INTERIOR WELD ON THE CROSS MEMBER FAILED, RESULTING IN A SEVERE SLOPE TO THE RIGHT AS WELL AS A NOTICEABLE CLUNK WHEN TURNING.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
Windshield , driver side mirror
WHILE DRIVING I OPENED MY PANORAMIC SUNROOF AND IT PROCEEDED TO COME OFF OF THE TRACKS AND GLASS FELL THROUGH THE SUNROOF ON TO MY HEAD AND INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT. IT IS MADE OF FOUR PANELS NONE OF WHICH ARE ATTACHED IT WILL NO LONGER WORK PROPERLY WITHOUT DOING DAMAGE OR HURTING SOMEONE. *TR
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
I HAVE A 2006 PONTIAC G6 GTP THAT I HAVE OWNED SINCE IT WAS NEW. I HAVE HAD ALL THE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE COMPLETED AT THE RECOMMENDED MILEAGE INTERVALS, INCLUDING THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED AND FILLED AT A GM DEALER. RANDOMLY, WHILE DRIVING WITHOUT ANY NOTICE THE LIGHT TO NOTIFY ME THAT TRACTION CONTROL ISN'T ON COMES ON AND MY TRANSMISSION WILL JERK VIOLENTLY WHEN SHIFTING BETWEEN GEARS. THEN SOMETIMES THE LIGHT WILL RANDOMLY GO OFF AND THE TRANSMISSION WILL CONTINUE TO FUNCTION AS NORMAL. RESTARTING THE VEHICLE DOES NOT CORRECT THE ISSUE, HOWEVER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF THEN UNHOOKING THE BATTERY OR PULLING THE FUSE UNDER THE HOOD FOR THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE THEN REPLACING IT AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE WILL TEMPORARILY FIX THE ISSUE. I HAVE HAD MY TRANSMISSION LOOKED AT BY A GM DEALER AND THEY SAY THAT IT IS A FAULTY TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. GM HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS ISSUE BUT GM WANTS OVER $1000 TO REPLACE FAULTY EQUIPMENT (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) THAT THEY MADE BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED ME TO WRECK SEVERAL TIMES, AND I AM AFRAID THAT EVENTUALLY IT WILL. *TR
ON THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING, KNOWN AS BLACK FRIDAY MY GRANDDAUGHTER AN I GOT INTO MY 2006 PONTIAC G6, AND I WAS UNABLE TO STEER MY VEHICLE. THE POWER STEERING HAD LOCKED UP. I WAS UNABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE. GM SENT ME A NOTICE IN THE MAIL 4 MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING. THE LETTER STATED THAT IF I DID NOT HAVE A PROBLEM DO NOT TAKE MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, FOUR MONTHS LATER I EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO THE GM DEALER AND THEY KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR 5 DAYS AND SAID THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE POWER STEERING AND THEY HAD FIXED THE PROBLEM. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND 10 MINUTES LATER THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. THE CAR WENT BACK TO THE GM DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN. I HAVE FOUND OVER 100 CONSUMERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM THROUGHOUT THE US. GM KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS, BUT TOOK NO ACTION TO RECALL THIS VEHICLE. I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO THIS DEFECT. I FEEL THAT IT IS TIME THAT NHTSA DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHEN MY SEATBELT IS PLUGGED IN WHETHER I'M IN DRIVE OR I'M IN PARK THE LIGHT COMES ON AND KEEPS BEEPING IF I RATTLE THE BUCKLE INSIDE THE SEAT BELT HOUSING AROUND THE LIGHT GOES OFF AT 15 SECONDS MOMENTARILY AND THEN COMES BACK ON IF I GET IN AN ACCIDENT I'M SCARED THAT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY BECAUSE THE SEAT BELT LIGHT IS ON IN THE DASH CONSTANTLY AND KEEPS BEEPING EVERY 45 MINUTES DUE TO THE LIGHT BEING ON
SEAT BELT WOULD NOT UNBUCKLE. WITH A FAIR AMOUNT OF DIFFICULTY AND SOME ASSISTANCE, I WAS ABLE TO SLIP OUT OF SEAT BELT. THE PLASTIC ON THE BUCKLE PORTION OF THE BELT NEAR THE OPENING WHERE THE LATCH SLIDES IN HAD BROKEN INTO SEVERAL PIECES AND LODGED INSIDE THE BUCKLE PREVENTING IT FROM OPENING. AFTER PICKING THE BROKEN PIECES OUT, THE BUCKLE FINALLY RELEASED. A POTENTIALLY SERIOUS PROBLEM. *TR
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 PONTIAC G6 EQUIPPED WITH SUMITOMO TOURING LST TIRES, SIZE P215/60 TR16. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES WERE BULGING AND CUPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. THE TIRES WERE NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000.
AS I WAS PULLING INTO WORK, MY CAR DINGED THREE TIMES, THEN POWER STEERING WAS FLASHED ON MY RADIO AND MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP! UNABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR, I HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC AND THE ESTIMATED REPAIRS WOULD COST $900! THIS IS A HORRIBLE CAR, AS THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE FEW PROBLEMS I AM HAVING WITH THIS VEHICLE. EVERY TIME I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SOMETHING IN THE STEERING SYSTEM IS MAKING IT CLANK, AND WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL BACK IT WILL CLANK AGAIN. IF I AM AT A COMPLETE STOP AND HAVE MY HANDS OFF THE STEERING WHEEL, WHEN I APPLY THE GAS, THE WHEEL WILL PULL ITSELF ABOUT HALF A TURN TO THE LEFT AND AS I PICK UP SPEED IT WILL RECENTER ITSELF. WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL THERE IS ALSO A GRINDING NOISE. THE STRUTS HAVE GONE BAD, WHICH IS $450 MORE, AND THERE IS A LEAK IN THE FRONT LEFT TIRE SOMEWHERE (NOT THE TIRE ITSELF, THE MECHANIC TOLD ME IT WAS LEAKING OIL SOMEWHERE). THIS IS MY FIRST GM CAR, AND IT WILL MOST CERTAINLY BE MY LAST. *JS
Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
BEGAN POPPING WHEN I TURNED ANY DIRECTION, HAD IT CHECKED OUT BY THE PONTIAC DEALER, SAID THE POWER STEERING NEEDED GREASED. 2 WEEKS LATER BEGAN AGAIN, TOOK IT BACK IN, THEY DECIDED THE RACK AND PINION NEEDED REPLACED. HAD THAT REPLACED, 1 MONTH LATER, SAME THING. HAD IT FIXED AGAIN. ABOUT 2 MONTHS IT HAS STARTED IT AGAIN. ALSO THE AIRCONDITIONER HAS QUIT TWICE. TRADING IT OFF TOMORROW! HAVE HAD THE CAR THREE YEARS. WAS BRAND NEW WHEN BOUGHT. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2006 PONTIAC G6 APRIL 21, 2007. AFTERWARDS I STARTED NOTICING A POPPING NOISE WHEN I WOULD TURN, SO I TOOK THE CAR IN TO BE SERVICED 9-2007. THEY REPLACED THE TIE ROD ADJUSTER & RESET TOE-IN, BUT AGAIN I STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. ALSO I'VE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE WINDOW LEAKING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE AC / HEATER BLOWER STAYS ON WHEN CAR IS NOT ON WHICH CAUSED MY BATTERY TO DRAIN SO I TOOK THE CAR IN AGAIN APRIL 11, 2008 AND THEY TOLD ME THEY REPLACED THE DRIVE SHAFT & BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR BUT STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. NOW I AM NOTICING THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG INDICATOR DOESN'T REGISTER WHEN SOMEONE IS IN THE FRONT SEAT W/ SEATBELT ON. SOMETIMES IT COMES ON WHEN THERE IS NO ONE IN THE SEAT. THE STARTER CONTINUES TO CRANK WHILE TRYING TO START CAR AND STICKS WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, AFTER PURCHASING FUEL THE CAR GAS GAUGE DROPS DRASTICALLY ONLY AFTER GOING ABOUT A MILE OR TWO. *TR
Too few reports in this category for a page of its own — they appear in the full complaint list.
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
